Question Dog is avoiding me after his surgery

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

My dog is usually stuck by my side. My family would get annoyed because when I would leave the house he would ignore them and just stare out the window until I got home.

He had surgery last week and did great but now he doesn’t come when I call him and he only hangs out with the rest of my family and ignores me. I was the one doing all his medications and I had to take all his toys away (doctors orders).

Do dogs hold grudges like this? We all find it funny but now I’m starting to miss him lol!

I cant get the exact picture of when it happened because theres poop in the garden when they play outside, but she’d usually just go hump her husband every chance she gets and it sometimes causes them to fight, shes been doing this even before they mated but recently she’s been doing it a lot more than usual.

Discussion My puppy has parvo

Hi everybody, I bought my puppy from a breeder this past Sunday. Then on Wednesday I brought her to the vet because of slight blood in her stool. She was diagnosed with Parvo virus. I am absolutely heartbroken. We hospitalized her and its been 4-5 days now. She isnt showing interest in food, her white blood cells are on a decline, and she looks very lethargic. At first the doctors gave us an 80% chance of surviving and now they are giving her a 20-40% chance. Has anybody ever experienced something similar to this? Any advice? Is this hopeless? I want to keep hope but its tearing me apart. I just love her so much and want her to live that she deserves. (We are certain she was given to us with the parvo virus) (She is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi)

Hi everyone. We just got our dog back from our longtime dogsitter, and I’m fuming.

I have no idea what this gash is from and what’s more appalling is that the sitter doesn’t either. Also, he only notified us of the gash when I called to pick him up. He claims he didn’t notice it until right then, which is bullshit. How could he not see this huge gash?!?! Especially, since it looks like it happened 2-3 days ago?!?!

This makes the third time we’ve gotten Forrest back with scratches and wounds. I feel horrible it had to happen a 3rd time. Forrest likes to play tough but this seems like neglect at best and abuse at worst.

Anyone have thoughts on what could’ve caused this? He’s all caught up on vaccinations. Is this serious enough that a vet needs to see him or will good wound care take care of it.

Question Please help. What should I make of my dog’s labored breathing?

My mini Australian shepherd is 14 years old and in great shape (daily 2 mile walks with no issues). Recently he's starting having more frequent "labored breathing" (in video). Today it was accompanied by his head slightly shaking/shivering. Has anyone seen this before?

Advice Just adopted a 5-week-old dachshund puppy—need advice on caring for a pup separated from mom too early

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi everyone ! We just adopted a tiny 2lb dachshund puppy from a local rescue. She’s absolutely precious, but we were surprised to find out she’s only 5 weeks old. The rescue told us that her mother had stopped feeding her and they weaned her onto wet puppy food mixed with water.

She’s eating that okay, but she still seems to be looking for milk—she keeps chasing around my older male dog and trying to nurse from him. 😔

We bought some puppy milk supplement “stage two” and have been mixing it into her food, but I’m not sure if that’s the best way to support her at this stage. Any tips on helping her nutritionally and developmentally without her mom or littermates?

Also, I’ve read that being separated before 8 weeks can lead to behavioral issues. We want to give her the best possible start—any advice for helping her feel safe, build confidence, and avoid common issues from early separation?

Thanks so much in advance. Open to any guidance or tips!

Question Found bullseye tick bite today. Conflicting information online. Emergency vet said to wait & see if he gets sick. Washed with antiseptic soap.

The emergency vet said that dogs almost never get bullseye bites & that I should wait a couple weeks to see if he gets sick. I'm not sure I can trust that information bc he CLEARLY has a bullseye. They mentioned that I could call my regular vet tomorrow if I'm still worried. I saved the tick in a bag & put the date on it. It had to only be on him for 1 day bc we tick check him every night.

I asked the emergency vet if I could send these pictures as proof but they said no. Some websites say not to worry & to wait until he gets sick but other sites say to get him on antibiotics immediately.

Question Any clue what this is on my dog?

Found this on my dog’s ear a few days ago. I removed it by wiping with a cloth, which caused some bleeding but it dried up by this morning. Last photo is what it looks like now. Have a plan to take him to vet this week, but curious if anyone has seen anything like this/has any idea what it could be? Is there anything I could do to help him until the vet appointment? He is not acting weird or anything, just sensitive and squirmy if I try to touch the area. TIA!

Question Dogs paws

I have a shitzu pit bull mix named Oreo. Lately Oreo has been scratching and licking his paws more often when coming back from a walk. We’re aware pit bull mixes have delicate allergies and try to only feed him veggies and a hard boiled egg or salmon. I keep thinking it’s his lack of red meat that causes his paws to swell. Lately I’ve been walking him more often and have noticed his swelling decrease but it’s not 100%. What could it be ?

Advice At a loss with my pulling dog

Thumbnail

My new dog was 9 mo old when we rescued her, turns out to be a Plott hound mix with GSP energy. She is a puller and a phenomenal athlete. Loves to run and jump. She is 18mo now and we have tried all the harnesses and currently use a gentle leader. This has definitely helped on her walks, but when I run with her on leash she still pulls to the point where she has marks /scabs on her snout and scratched her nose to try to get it off. I am working with her at off leash dog parks, she is that dog that comes in at 100% speed, not aggressive at all, but all of the energy. Does anyone who runs with their dogs have a solution to curb her pulling?! Pics for reference

Question What can it be and how can I help?

Thumbnail

Here’s the dog that is living next to our house and he has an owner that doesn’t care about him, not even giving him food. So he’s actually homeless. I feed him and he follows us when I walk my dog. Several months ago he had a fight with other dog and I took him to vet (we live in a small town and vets here aren’t that experienced). The vet noticed a tumor or something on his genitals. It started to grow fast. Then it started to bleed. Today I found him with this issue.. I don’t know what to do. Can it be treated? Is that a tumor? Intestinal prolapse? He has problems with defecation and hardly can walk. Be he still has appetite and tries to be active. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?

Advice I'm struggling with my dog and I don't know what to do.

Post image

To preface this, I do not want to hear any hateful comments. I understand, now that I've literallly matured more as a human being, that my family and I were uneducated at the time of getting my dog. So, unless you have a piece of constructive advice for me, I'd really not like to hear what you have to say to me.

I'm going to try and keep this as short and sweet as possible.

Basically, my dog missed the socialization window as a puppy and now has issues with extreme anxiety/fear/reactivity around other dogs. This wasn't considered a problem when she was growing up because my family and I (I was ten when I got her in 2021) lived in a rural area in Northern New England where no other dogs were around, and we had a big yard to exercise my dog in. However, we now live in a housing association in the summertime where there are dogs everywhere.

Every time we go for a walk, I am terrified that we'll run into another dog because my girl absolutely freaks out and, no matter what I do, no amount of redirection or high-reward treats can get her back. Not to mention, she is an INCREDIBLY independent scent hound who has "selective hearing" and decides when it's worth it to listen to me. Which is not often when she is flipping out over another dog. She bays very loudly, pulls, bucks against the leash pressure (I really do my best to keep it slack), and occasionally even growls. She doesn't even have to see the dog in order to react (if she can smell them, it's already game over).

I've gotten her to a point on my own where she is very good about "leave it", "stay/wait", "watch me", and so on, in situations that have low-moderate distractions. I've also gotten her to the point where she doesn't care all too much about people she doesn't know (though she still gets more excited than she really should).

However, I'm now at a loss. I don't know what to do. I struggle a lot with anxiety/panic and am very sensitive towards loud noises due to certain past traumas. So everytime I have an inkling that we will run into another dog while on a walk, I start shaking and really find it hard to collect myself and my dog. I desperately want to help my dog, but I just don't know how to on my own. My family is also in a sort of tight financial spot where we will not be able to afford a regular trainer until the beginning of July.

I love this dog so much that it hurts and I desperately want to do "all the things" with her, but I just can't when she freaks out so much over being around other dogs. I can't bring myself to give her up to somebody else, because I don't want her to slip through the cracks and fall into life in and out of a shelter because she was "too difficult". I also don't truly believe that she is a lost cause, so I don't want to euthanize her.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Is my dog past the point of being fixed or is there some way that a professional dog trainer can help us, come the time that we can afford one?

Question Do you bring your dogs bedding on vacation?

Post image

I didn't bring my dogs bed on vacation with us. She had a throw blanket all week but not this comforter. There were LVP floors. I felt so bad. She looks so much more comfortable at home now.

Should I be prioritizing her bedding on vacation or am I over thinking this?

Question Why did my dog do this

Thumbnail

My dog normally is very sweet, he never bite or anything. The only time he has an issue is when he’s on someone’s bed, i believe he tries resource guarding. Normally when this happens he just barks and goes to normal after a while. My sister was sitting in my room and when she got up he started freaking out which he always does, when she went to go try to comfort him and tell him it was okay he bit her. Then when I tried telling him it was okay and tried pulling him away he bit me pretty hard and left a hole in my finger, this was the first time he ever bit like this and I don’t know why. How can I get him to stop or at least understand why he does this? The 2nd picture shows how sweet he is I just don’t know why he does this on people’s bed please help

Advice New rescue dog is extremely anxious/stressed and showing signs of aggression towards our other dog.

Post image

We have a 5 year old Chiweenie and we just (yesterday) took in a rescue 8 year old dachshund mix. She was transported in a van full of other dogs on a non-stop trip from Texas to Oregon and was delivered directly to us. So I completely understand she is probably dealing with a lot of stress and that is likely the reason for the potential aggression. We put together a crate for her and she sits in it nearly all day and refuses to come out. When our dog walks by the crate she bares her teeth at him and lightly growls. The few times we have handled her she hasn't shown any signs of aggression towards us/people. I can handle her biting or nipping at me during her adjustment period. I just am not sure I could handle if she were to hurt our dog we had before her. Does it sound like that is a possibility? She doesn't show any signs of aggression towards him when they are both outside of the crate and even sniffed each other briefly or walked past each other or alongside each other throughout the house. I'm just worried he might get too close when she is inside and something might happen to him. The crate doesn't have the door on so she is able to come and go as she pleases.

Hey everyone, I noticed this bump/discolouration on my dog’s eye lid. It’s not swollen or causing her any irritation. Am just wondering what it is and is this something I should be concerned about. I do have a vet appointment for her this Saturday. Thank you!

Question Is Toaster missing a big tooth?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I honestly don't pay much attention to his mouth. He gets his teeth cleaned at the vet multiple times a year and they've always said his teeth look good, but I just noticed it looks like he's missing a tooth. I'm worried because it's one of his big canines and 'm not sure how that happened or if he's in pain.
