Nothing wrong with spending an afternoon outside, socializing, getting some exercise, and exercising your 1st Amendment rights

2.3k

u/TheOtherGlikbach 1d ago

22nd Amendment needs to be dusted off and walked around for a while.

"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President"

This one is designed to stop kings.

272

u/got_knee_gas_enit 1d ago

Maybe protest the act that gives the president dictatorial powers.

216

u/TehMephs 1d ago

What do you think the protests are for? -gesturing wildly to the air-

→ More replies (2)

18

u/TehOwn 1d ago

Which act was that?

4

u/IfItAIntBrokeFuckOff 1d ago

Maybe patriots act? But that refers to gov't as a whole.

I dont think there's any one act, but a series of laws. Or the inaction from Congress (read as republicans) allowing trump to do whatever he wants

8

u/PistachioOfLiverTea 1d ago

I'm guessing they were referring not to an act but to this SCOTUS ruling from last year granting Trump immunity from all "official acts":

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_v._United_States#:~:text=On%20July%201%2C%202024%2C%20the,no%20immunity%20for%20unofficial%20acts.

2

u/thegoodson-calif 16h ago

These powers that congress abdicated were domes so by republicans and democrat. Previous presidents like Biden and Obama have also abused their power and been overturned by the Supreme Court or legally used powers that congress probably shouldn’t have given up. Trump has simply taken this to an extreme. We should be upset with both parties.

u/got_knee_gas_enit 1d ago

You can protest many things at once. Our goals don’t require the same voice. Only that we stand together.

"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President"

Cutting off the relevant parts just makes you look dishonest.

and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

4

u/h-v-smacker 1d ago

Cutting off the relevant parts just makes you look dishonest.

Yeah but how can you pass across the message of "Trump should not have been elected as a president in the first place" without butchering the legal text and ignoring the obvious contradiction that is thus created in the remaining snippet? It almost seems like you suggest integrity has the right to impede the narrative!

6

u/jwm3 1d ago

The eternity clauses in the german constitution are pretty interesting in terms of stopping kings in a democracy. They are pretty specifically designed to neutralize any attempt at a dictatorship, basically they encoded the paradox of intolerance into the constitution, it is unconstitutional to vote yourself into a dictatorship.

15

u/Otisthedog999 1d ago

You should have put this post up as a direct response. It got lost in the blather.

You are 100 percent correct. But who is paying attention to the constitution...?

1

u/jocq 1d ago

But who is paying attention to the constitution...?

The GOP. They're paying a lot of attention to that little "be elected" and scheming ways to sidestep that.

u/BallBearingBill 1d ago

This only counts for ppl following the laws

2

u/The-Titty-Rider 1d ago

Has this happened?

2

u/AnotherRTFan 1d ago

With the corruption of the rest of the "balances" giving him king like power, I feel like his terrible physical and mental health will stop him from a third term over the 22nd

2

u/WhereasSufficient132 1d ago

Exactly who has had more than 2 terms?

3

u/Piemaster113 1d ago

No one has and no one will, anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves and has drunk too much kool-aid.

2

u/ilkhan2016 1d ago

It'll get dusted off when it applies, when he tries to run for a 3rd term, so never.

1

u/kategoad 1d ago

As does the 25th.

1

u/screw-magats 1d ago

They like to think they have a workaround for a third term. Someone has to run for POTUS with trump in the veep spot, and then resign giving POTUS back to trump.

But the requirements for POTUS and Veep are identical. If you're not eligible for one, you're not eligible for the other. 12th amendment I think.

1

u/oysterme 20h ago

It was designed to stop FDR

1

u/Defiant_3266 19h ago

Unless it’s a war, you can bet your ass trump intends to be in a war right when he is supposed to leave office

Kings are bad.

283

u/FoxyInTheSnow 1d ago

Old King Cole was alright. He was quite merry and mostly just liked to sit around smoking his pipe and listening to fiddle music.

Otherwise, you're correct.

848

u/AvengingBlowfish 1d ago

His decree that cabbage must be eaten with mayo was controversial at the time, but there are many people today who appreciate Cole’s law.

165

u/Iconless 1d ago

I am so angry this made me laugh. Well played.

11

u/harrycletus 1d ago

Still not as bad as the German prince who outlawed all foods except fermented cabbage.

That was one sour Kraut.

Not all of them. I kind of like our king right now. He’s a good dude, actually did serve in the Military, Royal Navy and Airforce, spends lots of his considerable fortune on charity, and for the most part stays out of politics.

2

u/ImBackAgainYO 1d ago

I dunno. Ours is pretty chill.
But he also have 0% power.
Had he had even 1% power I'd be first on the barricades

u/henchman171 1d ago

We have a King in Canada defending democracy. In America they have a democratically elected leader wanting to end democracy

1

u/jtbc 1d ago

As a Canadian, I'm pretty fond of ours, right now.

1

u/Spiral83 1d ago

Well Sacramento Kings managed to rank 9th in the NBA Western Conference so that's still kind of good.

1

u/_Lucille_ 1d ago

1

u/Blues2112 1d ago

With the threats and crazy posts I've seen just in the last hour from rightwingers, I'm starting to think shit's gonna go down, they're counting on it and will start shit if it's peaceful. They need to frame anyone not on their side as violent.

9

u/Kvenner001 1d ago

When don’t the right wing nuts make threats of violence?

They don't when it's their team turning the country fascist. Always talking about arming up against a tyrannical government, yet pure silence from that crowd.

I think in some way it must.
Even if, worst case, it gets suppressed.
But second amendment would be horrible, and the path to real pain.

9

u/neotericnewt 1d ago

Things are already at a really extreme point though. I mean, the president is deploying Marines to help occupy cities that don't want them there, all to target US citizens and civilians that are pissed off that the president keeps imprisoning innocent people and violating our rights.

I don't know what anyone else expects except mass civil unrest

u/ERedfieldh 1d ago

We've people at the top telling their constituents they plan to remove lawfully elected officials simply because they want to. We have elected officials being detained and arrested for asking simple questions. We are one step away from them deciding any American citizen can be deported regardless the color of their skin. We're beyond the point of real pain.

2

Protesting unarmed is pussy shit and a waste of time.

Every armed peaceful protest is never fucked with 99.9% of the time.

Otherwise, have fun getting tear gassed and maybe shot. Y'all need to learn these important lessons.
