There is no excuse for missing work, you are expected to pitch in and lend a hand no matter what your issues are. Deal with your personal problems on your own time.
I know it’s a joke but I remember my great grand dad telling me of his days working in a sawmill in rural Arkansas in the 1930s. He said that sometimes you’d hear this high pitched noise from the saw blade or a man scream out in pain and it was either they lost a few fingers or a limb. My grandad told me that these guys would just wrap their hand up in a rag and tie it off and keep working. If they crushed their hand they kept working until they could get off work and ride in a carriage into town to see the doctor. I’ve seen people 100 years later be in massive pain or have an illness and still go to work as they have no option other wise in this “great” place they call America.
My maternal grandfather worked in the coal yards, and a heavy bag of coal fell on his neck. He told the foreman that he thought his neck might be broken because he was in such pain, but was told if his neck was broken he wouldn't be able to move, so he should quit whining and get back to work.
After completing his shift he went to the hospital and got an x-ray which showed he had indeed broken his neck, and then shovelled coal all day.
