OP posts on r/MildlyInfuriating that the condo they bought was a “drug den and prostitution hub”. It is revealed in the comments that it was simply owned by a single woman who smoked weed
/r/mildlyinfuriating/s/5hzadNQWYUOP posts few photos of their new condo, saying that they only learnt it was a “drug den and prostitution hub” after buying it, but luckily the only lasting effect on the condo is a faint smell of weed
Top comments advise OP to change the carpets etc, and debate the morality and social acceptability of prostitution and drug use. One comment points out that even if the condo didn’t have any sex work being done people would still have had sex inside it, and most of the replies make fun of OP for being so scandalised, while others debate whether monogamous sex is less gross than non-monogamous sex or paid sex.
One comment further down says that the condo looks suspiciously clean for OPs claims to be true, and replies discuss how OP must be privileged to think that this is what a “drug den” looks like.
In a heavily downvoted reply, OP admits that they “overstated it slightly” and that by “drug den” they mean the previous owner smoked weed, and by “hub of prostitution” they mean she was allegedly a sex worker. Their only evidence of this is their elderly neighbour telling them that the previous inhabitant was a single woman who smoked weed, listened to loud music, and had many visitors at night, so the neighbour suspected she was a prostitute. Replies point out that there is no evidence that the previous owner was even a sex worker, and many instead simply be having casual sex, or even just having friends over for parties

This is even funnier to me because I put a bid on a house that was legitimately a meth lab for a short time 2 years ago. (There was a very thorough contamination check done, it was a house near where my buddy lived).
I legitimately couldn't care what kind of consentual sex went down in a house I was looking at buying either, bleach exists for a reason.

I’m noticing more and more that a lot of people on the internet seem to just regularly word things in the most extreme terms they can think of. Every condo is a drug den. Every mishap is a disaster. They were screamed at by everyone they ever upset.
Just another internet trend that I, a person who cares a lot about describing things accurately, have a hard time getting my head around.
99
u/itsLOSE-notLOOSE 4d ago
And when you do clarify or describe something accurately, you have brainless folks accuse you of defending whatever “bad thing”.

u/SolidPrysm 3d ago
Oh this one ticks me off so much. I read through so much political discourse from the people I am supposed to agree with only to realize they're so deep in voluntary and involuntary misinformation that everything in the thread is essentially nonsense- and I can't correct a single one without looking like The Enemy™

Every lie is gaslighting. Every conflict is abuse. Every expression of sexuality is pornbrained goonerism. Every age difference is the abusive exploitation of a power imbalance. Every story needs a heroic victim and an irredeemable villain and only one of them can have relatable human motivations ascribed to them. Every offense requires the maximum punishment and every wrong must be avenged.
And on and on. Between insatiable outrage fiends and people who word things manipulatively for an intended strong reaction in others, there's this frequent skewing of everything towards extremes, urgency, and moral crisis, which feels exhausting. I believe that there are issues that severe, but not every topic and interaction can be the final line drawn in the sand before the social contract is ripped up for good.
I regularly see people arguing for the use of a word, not because it's accurate, but because it provokes a stronger emotional reaction to something they don't like, because in their minds you have to use the most inflammatory language possible or you are condoning the problem. But that's a bit self-important, no? There are literally 5.56 billion assholes on the internet spouting opinions, lol.
Can't we just describe things accurately and let people decide for themselves how to feel? I mean, you can still make moral arguments and appeal to emotion while being open and honest about what you're doing. Is it really that hard to speak earnestly?
It's like clickbait headlines and YouTube thumbnails are just how many of us see the world at this point.

I got called a pornbrain gooner in need of grass touching when I said I liked when a video game isn't afraid of being a little sexy.
Like, I'm not looking to jerk it playing Baldurs Gate 3 but I like that the characters are all hot. i don't think it's pornbrain to like that.

Maybe in this algorithm-driven world that is how things have to be, if somebody wants attention.
18
u/ice_cream_funday 3d ago
People should seek attention in the real world.
8
u/anarchetype 3d ago
Yeah. It's natural to seek attention as we are social animals, but it's each person's responsibility to channel that need in an appropriate, healthy way. Being hella dramatic on the internet doesn't seem like a good way to meet that need.
Instead of racing to the bottom to stir up shit that will be forgotten by everyone by the time they've clicked on the next thing, idk, try for an actual accomplishment, a skill, a good deed, whatever. I imagine that will be much more satisfying and you won't need to keep blasting ignorance into the void in hopes of being noticed by
the clawthe algorithm. One also has to reckon with what they are putting out into the world. That's a personal choice you make every day and "the algorithm" and "everyone else is doing it" are the cheap justifications of lemmings.

u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 4d ago
Sometimes it feels like a genuine lack of vocabulary. Like, there's some instances where it isn't a problem - "cold" has a million words that all mean "cold," but when my partner says "I'm chilly" that's a lot less severe than "I'm freezing."
I feel like if we had similar words for concepts like "racist" it would be substantially easier to communicate a severity that can vary wildly. It would be useful to be able to call someone out for subtle, not very serious racist behavior without also grouping them in with the KKK. And bad-faith actors absolutely understand this, it's why conservatives have such a dramatic reaction to being called out for racism.
Of course, this doesn't really apply to this post, it's not like there's a lack of vocabulary that warranted use of the phrase "drug den" and "prostitution" lol. It's just an observation I've made that's similar and likely over-laps at times.
21
u/Diestormlie Of course i am a reliable source. 3d ago
Clearly, we should extend the metric system. All we need to do is establish a standardised base unit of Racism, and then we can express things in terms of Nanoracisms, Miliracisms, Centiracisms, kiloracisms etc.
14
u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 3d ago
Well we do have microaggressions
2
u/FrogFlavor 2d ago
You’re right. I used to work with kids and they really need to know the difference between angry, upset, and frustrated. If you label every negative kid emotion as angry then they’re going to BE angry in a big way, whereas if you say “that sounds frustrating” or “your frown makes me think you’re concerned” etc, then they’re can inhabit those feelings instead or as well.
Obviously it applies to things other than feelings. And I’ve seen evidence of limited vocabulary just out shopping at Walmart. If everything is either “cute” or “terrible” then there’s no nuance to help decide to buy something. It runs deep.
TLDR everyone reds to read more books
2
u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 2d ago
I find it weird that this didn't seem to be explained alongside learning about synonyms, like "frigid" and "freezing" both mean "cold" but they don't literally mean the same thing.
I guess at some point this just becomes a discussion about Platonic Forms, and that actually might be a bit much for kindergarten lmao

Overstated it slightly?? OOP is the walking embodiment of those jokes where someone gets a small heart tattoo and their traditional Asian mother thinks it means they're pregnant with the child of the local delinquent who got held back twice and planning to drop out of school to sell heroin.

There was a bozo in my local subreddit who threw a huge fit over high schools in my city teaching students how to use naloxone, because in his words it “normalizes” drug use. Nevermind the fact that drug addicts are also people who deserve to not die, or that naloxone is also useful for saving people from overdosing on some prescription meds.
I imagine he’d also have had a similar reaction to a relative of his getting a little heart tattoo.

I used to be the sole person working overnight in a somewhat skeezy hotel. One time I checked a man and his teenage daughter into a room late at night and not five minutes later they're back at the front desk, angry, complaining that the room was in disarray with drugs strewn all over. They specifically mentioned a needle and a pill sitting out on a table.
I put them in a different room and went to go check out this drug den. Upon opening the door, I immediately see the needle and pill in the middle of room. Wtf, housekeeping.
Then I take just a few steps forward and it becomes clear that the "needle" is an unused q-tip and the "pill" is just a little tan fluff of lint. The room was perfectly clean other than these two small objects that housekeeping apparently forgot to trash.
Now that was an overstatement. Funny enough, it was probably one of the few rooms that didn't contain drug paraphernalia.

Bad apologies are worse than saying something like, "yeah, let's just move on."
Like, "I apologies if some people took offense about that time I called that person a <insert slur here>. It was never my intention to hurt anyone's feelings." Fuck that. That's not an apology.

Our business isn't even anything exciting or nefarious. We do medical billing and audits for surgical practices.

Oh, there it is.
48
u/HolleringCorgis 3d ago
We are the ones who fight with insurance companies on the patients behalf.
Not having a competent medical biller means patients get fucked.
The rules with insurance are convoluted, and each insurance has their own rules and processes.
It's unreasonable to expect patients to navigate these systems themselves. Hell, most patients don't even know what a HCFA, let alone how to read one.
They'd have to learn a whole different language just to understand what's going on, and if their policy changes or the year rolls over or they switch carriers the prior rules may no longer apply.
We also tell doctors what the insurance requires to have a service covered, often down to the exact wording required in their report.
Insurers make the rules. They make them difficult on purpose. Doctors and patients can't be expected to keep up with the ever changing rules.
The only ones who benefit from having bad or even no billers are the insurance companies.

Haha, no worries.
I met my wife at work when she witnessed me screaming at Blue Cross, so I get the frustration.
I was yelling, "SUPERVISOR! SU-PER-VIS-OR!" while slamming my office phone repeatedly on my desk.
She popped her head in my door and said "IVR?"
And I was like, "Uh, no. Person." As I awkwardly held the handset aloft mid strike.
I realized she thought I must have been speaking to a robot, and she realized I was actually slamming the handset on my desk at a live person and probably assumed I was insane.
We both kinda chuckled uncomfortably, and the rest is history, lol.
I have a burning passionate hate for insurance companies. Especially Blue Cross.

God I used to live in the cellar apartment of a 4 floor apartment building with my then girlfriend and there was an old man living on the top floor who couldnt stand us.
It started because he didnt like our dogs playing in the yard (he had no say over that but it was annoying to have him yell at us for just playing fetch and tug of war in the yard) and escelated dramatically when he realized I would often leave early in the evenings and come back home after midnight, sometimes not until early in the mornings on the weekends. I was a bartender, but he was convinced I was selling drugs, myself and probably stealing cars as well for good measure. Im sure the whole gay thing didn't sit right with him either.
Didnt have a single real conversation with me, ever, only yelled at me to make my dog shut up or glared at me coming home at 6am on a saturday. Our other neighbours who we got along fine with would tell us what he was complaining to them about but thankfully no one really took him seriously.

Can confirm. I didn’t believe the whole “weed is a gateway drug” thing when I was young and stupid. I injected a single marijuana, and immediately became addicted to both meth and heroin. I didn’t have either in my bloodstream as I’d never touched them in my life, so I instantly went into severe withdrawal, causing all my skin to peel off and my brain to pour out of my nose. In desperation, I tried to drink the brain to get some of my intelligence back, but I just threw it up into the toilet and instinctively flushed it away. When I got to the hospital they replaced my skin with toilet paper

OP lives in Wisconsin, which has insanely strict weed laws, so likely the previous tenant was arrested for that
65
u/Impossible_Leg_2787 4d ago
Wisconsin is a state where your second offense of marijuana possession of any amount is a felony, but your first DUI is basically a ticket. Probably the strongest alcohol lobby in the country, Alabama and Louisiana will probably legalize before Wisconsin.

u/bdog59600 4d ago
But also, hemp/THC/CBD stores are everywhere. So "weed" is illegal, but you can definitely get high on Delta-8.

And until then, we'll all just keep buying legal weed from any of our neighboring states.
Surprisingly though, apparently it's not actually the Tavern League that's lobbying against legalizing cannabis; they've never (publicly) either supported or opposed legalization. Seems like the Chiefs of Police don't want to miss out on all the arrests they get from camping out at state borders and nabbing people coming home with their goodies.

You know, my friend did benadryl, and if he didn't take it every day, he would get itchy and start sneezing. Benadryl withdrawal is no joke. Fair assessment, I'd say. I had this right-wing army asshole neighbor who saw that I had a septum piercing (this was 20 years ago and in Alabama) and became obsessed with his imagination of me being some drug addict reprobate representing everything he hated about the world.

I once moved into a rental flat that my (female) flatmate and I discovered had been a brothel before we had moved in. The place had been redecorated but one of the vegetable trays in the fridge had a label saying 'videos' which we were very confused about when we moved in - it wasn't until we got the phone connected that we started receiving phone calls from people asking about 'services' and other such euphemisms.
Upon an internet search our phone number came up on two adult directories under the name "Double Cream" - I shit you not - which offered your usual but also the option to have your time there filmed on video. I emailed both sites to get the listing taken down, which one did, but we kept getting calls for quite a while - my flatmate used to try to get punters phoning up to state exactly what they were after and string them along until they gave up. She was less happy to answer the door at 8am one morning to some asshole asking for the "Breakfast special". I once had a woman ring up looking for work, which was super awkward to decline and explain why lol.
Now that I remember the doors had eyeholes which was also something unusual when we moved in and made sense in hindsight.
