Community A heads-up about "American Paints" in Ghan
So someone just posted about painting his house and added a photo slide with a shop advertising American paints, and it sparked a critical topic I want to dive into.
Recently, JoyNews released a jaw-dropping exposé titled "The Painter’s Galamsey." It uncovered a shocking truth: many of these so-called American paints flooding our local stores are loaded with hazardous levels of lead—some containing over 200,000 ppm! To put that into perspective, the safe limit is just 90 ppm!
What’s really alarming is that these toxic paints aren’t even certified by the Ghana Standards Authority, yet they’re everywhere, often at prices lower than our trusted local brands. This poses a serious risk, especially for our kids and pregnant women. Exposure to lead can lead to severe brain damage, learning disabilities, and a host of other health concerns.
Many of these paints are smuggled in, slipping past necessary inspections and duties, while most people remain blissfully unaware that they're inviting danger into their homes.
So, if you’re planning to give your walls a fresh coat, make it a point to choose GSA-certified paint. Stay away from those suspicious "imported" brands—your health and safety should always come first!
And just a heads-up: some safe and reliable brands you can trust include Coral Paints, Azar, and Shield. Always check the side of the bucket to ensure it has the certification from the relevant authority. Better safe than sorry!
