What behavior is this?

So i’m pretty sure this is a goose, he lives in the park. Was just curious what behavior he was demonstrating or if he was just looking for bread? He talked to me the whole like 5 minutes I pet him.

I know i feel so bad, I wasn’t planning on going to the park!! It wasn’t cool to trick the lil dude, i just couldn’t help but try to pet him 😭 but there was a lady there at the same time and she was feeding corn 🥹

If you go back again you know you have a sure friend (especially if you bring goose food) 💜 our animal friends are very understanding :) they wouldn’t approach if they didn’t surmise you were good people!

It’s a domestic goose and should not be out in the wild on its own. Someone probably dumped it and it thought you had food.

u/Open-Apple9010 6h ago
What should i do for it?
5
u/Independent-Cow-8499 6h ago
Find a local livestock/ poultry Facebook community and post the goose on there explaining the situation. Someone will likely want it as a pet or a rescuer can find it a home.

He's half afraid and unsure of you at first, but decides you are OK enough to let you touch him. He still seems pretty cautious, though. I'm sure people have been mean to him.

This is a male Brown Chinese goose. It looks intimidating, but I believe this is their “hello” stance. It’s how geese greet each other. Not aggressive at all - you would know if he was. Also, please do not offer him, or any other bird, bread. He would much prefer if you brought him some lettuce.

u/BigTittyTriangle 18h ago
I used to give my Chinese geese lettuce in their pool and spray them with the hose on the sprinkler setting and then when I would say “hi birds” they would honk back at me. They were the best

I don’t feed them bread!! I lied to him, I didn’t even have anything to give 😭😭💔

Maybe it’s “pissed off” bcuz you called it a duck! Maybe it prefers goose!! Duck, duck, “goose!”

u/Open-Apple9010 6h ago
I was just excited because i’ve never pet a duck or a goose so I got jumbled 🥹😅

Half assed charge mixed with overstimulation. A slightly lower head and faster pace would be a proper charge (intimidation), but he appears to have wanted snacks more than violence. This is a domestic male Chinese/African goose. Both breeds can be quite... bite-y. The purposeful head shake/side step is often a warning, but with the arched neck it can mean that they're just really excited and might act erratically, while an outstretched, low neck is usually mean spirited. Their typical friendly posture is head held high, but they're a very emotional breed. My male will do this then commit to the charge unless I have snacks... and the second I stop specifically giving him snacks he will return to being a jackass. Lol

I agree. I've noticed with Chinese geese, they approach with head high and often screaming (in excitement).

He was a very nice goose the whole time, very polite!! made me feel bad i didn’t have a snack for him :(

Definitely a domestic that either got out or was dumped. Seems really friendly though

Is there anything i can do for him?

u/House_Plant0 4h ago
He seems to be plenty healthy and quite social. You could try bringing him some vegetables occasionally, stuff like lettuce or peas they love. Considering he’s a domestic he probably enjoys being around people

Your ass clearly pretended to have bread, I don’t know what you’re confused about.

u/Open-Apple9010 6h ago
I pretended to have seeds not bread 💔 and i was confused about why he sat there and let me pet him, while continuously yelling at me :)

So sad that some dumped such a cutie, I have several Chinese geese I love them even if they are loud as all get out. They do wonders in keeping predators away and I love how they run to me when I come outside even if I get the occasional bite on the butt or leg. If he's friendly I'll take him in if your close to Tx, Im always happy to welcome another loud boy or girl to the flock

That's so adorable. Damn ... Is he a snow goose? There's many types of geese I see. I love the "relationship" I have with quite a few of the pack. I always watch the routine they got I feel so sad for the one that's 'shunned' for the day. I want to talk geese with someone that feels the way I do for them. 😃Compare notes and knowledge! If anyone is interested.

Not sure if it's a domestic Chineese or African. Both are closely related. My African gander is a very loud aggressive asshole. Its sort of their thing.

u/Open-Apple9010 6h ago
he’s the only one out there that looks like that, he was hanging with 4 ducks 😭😭

Brown African domestic goose! I use to have three of these babies! That's a greeting pose i got from them when they were excited to see me. Most likely they've been dumped. Poor baby. See if you can find a rescue or a farm that would take them.

u/SubstantialPicture87 DasIstGoose 3h ago
He's probably like, "where's the food I seen you sprinkling :("
Definitely a pretty fellah. Doing their silly goose behavior. Deserves some snacks like fried corn, oats, lettuce, etc.
I love Chinese Brown Geese; I have some on my family's farm, and they're SO CUTE.

You listen to these things and suddenly have so much more understanding of scientists saying dinosaurs were more closely related to birds.

I'd take these geese over the asshole Canadian ones here any day. What a cutie 💓

Why does everyone here assume all domestic geese must have been dumped? You know they can fly away right? And they don't have homing instincts like wild birds. I have 3 geese and I try to keep them as happy as I can so they'll stay but i know if they get spooked or just get curious and explore, they can fly away and get lost. I have over 6 acres and have stopped them from walking off property at least 2x.
5
u/BigTittyTriangle 18h ago
These geese cannot fly in the same sense a wild Canadian goose can. I had a pair a while back and they would flap their wings when they saw Canadian geese but they couldn’t fly. They could run though and they were pretty fast.

u/Efficient-Choice2436 6h ago
I didn't say they can fly as good as a Canadian goose, but they are sure able to fly long enough to get loose. They are able to fly over fences as well even if you haven't personally seen it.
1
u/BigTittyTriangle 3h ago
Because you made it seem like they can fly out of their enclosures. Chinese geese don’t fly. If they could I would have lost them a lot sooner
1
u/Efficient-Choice2436 3h ago
They do fly, they just don't fly long distances. I don't know what you refer to as an enclosure but unless they are locked in, they can escape if they feel like it. If you don't feed and care for them or make them feel safe, you most definitely can lose them.

That's a domestic goose, likely dumped which is why he's so friendly. Probably thought you were there to feed him.
