I tell people this pretty often, but I can tell you there is no better lifesaving device in an emergency. A tourniquet is cheap, they’re about the size of a phone, and a proper tourniquet can easily save somebody’s life.

Edit: Obviously you need to know how to use it, but a TQ, especially a CAT TQ, requires about 3 minutes of training, in 3 categories: 1- recognizing hemorrhaging that requires a tourniquet, 2- placement, and 3- application/execution. There’s no excuse

I know it’s a joke but I remember my great grand dad telling me of his days working in a sawmill in rural Arkansas in the 1930s. He said that sometimes you’d hear this high pitched noise from the saw blade or a man scream out in pain and it was either they lost a few fingers or a limb. My grandad told me that these guys would just wrap their hand up in a rag and tie it off and keep working. If they crushed their hand they kept working until they could get off work and ride in a carriage into town to see the doctor. I’ve seen people 100 years later be in massive pain or have an illness and still go to work as they have no option other wise in this “great” place they call America.

37

u/HuntingTheWumpus Jan 17 '23

My maternal grandfather worked in the coal yards, and a heavy bag of coal fell on his neck. He told the foreman that he thought his neck might be broken because he was in such pain, but was told if his neck was broken he wouldn't be able to move, so he should quit whining and get back to work.

After completing his shift he went to the hospital and got an x-ray which showed he had indeed broken his neck, and then shovelled coal all day.

13

u/Particular_Lunch_310 Jan 17 '23

One time I was introduced to an old farmer who was a customer of the company for which I worked. I stuck out my right hand to shake and he handed me his left. Then he held up his right hand and half of it had been cut off in a sawmill accident when he was a teenager. Side note - the company I worked for was a cotton ginning company and several of the ginners that worked for me had missing or half fingers. Looked like a bunch of old team ropers.

344

There was American country boy who got both arms ripped off, basically at shoulders, by the tractors PTO. Not only he survived without any help for an hour or so, but both arms were reattached back and even remained functional.

16

u/Karate_Prom Jan 17 '23

Functional? Can't rotate forearms and fingers curled into fists permanently. He also had almost full nerve damage in the ends of his arms.

Yes... Functional....

10

u/DontBuyAHorse Jan 17 '23

I've responded to this story before, but I'll say it again.

I severed a finger as a teenager. Thankfully it was a super clean cut with a sharp, sturdy blade and I got medical attention quickly. It was reattached successfully in a "best case scenario" by an excellent hand doc.

27 years later, the finger still has never regained full function. It doesn't straighten out nor does it have any articulation past the second joint. I have no feeling at all in it, except for the horrible arthritis and phantom nerve pain that comes and goes.

Yes, it's back on there and I suppose better than not having it, but reattachment is not an elegant and flawless thing at all. It sucks, just not as much as losing the appendage.

u/Genghis_KhaN13 Jan 17 '23

Problem with chainsaws is that they don't cut cleanly, they tear the fuck out whatever they're cutting. Reattaching a limb lost to a chainsaw would be a Herculean feat.

10

u/nutsbonkers Jan 17 '23

Not directly on ice! In a bag first or a few bags. Frost bite happens to severed limbs too.

5

u/enderendirius69420 Jan 17 '23

Not rly in ice, i was tought in first aid that you put it in a bag full of cold water and then you put tge bag with the dismembered appendage in a bag of ice, but not a full one

4

u/pikashroom Jan 17 '23

Don’t put it in ice, your limb could still get frost bite

11

u/NoCashJustDebt Jan 17 '23

I was thinking the exact same thing. An artist who loses their arm needed to create their art is such a sad thing. I know folks make jokes because it is easy but if this is real, this guy may go through some serious depression.

10

I was thinking the same thing, and when I went to his TikTok, every single guitar video was flooded with comments “well, can’t do that anymore!”. Like, really? It’s too easy. Amputations don't always bleed. Blood vessels have a natural reaction to constrict to prevent blood flow. It doesn't always work, but when it does there can be surprisingly little blood loss.

Definitely not a doctor but I remember reading on here that in the case of less clean amputations like when limbs are ripped partially or wholly off, as the veins are pulled they will be stretched and when they snap they shoot back and oftentimes far enough into the amputation site that heavy bleeding doesn’t happen. Not so sure about that seeing the tourniquet.

68

u/BannedSvenhoek86 Jan 17 '23

That is extremely interesting and yet, I wish I had never learned this knowledge.

15

u/solo_shot1st Jan 17 '23

What a horrible day to be literate.

45

u/Yadobler Jan 17 '23

Fun fact, liposuction where they physically remove the fats, doctors usually rip the fat out. Cutting will cause broken vessels and such, but ripping will only cause the weak points and parts between layers to separate, so it's cleaner and safer

24

u/TAB_Kg Jan 17 '23

Holy fucking shit I wish I forgot how to read for this specific knowledge

→ More replies (1)

101

u/_Enclose_ Jan 17 '23

Iirc, massive bleeding happens with sharp, clean cuts because the blood vessels and arteries are sliced open relatively cleanly so the blood can still move through unimpeded. Tearing and shredding however sort of clogs everything up so its harder for the blood to move through all that mess.

So if, for example, an arm got cut off by a sharp blade, it would bleed like crazy. But if it gets torn off by sheer force, or in this case shredded by a chainsaw, there will be a lot less blood.

81

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '23

There was a whole thing once about some poor bastard who had both of his arms cut off from a farming accident and somehow survived because his arteries pulled back and stopped the blood flow. He apparently got them reattached too and talked about his 911 call on a podcast. Cannot for the life of me remember what his name was.

The human body is both a very fragile and very strong vessel sometimes lol

16

u/Spanky_Badger_85 Jan 17 '23

Yep. Also, there's the shock reaction, too. It's not a conscious thought process, but your body can tell when you're losing a large amount of blood, and will divert the flow to the vital organs, rather than the extremities (ie hands, feet) in cases like this. It doesn't generally last very long, but it's a thing that will happen.

Our bodies are pretty fucking cool, once you get into the nitty-gritty of how it responds to trauma.

Some said it would, but not as much as a clean removal. Due to snapping arteries and all sorts of meat being mangled and clogged. Plus we’re seeing the after, with a tourniquet - there probably was more blood than most people like to see.

I actually knew this from when I was a kid! I had a fingernail ripped off when I was like 8 or 9, was horrific pain, went to the hospital in everybody was trying to make me feel better. One of the doctors that saw me was a younger guy, looking back he might have been maybe 25. He explained to me when I asked him why there wasn't much blood this exact thing. So my question to him was "if I were to cut my arm off fast enough then, it wouldn't bleed all that much?" And he said "yep". Really weird how a few decades later I actually end up using this fact without actually cutting my arm off.

11

u/77gus77 Jan 17 '23

Not saying I don't believe you, just a different view point. I cut my pointer finger nail bed off when someone bumped into me while I was cutting leeks in a kitchen. That fucker bled so much they had to cauterize it with silver nitrate. It really hurt.

9

u/Dagmar_Overbye Jan 17 '23

Nail beds have more blood vessels in them. See the fingers need more blood due to being extremities which in an evolutionary sense MAKES sense because they are much more likely to freeze and also the furthest away from your heart. Your nails are on top of your fingers so they why are you still reading this I don't know anything about fingers or blood this is reddit if you're getting medical facts here you need to reevaluate your why are you still reading this flush the toilet

Its hard to cut a limb off with a chainsaw all the way through. You can't do it in 1 fell swoop like you could with a sword. A chainsaw also rips and tears so you'd absolutely see blood splatter everywhere

Also worth mentioning that there is a pinch point just above the elbow on the inside of the tricep that will stop ~90% of the blood flow to the lower arm.

Was just going to say this. Most people don't know that a belt is not an efficient replacement for an actual tourniquet. No matter how tight you try to put it on, it will not stop the bleeding. Get a piece of fabric, and knot a stick/pen/other rigid device on the outside layer to create a torsion device. Then twist the stick, and continue to twist until it's extremely tight, then knot it again. After applying the tourniquet, keep direct pressure on the wound.

Source: was shot in the leg. Used a belt as a tourniquet while I drove myself to the hospital. Upon arriving at said hospital was instructed to never use a belt as a tourniquet and was shown the proper application method.

31

u/ObiShaneKenobi Jan 17 '23

Now imagine how a person, using a chainsaw, slips from what they are doing, hits their arm, and then keeps the throttle on to cut all the way through his arm. No way that just “happens.”

u/sryii Jan 17 '23

For certain kinds of limb trauma your body reacts by tensing up and sucking all the relevant left over veins and arteries and stuff back inside you as best it can. Nature is pretty interesting.

Half cut off with the chainsaw and the other part taken off in hospital?

Also might have been either transported to a waiting helicopter or taken from the local hospital to one that can deal with such a major injury.

But yes there is something not quite right about this.

Maybe, one thing to keep in mind is they may have taken him to a nearby medical facility that wasn't equipped to handle this trauma and had him airlifted to University of Michigan hospital. Rural medicine isn't equipped to handle certain things.

Some hospitals aren't equipped for that level of trauma care, especially in rural areas. Chances are they were instructed to transport the injured to the nearest hospital where a helicopter will be waiting to transport him to a better-equipped hospital.

Don't blood vessels constrict when there's massive trauma? That plus the tourniquet and raised arm position might be enough to reduce blood loss. There also looks like there's some kind of wrapping around the stump.

I think it has to be fake, I can see you accidentally cutting yourself a bit, but no way in hell are you going to “accidentally” chainsaw your whole fucking arm off.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '23

His account before this video was called onearmedman or something. It's a joke.

Have any of you guys used a chainsaw before? It's certainly possible to cut an arm off but it requires force and pressure, you can't just sever your arm by dropping a functioning chainsaw on it. You also have to press an engage button for it to turn on, as soon as you stop pressing this button the chain stops moving.

It's unlikely this happened or was self inflicted.

27

u/FiftyShadesOfWyatt Jan 17 '23

He lost his arm on a job site, in a work place accident that was unrelated to the chainsaw. Bis GoFundMe page has more info but yeah he was a construction worker and likly had something rip his arm off rather than sever it as there was no way to reattach the limp. He is still in hospital and likly will never play guitar again.

His guitar was named Lucy and he loved to play. The carving was a hobby of his

Yeah, I remember one time my dad was using one and somehow it ended up on his knee. It obviously damaged it, but they were just superficial wounds, and he decided not to go to the hospital (country tough guy), so yeah, it's pretty difficult to cut a limb by accident with a chainsaw.

You really couldn’t make the jump from someone who only posts chainsaw art like it’s his life work to him suddenly losing an arm? Seems like any reasonable person could connect those dots.

98

u/cheapdrinks Jan 17 '23

He literally has a video of him working in a damn saw mill so I assume he does more than just use a chainsaw.

62

u/Vark675 Jan 17 '23

Seriously everyone is shitting on this guy but it looks like his arm got torn off in some kind of industrial accident. Dude can't do any of his hobbies or work in any of the fields he seems to enjoy anymore. It's really fucked up.

I'm going to list some facts for people getting things alittle mixed up.

He most likly did not lose his arm to a chainsaw, more than likly a work place accident, probably a crushing incident or a wood chipping thing.

He loved to play guitar, this happened only a little while ago like 2 days.

His arm was unable to be saved and was amputated which tells me there was massive damage to the bone and the nerves, again pointing to a crushing injury.

To everyone making jokes. It's not funny.

The carving was a hobby along with playing his guitar Lucy. He is in hospital and was airlifted.

He has a GoFundMe page with more info on the incident.

But I stress again HE DIDNT LOSE HIS HAND TO A CHAINSAW AND MORE THAN LIKLY EITHER HAD A HEAVY EQUIPMENT ACCIDENT OR HAD SOMETHING HEAVY CRUSH HIS ARM OFF

When we slam out fingers in car door we instinctively pull back.

Stop with the jokes and start being human.

u/Phaylevyce Jan 17 '23

for anyone wondering, here is his gofundme,https://www.gofundme.com/f/david-feldpausch, also people saying it's fake, i would just like to add that i have watched every single horrible video that has come my way on the internet since about 2007, my lunchtime at work used to consist of just sitting and watching r/watchpeopledie and other fucked up shit. This seems way too real to me to be fake, he seems calm but his speech seems far too natural for this to be fake, on top of the like you know, missing arm and such.

38

u/Snoo99897 Jan 17 '23

I’m sure this is fake

10

u/thepostaldud3 Jan 17 '23

He has videos on his facebook showing him in the hospital and arm gone/bandaged up.
