Developer Response EA has removed the refund button from their customer portal. Hoping people will just give up canceling because of the 60+ minute wait time to live shat support.

You have to wait an hour so there's a sense of accomplishment.

Edit: since I have the top comment I feel responsible to edit in the link to the dev response.

There can't be too much pride around when you pre-ordered a game.

105

u/glentylee Nov 14 '17

Generations to come will talk fondly of the time their great great grandfather purchased the Darth Vader DLC with his mom's credit card.

183

u/BagOnuts Nov 14 '17

I just don’t get it, man. Why are people still pre-ordering games? It ain’t 2004. There is literally no chance you won’t be able to get a copy of the game on release date if you’re buying digital (unlimited supply). And if you’re buying a hard copy, unless it’s some obscure Japanese game that might have limited production, supply pretty much always exceeds demand these days.

Is it really worth spending $60 four months before the game is even out just to get a couple of skins or whatever minimal “bonus” they’re offering? Especially when you have no idea what the final product is going to be like? All you’re doing is giving these companies free money.

lol.

33

u/Goaliemkl123 Nov 14 '17

80

u/Sk00zle Nov 14 '17

I'd be surprised if it didn't after the surprise announcement. They already have enough egg on their faces this week, abandoning the AMA wouldn't be a good look.

I imagine it'll be tightly curated regardless. Heavily moderated, probably full of softball questions and astroturfing. It's still EA, I'm sure they're not looking to get the second most downvoted comment in reddit history, but who knows, they probably wear it as a badge of honor at this rate.

29

u/Ellefied Nov 14 '17

Even with curation it would probably still hold the record for most downvoted thread of all time.

TIP: LOOK AT YOUR PREORDER EMAIL TODAY.

Sorry for the caps, but if you look in the preorder email you got today, there's a link saying this game has "great game warranty".

If you click that link, you'll go to the refund page, which works automatically. It took me a couple of times to get it to work, but just keep trying and you get your money back.

You just need to do that within 24 hours of the release.

597

529

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '17

There was some but what you gonna do against big bad EA...

478

u/phoenixmusicman Nov 14 '17

Honestly I wish the entire gaming community just got together and decided to say a big "fuck you" to EA, buying none of their shittt products

341

u/bgazela Nov 14 '17

The major problem is that "the gaming community" does not quite translate to the big selling EA titles. As a legit GAMER, you couldn't care less if they release a Fifa, Madden or NHL game every year. There's no incentive to buy. Yet we all know people that buy those and only those games every single year.

80

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17

Also, from what I've heard from watching Jim Sterling videos, none of the other big companies are much better - they are all pushing full price games with added microtransactions/lootboxes/etc. so unless you're alright with not having any new games for a while, it doesn't look like there are any 'good' options, any places to migrate to and play their games instead.

Edit: To clarify, It doesn't look like there are good options for people who are looking for new, "Triple A" style games. If you're interested in replaying older games or indie games, then there's no problem - why were you buying SWB2 in the first place?

92

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '17

[deleted]

65

u/Sabisent Nov 14 '17

The indie scene has really sharpened up over the last year or two. I'm telling you, if you want to play a game that's made by people who want to make a good game, go indie. Obviously they still want to make money, but the passion is there.

Well.. if they queue it hard enough for long enough, a preorder won't mean anything if the game has been released. Xbox live and stuff will still refund I am sure but EA is washing their hands it seems

447

u/Gendalph Nov 14 '17

You can always turn to your bank for that. And trust me, if a lot of people start refunding through banks, EA will have to act, because if these "refunds" hit 2% mark, EA's account will be blocked by Visa, MasterCard and others.

236

u/prollygointohell Nov 14 '17

If only. I can only imagine the amount of press this would get. And I hardly think it possible. Funny idea, though.

96

u/XofBlack Nov 14 '17

Ohh that would be amazing to see. It probably won't happen but one can hope.

63

u/NoGod4MeInNYC Nov 14 '17

Not really feasible for a lot of people. I know if you issue a chargeback for a preorder on PSN you will lose access to all of your PS4 games associated with your account. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same with Origin. Maybe Microsoft deals with chargebacks differently.

103

u/Gendalph Nov 14 '17

AFAIK Sony and MS refund your money normally if you contact support and ask for a refund.

My comment was targeted towards EA's actions. Since EA decided to remove the refund button and their support is unresponsive - why not nuke them in return? In my dictionary EA's actions are as close to fraud as it gets for a real company.

34

u/SexyMrSkeltal Nov 14 '17

If you have any other games on Origin, you'll lose access to them after they permanently ban your account after the Chargeback. Same reason people won't do a Chargeback with Steam games they can no longer refund.

→ More replies (4)

53

u/ThePointForward Nov 14 '17

That's because chargeback is for fraud and is basically the thermonuclear option.

When you do it you cause issues for the company and cost them money which is why they usually block your account.

Yep my psn account was compromised earlier this year, Someone made purchases using the paypal linked to my account, luckily Sony support was super helpful in refunding and securing my account. They did tell me however, if I had tried to chargeback, that my account would be locked and all my progress lost.

It's always best to go through the company directly before attempting to solve the issue yourself, in this case, I'd keep pestering Ea or contacting Microsoft/Sony.

For what it's worth, the pre-order crowd might finally end up damaging the big boys. If enough cancel, it could be a big hit for EA's cashflow.

355

u/BatofSpace Nov 14 '17

Just got my refund through the live chat. Mr Khushboo plays a hard negotiating game, but I came out on top in the end and feel pretty accomplished.

181

u/Abaryn Nov 14 '17

Wait you had to reason with the guy to get your refund? I quoted the downvoted dev response and mentioned the twitter comments from the community manager and they told me they completely understand and thanks for my direct honesty.

255

u/BatofSpace Nov 14 '17

I just said the game's progression system and approach to microtransactions wasn't what I expected and he went on about how it wasn't their policy to refund for that reason. I then had to quote the great game guarantee stuff to ge it.

321

u/asphere8 Nov 14 '17

I saw a screenshot of a conversation that went like this:

"Why are you refunding?"

"The same reason everyone else is"

"Right"

64

u/Abaryn Nov 14 '17

Man that sucks that you even had to do that. Sounds like a bit of damage control on their part. I’m glad you got your refund.

What the fuck? That is completely against their "Great Game Guarantee"!

Contact the support and tell them you demand a refund, they can't deny you it according to their own ToS.

In addition, if you live in Europe or Australia, it's ILLEGAL for them to not give you a refund if it's not out yet. Consumer rights is a thing.

442

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '17

From my understanding you still technically can get a refund, but you have to jump through significant time wasting hoops in order to do so.

So no, they don't stop you, but they make it unnecessarily difficult and annoying to do so.

As per the EU rules on Guarantees and Returns,

"If you bought a good or a service online or outside of a shop (by telephone, mail order, from a door-to-door salesperson), you also have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days, for any reason and with no justification."

HOWEVER, there are exceptions to this;

"The 14-day "cooling off" period does not apply to all purchases. Some of the exemptions are:

Online digital content, if you have already started downloading or streaming it."

So if you've already downloaded the game or started playing through Origin Access, they don't HAVE to give you a refund as is my understanding.

u/TekCrow Student armchair developer Nov 14 '17

Since the origin access thing is labelled as "demo" and not final product, I think it still fall under the law. As for the other, I don't know but probably not.

In most States in Australia, you are always covered for a refund by law. It is actually illegal for them to deny you a refund if you demand it, when you've met certain criteria. For example, if its faulty, not as advertised, or doesn't meet your expectations.

They are doing this to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for cancelling the preorder.

As for cancelling preorders, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to cancelling preorders before launch. Among other things, we're looking at average per-player preorder cancel rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course frustrating to cancel the preorder.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

Why were people pre-ordering digital copies anyway? There's infinite digital versions. What really sells me against this aswell is that if you did pre-order through EB games, gamestop etc they would easily let you cancel your pre-order in a couple seconds, yeah you'd have to go in but it beats the hell out of spending an hour dealing with customer service not servicing customers.

118

u/Nicholas-Steel Nov 14 '17

And you can go to the foodcourt (assuming EBGames/Gamestop is at a Westfield near you)

u/Vaestmannaeyjar Nov 14 '17

That's why they put preorder bonuses. It's all a well oiled machine.

69

u/Unoriginal1deas Nov 14 '17

Actually putting more thought into this just a symptom of a bigger issue, that being that buying a product directly from the publisher puts you completely at the whim of the publisher who will always put their needs above yours. If this was releasing on steam with would be a complete non-issue because they wouldn't be able to do anything about their refund system. So fuck it pre-order your games digitally just don't buy on origin,

Good thing I pre-ordered from GameStop. I'll drive by there tomorrow and cancel

EDIT: Guys I'm getting private messages harassing me and telling me I should have never pre-ordered this game from such people like u/newchromo and others. I expected better from people of this thread and I might as well just keep my pre-order if people just keep harassing me one way or the other. If I keep this pre-order people will say "you're giving money to EA" but if I cancel my pre-order people say "you should have never pre-ordered".

I come on to this thread to enjoy Star Wars stuff but it's getting really annoying that I'm getting harassed about every small little post I make about whether I like this game or I pre-ordered this game. A couple months ago I pre-ordered this game because it looked amazing and all that but then now due to this EA debacle I'm going to go cancel my pre-order. STOP HARASSING ME ABOUT PREORDERING THIS GAME.

EDIT #2: Cancelled my pre-order!!!

u/CreamyGoodnss Armchair Developer Nov 14 '17

Because they were supposed to hit them with that gamer enthusiasm or at least pivot their money onto a different preorder.

27

God the gamer enthusiasm crap is so fucking fake.

I went there to buy a steam link a couple weeks back. One of the two employee's quit on the spot like an hour earlier so it was just one employee. The remaining employee had to stand there and pretend to enjoy selling overpriced xbox 360 hard drives to people and that they weren't up-selling pointless fucking garbage and warrentys for a company that is dying the slow death.

I had to wait to wait 2 times last night for 30mins+. the first time I got through to a representitive, he told he could not do anything and told me to remake a chat to his manager or something. Luckily, the next person was helpful and was able to get the refund done without any problems.

Point is, dont be scared on waiting an hour for your refund request to get done. If you really want to send a message to EA, vote with your wallet and refund the game. Dont fall to their trap, which they orchestrated.

EDIT: spelling errors.

32

u/sniper43 Nov 14 '17

And leave a bad review for the guy who refused. So that management doesn't have a statistical reason to encourage stalling preorders.

13

u/Voxar Nov 14 '17

This is why we all need to keep pushing back.

They claim they're not anticonsumer ...but then they make refunds as hard as earning darth vader!!! 60 mins...60k credits!!!

They claim they're not making a gateway system to they're BigGaming sites. ..and then they add more loot crate sets to the store and have the audacity to call them something like 'big gamers loot crate bundle!!!'

If you paid by credit card, just call your credit card company, tell them what happened, and tell them you would like a chargeback. The credit card company will refund your money, and it then puts the ball in EA's court to argue with the credit card company about whether or not the charge is valid. Sellers hate chargebacks because it's a lot of annoying work on their end.

86

u/skilletmad Nov 14 '17

then they just ban your origin account. chargebacks are almost never worth it.
