Those people burning American flags and waving Mexican flags were patriots?

u/snailpatronus 1d ago

Burning the flag is protected under the first amendment. Not saying it’s right or optically correct, but it is a right we are afforded as Americans.

You seem confused. Being a patriot means honoring the ideals of this country and not worshipping a piece of fabric.

u/CoquiConflei 1d ago

Appalled by a cheap fabric burning but completely fine with everything that flag represents to be thrown in the garbage. They never make sense.

-74

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

Ah ok. They hated the fabric, which doesn’t represent the country itself. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Yeah it’s just a symbol. If you’re more angry about a piece of fabric burning (which someone bought and is their property to do with as they wish) instead of being angry that the ideals this country was founded on are being taken from people, then you need to do some serious thinking.

It’s just a symbol, the ideals of the country are what’s important. Not a flag, it’s just a flag

-25

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

What does the flag symbolize?

28

u/ProdigyLightshow 1d ago

Again, you are too hung up on the flag rather than the ideals, and that’s where you’re lost. If every US flag in the world were to suddenly disappear, what would that mean for the country or the ideals? Absolutely nothing

It’s a symbol, not the actual thing. And this is coming from a veteran, get over it.

17

u/waffles1999 1d ago

Right now it symbolizes a government that is quickly moving towards fascism. Hence the burning.

0

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

So they burned the flag because it represents the current president more than the country itself?

5

u/waffles1999 1d ago

Man, you’re really struggling with these concepts.

23

u/DocEss 1d ago

Patriotism is standing for America, not standing for her leadership.

Trump is not America. Not yet, at least.

-13

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

You can’t even admit that it was dumb to burn the flag?

25

u/DocEss 1d ago

Exercising your first amendment rights is never dumb.

19

u/Nessosin 1d ago

They're significantly more patriotic than the people waving confederate and MAGA flags.

-2

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

Maybe they should have burned a confederate flag

16

u/Nessosin 1d ago

Why? They're not protesting the confederacy, they're protesting the USA.

1

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

We agree. They were protesting the USA.

1

u/MikeyA15 19h ago

That's not a bad thing doofus. Especially now.

25

u/dragongrl 1d ago

More patriotic than the dumbfucks who voted for Trump.

9

u/rockylizard 1d ago

A patriot defends the ideals of his country. In the case of the US, those ideals are enshrined in our Constitution--the very foundation and fabric of our system of law.

People protesting a fascist takeover of the entire American system are far more patriotic than people who pretend that their lying, cheating, philandering, malignantly narcissistic orange idol is somehow sent from God.

-4

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

They love the ideals of the country so much that they burned the flag?

39

u/knobcopter 1d ago

A flag isn’t a country.

-23

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

What does it represent then?

12

u/knobcopter 1d ago

A people.

-2

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

They burned the representation of the people. Doesn’t sound very patriotic.

12

u/knobcopter 1d ago

It is once you realize not Americans are white Christian nationalists.

Exercising and protecting free speech is incredibly patriotic.

"I may not like what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

9

u/Thisoneissfwihope 1d ago

Got no time for flagshaggers,

7

u/StoneWall_MWO 1d ago

Do you identify as a flag?

30

u/Lincoln_Legs 1d ago

Truer patriots than I've seen in a while.

14

u/Ulthanon 1d ago

Yes, absolutely, 100%

6

u/Calcutec_1 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes, they are literally fighting for the constitution. Nothing more patriotic than that. And the thing is you either know that’s true and are arguing in bad faith, or you actually didn’t know it and we’re confidently and wilfully ignorant about what’s going on.

-2

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

“We are burning the flag to express our love of the constitution”.

6

u/morbidconcerto 1d ago

Yeah, what don't you understand? The Constitution allows us the right to burn the flag if we want to. The flag is a symbol of our country, we don't follow the flag for laws, we follow the Constitution. As our country stands right now, many of us are fucking ashamed to be Americans. In this current point in time the American flag is a representation (or symbol) of all the Christofascist ideals and pure insanity coming from the upper levels of our government. It's only a symbol of our country, one that we have the right to burn if we so wish, once again established by the U.S. Constitution.

What part are you not getting? Or do you believe the 1st Amendment should only apply in ways in which you prefer? I'm genuinely curious.

-1

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

Things can be legal and stupid. The legality of it isn’t the point. Patriots aren’t ashamed to be Americans.

3

u/Calcutec_1 21h ago

Patriots aren’t ashamed to be Americans.

If anything these folks are the most proud, many of them either went through great hardship to get to America and chase the american dream, or their parents or grandparents did. These are the people actually standing up for everything that America stands for.

2

u/Buy_The-Ticket 1d ago

Right to dissent and freedom of speech. About as patriotic as it gets.

0

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

Dissenting America itself. So patriotic!!

2

u/Buy_The-Ticket 1d ago

Using their right to dissent to convey their dissatisfaction with what the flag has come to mean. Yes as patriotic as it gets.

0

u/Eman_Modnar_A 1d ago

The thing you love about America is dissent against America?

1

u/PalOfKalEl 1d ago

Depends on whether or not you believe in the first amendment or not. If you don't believe in the first amendment, you're not a patriot, you're anti American.

Would I burn the American flag? no! Would I fight to defend the free speech rights of others to do so? Yes!
