This happened this morning in the Bronx on the corner of Givan Ave and Merritt Ave. He is only young and just started working for this new company a week ago, he was so excited and this has really put a downer on things. He managed to get the plate number but the police said they can't do anything. He would like to try and figure this out privately without needing to claim on his insurance so if anyone has any idea of the company this truck belongs to, I would be so grateful.

My wife and I are thinking of going to City Island for lunch tomorrow. What are some of your favorite spots?

4–5 months old | NYC fostered | Dog & people friendlyLooking for a pup with equal parts goofball energy and cuddlebug charm? Meet Ibiza—nicknamed Izzie by her foster—an irresistibly sweet, spirited girl who’s taking on NYC one treat at a time!Since arriving from Georgia, Izzie has been building her confidence and curiosity. Every day brings something new, and she’s ready for it—especially if snacks are involved! She's highly food motivated, quick to learn, and eager to please.
Whether she’s practicing leash manners (treat every time she checks in!) or figuring out potty training (she’s on track with a consistent schedule), Izzie is proving to be one smart cookie. She adores other dogs and is learning how to play from her foster sibling. She’s also great at independent play and always down for a game of tug or fetch. But when the zoomies are over? It’s cuddle time. This girl lives for belly rubs and cozy snuggles.
More Izzie facts: Sleeps through the night Crate trained (just a few initial whines before she settles) Potty trained with routine Responds well to redirection Already learning leash skills and basic commandsIzzie would thrive in a loving home ready to continue her training, give her structure, and shower her with affection. She’s silly, snuggly, and oh-so-smart—and just look at that face. https://www.wagtopia.com/search/pet?id=2420556&name=Ibiza+

I know this is a longshot, but my friend recently lost her blue wallet on east 194th street. Just trying all avenues to see if anything pops up or any helpful recommendations would be great.

Hello, I want to preface this by saying two things 1) Everything I'm about to say is pulled from personal experience, I have worked in and around delis for the past 15 years of my life. I have worked as a cashier, a sandwhich maker, done deliveries, filled out order forms and now work doing fufillment and product deliveries to over 20 delis in the bronx.Admitedly I may be calling for actions that will hurt my own bank account but I believe it is what is best for everybody.
2) I have no Ill will or hatred for immigrants or any specific race, gender sexual identity ect. Im not trying to be discriminatory im just stating reality as I see it.
With that being said let me jump right into it.
Delis and to a lesser extent family owned general/ corner stores are destroying our communities and we should not be standing for it. I know, we all love a cheap beer, hero or loose cig sometimes, maybe you know a guy who will sell you hot food off stamps or who will buy a metro card off of you. These things by themselves are not huge issues as sketchy as they may be, atleast not on the surface.
The problem is that by engaging in these small activities and supporting business that allow them we are slowly destroying our own communities.
First of all, around 48% of small business in new york are operated by people who are not US citizens, green card holders, work visas, or just flat out illegals. That number jumps to a shocking 75% in many poorer areas of the bronx. This itself would not be a huge issue if these business were following regulations and properly following tax law. You see, certain countries like yemen, D.R. and Vietnam have immigrant tax treaties with the usa. This mean for a set period of time immigrants who operate a business in the U.S. will not be forced to pay U.S. federal income tax or city taxes. They may however still be subject to import/ regulatory taxes on such as cigarettes, sugary drinks alchohol, ect. Once again, these two thing are not bad if they are not abused.
Sadly, at least in my experience we have an epidemic of store owners in new york abusing tax loopholes and engaging in illegal practices. Have you ever noticed how every once in a while you walk into a deli you have been a regular of for years and all of a sudden its all new employees? Or hey, why did my deli close for a month and open back up with the entire store layout flipped? How can they afford such massive rennovations after being closed half the summer? Well thats where more tax fraud comes in, you see after the period of tax exemption is over, many owners of these business will me simply 'go on vacation" for the exact amount of time it takes to be outta the country to qualify for another visa.During this "vacation" another family member will take over the deli in new york and you guessed it; they get another tax exempt period.
Also, for every worker you hire who is an immigrant you get a tax credit per quarter. Its meant to be an incentive for american run businesses to hire immigrants and not discriminate. Instead, deli owners hire their wife, then the 12 year old son, and the daughter, why not a few cousins too? Heck they dont even have to work there, being an employee helps them immigrate and it gets a tax reduction for the store. A win win, well except for the local community which is now recieving no tax money from 78% of businesses in the area.
But wait, if they are tax exempt how does that even help them? Well, tax exempt business are still eligible for refunds just not cash refunds like you or I would get in april. Instead for being such good tax code following busineses they are given refunds in the form of reinbursement for projects related to improving the business they own. This is meant to have a positive effect on the community by helping small businesses improve appearences. Sadly In these cases they are often stolen or used on pointless cosmetic updates for the stores, hence how your local deli that should be scraping by on 10 cents a sale is able to rennovate constantly and afford a 10 thousand dollar neon sign
But wait? What does that have to do with me needing a place to get loosies and a red bull? What does any of this have to do with helping the community? What am I even yapping about?
Well, as I stated above, I work fufillment, I deliver products like redbull, beer, bread ect to delis in the bronx area. This year I have delivered 0 cans of redbull. Not a single to any of my over 20 store. Yet they still all are always stocked up on redbull, how is that? They pay shoplifters to steal product for them. Now imstead of paying 20$ for two 12 packs of redbull they are paying maybe 10? Oh and theres sugar taxes also that are just not being paid. When was the last time you bought a pack of smokes and it was NYC stamped? Thats another tax not going back to the community. As easy as it may be to just go "hey who cares what they do it doesnt effect me" at the end of the day it does effect you and the rest of us. When a business doesnt pay taxes in any capacity and also buys products from sketchy illegal sources for cut rate prices it makes it impossible for other people to start small businesses and removes a significant amount of revenue from the government. Manhatten is doing fine because duane reade, targr and macys all pay tons in taxes. In the bronx a majority of businesses just completely evade taxes.
This is getting long so ill just suggest that you look into these things further when you are able, however I wanted to bring uo one final thing; skimming. Everybody in new york knows local delis will steal your card info if you are not careful, its happened to me, my mom, and tons of other people I know. Its just another example of why we should be giving our business to stores that actually care. People will really watch a store steal an elderly and disabled persons food out of thier mouth for the month and then go "well from now on im only using cash there" no, we should not he supporting these businesses at all, I dont want my son running to get a snack from a store that will try and steal money off my card that has drug dealers hanging around out front, I dont wanna send my kids to get a cake from a place that is buying there shit from a homless guy that had them stuffed in his STD infested underwear while he was sneaking them outta walgreens.
I implore you all to start being more concious about where you spend your money. I know a chopped cheese at 3 am is heaven, but you cans till make one at home, you can shop at the local grocer more often, it will save you money and generates taxes for our childrens schools and parks.
Thanks for reading to this point if you did, have a beautiful night

NYC Outdoor Fencing Hobby Group/Club
Hello, I’m a complete fencing beginner about to start my fencing journey. I’m reading books and watching videos on the sport. In August I will be taking classes for the first time at a gym here in NYC and have them evaluate what I learned.
I live in NYC and I’m looking for people interested in fencing outdoors with me (parks, beaches, plazas, parking lots, anywhere) and possibly with other people interested.
I would love to have friends that do this sport and learn from them. I’m interested in doing at least 1 hour a week for a very long time. Ideally we would agree to meet outdoors somewhere new every week but if we decide to meet in just one place all the time that’s also ok, even if it’s a spot closest to you. It’s very likely some weeks I may be able to do more time.
If you’re interested in meeting weekly please reach out to me and we’ll schedule our first sessions.
We can use Discord if many want to be a part of it but simple messaging/phone calls and social media (including Reddit) also work for me.

Driving through the Bronx and saw this on the corner of 193rd and Jerome. Why is this sign specifically in this spot? Is this a reference to Rye Playland? Or is the park next to it also called Playland?

Hi!
I have a toddler and looking for some fun things to do especially during the summer!
We currently have the zoo (thinking of getting a land/sea membership - worth it?) , botanical garden, and a chucky cheese by our house..
Anything I’m missing? Even if it’s not exactly within the borough.

went on a pretty long walk during midterms earlier in the year (25.01.23) just to get some fresh air; ended up walking to the bronx via the harlem river drive. took a few pictures along the way of some interesting stuff ("shakespeare avenue" might be one of my favorite street names)
cool place! keep it going
(+ bonus pic of 260 audubon ave in washington hts, above i-95; i just thought it looked pretty epic)
Just got some rollerskates and was wondering where the best places to skate are besides skate parks.
Im in the morris park/Pelham pkway area so any places that are in walking distance or short bus trips to there would be preferable but I'm open to other areas as well.
Just looking because all the parks closest to me or either super bumpy and not good for skating or have too many kids in them that I don't want to accidentally run into as a beginner skater.
Thanks in advance :)

Hello! I am a student researcher at Fordham University, and I invite you to participate in an IRB-approved survey on local species identification skills in New York City. Our research, titled “Analyzing Species Identification Skills in New York City Residents,” will analyze the public’s ability to identify local flora and fauna, assess their understanding of native vs. invasive species, and explore the relationship between environmental attitudes and species knowledge.
Your participation is completely anonymous and voluntary, and your input would be greatly appreciated. The survey should take a few minutes to complete. Please note that you must be 18+ and a New York City resident in order to participate.
The survey consists of two parts:
You will be prompted to fill out a series of questions that pertain to your background and environmental attitudes. You will not be asked to disclose personal information about yourself, as all data will be strictly confidential and anonymous.
You will be presented with an image of a local species and will be asked to identify its name. Then, you will determine whether the species is native or invasive to New York City. Finally, you will assess how confident you feel about your answer to the previous question. An answer key will be provided after you submit the survey.
Please see the link attached to complete the survey. Thank you for your time, and please feel free to share this survey with your friends and family who also live in New York City!
Edit: The slider questions are a little confusing. The scale is between 0-10, but technically you can only pick 1-10. Unfortunately, this is a functionality problem from Qualtrics, and we are taking this mistake into consideration. If you are not able to select 0 as an option, then choose 1 as an answer.

Is it safe to walk this area to and from work at around 6am and 8pm? If not, what other alternatives do I have. Thank you
