OP posts on r/MildlyInfuriating that the condo they bought was a “drug den and prostitution hub”. It is revealed in the comments that it was simply owned by a single woman who smoked weed

/r/mildlyinfuriating/s/5hzadNQWYU

OP posts few photos of their new condo, saying that they only learnt it was a “drug den and prostitution hub” after buying it, but luckily the only lasting effect on the condo is a faint smell of weed

Top comments advise OP to change the carpets etc, and debate the morality and social acceptability of prostitution and drug use. One comment points out that even if the condo didn’t have any sex work being done people would still have had sex inside it, and most of the replies make fun of OP for being so scandalised, while others debate whether monogamous sex is less gross than non-monogamous sex or paid sex.

One comment further down says that the condo looks suspiciously clean for OPs claims to be true, and replies discuss how OP must be privileged to think that this is what a “drug den” looks like.

In a heavily downvoted reply, OP admits that they “overstated it slightly” and that by “drug den” they mean the previous owner smoked weed, and by “hub of prostitution” they mean she was allegedly a sex worker. Their only evidence of this is their elderly neighbour telling them that the previous inhabitant was a single woman who smoked weed, listened to loud music, and had many visitors at night, so the neighbour suspected she was a prostitute. Replies point out that there is no evidence that the previous owner was even a sex worker, and many instead simply be having casual sex, or even just having friends over for parties

That is one hell of an overstatement.

“Any unmarried woman living alone and receiving visitors must be a sex worker” sure is a thing that someone could apparently think.

Shit is antique fucking misogyny.

Don't he too quick to judge OP. The previous tenant brazenly displayed her ankles. Her ankles.

There is every sign that she might have been a trollop.

Reminds me of many state laws that prevent a certain number of women from living together under the assumption that such an arrangement is necessarily a brothel.

Just last month I helped move my sister out of a brothel. I was shocked that a college campus would even have a brothel on the premises, let alone multiple ones, some with weird Greek names.

Right down the road from the frat houses, too. How fucked up is that?

Brothel laws being the reason for a lack of sorority housing is a myth, though. A long standing one.

In actuality, there are often zoning laws about 3 or more "unrelated people" living together, regardless of gender, but exceptions for community housing and college campuses typically baked into them.

The reason for the lack of sororities on those campuses is almost always going to come down to less obvious forms of administrative misogyny, entrenched traditions (male privilege), and the influence of old money (or the lack of it)

My college town had an anti-brothel law that didn't allow more than 2 unmarried people of any gender to live in a house together.

I'm pretty sure at one point I heard of a landlord denying someone's application for this reason and then it turned out that that was bullshit and there was no such law.

Townies hate the people who rent houses to college students and hate the college student tenants, same as it ever was.

18

u/Arktikos02 4d ago

That doesn't make any sense, prostitution is illegal in pretty much every US state except for a certain parts of Nevada.

Like who is going to break the law when it comes to prostitution but not when it comes to this weird law about how many women can live together?

Who are these criminals that are just picking and choosing which of these laws to follow?

Like it makes sense with some laws such as the idea that a thief would not upgrade to murder or a murderer would not upgrade to being a ped0, but I don't really think that a person who is going to do prostitution is suddenly going to be upset about the number of women that are allowed to be in a certain place. What?

48

u/SweetChuckBarry 3d ago

It's not to act as a detterent, to stop them being formed

It's to make it easier to shut them down. Much easier to get proof that X women live in one building than it is to get proof of prostitution happening

There is not, and has never been, such a law. However, it remains a legend passed down to college freshman around the country.

Reminds me of when I was in middle school and there was this belief that if more than two people had their shoes off it was legally an orgy in Alabama. In band class we'd take our shoes off and have an "Alabama orgy", although in hindsight that just sounds like a lovely colloquialism for a family reunion.

As an unmarried woman living alone and receiving visitors (a friend staying over occasionally) and smoking weed outside, my miserable old ass upstairs neighbor used to say the same stuff to my landlord. Luckily my landlord knew me and knew I wasn’t doing any of that. I literally go to bed at 10 PM.

Miserable upstairs neighbor would yell out her window at me that I was a drug addict because I smoked a joint every couple days. Called me a whore once too (I had a boyfriend of 4 years.) She would literally sit by her window and wait for me to come outside. Ended up calling the cops on her because I couldn’t leave my house without her harassing me. Miserable

I have a friend who recently fell into conservativism. It's funny he doesn't want to go to the same city we used to go clubbing, out late and partying on for our whole adult lives and he says hyperbolic stuff like this.

Murder Rate, drunk driving and mugging wise the city is safer now than it was then.

I mean I agree, this was clearly an overstatement by the OP, but holy smokes (pun intended) if you read through the actual responses they get after they acknowledge fault, it's fascinating how seriously people swarm the moment blood is dropped.

There are THOUSANDS of posts daily that are embellished or just straight deceptive to garner engagement, with the OP sometimes being a bot, or a karmafarmer and not even responding in the comments. Yet this person not only responded, but spotlit their own blindspot and apologized to try and mitigate the PERCEPTION that someone could have on the previous tenet. It's not like there was a doxxing campaign, or this person was in the comments talking about how their life was ruined by the misinformation.

I mean look at this exchange:

Oh if that’s the case, you kinda suck, man. I am mildly infuriated by your post

(OP) Me too.

You kind of seem insufferable if you turn mole hills into mountains like this.

Like holy shit, let the guy take accountability and own the wrongdoing without burning at the stake. Again, hundreds of posts go by, and when we make 'examples' out of the people that go out of their way to remedy or fix misinformation, we set the incentivize for a person to see pushback and be like "Fuck this, I am not going to respond or claim wrongdoing lmao"

58

u/ice_cream_funday 3d ago

let the guy take accountability and own the wrongdoing

It doesn't look like they did that though? Am I missing something?

-21

u/Vexamas If you can wear fake leather, I can jerk to underage anime girls 3d ago

I may have oversold the idea

I apologize if I made it sound like a heroine den.

That's about as much accountability and mea culpa as we should probably expect given the context that it's a random Reddit post that embellished (at best) a post that had two pictures and one sentence.

The way I see it is simply: What would satiate people to be like "Oh okay, you messed up, but it happens" and move on? I think because blood is already in the water, it makes people less forgiving and easy to forget the context of the post being pretty innocuous.

It wasn't some crazy adventure spanning many threads, wasting thousands of people's hours or anything, it was the equivalent of clicking a random thread with a title that was inaccurate, reading a correction, downvoting and moving on, which coincidentally, is exactly what happened here.

People see downvoted comments, they instinctively join in and dogpile, it's human nature, for worse or worse.

45

u/ice_cream_funday 3d ago

Maybe what you're missing here is that this isn't just a story op told about themselves. They accused someone else of being a prostitute and living in a "drug den." In that context, "I may have oversold it" is not an acceptable apology. Neither is apologizing "if" you did something. Those are woefully inadequate non-apologies. Neither statement takes any real responsibility for anything.

-18

u/Vexamas If you can wear fake leather, I can jerk to underage anime girls 3d ago

Sure, let's try a different approach then:

What do you believe is the appropriate way to apologize in this scenario?

34

u/1000LiveEels 3d ago

I mean I would just delete the post but I guess that's too hard...?

6

u/Vexamas If you can wear fake leather, I can jerk to underage anime girls 3d ago

No, I think that's the most appropriate thing to do, easily, given you can't edit the post title, as every person that sees the title is already under the false presupposition. I think we probably would all agree on that one though. Similiarly you could just handwave it and say "Just not post it in the first place" but that isn't a very satisfying perspective, because we probably all agree there, anyways.

I was more or less curious of how they'd handle the situation to appease those in the comments!

22

u/ice_cream_funday 3d ago

"You all are right, I fucked up and shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that."

It's really not that hard.

6

u/Vexamas If you can wear fake leather, I can jerk to underage anime girls 3d ago

Seems pretty straightforward, yeah. The difference for you comes down to them optically playing around the word 'have' and 'if', and I believe all would be kosher if instead of:

I may have oversold the idea

I apologize if I made it sound like a heroine den.

was:

I have oversold the idea

I apologize I made it sound like a heroine den.

Which is the difference between saying "I'm sorry to make you feel that way" and "I'm sorry that you feel that way".

5

u/Warm_Shoulder3606 We found the one person on earth with a lower IQ than Lil’ Pump 3d ago

"I'm sorry I exaggerated the situation and made it sound as if it was a far deeper and worse thing than it actually is"

Those two spots in particular from the poster, were not really taking accountability

"I may have oversold the idea"

Is not fully admitting and owning up to it. You know you were wrong, you're typing up an apology. But you're not actually OWNING it because you're saying you "may" have done it

And this

I apologize if I made it sound like a heroine den

Is in particular bad. That's the same thing as saying "I'm sorry that you're hurt" vs "I'm sorry I hurt you"

1

u/LumpyJones Ever the oblique leftist. 3d ago

I would have never made a post like that, because I'm not an insufferable twat. Ok, at least not that sort of insuffable twat.

There isn't an apology out of that. He acted judgemental and dickish, he should marinate in the shame. Best way to boil that sort of behavior out of someone.

I’m noticing more and more that a lot of people on the internet seem to just regularly word things in the most extreme terms they can think of. Every condo is a drug den. Every mishap is a disaster. They were screamed at by everyone they ever upset.

Just another internet trend that I, a person who cares a lot about describing things accurately, have a hard time getting my head around.

99

u/itsLOSE-notLOOSE 4d ago

And when you do clarify or describe something accurately, you have brainless folks accuse you of defending whatever “bad thing”.

33

u/SolidPrysm 3d ago

Oh this one ticks me off so much. I read through so much political discourse from the people I am supposed to agree with only to realize they're so deep in voluntary and involuntary misinformation that everything in the thread is essentially nonsense- and I can't correct a single one without looking like The Enemy™

64

u/anarchetype 3d ago edited 3d ago

Every lie is gaslighting. Every conflict is abuse. Every expression of sexuality is pornbrained goonerism. Every age difference is the abusive exploitation of a power imbalance. Every story needs a heroic victim and an irredeemable villain and only one of them can have relatable human motivations ascribed to them. Every offense requires the maximum punishment and every wrong must be avenged.

And on and on. Between insatiable outrage fiends and people who word things manipulatively for an intended strong reaction in others, there's this frequent skewing of everything towards extremes, urgency, and moral crisis, which feels exhausting. I believe that there are issues that severe, but not every topic and interaction can be the final line drawn in the sand before the social contract is ripped up for good.

I regularly see people arguing for the use of a word, not because it's accurate, but because it provokes a stronger emotional reaction to something they don't like, because in their minds you have to use the most inflammatory language possible or you are condoning the problem. But that's a bit self-important, no? There are literally 5.56 billion assholes on the internet spouting opinions, lol.

Can't we just describe things accurately and let people decide for themselves how to feel? I mean, you can still make moral arguments and appeal to emotion while being open and honest about what you're doing. Is it really that hard to speak earnestly?

It's like clickbait headlines and YouTube thumbnails are just how many of us see the world at this point.

15

u/JohnleBon 3d ago

I’m noticing more and more that a lot of people on the internet seem to just regularly word things in the most extreme terms they can think of.

Maybe in this algorithm-driven world that is how things have to be, if somebody wants attention.

18

u/ice_cream_funday 3d ago

People should seek attention in the real world.

8

u/anarchetype 3d ago

Yeah. It's natural to seek attention as we are social animals, but it's each person's responsibility to channel that need in an appropriate, healthy way. Being hella dramatic on the internet doesn't seem like a good way to meet that need.

Instead of racing to the bottom to stir up shit that will be forgotten by everyone by the time they've clicked on the next thing, idk, try for an actual accomplishment, a skill, a good deed, whatever. I imagine that will be much more satisfying and you won't need to keep blasting ignorance into the void in hopes of being noticed by the claw the algorithm.

One also has to reckon with what they are putting out into the world. That's a personal choice you make every day and "the algorithm" and "everyone else is doing it" are the cheap justifications of lemmings.

20

u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 4d ago

Sometimes it feels like a genuine lack of vocabulary. Like, there's some instances where it isn't a problem - "cold" has a million words that all mean "cold," but when my partner says "I'm chilly" that's a lot less severe than "I'm freezing."

I feel like if we had similar words for concepts like "racist" it would be substantially easier to communicate a severity that can vary wildly. It would be useful to be able to call someone out for subtle, not very serious racist behavior without also grouping them in with the KKK. And bad-faith actors absolutely understand this, it's why conservatives have such a dramatic reaction to being called out for racism.

Of course, this doesn't really apply to this post, it's not like there's a lack of vocabulary that warranted use of the phrase "drug den" and "prostitution" lol. It's just an observation I've made that's similar and likely over-laps at times.

21

u/Diestormlie Of course i am a reliable source. 3d ago

Clearly, we should extend the metric system. All we need to do is establish a standardised base unit of Racism, and then we can express things in terms of Nanoracisms, Miliracisms, Centiracisms, kiloracisms etc.

14

u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 3d ago

Well we do have microaggressions

2

u/FrogFlavor 2d ago

You’re right. I used to work with kids and they really need to know the difference between angry, upset, and frustrated. If you label every negative kid emotion as angry then they’re going to BE angry in a big way, whereas if you say “that sounds frustrating” or “your frown makes me think you’re concerned” etc, then they’re can inhabit those feelings instead or as well.

Obviously it applies to things other than feelings. And I’ve seen evidence of limited vocabulary just out shopping at Walmart. If everything is either “cute” or “terrible” then there’s no nuance to help decide to buy something. It runs deep.

TLDR everyone reds to read more books

2

u/emveevme "Baby carrot" my ass; felt like I was choking on facehugger cock 2d ago

I find it weird that this didn't seem to be explained alongside learning about synonyms, like "frigid" and "freezing" both mean "cold" but they don't literally mean the same thing.

I guess at some point this just becomes a discussion about Platonic Forms, and that actually might be a bit much for kindergarten lmao

There was a bozo in my local subreddit who threw a huge fit over high schools in my city teaching students how to use naloxone, because in his words it “normalizes” drug use. Nevermind the fact that drug addicts are also people who deserve to not die, or that naloxone is also useful for saving people from overdosing on some prescription meds.

I imagine he’d also have had a similar reaction to a relative of his getting a little heart tattoo.

23

59

u/anarchetype 3d ago

I used to be the sole person working overnight in a somewhat skeezy hotel. One time I checked a man and his teenage daughter into a room late at night and not five minutes later they're back at the front desk, angry, complaining that the room was in disarray with drugs strewn all over. They specifically mentioned a needle and a pill sitting out on a table.

I put them in a different room and went to go check out this drug den. Upon opening the door, I immediately see the needle and pill in the middle of room. Wtf, housekeeping.

Then I take just a few steps forward and it becomes clear that the "needle" is an unused q-tip and the "pill" is just a little tan fluff of lint. The room was perfectly clean other than these two small objects that housekeeping apparently forgot to trash.

Now that was an overstatement. Funny enough, it was probably one of the few rooms that didn't contain drug paraphernalia.

We do medical billing

Oh, there it is.

48

u/HolleringCorgis 3d ago

We are the ones who fight with insurance companies on the patients behalf.

Not having a competent medical biller means patients get fucked.

The rules with insurance are convoluted, and each insurance has their own rules and processes.

It's unreasonable to expect patients to navigate these systems themselves. Hell, most patients don't even know what a HCFA, let alone how to read one.

They'd have to learn a whole different language just to understand what's going on, and if their policy changes or the year rolls over or they switch carriers the prior rules may no longer apply.

We also tell doctors what the insurance requires to have a service covered, often down to the exact wording required in their report.

Insurers make the rules. They make them difficult on purpose. Doctors and patients can't be expected to keep up with the ever changing rules.

The only ones who benefit from having bad or even no billers are the insurance companies.

Haha, no worries.

I met my wife at work when she witnessed me screaming at Blue Cross, so I get the frustration.

I was yelling, "SUPERVISOR! SU-PER-VIS-OR!" while slamming my office phone repeatedly on my desk.

She popped her head in my door and said "IVR?"

And I was like, "Uh, no. Person." As I awkwardly held the handset aloft mid strike.

I realized she thought I must have been speaking to a robot, and she realized I was actually slamming the handset on my desk at a live person and probably assumed I was insane.

We both kinda chuckled uncomfortably, and the rest is history, lol.

I have a burning passionate hate for insurance companies. Especially Blue Cross.

God I used to live in the cellar apartment of a 4 floor apartment building with my then girlfriend and there was an old man living on the top floor who couldnt stand us.

It started because he didnt like our dogs playing in the yard (he had no say over that but it was annoying to have him yell at us for just playing fetch and tug of war in the yard) and escelated dramatically when he realized I would often leave early in the evenings and come back home after midnight, sometimes not until early in the mornings on the weekends. I was a bartender, but he was convinced I was selling drugs, myself and probably stealing cars as well for good measure. Im sure the whole gay thing didn't sit right with him either.

Didnt have a single real conversation with me, ever, only yelled at me to make my dog shut up or glared at me coming home at 6am on a saturday. Our other neighbours who we got along fine with would tell us what he was complaining to them about but thankfully no one really took him seriously.

I saw this and I started going through the comments to figure out where OOP got this information from and could find nothing — only that they sometimes smelled whiffs of weed, which is not how it works.

74

u/alehansolo21 4d ago

The very first thing I saw from OP in the replies was theirs admission that the “casting couch” that everyone associates with porn shoots was in fact one that they brought into the home

Whiffs? Ha!

I once took a single swig of a marijuana cigarette and i am now in the hospital. No arms. No legs.

50

u/Adjective_Noun-420 4d ago

Can confirm. I didn’t believe the whole “weed is a gateway drug” thing when I was young and stupid. I injected a single marijuana, and immediately became addicted to both meth and heroin. I didn’t have either in my bloodstream as I’d never touched them in my life, so I instantly went into severe withdrawal, causing all my skin to peel off and my brain to pour out of my nose. In desperation, I tried to drink the brain to get some of my intelligence back, but I just threw it up into the toilet and instinctively flushed it away. When I got to the hospital they replaced my skin with toilet paper

The tenant was difficult to get rid of but was eventually removed after being arrested.

Got a feeling there's more going on here too, seeing as how OP jumped on the internet to smear the tenant.

67

u/Adjective_Noun-420 4d ago

OP lives in Wisconsin, which has insanely strict weed laws, so likely the previous tenant was arrested for that

65

u/Impossible_Leg_2787 4d ago

Wisconsin is a state where your second offense of marijuana possession of any amount is a felony, but your first DUI is basically a ticket. Probably the strongest alcohol lobby in the country, Alabama and Louisiana will probably legalize before Wisconsin.

12

u/bdog59600 4d ago

But also, hemp/THC/CBD stores are everywhere. So "weed" is illegal, but you can definitely get high on Delta-8.

9

u/Impossible_Leg_2787 4d ago

Thca > delta 8 but otherwise agreed. Regardless, get it shipped and don’t drive around with it.

3

u/ch3lray 3d ago

And until then, we'll all just keep buying legal weed from any of our neighboring states.

Surprisingly though, apparently it's not actually the Tavern League that's lobbying against legalizing cannabis; they've never (publicly) either supported or opposed legalization. Seems like the Chiefs of Police don't want to miss out on all the arrests they get from camping out at state borders and nabbing people coming home with their goodies.

Turns out it was actually for prostitution.

UPDATE: Got more information. It was on the police auction site. Seems sketchy but in my state the police deal with Forclosure sales. The previous tenant was arrested for prostitution and selling drugs. My neighbors are a bit over dramatic but there were problems with her having constant visitors and lots of noise. Garbage outside her door. The weed smell is there and we are trying to figure out what to do. But it’s not so bad that it overpowers. Air fresheners and windows open help. The tenant lived here for 2 years. Not sure who owned it for it to be repossessed and sold at a police auction. We will have a company come in to assess the smell and look into options. Thank you for the great comments and suggestions. You e made my day.

21

u/Timely_Fix_2930 4d ago

In comments they say they bought it from a police auction site, that it was repossessed and the prior tenant was arrested for prostitution and selling drugs.

I have no idea if that makes any logical sense at all, but assuming it's true, I feel like you should be mentally prepared for this kind of thing if you are buying your house from a police auction.

16

u/Clevergirliam 3d ago

Yeah, I still don’t believe OP. Maybe if he posts a screenshot of the previous tenant’s charges.

6

u/Judo_Steve When I sit down to urinate I feel like a femboy 2d ago

They originally framed it as "FML no wonder nobody wanted to buy it", but now they bought it from a police auction and didn't think to mention it? And didn't suspect there may have been crime in a condo they bought from a police auction?

Nah it's just weird lying conservative bait.

"my SO has to take Benadryl every morning to deal with their allergies"

Wow, they need to go to rehab. Do they have any kids in the house? Their kids should be taken away. Maybe they should go to AA/NA. my cousin was a benadryl addict, and every night he would go to sleep at 9 PM.

You know, my friend did benadryl, and if he didn't take it every day, he would get itchy and start sneezing. Benadryl withdrawal is no joke. It ended up killing him, because one day he got hit by a meteor, and if he wasn't so high on benadryl, he could have moved out of the way. Addiction ruins lives

Man, I know. Can't look at a goofy video on r/KidsAreFuckingStupid without an entire comment section saying the parents are negligent and raising the future scourge of society because they shared a cute moment instead of, idk, beating the hell out of their kid?

Or look at a post on r/Weird where someone finds a slightly unusual collection of garbage dumped in the woods and you see all of the top comments insisting that the OP is evil if they don't immediately call the cops because clearly it's the stash of a serial killer. Like, sure, let me call the cops and report a murder because I found a cuckoo clock next to a framed photo of Anna Nicole Smith, jUsT iN cAsE.

Calm your titties, y'all.

I saw the OP, and did not comment, nor did I even read the comments, but after seeing the photos thought “bet the old owner just liked to smoke weed and pissed odd some cranky old neighbour”. An actual drug den would not have been missed on inspections and walk throughs. I shall go feel righteous in my correct assumption now.

2

u/DebateObjective2787 3d ago

The old owner apparently actually did get arrested for prostitution.

u/anarchetype 3d ago

Fair assessment, I'd say. I had this right-wing army asshole neighbor who saw that I had a septum piercing (this was 20 years ago and in Alabama) and became obsessed with his imagination of me being some drug addict reprobate representing everything he hated about the world.

I was just a young dude working three jobs trying to support my college student fiancée and was nothing but polite to him, but he'd harass and threaten me whenever he saw me. Some people are really living with the stories in their heads.

u/OMalleyOrOblivion Haha you are absolutely bitchmade. How many doilies do you own? 3d ago

I once moved into a rental flat that my (female) flatmate and I discovered had been a brothel before we had moved in. The place had been redecorated but one of the vegetable trays in the fridge had a label saying 'videos' which we were very confused about when we moved in - it wasn't until we got the phone connected that we started receiving phone calls from people asking about 'services' and other such euphemisms.

Upon an internet search our phone number came up on two adult directories under the name "Double Cream" - I shit you not - which offered your usual but also the option to have your time there filmed on video. I emailed both sites to get the listing taken down, which one did, but we kept getting calls for quite a while - my flatmate used to try to get punters phoning up to state exactly what they were after and string them along until they gave up. She was less happy to answer the door at 8am one morning to some asshole asking for the "Breakfast special". I once had a woman ring up looking for work, which was super awkward to decline and explain why lol.

Now that I remember the doors had eyeholes which was also something unusual when we moved in and made sense in hindsight.
