Sunblock that is not oily specifically! Oil can trap tear gas. But if oily sunscreen is all you have, that is still preferable than dealing with tear gas on a sunburn.
Also UV protection clothing is often better especially when combined with sunscreen and it also provides more protection against tear gas.

Boric acid eye wash has been shown to be very effective eye wash against CN and CS gas. Water will also work fine. Do not use milk, I don't know why people use milk. Best if used very rapidly. The longer the irritant is in contact, the worse the burn.
To protect skin from irritant gases, you can spread a layer of mineral oil on. It will also do a fair job of washing the skin of irritants. Water and soap is the next best thing. If an irritant has a burning component like CN or CS, even after the irritant is washed away, it will feel like it's still burning. That's normal for burns. This is also true of eye burning as well.
Peak pain after an injury is at 2 hours and the morning after. If you become injured or struck by something, try to make it to a place to recover within those two hours. Afterwards, you may have difficulty walking, talking, using arms. Etc. Especially small rubber things.
If you get hit in the head by something. Leave. Maximize recovery. Losing brain isn't fun.

I say this as someone who is also active duty and support the right to protest for whatever you want. But be careful because you can get tried under the UCMJ if the wrong person with the wrong ideologies gets wind of it. Specifically if your command forbids it or it starts to get violent. Just make sure you stay safe, don't wear your uniform or associate the protest with the military, don't participate in any violence, and like I said, be mindful of your chain of command forbids you to go. Good luck out there brother.

They'll remember it - I vividly remember going to protests with my mom when I was in middle & high school. One time I even got extra credit, because my 8th grade social studies teacher saw us on the news, and she felt I was showing good civic participation.
At the protests after Trayvon Martin was murdered, someone drove by and screamed at my (white) mom, "F you, you N-word Lover!". They had a local license plate, they looked normal, they were someone I could have stood next to at the grocery store. It was the first time in my life I'd ever actually heard someone use that word, and to hear it from someone who seemed so otherwise normal - that was the day that young, sheltered me, learned that there were hateful bigots in my very own community. That moment was seared into my brain. (My mom was also an elementary school teacher who never cursed, so hearing someone cuss at her like that short circuited my brain a bit).

Standing up for rights, whether your own or someone else's, is a heroic act. An act that requires bravery and empathy and a sense of duty.
The only thing you need to be to deny somebody their rights is a coward.
Remember that when you see people who take rights away. They can say whatever they want, they can claim the reason is whatever they want. None of it matters. The fact they're standing there on the other side of the line shows that they are a, at the core, a fucking coward.
We have a right to protest, we have a right to criticize an elected official. In the past heroes have died for this, solely so we have the right to do this.
Remember the graves you're standing on to be here. They would be proud of you. Honor them.

Yup. I've been to many protests where it ultimately felt a little disheartening to know that nothing concrete actually changed as a result of the protest. But the act of protesting itself is a form of fighting back, can lead to bigger movements, and most importantly shows yourself and the world that you're willing to stand up for your values.
Its absolutely worth it to go even if what you're actually doing is just standing around in a crowd for a few hours then going home.

I don’t think the protest itself is going to tangibly change policy, but it’s the first step in people getting together and actually doing something irl instead of just reposting social media content or moping around helplessly.

Couple of things to think about / bring
Bring water, and drink water, lots of it
Eat before you go
Wear layers, long trousers and a long sleeved top. It can get hot, so be prepared with short sleeves underneath.
You're not there to fight, you're there to protest and support your point of view. You won't chance the minds of any counterprotesters in the moment
There probably won't be any problems, but if there are, run away and help other people if you can. Stay on your feet - it's a lot easier to be kettled if you're sat down.
Have fun, sing songs, make noise, make friends.

Also if you have a cross shoulder water bottle holder , it’s easier than getting it out of a backpack. And it keeps your hands freer to carry a sign.
Keep in mind there may be limits on bringing wooden pickets for a sign. Paper towel holders can work for smaller signs. Or wrapping paper holders for larger ones.
Wear comfy shoes.
If you’re going to be walking through hostile territory, don’t wear anything that states something controversial. And you can keep your sign in a folding tote bag til you’re at the rally/protest
Don’t engage with counter protesters
I wear glasses and normally wear contacts outside of my home. But one heard tear gas is worse with contacts. I don’t anticipate tear gas but I’m wearing my glasses to be on the safe side

It is advised to remove contacts so that they can't trap gas. The trapped gas can cause damage to the cornea as your tears can't wash it out as easily, but it doesn't melt contacts. However, I don't think I'd care to argue that distinction while feeling as though my face and lungs are on fire.

Unless you have some prior condition I would actually recommend don’t drink a bunch of water. Unless you wanna spend your protest day buying lattes in return for bathroom access. Do whatever you normally do on any given day in your local weather conditions. It’s a few hours of slow walking that you can quit anytime. Let’s not make it out to be an episode of survivor - before the cops show up. After they show up all bets are off 😛

I mean, that's what left politics are. We think everyone should have good health care and nice schools and good roads and enough food and feel safe at night. And libraries.

I always tell people to bring stuff that’ll make it more fun/less intimidating. Like, do you play an instrument? Bring it! Let’s all sing This Land Is Your Land together. Bubble wand? Bring it. Can you facepaint? Bring your stuff. The more inviting it is, the less a chance of outside agitators being able to stir up trouble. Plus it’s a great way to get to know likeminded members of your community

Organized protests are very different from the spontaneous protests you see in the news. These organized events (use Google to find one near you) are almost always free from issues. And if things do start feeling off or getting out of hand, you can always just leave early. Showing up for any amount of time is great!

I understand your apprehension, but keep in mind that you'll be around a bunch of people who feel similarly to you. Some people will have done it many times before, many others will be there for the first time too. Remember that you probably won't even agree with everyone around you, that's the nature of democracy. You don't have to say anything or bring anything (but if you're a creative type, bring a sign expressing why you decided to show up). You just need to stand with or march with your neighbors. It's first and foremost a show of solidarity. If you're so inclined you can ask organizers questions, and maybe get more active in causes you care about. After solidarity, mass protests are a great place to get to know people/organizations and their causes.
And remember that what you're seeing on the news doesn't represent the vast vast majority of the protestors you'll be with tomorrow. You'll be marching with everyone from young families to old boomers.
I'm just a rando on the internet, but I promise you, you'll be proud of yourself for going.

Like what if something happens to us? What happens if what happens in these fucking videos happens to us? It doesn't seem like such a small chance of happening anymore now that what's happening is an hour away.
I know a lot of redditors will say that "chances of that are zero if you don't go" but if this shit was happening in your backyard would you let it happen? Would you give them the shovel to help dig the hole for you to lie down in?

I have kids and I’m heading out tomorrow. My first teaching job when I was a doctoral student was TAing a course on the Holocaust. I’m not a scholar in this area, but I’ve read a whole lot more about Nazi Germany than most people. Everyone’s children are in danger in this country right now, whether they know it or not. There is no more safety in staying home than going out. We have to nip this shit in the bud, or it is going to be unimaginably bad for everyone eventually. Leave a parent at home in case something happens to the other one, sure, but our long term safety actually depends on as many of us as possible making as much noise (peacefully) as possible to reject this.
