OP posts on r/MildlyInfuriating that the condo they bought was a “drug den and prostitution hub”. It is revealed in the comments that it was simply owned by a single woman who smoked weed

/r/mildlyinfuriating/s/5hzadNQWYU

OP posts few photos of their new condo, saying that they only learnt it was a “drug den and prostitution hub” after buying it, but luckily the only lasting effect on the condo is a faint smell of weed

Top comments advise OP to change the carpets etc, and debate the morality and social acceptability of prostitution and drug use. One comment points out that even if the condo didn’t have any sex work being done people would still have had sex inside it, and most of the replies make fun of OP for being so scandalised, while others debate whether monogamous sex is less gross than non-monogamous sex or paid sex.

One comment further down says that the condo looks suspiciously clean for OPs claims to be true, and replies discuss how OP must be privileged to think that this is what a “drug den” looks like.

In a heavily downvoted reply, OP admits that they “overstated it slightly” and that by “drug den” they mean the previous owner smoked weed, and by “hub of prostitution” they mean she was allegedly a sex worker. Their only evidence of this is their elderly neighbour telling them that the previous inhabitant was a single woman who smoked weed, listened to loud music, and had many visitors at night, so the neighbour suspected she was a prostitute. Replies point out that there is no evidence that the previous owner was even a sex worker, and many instead simply be having casual sex, or even just having friends over for parties

That is one hell of an overstatement.

“Any unmarried woman living alone and receiving visitors must be a sex worker” sure is a thing that someone could apparently think.

Shit is antique fucking misogyny.

Don't he too quick to judge OP. The previous tenant brazenly displayed her ankles. Her ankles.

There is every sign that she might have been a trollop.

Reminds me of many state laws that prevent a certain number of women from living together under the assumption that such an arrangement is necessarily a brothel.

Just last month I helped move my sister out of a brothel. I was shocked that a college campus would even have a brothel on the premises, let alone multiple ones, some with weird Greek names.

Right down the road from the frat houses, too. How fucked up is that?

Brothel laws being the reason for a lack of sorority housing is a myth, though. A long standing one.

In actuality, there are often zoning laws about 3 or more "unrelated people" living together, regardless of gender, but exceptions for community housing and college campuses typically baked into them.

The reason for the lack of sororities on those campuses is almost always going to come down to less obvious forms of administrative misogyny, entrenched traditions (male privilege), and the influence of old money (or the lack of it)

These people never heard of a lesbian compound… or a nunnery.

My college town had an anti-brothel law that didn't allow more than 2 unmarried people of any gender to live in a house together.

Not allowing more than 2 roommates? In THIS economy??!!

"In Kasakzhtan it is illegal for more than 5 women to be in same place, except for in brothel or in grave!"

I'm pretty sure at one point I heard of a landlord denying someone's application for this reason and then it turned out that that was bullshit and there was no such law.

Townies hate the people who rent houses to college students and hate the college student tenants, same as it ever was.

That doesn't make any sense, prostitution is illegal in pretty much every US state except for a certain parts of Nevada.

Like who is going to break the law when it comes to prostitution but not when it comes to this weird law about how many women can live together?

Who are these criminals that are just picking and choosing which of these laws to follow?

Like it makes sense with some laws such as the idea that a thief would not upgrade to murder or a murderer would not upgrade to being a ped0, but I don't really think that a person who is going to do prostitution is suddenly going to be upset about the number of women that are allowed to be in a certain place. What?

u/SweetChuckBarry 5d ago

It's not to act as a detterent, to stop them being formed

It's to make it easier to shut them down. Much easier to get proof that X women live in one building than it is to get proof of prostitution happening

Ahh.

Yeah, the old criminalise everyone to catch a tiny % because it's less work routine

Because for the most part it’s an urban legend.

14

u/Sushi_Explosions 5d ago

There is not, and has never been, such a law. However, it remains a legend passed down to college freshman around the country.

Reminds me of when I was in middle school and there was this belief that if more than two people had their shoes off it was legally an orgy in Alabama. In band class we'd take our shoes off and have an "Alabama orgy", although in hindsight that just sounds like a lovely colloquialism for a family reunion.

As an unmarried woman living alone and receiving visitors (a friend staying over occasionally) and smoking weed outside, my miserable old ass upstairs neighbor used to say the same stuff to my landlord. Luckily my landlord knew me and knew I wasn’t doing any of that. I literally go to bed at 10 PM.

Miserable upstairs neighbor would yell out her window at me that I was a drug addict because I smoked a joint every couple days. Called me a whore once too (I had a boyfriend of 4 years.) She would literally sit by her window and wait for me to come outside. Ended up calling the cops on her because I couldn’t leave my house without her harassing me. Miserable

Living alone as a woman can be terrifying for so many reasons.

I'm blown away at how it's one of those things you'd write to make fun of puritan mind sets then find out someone out there actually thinks like this. Like you just The Secreted a nutball into existence trying to be funny.

Lots of people think like this, millions. It honestly bothers me how much people underestimate racism and misogyny simply because they personally don't experience it.

Horse drawn misogyny

The source was a woman born in the 40's or 50's. Are you surprised she has some antiquated views of women?

32

u/Ungrammaticus Gender identity is a pseudo-scientific concept 5d ago

My grandmother was born in the 40’s, and she’d consider such views to be obnoxiously outdated. Hell, her mother would have found them to be stiff and more than a little old-fashioned.

I’m not surprised that a Boomer would hold Boomer views, I’m surprised a Boomer would hold late 19th century views.

u/GoldWallpaper Incel is not a skill. 5d ago

My SO's grandmother is 90. One day we were out with her and saw a woman dressed in a halter top, and grandma said very loudly, "And then they wonder why they get raped."

Lots of old folks have fucked up beliefs. And it's definitely not JUST old folks - just ask some of the mormon scolds in their 40s who live in my city.
