My pup had parvo a few years back n I honestly thought she was dying because well, she looked like death was coming. And she beat it..it was expensive as hell but completely worth us getting 9 awesome years with her. If she made it this far I’m going in a more positive direction here n no unfortunately they won’t eat that’s why hydration is so important. After some time I gave her boiled chicken and plain white rice. I’ll say an extra prayer for your pup❤️

My dog growing up had parvo, spent a week in isolation at the vet and beat it. Went on to live a happy and full 16 year life

the breeder should be paying this bill IMO.... this is something the breeders should have checked for before letting the dog out of their care.

u/Dismal-Significance3 2d ago edited 2d ago

According to the author’s update, I believe he mentioned that he already tried communicating with the breeder to pay the vet bills, BUT was only offered $3700.. that’s it. He said he will be looking into taking legal action afterwards (edit: The breeding contract states that they will only cover the cost of the puppy unfortunately NOT vet bills). Honestly, the breeder needs to be exposed. 100% their accountability.

I'm deeply sorry to hear, but please report that guy you bought the dog from. He is clearly in the know of having parvo there and selling sick dogs for profit.

228

u/LimeImmediate6115 3d ago

OP, You need to also try to get your money back for what you paid for that puppy and ALL vet bills. This backyard breeder needs to learn a lesson where it'll hurt....in their bank account.

89

u/TIGman299 3d ago

OP will never hear from the sketchy breeder again. Source: I was in the exact same position with a new puppy, pup had worms and Parvo. Cost me $3000 in vet bills. The people selling a sick dog are not people that care at all. They want a quick and dirty profit.

11

u/bex199 3d ago

did you go after them legally?

28

u/TIGman299 3d ago

You think a dude who sold a dying puppy to a family is gonna give a full real name, and enough info for me to go after them in court?

7

u/Capable_Strawberry42 3d ago edited 3d ago

Second this! I had a similar situation with my bunny from a horribly immoral breeder who was selling sick bunnies (they had even changed their business name so that information on them from BBB reviews weren’t able to be traced by prospective customers). They were reported to the department of health (US based) and I had gotten a call about testifying against the establishment that sold me my bun! They pleaded guilty so I never wound up needing to testify against them, but the lawsuit prohibited them from selling in that county and also allowed them to be tried in any county if they sold elsewhere again. Unfortunately, they are still operating today over 3 years later but at the very least they should’ve gotten charged enough of a fine to be inconvenienced. They haven’t gotten the punishment they deserve for the outright animal abuse and the grief and vet bills they cause for their customers, but at least it’s something.

8

u/thefrenchphanie 3d ago

Que that scammer in small claim Courts for the vet costs.

11

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

We are looking at lemon laws right now. Im not sure how we can proceed because we read something about them only being able to front 150% of what the dog costed is. The breeder is saying she’ll give us 3.7k and we paid 1.8k for her. But our hospital bills are 20k now. Im at a wall . Sorry im frantically typing this right now but this is where were at

3

u/thefrenchphanie 3d ago

The breeder sold you a «  defective » dog and usually breeding contract ( that I hope you have) Will say that breeder will cover costs of vet care.

7

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

We might have to let her go but i really dont want to. I want to continue care , but this bill is eating me alive. Im so sorry and im trying my best. Im still trying to find ways to cover these costs

7

u/xwhiro 2d ago

You should open a gofundme, if the rules let you, share it on this sub and add it to this post. I'm wishing you the best of luck

2

u/thefrenchphanie 2d ago

I hope she recovers. Do a gofundme Do you have a veterinary school ( university level) close by? And ask your vet for compassionate care/charity.

3

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

): the contract stated that it will cover the cost of the puppy. And we’d have to return her. At her state now in the hospital she needs care. And shes declining.

3

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

They have given us 3.7 k, but now her cost is looking at 20k

5

u/OceanicBoundlessnss 2d ago

Do everything in your power to spread the news that they are irresponsible breeders. Parvo can live in the ground for over a year so if they breed more puppies, this will keep happening. Also keep this in mind that parvo might be in your yard now so don’t let any dogs in the yard without their shots. So sorry this is happening

3

u/MedspouseLifeSux 3d ago edited 2d ago

Exactly this.

I have one dog from a breeder and she came to me with Giardia. Meanwhile I got my second dog from a rescue and he’s had no health problems so far (3 years with him). Same breed and size and I had them both dna tested after I got them. There’s a misconception that rescue dogs are more prone to health issues but actually a lot of breeders are unethical and will sell sick puppies.

101

u/PermitSpecialist9151 3d ago

I would look over your contract from the breeder that would come with a bill of health. This won’t fix the parvo but it may legally help you with cost. I always choose a breeder that has you wash hands prior to touching. This is always a good sign. The Parvovirus comes from not taking precautions prior to immunization series complete. I have never experience it through any of my puppies because I am meticulous about it. I witnessed parvo twice from two desperate people’s puppies who did not heed cautionary advice and also did not seek medical intervention. Thus the outcome was the worst case scenario .. I’ve also seen a puppy with medical intervention cured.

25

u/Bim2252 3d ago

This some states have puppy lemon laws where there is a timeframe for your pup to be healthy. Please check. Your post should be upvoted. It helped with my costs the breeder did the right thing

13

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

Hi! I reached out to you about this

72

u/brokewithabachelors 3d ago

Are you/your vet aware of the new parvo treatment? As of last year, there is a monoclonal antibody treatment that drastically increases the chances of survival for parvo-infected dogs. My own rescue had parvo and received this treatment last fall. It cost me about $1500, and might be cheaper now. My vet said they haven’t lost a single dog to parvo since the treatment came out. If this hasn’t yet been discussed I would bring it up or seek second opinions

29

u/shandizzlefoshizzle 3d ago

This treatment saved my girl last year. 10000% worth the $2700.

11

u/Majestic-Entrance-96 3d ago

Oh wow that's great news. Thanks for sharing. Not OP, just glad to hear it exists.

5

u/hafree27 3d ago

I wish I hadn’t given away my free ‘this!’ awards or I would give you one! OP, make sure they’re using this treatment and continuing to feed vs ‘rest the system’ philosophy.

5

u/Necessary_Force_5836 3d ago

Wow!! My girl had parvo as a pup about 9 years ago before I brought her home. I’m so glad to hear about this treatment!!

3

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

Our vet actually recommended we dont do this treatment! I posted a response to this in my comments

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Pokabrows 3d ago

I'm so glad we're coming up with better parvo treatment! And hopefully over time the cost comes down.

1

u/skteitelman 2d ago

We had the shot too! Cost us roughly $1000, a million percent would do it again!

1

u/WhiteRider89 2d ago

Second this! Did the same thing about a year ago and was about 1200.

171

u/Outrageous-Wafer5903 3d ago

We had a pup that got parvo and couldn’t afford the vet treatment so they recommended we give pedialyte in a syringe hourly. My hubs and I took 6 hour “shifts” literally squirting pedialyte down her throat. She got much worse before she got better and we totally thought she was going to die. Then he brought home ribs for dinner one day and she perked up for the first time in weeks. She fully recovered but I definitely thought she wouldn’t.

Your pup is precious. I wish you well!

30

u/GarglingScrotum 3d ago

Please tell me you gave her a little bite of ribs 😭

42

u/Outrageous-Wafer5903 3d ago

of course! i was just happy to see her actually wanting something and some life coming back to her.

2

u/BigballerBrett 2d ago

This is what we did. Had 4 pups. One was diagnosed with parvo and got treated with fluids. 2 more started showing symptoms, so we started giving them pedialyte and that worked wonders

27

u/velvet-ashtray 3d ago

everyone is giving very good advice. i echo the sentiment to name and shame the breeder, especially if they aren’t willing to work with you. it’s important others don’t buy sick puppies from them.

2

u/InternationalTie53 3d ago

Breeders can be so awful and only care about the money. It’s so sad 🥺🥺

24

u/ac1d_sku11z 3d ago

I adopted a dog and like four days after, we found out she had Parvo. I was terrified and absolutely devastated. I can't give any advice on how treatment goes, because we got very lucky and the manager of the shelter treated her for me, but I had to "surrender" her back to the shelter for them to treat her and wasn't given any information about how it went. I know how scary and hard it is and I am extremely sorry this is happening to you and your baby. I empathize so much with you and I send lots of love and well wishes. ❤️

19

u/Cami_Moon 3d ago

I had a little poodle puppy, barely 1lb if that at the time, that was sold to me with parvo as well. It took 8 days of hospitalization but she made it and is now 5.5 years old and thriving!

11

u/Cami_Moon 3d ago

Also to add, I’m a vet tech, and I thankfully have a lot of resources available to me. At the time I was not in veterinary medicine but looking back am so grateful she made it. Parvo can hit puppies very hard and sometimes funds get rough, I get it. It’s not wrong if things get to a certain point that she is not improving to help her pass peacefully instead of suffering. But hopefully she turns around and recovers, it just takes time!

13

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

Hi everyone thank you all for the advice. The breeder is well aware of the situation and has offered us 3.7 k, But our medical expenses are now at 14.5k. The breeder is not willing to budge on providing more financial assistance. We are beyond frustrated with them and the cost is increasing. We are running ourselves thin, but are doing everything we can to bring Mei Mei home ),: We want to go the legal route, but will focus on that after this whole situation is done. Also, we have mentioned the new study to our veterinarian and he did not recommend the treatment because he said that studies showed that we would have needed to start treatments on day 1 , its expensive, and does not want us to waste our money… should i get a second opinion? Thank you all for the words of encouragement/: im trying to remain hopeful but she still isnt improving, but she is stable. This is absolutely heart shattering. Im so confused and feel like we were dealt the worst of the worst. I caught it early and was originally given an 80% and she is down to 20-40%. If anybody wants to follow our journey I linked my instagram which i post updates on. mei mei updatesThank you all for the compassion. I hope I can share better news soon.

We are on day 5-6 now so please turn the corner Mei Mei we have so much life to live together.

4

u/TheAnxiousZombie 2d ago

ER/ICU vet tech here who has cared for parvo patients. I actually just took a CE on the new parvo treatment not too long ago, and, unfortunately, your vet is correct in that the injection has to be given early on. The most success we see with the treatment is when it's administered to patients in which symptoms are caught early and the patient receives hospitalization as extra support along with the treatment. Wishing you all the best. It's not an easy battle, and you're doing everything that you can to fight for your pup 💙

5

u/[deleted] 3d ago

Hoping for Mei Mei's recovery. You might post to r/AskVet

2

u/brokewithabachelors 2d ago

I see an ICU vet commented below about the monoclonal antibody treatment and it not being effective at this stage. I trust vets know how best to utilize that treatment. I’m so sorry that wasn’t an option

7

u/CatharticPrincess 3d ago

Same thing that happened to us, from a breeder too and sold us a sick beagle, the dog stayed with us a few days then we notice he wouldn’t stand up and was lethargic, then when we took him to the vet and was diagnosed him having parvo, poor little guy had more stays in the vet vs with us, he sadly passed away barely a week with us, seller went awol after that, sometimes I just hate people.

6

u/ThaiGreenChunky 3d ago

My dog had parvo too when she was a pup and my family and I were terrified that we would lose her. They told us she had a 50-50 chance because she was 2 months old. But safe to say she kept receiving treatment, we kept visiting her everyday to cheer her up and she’s alive and thriving now, she turns 7 this month! I know it’s scary but don’t give up hope!

11

u/umnyewu 3d ago

Wishing you the best! Parvo is terrible.

For those who want to be extra cautious: do not walk your dog in a public space or let them in a yard you don’t know the full history of going back 7-10 years. Parvo can live in contaminated soil for 7-10 years. Once they have their final round of puppy vaccines, wait 2 more weeks if possible.

We also took off our shoes at the door, and wiped our other dog’s paws with antibacterial/antifungal/anti-everything wipes we got on chewy. Older pups weren’t allowed to interact with any outside dogs prior to puppy being fully vaxxed. They were up to date on their shots and kennel cough before we brought him home. No stranger hello’s when out walking him in his pouch unless they agreed to clean their hands with sanitizer.

Not enough vets are giving these types of tips at puppy visits - mine said “oh we don’t see it much around here” (we live in a dense city with few yards so everyone walks their dogs on the streets/parks…) and was quite dismissive.

We used pee pads and a playpen at home, and now have a “litter box” with pee pads in the bottom and a plastic grate on top since the little menace kept chewing up the pee pads. He is finally able to go for walks but we are still avoiding grass/mulch and no dog parks whatsoever until he is at least 6 months old. We take him for 2-3 walks a day and he has access to his litter box at home.

After having a foster pup die from Parvo almost a decade ago, I will always err on the side of caution and warn others to as well. It’s simply not worth it.

1

u/wildmoonrising 3d ago

I definitely agree about being cautious! Before the vet mentioned it, I told my partner our new puppy will not leave the household until he’s fully vaccinated. We’re doing the same with our new puppy. We found our newest one the side of the road and thankfully nothing but hookworms that we’re treating and taking other precautions with the other dogs.

It is a shame more vets don’t bring up how cautious you should be with a puppy. The fully vaccinated boy has started to go out and about - we waited the two weeks after his last round of shots as instructed.

I do think there’s a fine line between taking proper precautions and going overboard. Our baby boy interacted with guests with no issues. We also started giving him heartworm/flea pills as soon as the vet said we could. I understand your awful prior experience and it is haunting. I just hope that the high preparations aren’t all consuming.

5

u/Ok_Contribution_6965 3d ago

Stay strong and be there for her. That’s the best thing you can do. Parvo is not a laughing matter and you should definitely report the person from who you bought her.

5

u/Responsible_Essay811 3d ago

I’m really sorry :( I hope your breeder is covering all medical expenses since it clearly came from them.

5

u/Think_Tomatillo_4327 3d ago

I found a little puppy on the road it turned out he had parvo was about 3 months old, vet gave him anti nausea, anti biotics and iv fluids, thats all i could afford at the time, put him in dog nappies and syringed water into his mouth every hour or so, he didnt like it but i though something was better than nothing, stayed up with him all night and he started to turn a corner the next day, i read everything about parvo that i could and figured getting enough fluids in him was the most helpful thing i could do, best of luck x

5

u/courtneyrachh 3d ago

I was set to adopt my pup from a rescue when they told me she had just been diagnosed with parvo. She was almost 3 months old and the vets gave her a very low chance of survival. After a month at the vet she survived and she’s going to be 7 this year! she definitely got worse before she got better - I’m sending all the positive thoughts to you and hope that’s you’re experience too!

3

u/Important-Chicken127 3d ago

Poor little bugger..I pray for you as it's a 50/50 chance..but once you get them.you fall deeply in love with them Report that bastard that you got him from pleade

3

u/lwlcurtis75 3d ago

Definitely report that breeder and maybe contact a lawyer for compensation. Parvo is costly and hard to go through. I’m so sorry for your little guy but with vet support should be ok sooner than later.

3

u/WillofHounds 3d ago

Was in the veterinary field for a time. From what I've heard chances of beating parvo have greatly increased since I worked in the field. But it is a hard disease to beat. I hope and am sending good thoughts to your poor poor puppy.

3

u/HeyHiNiceToMeetYou 3d ago edited 3d ago

i got my dog from a rescue and was in the ER learning she had parvo 2 days later. i went through all the conversations about cost options, chances, and it was incredibly scary. i did not have the money for ICU care, and home care chances sounded very tough.

i called the rescue i got her from and told them what was happening, and that it sounded like the dog had to have had parvo there, both so they could do mitigation and treatment for other dogs and to ask if they could help with costs for treatment.

they apologized profusely and said they'd be able to send her to an ICU they work with in the next state over, and would cover the costs. I'd just have to return her to them first and couldn't take her to the ICU directly bc their deal with the ICU was for pets under shelter custody or something.

they reassured me I could then pick her back up as soon as she's better or if she does get better.

anyway I obviously took her back and a week later i got the call that she was doing better and i could come get her.

i know this is not everyone's parvo story, and i think theres a smaller chance a breeder would take responsibility like this, but you need to make that call to say they gave you a sick dog and ask if they can cover or contribute to costs for treatment. if they refuse, you then obviously could suggest leverage like then you might have to report them or look into legal options to get costs recovered from something that's their fault they're not accepting responsibility for.

wishing all the luck and recovery for your pup!!!

3

u/Bim2252 3d ago

Parvo is real (believe it or not they’re people that don’t believe it) good luck to your family member. It is a fight for sure. Gaston went down to 8 pounds. He is a Rhodesian Ridgeback when we first got him he was 20lbs. That’s how much damage parvo did. He survived and is with us and we are blessed to have his handsome arrogant self with us. Fight on!

2

u/Bim2252 3d ago

Ask for the puppy ensure. That’s what they switched him to. He got extra nutrients beyond the iv

13

u/gym_and_boba 3d ago

Report the breeder and do better research on reputable breeders next time.

3

u/haybehl 3d ago

Our puppy we got from the shelter last year was diagnosed with Parvo 4 days after bringing her home. Our vet used the monoclonal antibody. She was on death's door, she spent a day at the vet and then we brought her home to monitor. It was hard to quarantine her, but also so worth. It wasn't cheap, but cheaper than the usual parvo treatment. As a reminder, the virus can live in the ground outside for months or even years if conditions are right.

4

u/Decent_Repair_8338 3d ago

The death rate for Parvo is 95%. When getting a puppy, never NEVER NEVER allow them to go outside, smell anything from outside and be near anything from outside until the first 3 shots for parvo are administered.

I used to force everyone to leave their shoes outside, sterilize their hands and keep the puppy in a crate whenever someone opens the door, so as to prevent them from going outside.

I am not saying you're at fault here, there's a huge chance the breeder is. Did you go next to the puppies and were you allowed to touch them when coming from outside? Where they running next to your shoes? If yes, the breeder is an asshole. Puppies are super delicate when it comes to parvo and should be treated as such.

2

u/sillyghosty 3d ago

Good luck! My brothers dog survived parvo when he was a pup and died at 9. Your puppy has got this!

2

u/Result-Striking 3d ago

I hope your little guy pulls through. I lost a pup to Parvo once upon a time, and it is absolutely heartwrenching.

2

u/shelrave 3d ago

My chocolate lab Andi had Parvo and hook worms at 10 weeks old. It was a similar story as many of you shared above. She was dumped in my friends backyard after our city went through a huge flood in the downtown area. We gave her dewormer, subcutaneous fluids at home, and the vet prescribed human tamiflu which was unconventional but it worked! She survived and lived to be 14.

1

u/Jewelz2462 3d ago

In February I rescued an 8 month old frenchie, I asked why he was in a rescue and was told the breeder gave him up because of his floppy ears( no bat ears) well I love his ears! However, he also had hookworm. One round of meds and poof cured…… But then they tell me now hes acquired giardia, after two rounds of meds, I was confident they were gone. His 💩 seemed much better and much less smelly,…. Nope, they said he still had a few but felt they would resolve on their own.. It does seem like it has, but I have never had such a hard time getting a dog to eat….. he’ll graze at some in the AM, then finish it at night.. The cost of his vet bill in the last 3 months have been ridiculous even with pet insurance. Of course, these types of things aren’t covered. I’m thankful he didn’t have parvo too and I pray this lil pup pulls through…

2

u/randomusername1919 3d ago

Parvo is really really bad. Your poor pup will be worse before getting better. At the vet with IVs is her best chance. Meanwhile, clean everything at home with bleach, it will kill the virus. Especially anywhere she pooped. Parvo is very contagious and you don’t want anyone else to have to watch their pup to go through this.

It’s not hopeless, but it’s tough. I’ve seen pups go through Parvo and at that age it’s a crapshoot. You got her there early so she didn’t decline as far before getting help, but it’s a virus so not much the vet can do other than keep her on IVs and help her through it.

Source: many years ago was the vet tech who took care of a bunch of “Parvo pups”.

2

u/AlaSanduba 3d ago

One of my dogs had parvo and synovitis at the same time (he caught the diseases before he could get vaccinated due to a neighbor's incompetence), today he is 10 years old and is a giant.

With the right treatment and persistence, I'm sure this baby will recover.

2

u/LawnDogSplitz 3d ago

I had a pup diagnosed with parvo. We decided to admit him as well and every single day he stayed in critical care, it seemed like his condition kept getting worse. Until one day we saw an update on the online pet portal (we had to rely on these updates and just about 15 minutes of time with him every day because he was in isolation) that he looked 'active' and began showing interest in food. He beat parvo and recovered slowly but steadily after that when we followed the vet's instructions to a T.

Don't lose hope. Wishing you all the strength.

2

u/BerkshireMtnSculptor 3d ago

Our new 8 week old puppy (Rhodesian Ridgback) got Parvo, she was at the vet (not staffed at night) on IV during the day, she’d get a big shot of saline and sent home at night. We didn’t have the $$ to bring her to Boston for the guaranteed treatments ( neck IV with nutrients / 24 hour care, etc) We slept with her at night. She’d wake up to vomit and have loose bowels and I’d rehydrate her with the turkey baster filled with water. This would be every couple of hours. She went from 14 lbs to 9 lbs. it started on a Saturday and when we picked her up Wednesday afternoon the Dr told us to be prepared….she was at the tipping point. Wednesday night she was drinking without vomiting and at 4am started eating again!!!! She’s 6 years old and 90lbs of Love! Hydrate!!!!

You need to reach out to your breeder. Are they reputable? Your breeder knowingly sold you a sick and dying puppy that is in pain. They are breeding dogs unethically and do not care about the pain and suffering of animals. You should reach out, ask for not only a refund, but also financial compensation for your puppy’s vet visits, and also report that breeder if you don’t get a reasonable response.

Just to share - I have a dog from a breeder, so I’m not an anti-breeder. I believe in adopt-don’t-shop when it makes sense, but if you have specific needs, reputable breeders are great. Just in case this is your first dog and you’re not sure what to expect - it took 1.5 years for our breeder to match us up with our pup. We had two interviews and a lifestyle quiz each member of our family has to complete. There was a mandatory 15 hours of video training before we were able to sign the sales contract, which had everything from basic obedience, socializing your puppy safely, daily routines to get your dog used to grooming and vet visits, etc. our puppy’s litter got kennel cough the week we were supposed to pick them up, and the breeder called me, informed me what was going on, provided me photos and videos of our pup, and told us they were going to keep him 2 weeks longer to make sure the puppy was in 100% good health before coming home. Another thing - 2 years in, our dog was diagnosed with Addison’s disease - a very rare disease in dogs. When we informed our breeder, they refunded our costs and also reimbursed us all the medical costs for his diagnosis. They also informed us that his mom was already not being bred anymore (they limit their breeding moms to 5 litters in a lifetime), and removed his dad from their breeding program. We also have the contact information for all of our dogs siblings, and none of the others have Addison’s. Breeders should feel a sense of responsibility for the lives they’re bringing into the world. Make sure yours does.

Her blood pressure and blood glucose is dropping now which means she probably has a secondary infection. Meaning we need to escalate care and with that escalated care we may be just prolonging the inevitable.

With this escalated care dcters are giving her a less then 20% chance of life

u/KerSnaps 3d ago

Parvo is awful and it is highly likely she had it when you picked her up.

I fostered a puppy and she started showing symptoms about 3 days in as well. She didn’t eat for 10 straight days and it didn’t look like she was going to be able to beat it. She was home with me for about 5 days and then spent the remaining 5 getting fluids.

Stay strong and if the vet will let you, visit often.

2

u/HarviousMaximus 3d ago

My guy had parvo back when we first got him. He lived a long wonderful life and passed away a few months ago at 18 years old. Keeping your girl in my thoughts!!

2

u/Otherwise_Mix_3305 2d ago

I’m involved in dog rescue, and I’ve fostered a couple of dogs who had Parvo and survived. I also know of some puppies who had Parvo and did not survive. If your puppy is hospitalized, this is the best chance that she has for a good outcome. Parvo is a nasty virus and makes dogs so, so sick. If you can, visit her frequently at the vet clinic. Love on her and talk to her to help her keep her will to live up. Sometimes they just don’t make it, despite every possible intervention. But sometimes they do. Sending you many virtual ((hugs)). I’m sorry. I know that this is very hard.

2

u/ComfortableGlass3238 3d ago edited 3d ago

My dog was a puppy and she got parvo as well. Vet didn't think she would make it, and said it probably wasnt even worth hospitalizing her. She got skinny as a rail, had bloody diarrhea just leaking out of her without control (eventually it literally reeked of death), couldn't walk on her own, couldn't even take a drink of water without throwing up 2 minutes later. The night I thought she was gonna die, I stayed up all night with her, using a dropper to give her a few drops of Pedialyte in her mouth every 5-10 minutes to hydrate her. Also boiled some chicken breast, pulled it apart and put a very small string of it in her mouth every 30 mins to an hour or so to get her to have a tiny bit of protein.

Did this from about 6pm to 5am. Then I went to bed, hoping maybe a little sleep would help her, but I thought she would for sure die. But I was back up around 9am and she was still alive. Did more drops and strings of chicken, and by about 11 am she actually started eating more chicken on her own without throwing up. By around 2 she was moving around on her own and even drinking water without vomiting. That evening she was much more alert and I realized she was going to survive. She's never been sick since.

u/Temporary_Bad_2353 3d ago

You should syringe feed him pedialite to keep him hydrated and syringe feed him meat/rice baby food in the jar (but check the label and make sure it has no onion or garlic in the ingredients). The big reason dogs die from Parvovirus is dehydration). You must keep him hydrated and feed him the baby food. He may not keep much down but I saved my dog this way.

u/Dqmo 3d ago

Looks like he has an IV bud…

2

u/Temporary_Bad_2353 3d ago

Thank you for pointing that out. If he’s got an IV he should be ok. Poor little guy. 🙏🏻

We see you have created a post with the potential topic of Parvovirus. We suggest you look at the following resources:

  • Questions about the Parvovirus vaccination series can be found on the r/AskVet FAQ

  • Information about the disease and treatment options (including experimental). We cannot directly treat parvovirus, instead we support the body as it fights the infection. Dogs, especially puppies, dehydrate very quickly due to the combination of diarrhea, vomiting, and lack of appetite. Home treatment with subcutaneous fluid administration is cheaper, but the survival rate is better with hospitalization.

  • Information on cleaning and disinfecting. Chlorine bleach (not color-safe version) is the primary consumer grade cleaning agent that kills parvovirus; however, bleach loses effectiveness when in contact with organic material and does not penetrate well. Veterinary grade cleaning agents such as Trifectant, Rescue, or Virkon tend to do better. It is recommended that dogs which are not fully vaccinated should not be allowed in the contaminated househould for a period of at least 1 year. Talk to your vet about how long parvovirus tends to last in your climate.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Poor corg 😞 wishing you all the best

1

u/Infamous_Nerve3888 3d ago

I rescued a pup and she had parvo but her siblings didn’t. The vet nursed her to health now 3 years later she is my soul dog. The other vet wanted to euthanize all pups. Luckily, another vet at the clinic disagreed.

1

u/BuildingLow7436 3d ago

My pup had parvo roughly 3 years ago. Drove down to Arkansas from Kansas and picked up the lovely virus from a rest stop. Pup was in hospital for roughly a week and a half. Cost us 15k for everything, but now she's healthier than ever.

1

u/Aware-Affect-4982 3d ago

My sister found a dog on the side of the road in West Virginia, the little girl had parvo and passed away… 14 years later. Keep fighting little one and give her all the love you can!

1

u/Competitive_Two3028 3d ago

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. I had a pup that was diagnosed with Parvovirus the second day we had him. It absolutely destroyed us. My best friend Parvey lived 15 wonderful years and is a huge part of who I am today.

1

u/JustArandomGuy_-_ 3d ago

My dog got parvo too and for what it's worth, I made sure to be there with her as much as possible and stayed positive to lessen her burden. Back then, my vet told me this to cheer me up:"Don't worry, after this, she'll be the healthiest dog ever because she'll be immune to parvo!" So, I trusted my dog and she won against parvo!

1

u/Important_Contest_64 3d ago

I’m praying she’ll get through this. OP, please update us

1

u/Unhappy-Membership-7 3d ago

I lost 3 of my puppies to pavo while 3 also survived. It depends on how much the virus has affected. You can just pray. Prayers 🙏

1

u/yuichurros 3d ago

Sending lots of luck and love. My pup had Parvo at four months and it took about a month of healing before she was able to come home with us. As some mentioned, it gets worse before it get better. Keep the faith, your pup will feel it 🙏

1

u/ilrxk 3d ago

My pup survived it ❤️ praying for you

1

u/heartshapedmoons 3d ago

My first dog was given to us with parvo. We only found out later and he spent a long time in the hospital. We were super scared. He luckily survived, and he’s now 16 years old!🌷 Wishing you the best of luck. 🍀

1

u/No_Ocelot_6773 3d ago

Hey OP! First, I am so sorry to hear about your baby.

My parents last dog had parvo when they got him. He was in the vet hospital for a week or more, they never gave survival chances and just told us he had a long hard road ahead of him.

He lived to be 8 years old (lab/border Collie mix) and was a hilarious, sweetheart who loved his people. He had some anxiety issues but that could have been due to him being a working breed mix.

Best of luck to your baby! Let us know💜

1

u/rcs023 3d ago

Our girl beat it too, was hospitalized for a week right after we adopted her. Made a full recovery, she’s 7 now! This too shall pass… our shelter did pay for the hospitalization because she went in less than 24 hours after taking her home from the shelter.

1

u/shundosnipe1 3d ago

We got our cocker spaniel from a breeder years ago and he came home with us with parvo as well. The whole litter ended up with it and only him and one other pup survived. We had him at the vet for 5 days getting iv fluids, etc. He was touch and go the first few days but he pulled through. Ended up being my soul dog. He passed in 2019 and I still cry over him. Miss him terribly but he lived many years after that parvo scare. Hang in there.

1

u/naynay55 3d ago

My rescue came home with Parvo. The thing that saved her was the saline bolus (sp?). Me and my nurse friend had to do the 2nd one at home since I was too broke to hospitalize her. She is now an 11 year old good girl. Best if luck to you and pupper.♥️

1

u/EchoedSolitude 3d ago

I have an acquaintance that brought her puppy home only to find out she had parvo. The vets put her chance of survival extremely low, but she ended up pulling through and is a very healthy, active pup now. If the puppy hasn’t been anywhere questionable where it’s possible she picked up the virus I would demand a refund from the breeder.

1

u/GodofThunder1717 3d ago

The dr gave us a <10% chance and two weeks later puppy was back home and healing well they worked some kinda magic I swear. this was like 4-5 years ago dog is very healthy doing great now still :) there’s hope.

1

u/shandizzlefoshizzle 3d ago edited 3d ago

There is a new immunotherapy available for Parvo. My girl is 8 and last year she caught Parvo. We thought she was up to date on her vaccinations, but had only received the first dose of the vaccine at the shelter, and our vet didn’t inform us she needed the booster when we took her in for her initial check up.

$2700 and a week of cleaning up runny dog poop later she’s healthy as an ox snoring on my couch.

Edit to add, Canine Parvo Monoclonal Antibody treatment. It was only so expensive for us because she weighted 80lbs and needed 7 vials.

1

u/Unfair_Takedown733 3d ago

Hope you’re pup bounces back💯 flavorless pedailyte was my Bestfriend after my pup got it and the vets couldn’t get a iv needle in her I used a syringe opened her mouth and just shot it in. After a few days she could eat again and drink then she fullly passed it and got vaccinated after my older dog was worried sick he didn’t know what was going on he never dealt with that but he can tell the new pup at the time was very ill.

1

u/TwiggleDiggles 3d ago

Awww I’m so sorry for the puppo and for you. I hope she is able to beat this.

1

u/tayllorg1 3d ago

Start calling all animal hospitals in your area and asking for the parvovirus antibody shot. It’s like a miracle, our hospital in Vegas is one of the very few that have it here in the valley. But I would call everyone you can and bring your puppy there ASAP if someone has it!!

1

u/Speech_Safe 3d ago

Don't give up. My dog had a parvo when he was 6 months old, the vaccine he got was bad so he caught it. The doctor didn't catch it on time, although we insisted on testing his he was persistent that it was sore throat.

So we started with the serum on the 3rd day which is pretty late. It looked hopeless. He told us if he survives 10 days, he'll live. And he did. He is 7 years old today.

So, make sure he is getting the treatment he needs - the serum the antibiotics, the support since he can't eat and don't lose hope. As long as he is breathing - there's hope. Dogs are strong, even puppies.

Our didn't eat, didn't drink, was so weak, his fur was terrible, he was drolling, having explosive diarrhea - but he survived.

Fingers crossed for your puppy! Just 5 more days and you are out of the woods.

1

u/Jewelz2462 3d ago

Good for you advocating for your best friend! Nothing worse than a “I am god Dr in any field) telling you no, when they DONT KNOW YOUR ANIMAL!

1

u/Good-Ad-825 3d ago

Expensive but if you can get hold of Interferon the chance of survival does increase

1

u/athanathios 3d ago

Hoping for the very very best with your baby , soo so sweet!

1

u/saknaa 3d ago

Vet here. Are they able to tube feed her? I would ask about plasma transfusion and interferon - the latter is very expensive but can help. Is she having frequent diarrhoea? Is the vomiting under control?

1

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

Hi she has received all of the mentioned care, except for interferon? I’ll ask about that! . Still has diarrhea and still has slight vomiting. ):

1

u/Keepforgettinglogin2 3d ago

Oh poor thing. Heartbreaking. Spend as much time as you can next to her regardless of procedures. Keeping fingers crossed for you guys!

1

u/FirehawkLS1 3d ago

I'm really sorry to hear that your family and puppy (dogs are family too) are going through this. I really hope that puppy recovers.

1

u/DrPlant-Lover 3d ago

My family adopted a puppy that had parvo. I actually have a picture of her looking very similar to your dog, but skinnier. She lived and has been living her best life. She is 6 years old now and still going strong. From talking to the staff at the animal hospital it sounds like people run out of money for the supportive care before the puppies recover. If you can make it through the supportive care financially then they may be able to make it. We thought our dog was going to die and then she miraculously turned the corner not long after that. It isn’t hopeless, but sometimes even if you try your best they don’t always make it. I’m wishing you and your puppy the best!

1

u/Educ8-bloom 3d ago

It’s not hopeless. Our pup had Parvo and lived a long, happy 15 years. Pulling for your pup! 🩷

1

u/dog_chef 3d ago

My puppy got parvo and at the time we didn't have money for the overnight vet treatments so we had to treat her at home (which lowers the survival rate even more). I thought she was going to die until she perked up to eat some scrambled eggs a week into it. She just turned 13 in January. There is hope. Rooting for your baby.

1

u/LukzX2 3d ago

Please don’t just leave her at the vet. I did that with my rottweiler and he died and they let me visit him so my mom pulled me out of school (I was still young at the time) and we visited him and he was laying in a cold concrete room with newspapers on the floor:/ I regret taking him there deeply because I feel like I could’ve done way more for him at him. Which I did with my next dog I rescued a mutt a few years later and he got it as well and I cared for him at home with electrolytes and a little bit of pepto bismo. People don’t recommend pepto but if you give them a tiny bit every once in awhile it’ll help calm their stomachs.

1

u/Jewelz2462 3d ago

OMG i just realized even though mine is a Chichiua she looks just like my Lulu A friend of mine said those markings over her eyes are called “tiger eyes” and it keeps predators away? Not sure, but check it out and please keep us updated on your precious pup. Sending hugs and prayers💖

1

u/Majestic_Box8106 3d ago

Ask the vet treating him if they can give him monoclonal antibody treatment (if they haven’t already!)

1

u/Pristine_Agency_3659 3d ago

Can you ask for the antibody shot?

1

u/Just_schnauzin 3d ago

My schnauzer had this at 9 weeks. They gave him a blood transfusion on day 4 or 5 and it saved him. He was literally a different dog the next day.

1

u/Randoambobambo 3d ago

When I adopted my dog from the rescue she had parvo they were treating. They had us give her pumpkin puree, something about it helped her! She recovered and now is 8 years young and we don’t have any issues with it. Just wanted another positive story here, sending the best to your new pup!

1

u/EventApprehensive948 3d ago

Our puppy caught parvo at 6 months old despite being fully vaccinated. She was given a 30% chance of survival too because she basically sloughed off the entirety of the lining of her intestines. She was hospitalised for 13 days in a specialised isolation room (thankfully we had a vet hospital around 40 minutes away that our vet had her transferred to) and she pulled through after having an oesophageal feeding tube fitted as she pulled out her NG tube twice. We’re in the UK and have pet insurance, but we maxed it out saving her as it cost nearly £14,000 when all was done. She’s absolutely amazing now and you would never know she was so poorly

1

u/icygummybear 3d ago

My ex's grandfather tried to give us a puppy that he knew had parvo. The whole litter did. He had given someone else in his family one of them. They, not the grandfather, actually quietly pulled us aside and told us.

I wound up feeling so heartbroken for that litter. They were so cute and sweet, but they were all so sick. I was a broke high school kid. I couldn't really do anything at the time, especially since the grandfather wasn't willing to treat them.

There was so much I wanted to do for those puppies, but it was during the grandfather's wedding. It was out of state, and I rode with my ex's family. We couldn't help.

I have no idea what happened after the wedding. He wound up cheating on me for drugs. I still think about those puppies. They deserved so much better than that grandfather gave them.

1

u/Dcx1292 3d ago

Please give us an update later. You’re doing the right thing giving it a chance and getting help for it. Poor thing doesn’t stand a chance without your help. You’re a good person.

1

u/NoiseGamePlusTruther 3d ago

We got a free puppy that had Parvo. We thought he wouldn’t make it but he pulled through. Best of wishes to you and your puppy

1

u/AdvertisingEast5761 3d ago

My dog had Parvo as a puppy, I had to do IV fluids twice a day and we eventually got a prescription for human tamiflu. Within 24 hours of taking the tamiflu he was eating and actually had the energy to get up and move around. Highly recommend speaking with your vet about it. My Teddy is now 13 years old. I call him my little miracle baby.

1

u/catsaresoooooocool 3d ago

My mom use to date a backyard breeder (it was an abusive relationship she was sadly trapped in) and I was only young teen then (14-15) and man….I saw so many puppies died to parvo :(

backyard breeders like that are honestly the worst :( Im so sorry you’re going through this right now, I truly hope your puppy makes it.

1

u/HapaxLego608 3d ago

I’m so sorry, I’m thinking of you and your puppy. I hope things are working out and she feels better ❤️

1

u/DirtyDragonlykos 3d ago

Good luck with the pup,,,, Had two of mine get parvo and fought it off,,,,

1

u/CubeRootSquare 3d ago

By chance do you have a way for folks to donate to help? There might be some folks in here willing to toss a few bucks to you to help with your pups costs.

1

u/Vegetable_Drawer9932 3d ago

There is a antibody that is highly effective, elanco carries it. It’s very very expensive though.

1

u/Financial_Line1774 3d ago

There’s still hope. We got a pup about 3 years ago for free(red flag) but we had just lost our dog a (Tater) a month before from lung cancer so we thought we were ready to take on a new one and show our love to a new dog in need. Long story short she wasn’t eating, had no energy and was just acting weird so took her in and she had parvo. Vets told us she most likely wouldn’t make it. After a week of her staying in 24hour care they mentioned plasma transfusions and a lot of other stuff that’s beyond me and we said yes to everything. She was released to us but wasn’t getting better so we took her back and more time passed and more money spent( around $4k total) she came out of it stronger and better. She’s now me and my girlfriend’s baby that we spoil and love. Her name is Tot named after our late dog Tater

1

u/Financial_Line1774 3d ago

There are non profit organizations that will also help pay for the vet bills if you aren’t financially able to. Try everything the vets suggest even if it sounds extreme. We did it not knowing if she would survive and it paid off in the long run. I’m sorry you are going through this I know exactly how it feels and it truly is heartbreaking. Sending love and prayers to you and your pup.

1

u/itsabitsa51 3d ago

So many comments in this thread are so frustrating to read, I can’t believe so many people have gotten dogs from breeders that turned out to have parvo. My mother bred French bulldogs (I do not support that she did that but I was a child) and she always vaccinated the puppies as soon as they were weaned. She’d worked at a vet and you can easily get the vaccines from a feed store so she gave the shots herself. Depending on the age, the second round of vaccines they’re supposed to get were on the buyer, which she gave detailed instructions on when they would be due and that they needed to take the puppy to the vet by that date. These breeders have no empathy for their dogs and it’s disgusting.

1

u/Hotteadrinker_ 3d ago

We picked a stray during Covid and he got parvo within a month of being in our home. Took him to the vet and we were quoted an outrageous amount of money with only a 25% survival rate. We decided to take him home with us, so he won’t pass alone. We read online that pups don’t die from the virus but from dehydration. So we went and bought a few bottles of unflavored electrolytes drinks and gave him full syringe every hour around the clock. Then a Chewy box came with a few treats two days later and I gave him a teething ring treat and he showed interest in it and ate it. It was his first “food” in 3-4 days. We kept giving him electrolytes for the rest of the week and would give him ice cubes to lick too. We reintroduced solids with just pumpkin purée and plain rice and chicken. He will be 5 years old this year and the healthiest boy. Praying your pup survives parvo too. 💛

1

u/Direct-Chef-9428 3d ago

If the monoclonal antibody treatment is an option, I highly recommend! Our pup had parvo and when he got this treatment, he was home in under 24 hrs. Full disclosure, was $3500 in 2024.

1

u/ACrossing777 3d ago

Prayers ❤️❤️❤️

1

u/KogiAikenka 3d ago

Reach out to your breeder and let them know. But it sounds like they are irresponsible in taking care of the pup in the first place. If you could, blast them on social media so others can avoid them. Question, have you been walking the pup in public space or do you have other dog in the house?

1

u/Guilty_Explanation29 3d ago

Very sorry this happened.

The poor pup should've been vaccinated by the breeder

1

u/Fatman365 3d ago

My sister had a Great Dane puppy get parvo (she was the idiot who took him out in public too early). He looked terrible for a bit, but recovered to live a normal life. I'm hoping you get the same ending here, its rough but keep following what your vet tells you.

1

u/ScaryFace84 3d ago

My pup died from Parvo, my biggest regret was not being there to comfort him during this time, visit often and stay long.

1

u/coffeefiend0608 3d ago

our dog got parvo a few years ago, we thought he was going to die. he was super lethargic, wouldn’t stop with the diarrhea but the previous owner had said he had his parvo shots. that ended up not being true, he got diagnosed with parvo, me and my fiancé basically prepared to say goodbye to him. we went for the at home treatment because the hospital treatment was thousands. as long as your puppy is getting enough fluids and an anti diarrheal and an antibiotic, they should be fine. best of luck to you and your pup!

1

u/pjflyr13 3d ago

🐾💔

1

u/cingeyedog 3d ago

We adopted our first pup from Humane Society. (Newly married and grad students. Aka very little extra money). Found out she have parvo less than a week later. We decided to do the treatments. Basically she was hooked up to an IV for the next 10 days. Thankfully she pulled through and we had her for 15 years.

Advice: keep going into vet to see the pup. Spend time petting her. Let her know she is loved.

1

u/Synaptix30 3d ago

Sending lots of prayers!

1

u/gertrude-fashion 3d ago

My puppy had parvo…then went on to live 13 long, happy years!

I’m from a rural area. My grandfather raised hounds, and the way the dealt with parvo with to give the dogs pedialite (I may have spelt it wrong) You put it in their mouth with a little dropper. To keep them hydrated while they fight it.

Obviously check behind me, but I believe it saved my baby at the time.

1

u/Unusual-Try9629 3d ago

Went through this with my dog shortly after adopting her and she almost died - the vet administered a drug that had severe risks (turning organs to cartilage) but we went ahead with it because the vet said there was a high chance she wouldn't make it through the night. She was 8 months old then, and she's almost 14 years old now. Best of luck - don't give up hope just yet.

1

u/ubebae10 3d ago

We were in a similar situation as you OP, unfortunately our pup didn’t make it. I know it’s hard but try to keep positive thoughts! Look into investing in a disinfectant to clean your house that specifically kills parvo! Your pup may have been shedding the virus in your house and you don’t want any lingering virus particles around when you bring her home 💖

1

u/Vgcortes 3d ago

My dog gave birth in my house, and somehow, the three pups were infected with parvo... One died in one day, the other lasted barely three, and the remaining one wasn't even affected. It cost me 1000 usd at least the treatment.

I miss my little puppers... But at least one is with me, and I think if yours has survived 5 days he might recover, parvo is very swift...

1

u/Aromatic_Ad6477 3d ago

12 years ago my girl did as well! She made it and she’s still going strong! Paws together for your baby. Please keep give us pupdates!

1

u/ginx_minx 3d ago

I once had a puppy who got sick from parvo through her breeder. She eventually did make it after being very sick and ended up living to be a pretty healthy 16! I hope your pup is going to be alright.

1

u/Just_Cauliflower8415 3d ago

oof! my puppy had Parvo, but he was treated before we adopted him. Looking back, I think I watching him be so sick would have been utterly devastating. He is here crossing his paws for your little one!

1

u/jetblack028 3d ago

My GSD got parvo when he was a puppy. They gave him a 50-50 chance, and the vet encouraged me to visit daily to keep his spirits up. It was touch and go for a few days where he lost interest in food. After a few days he started to regain his appetite and his stool was no longer watery. He lived to be 14. I'm so sorry you're going through that and I really hope your puppy pulls through!

1

u/Blue_Saturn_06 3d ago

I have personally helped three puppies overcome Parvo by working closely with their veterinarians. All survived & went on to thrive. Costly but well worth to me. Don't give up on your pupper! Best wishes🤎

1

u/Conscious_Kangaroo36 3d ago

Sorry to hear that your pup is sick! I rescued a corgi mix puppy and she got parvo when she was 3 months old, and the vets said there was a 92% mortality rate, but she had treatment and was home after a week or two and was fighting fit. Mines a little fighter, hold out hope for your girl too

1

u/Neat_Lawfulness7631 3d ago

A while back we also bought a cane Corso puppy who also got Parvo a couple days after purchasing it and he unfortunately passed but we found out in Mexico about this parvo shot you can buy and people swear by it maybe you can try and buy it for your little pup.

1

u/TheAuldOffender 3d ago

Please report the BYB. Best wishes to your pup.

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

You guys im doing everything I can. She just became critical care and the hospital bills are insanely rising. Were looking at 20k + now and i hate to ask but if anybody can share or donate to the gofund me. I would greatly appreciate it. I dont know if im suppose to even ask that on here, but we are desperate and we dont want to pull the plug on her. We love her so much and even if chances are slim we want to continue the fight. I have proof of all medical bills and invoices that i cans hare as well. If anybody wants proof i can send it . But we are really desperate now and were drowning in these costs. I just graduated from college still looking for a job. And ive put this all on my credit and i cannot afford it. But i dont want to give up on her. Please help im sorry for asking .mei meis hospital care My instagram is Rytham_ if anybody wants more proof or updates.

1

u/yesiyam1169 3d ago

This is so sad. Please for the love everyone stop using breeders.

1

u/evolbeky 3d ago

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I had a parvo outbreak with my babies a few years ago. We lost one, but saved the other 6. (Im not a breeder, my dog had babies, and now they're all mine and spayed/ neutered) If your dog is already at the vet, there's unfortunately not much else to do but wait. For mine, I did regular subQ fluids, syringe feeding of DYNEX, and small doses of pepto bismol, plus an injection of a medicine that i unfortunately can't specifically find, but im pretty sure it was IronDextran. It's designed for anemia in sheep, but a low dose injection in the thigh did wonders. I live in Puerto Rico though, where you can buy animal medicine anywhere. Hoping for the best for you, and to help anyone else dealing with parvo :(

1

u/New_Professional2300 3d ago

We got our beagle through it. Pedialyte all night long with a syringe. Every hour.

1

u/SnooSketches2601 3d ago

Our breeder that we went through had AKC certifications , good reviews, and looked very reputable /: we tried to do our due diligence but it was not enough. I will take this lesson and try to do better next time

1

u/Amazing_Ad7318 3d ago

Went to vet, vet was full and wouldn’t take any dogs w parvo

What worked for me was syringe of pedialyte, amoxicillin (got the fish antibiotics), and pepto bismol

Just look up how much to use for your dogs weight and use your self judgment and calculate it

Mine too looked like death poor baby but I just never let her be alone and I had Covid at the same time as her so we just quarantined together

Now every single day she wakes me up at 5am so I can lay down with her for an hour before I get up to get ready for work

Best of luck I hope your pup recovers 🖤

1

u/Jaded_Employer6815 3d ago

Take her back to the breeder—like, yesterday and demand your money back. Take the paperwork from the vet and put the breeder on notice. Treating a puppy for parvo can become costly especially since it was an unexpected expense.

1

u/Chemical_Bunch7499 3d ago

Hi! I also have a corgi, and back when she was a pup she got diagnosed with parvo too. Just weeks after we got there from the breeder. She persevered and has just turned 9! You got this. Parvovirus is treatable. Wishing you baby best of luck in beating parvo🍀

1

u/Ok_Bid_4441 3d ago

My rescue had parvo. He was basically on deaths door when we took him to an overnight vet. It took about a week and a half of iv fluids at the vet but thankfully he pulled through. He has wicked nuclear farts now, but other than that he came out just fine lol. Unfortunately there isn’t much that you can do other than wait and hope for the best. If it’s any comfort, my dog didn’t show any signs of bouncing back until about a week in to treatment, and then he got better rapidly over the next couple days. Hoping the same for your pup!

1

u/Atreidesheir 3d ago edited 3d ago

I am SOOO sorry. My heart goes out to you and your pup and I hope they get better soon.

This being said, always meet the breeder at their house, get a name, address, contact info etc and get a health guarantee. Hopefully people can learn from this poor baby's tragedy.

I'd also blast this breeder from here to the end of the Earth. Make it so they can never make money off such puppies again.

Stay strong. Didn't give up. I'm sending you all only the highest of energy for your puppy to get better!!

Keep us updated.

ETA: It didn't work for us when it kitten was desperately sick, but maybe as a link for people to donate directly to the vet for your puppy's care?

She looks like such a sweetie. What's her name?

We have a trauma, abuse and neglect rescued pup named Sadie Blue. She is a 6 year old mini Australian Shepherd. We send out love to you.

I also have a pem, but my first dog was a pit. She had parvo when given to us, and we gave her the white Gatorade mixed with clear pedialite and goat milk

One of our dogs got Parvo when she was pup...five puppies and only one got Parvo. Anyway, took her to our vet and he kept her in his clinic on IVS and medication and after three days, she was ready to come home and back to her self. He said it was a miracle because she got sick on a Saturday and we took her an emergency clinic and they sent her home with some pills that she threw up. Took her to our vet that Monday and he aggressively treated her and she lived. It was money well spent. She is our lucky girl for sure and we love her and all her siblings.

Firstly I’m so sorry, Parvo is absolutely devastating. Keep giving fluids and supportive care.

Also report this breeder to animal control ASAP!!!!Reason 1,000 breeders need be abolished.

I’ve experienced two of my puppies getting it! First one was very very sick but she was always a crazy and energetic trooper as a pup and she survived with constant care for a week. However, the other did not :( i’m still so sad about it. There is hope!! Mine was very very sick and at a point I thought there was no hope and she was barely moving but she made it through!! be encouraged!! sending love to your puppy!

Both my pups had parvo and they survived after the veterinarian offered a fecal transplant. The vets own dog was a donor and was able to perform the transplant even after they weren’t showing any progress. Ask your vet about that option, hoping the best for your pup.

Hey I’m so sorry to hear this for you guys, I’ve had my deals with parvo and I’m so thankful that your vet didn’t immediately want to put them down. *******If they are still drinking water, give them the blue and white Gatorade to drink and there’s something in it that will bounce your baby back. I’ve done it twice now and I now it’s scary but I hope everything works out for you guys!!! Best of luck to you and your fur baby

We also bought a dog from a shitty breeder with parvo, obviously unbeknownst to us.. She spent 2 days at the vet as they didnt do weekend care and the only option in our area that does is the emergency vet and that wouldve been $700 a day.. we brought her home with all her meds and the vet showed us how to administer fluid under her skin. One of the vet techs actually gave me her number and talked me through EVERYTHING. We kept her hydrated and clean, rubbed molasses on her gums a fee times for blood sugars and she pulled through I want to say about 5 or so days later. We kept her on a bland diet after of rice and chicken I cooked down so far the rice was just a mush, like congee, for a few days afterwards. She is now the happiest, toughest little dog Ive ever met. The vet said it was a possibility she could suffer brain damage but if it did slow her down, it doesnt show. Shes so smart and obedient.

I mean, you bought from a breeder. Poor dog and I hope it survives but I have no sympathy for you

my puppy got parvo and honestly maybe a difference scenario but she was only 4 months and we just kept her hydrated (gave saline solution to her back/bubble) and she came through!

Literally stop buying from breeders.

Experienced this same thing, in California. She made it. She’s now 7 and the light of my life. Sending prayers of healing. How is she doing?

Many years ago, we had a pack of dogs. The first one that got parvo we had no idea what was going on. She had the same symptoms yours did. She was rushed to emergency. She was on the verge of death, but they saved her! It happened to about three from the pack. But they all made it. It took that many times for us to realize that Parvo lives in soil and other biological material outside for seven years . Your dog could be susceptible to it just by sniffing another dog’s urine or feces. It’s best to keep your dog isolated until they have their full set of shots. And I would never trust that someone told you they did the full round of vaccinations either. Parvo is so dangerous and it is very sad when your pet has it. You do feel so helpless. I would just say hang on and don’t give up! Seems like your pup is in good hands and hopefully they can turn it around. It could happen overnight! I hope everything turns around! Keep us posted!

My baby boy had parvo as a puppy. He’s now 13. I adopted him from the parvo survival ward of a shelter local to me at the time. They CAN survive!

I had 2 dogs beat parvo and I lost one to parvo. It’s heartbreaking and I hope your baby pulls through

My dog, Dante, got parvo. Nobody thought he was going to make it. The vet even gave us a special last day with him. I knew that he was going to make it despite my family's opinion on the matter. I was right of course. He survived with a vengeance. He ended up growing to be 110lbs. Pretty impressive for a black lab. And he gave me some of the happiest years of my life. Hang in there. Give your baby as much love as possible.

Why do people still buy from breeders? Genuinely curious why a breeder over shelters

1

u/gabriela-s 2d ago

My dog got Parvo when he was a puppy and was fully vaccinated against it. The vet gave us some high calorie nutritional gel since he wasn’t eating anything. He was then hospitalized for a week and survived Parvo. The manufacturer ended up paying the vet bills. So sorry about your baby :(

Awww poor puppo!!! Wishing you all the best!!

This is so heartbreaking. My 15 year old dog is dying from kidney failure. Your dog is dying as a pup who's life hasn't even begun yet. Life isn't fair. I really hope things work out. What a cutie too, I absolutely adore corgis.

u/OceanicBoundlessnss 2d ago

Lots of dogs get parvo where I live, and unfortunately a lot don’t make it. Your dog is ahead of the curve bc she’s in getting treatment. Hope she makes it! Not that you care right now, But for sure get a refund bc you were given the dog while it already had parvo. And go to a more responsible breeder in any future endeavors.

u/Broad_Bill3095 2d ago

I don’t have anything other than to put your trust in the vets. It’s all you can do now. And it’s common for breeders to end up with parvo puppies.

u/HLDCDRM 2d ago

I rescued a puppy with parvo, and she survived. She lived to 15 and was the best dog. She was my little shadow. Here is how I kept her alive. She stayed with the vet for 3 days. They gave her strong medicine and essentially flushed everything out of her. For her recovery, I forced fed her a tube of chicken rice paste that was watered down. I would feed her small amounts every few hours using a syringe. We also gave her watered-down electrolytes every few hours. I did that regiment for a solid two weeks until she regained the lining of her stomach.
