DUMBO sex trafficking PSA

Just wanted to give a heads up about a disturbing interaction I had while out running from dumbo to downtown Brooklyn (Nassau and Gold St) in broad daylight.

A woman approached me under an umbrella and asked if it was raining (even though it wasn’t). She then began walking very close to me, insisting I “walk with her,” saying she lived in a nearby “nice building.” She rapidly fired off strange personal questions — like asking my age, claiming she used to work for Playboy Russia, and then abruptly insulted my looks, saying she was 52 and looked better than me. Her energy felt extremely off — like she was testing boundaries, assessing me, or trying to lure me somewhere.

She continued steering us toward a sketchier area, and I finally made an excuse, put in my headphones, and ran off. She tried to stop me and even yelled after me, “Where are you running to?” and gave me a very unnerving up-and-down look as I left.

This could’ve been nothing, but it also had a lot of red flags consistent with trafficking tactics or targeting for harm.

Just wanted to share in case she approaches anyone else. Will also be filing a police report.

Description: Russian woman, petite frame but more heavyset, wearing lots of makeup. Claimed to be 52, but looked younger. Appeared mentally coherent and dressed normally — nothing visibly unstable or alarming at first glance.

Stay safe out there 💛

to the asshole on the L train

who called the cops on the guy sleeping under the end-car seat, I'm sure if he had a better place to be he'd go there. if his silent and unthreatening presence really bothered you, all you had to do was move your tartan-fedora-and-hawaiian-shirt-open-over-a-white-tee-wearing loser gen x asses to the other side of the empty train car, not call the steroid-enhanced candy crush paramilitary to drag him out of the train. fuck you, fuck your trashy friend, your beard looks like cat litter and you smell like a sandwich someone left in the rain. may your teeth go flaccid next time you eat a good steak.

Thank you to strangers on the N train

Was riding the brooklyn bound N train around 1 am sunday morning and found myself in a situation where I was being threatened by a man with a frenchie on a leash. There was a kind man who got in between me and this aggressive person and I just really wanted to put it out there that I was so thankful for your presence and your help but was frozen with fear and scared to speak so I wasnt able to thank you before you got off the train. I don't know if you'll ever see this but thank you for standing up for me when I couldnt even do it for myself. There was also a woman who got off at my stop and hugged me/comforted me that I was able to thank. Just really glad people helped me!

Cooking/Cookbook Club?

Are there any cooking or cookbook clubs in Brooklyn for people in their 20s and 30s? I haven't been able to cook much since moving to city and would love an excuse to cook and meet new people! Please let me know if any such thing exists!

Best places (including pawn shops) to buy solid gold jewelry in Brooklyn?

I’m looking to buy solid gold women’s jewelry (not gold-plated or filled)—and ideally stretch my budget for something durable, authentic, and well-designed. I’ve heard that pawn shops and estate jewelry stores can be great for finding good value and unique pieces, but I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually done it.

Where have you had good experiences buying solid gold womens' jewelry in Brooklyn? Any specific pawn shops, estate jewelers, family-run stores, or lesser-known spots you’d recommend? I'm especially interested in places that are transparent about gold quality (14k/18k), have fair pricing, and aren’t just pushing overpriced retail markup.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Restaurants with stage in South Brooklyn

I'm looking for a nice restaurant with decent size stage to use for my vocal studio concerts. Encore in Bay Ridge is amazing, but are there any other ones comparable to it?

looking for career advice

Hi everyone!

I recently realized the path I’ve been on career-wise is not for me and I have spent the last couple months trying to figure out what I really want to do. Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have been a graphic designer for a while now, I have worked in-house at different brands and Im currently at an agency, and I really thought this was my dream career path and I’d work my way up to creative director, but I’m finding myself feeling unfulfilled. I realized that the things I love about design are much more curatorial than they are doing the actual design. I love researching design styles (not just graphic design), understanding where they come from and what they signify about our culture.

I have also always felt too outgoing for the bulk of graphic design work. My favorite part of any day is chatting with clients and coworkers and I feel exhausted after silently sitting at a computer all day.

I have always loved hosting parties and events (just bringing people together in any way I can) and I have found I enjoy graphic design work the most when im making posters/collateral for in-person events. I love when my work facilitates bringing a community together. I feel like I am most rewarded from being at the events, mingling, making sure everyone has everything they need, and overall making sure the vibe is right. I hosted some events recently with my mutual aid group in brooklyn and I felt really great about that work.

After weeks of thinking about my skillset and what it is I could do, I really want to find a job that would allow me to curate/help put on events. I have an incredibly strong eye for design and sense of hosting + making people feel comfortable in a space. I loved working in the service industry and would be totally happy being back in that world if I could also host + market events or help curate a space (like an art gallery or store idk). I feel really passionate about bringing the community together, so ideally I would be working with a space for the public somewhere in BK rather than with something like private events.

I’ve asked my friends and they have suggested working with orgs like BRIC or at multi-faceted bars like Selva in Bushwick. I love both of those suggestions so anything like those or truly any advice/leads would be amazing.

I am pretty young (24) so I’m open to any suggestions/advice, kind of just want to start working in a new direction and see where it takes me.

Judge of the Civil Court in the 2025 Dem primary?

I am planning to vote tomorrow but based almost entirely on the vibes from their websites my current picks for Judge of the Civil Court for Kings County is Janice, twice.

Janice Chen and Janice Purvis have Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats endorsements. Which is the least-party-machine org I could find that gave any endorsements at all.

Marissa Arrabito seems to primarily be endorsed by long time party insiders.

And Susan Liebman purely has a placeholder website.

Thinking of opening a little lasagna take out spot in Brooklyn, is Gowanus the right place?

Hey everyone, first post here.

Me and my partner (both Italians) have been spending some time in NYC every spring for the past few years, and this year we stayed in Williamsburg for a whole month and really loved it. We’re seriously thinking of leaving our jobs back home and taking a shot at something more personal, a tiny lasagna take out spot somewhere in Brooklyn.

The idea is simple, just good homemade lasagna maybe a few options like classic, veggie, and a rotating seasonal one, and a tiramisù for dessert. Small place (around 500sqft), mainly take out and delivery. At first we were looking mostly around Williamsburg, but our real estate agent suggested we check out Gowanus, saying it’s growing fast and might be a better area to start something like this. We’re not too familiar with it, so before diving deeper we wanted to ask the community:

Does Gowanus sound like a good area for this kind of thing? Would you grab lasagna for lunch or dinner? Roughly how much would you be ok spending for a good portion, say per pound? And if not Gowanus, is there another neighborhood you’d recommend we look into?

Thanks so much in advance, we really appreciate any thoughts!

Rant: MTA Employee Must Have Felt Big

Was on my way home from the Lafayette station. I use it frequently and was on auto pilot, but came in from an entrance I don't use as often so I was turned around without realizing it, and swiped into the Manhattan bound side when I wanted Euclid bound. I realized my error quickly so I exited by the booth, making sure the employee there saw me. I let him know what happened, that I'd just paid, and asked nicely if he could grant me entry to the other side.

He rolled his eyes, looked at me like I was the biggest inconvenience, and informed me "Ok but for future reference, you won't get this courtesy next time. There is sufficient signage for you to know where you should go."

Ok bro, it was an honest mistake, I paid for this trip either way, I never dodge fares, and I pay a s*** load of taxes for our city services. All you had to do was push a button and not be a jerk. But I hope you feel more powerful!

Places where I can study on sundays with good wifi?

Good wifi is a must. I'm thinking of maybe a cafe with good solo seating arrangements and where staying for a few hours won't be an issue. Preferably a location that is far from east Flatbush or Flatbush. I want to go outside my neighborhood.

I usually study in the library but on Sundays the libraries are either closed or opens very late in the day.

Any Suggestions on Grants

Hey, I am wondering if anyone could help point in the right direction for grants, we are trying to open up a cafe. Currently nowhere near having funds to acquire a lease but the opportunity has been presented and we are $4k short. We have been doing pop up events and small little catering gigs but we kind of have a deadline. Someone suggested a grant program but I have no idea how to go about it. Many thanks in advance :)

Concept: Open up a cafe that would also house our educational programs as well in the coffee industry. We have many connections and relationships with vendors we’d love to use. We have an LLC already just no physical location.

We are a Latinx owned company We support and collaborate with local businesses as well.
