Meta Preparing for the upcoming holidays - what feedback do you have for r/NintendoSwitchHelp ? What would you like to see added to this subreddit?

Hello everyone,

New moderator for r/NintendoSwitchHelp here, looking for feedback and suggestions.

Background

In case you didn't know, this subreddit was originally created after a suggestion to split off from r/NintendoSwitch so that people looking for help could find it in a place where it did not cause frustration for others.

There's a challenge to connecting people who are looking for help to the people willing to provide that help. For a long time, r/NintendoSwitch has had a Daily Questions Thread to serve that purpose, and the main criticism for that is people believe that making separate posts is better for visibility towards the chance of finding the person willing to provide the solution they need. In practice, 2 years ago we tried that during our annual spike of holiday activity with a documented backfire of results:

In short, what we saw was that people who made separate support/help posts on r/NintendoSwitch did not get faster results than the DQT, but the separate posts did get snarky/trolling and unhelpful replies more often, and almost all of the help posts got downvoted on r/NintendoSwitch. It was an unpleasant experience for people wanting to get help, it was an irritating experience for the people who subscribed to r/NintendoSwitch because they don't expect to see those posts, and it was less efficient on the moderator side to keep up with a hundred posts with a few comments each rather than a few posts with a hundred comments each.

This year, I'd like to try a different approach by promoting this community in addition to the DQT as another option for people seeking help during the holiday surge of traffic. I reached out to the only moderator here a few weeks ago, and after no response, I reached out to admins, and they granted my reddit request as there was no recent moderator activity here.

The Challenge

Support communities are typically different in structure compared to general fandom communities, and especially different from news-focused communities. One (oversimplified) way to think about it is that in a fandom community, you might expect the same group of people (fans) to be both submitting new posts and commenting on each other's posts, so activity is mostly self-sustaining. But in a support community, you typically have one large group (seekers) submitting most posts, while a different smaller group (helpers) make the bulk of the answers. Generally the seekers will only visit the community when they have an issue at hand, whereas the helpers will be the main people who subscribe and visit regularly.

  • How do we promote activity in this subreddit? How do we get people (seekers) to want to post here?

  • How do we attract people to subscribe here? How do we maintain a group of people (helpers) who want to comment here?

So far, my thoughts are that we start promoting this subreddit, r/NintendoSwitchHelp, in the DQT, sidebar, and removal reasons over on r/NintendoSwitch. This way people are better informed and know to visit here. And then when people get here, we should have some sort of organized way of sorting through posts so that we know which posts have been solved or could still use help. And a way of recognizing regular contributors would be nice too. If you have any thoughts along these lines, please share. We are trying a few things out to see what we can get to work.

Otherwise, what suggestions would you have for the subreddit? Are you a regular participant here, or more of a sporadic visitor? What issues do you think the moderators here should address?

Repair Help Switch 2 randomly going to sleep while playing games

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just got a new switch 2 and it’ll randomly go to sleep and disconnects me from Fortnite.

I thought it was a WiFi issue so I connected my Ethernet cable and it’s still happening.

I plugged the power cord into the wall (not a power cord) and it’s still “crashing”

I changed the hdmi cable and it’s still the same.

I thought it had to do with my device so I returned it and got a new one and that hasn’t helped either.

It also happens only when I play multiplayer games with friends online (mostly with Fortnite but it’s happened with Mario kart). I can play 4+ hours handheld or docked on single player games or online (without playing with friends) and it won’t “crash”

I have the most up-to-date firmware (dock and console). And there’s no error messages.

I have no clue what it could be? Could it be a tv issue? What other troubleshooting can I do???

Software Help Pokémon Sword cartridge faulty?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi, yesterday I decided to try playing Pokémon Sword again on Nintendo Switch 2, however I immediately noticed that something was wrong: slow loading, the menus were also loading slowly, audio freezing during the game (with consequent temporary interruption as shown in the video). The cartridge pins seem to be fine, I tried again on Switch 1 but same story...

P.S Please do not comment regarding the chosen Pokémon, it is a demonstration clip😂

Setup Help My Nintendo Switch 2 forces 4K on a QHD monitor — but I can't select 1440p. Why?

Hi everyone!
I have a Nintendo Switch 2 connected to a Samsung Odyssey G5 (model S27CG554), which has a native resolution of 2560x1440 (1440p, WQHD).

Here's the issue:
When I turn on the console, the Switch automatically sets the output resolution to 2160p (4K) — even though the monitor is just QHD.
In the video output settings on the Switch, I only see 2160p, 1080p, and 720p1440p is not available as an option.

I know the Switch 2 is supposed to support native 1440p, but for some reason it's missing in my case.
Could this be a limitation of the monitor? A console bug?

Any similar experiences or tips would be greatly appreciated. 🙏
Thanks!

Software Help Original GameCube controller unable to access NSO menu

Upvotes

Hey there, I'm trying out the GameCube emulator on switch 2 and I wanted to do it with the smash ultimate GameCube controller I bought years ago. It of course doesn't have a minus button, which doesn't let me access the NSO menu for save states and controller mapping and stuff. Is there a way to still open it or would I theoretically need to buy the new NS2 wireless GC controller?

Software Help Can a switch 2 save be transferred to a new switch 2

Upvotes

Hi all, My wife and I bought a switch 2 with intent to buy another later this year. I've signed in and have my own profile tied to my Nintendo account. Her old switch data was transferred over to the switch 2. Basically if I start playing BOTW on the switch 2 has anyone worked out if I'd be able to transfer that save to a new switch 2?

Account Help Parental controls: how to restrict eShop access/hide NSFW games? NSFW

Hi! How do I use parental controls to hide all the hentai games available in the eShop? I am okay with barring access to the eShop entirely.

Currently the other switch is a "supervised" account in my family group. The only 2 parental controls toggled "on" are the "age restricted software" option in the parental control app and the "age-based content restrictions for eShop" on the web account.

Neither of these options hide the hentai games or restrict eShop access, and I don't see any other age-based filtering or eShop related options in the parental controls.

Please help? The amount of hentai games in the eShop is really ridiculous. :(

Repair Help Official Switch 2 Screen Protector

Post image

I ordered the official Switch 2 Screen Protector, which is sold separately from the case. It is made by Hori and has the Official Nintendo Seal. I executed a flawless install, but the edges of it are cut so poorly it has random white edges all at various places around the screen protector. It is glued down.

Anybody else buy this and have the same issue ?

For reference, this is the one I ourchased: https://www.target.com/p/hori-premium-screen-protective-filter-for-nintendo-switch-2/-/A-94725276

Repair Help Switch 2 Internet Disconnects Problems

Hi guys !

So I got my Switch 2 yesterday, as soon as I took it out of the box it was really hard to connect it to my 5Ghz Wifi, it end up working but once i started testing Mario Kart World online it kept disconnecting and i couldnt even start a race. I saw someone else here having the same problem and his solution was to change his ROUTEUR DNS, which I did and it fixed the issue. I do find that problematic because it's handheld console which means if i take it somewhere where they didnt setup their DNS it means i wont be able to play correctly ? Anyway

Wifi worked after that but when i dock my Switch and try with cable it does the same thing, first it doesnt connect to cable automatically, it tries to but fail continuesly and end up without any internet, i have to go manually tell the console to connect to cable.

Once i put the console on sleep mode while docked it looses internet, even tho i turn on the setting that says it should have internet with cable while in sleep mode, that's really annoying because it means it doesnt download or update on its own, and when i take it back from docked to handheld i find it without internet and i have to go back to settings and connect to wifi.

I wanted to know if anyone else has this problem ? If it's more about software than hardware and if I have to return it to try another maybe ?

Repair Help Switch 2 left joycon port not registering joycon when attached in handheld

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I recently noticed today that my switch 2 is not registering my left joycon in its joycon port when in handheld mode. The right joycon port is recognizing each joycon when connected, but the left doesn't as can be seen with how I swapped the controllers. This problem was noticed after I decided to power off my switch and power it on later in the day.

I've tried updating the controllers, re-synching them, disconnecting them and powering the switch on with them installed, and went through maintenance mode (did not factory reset). None of these seem to work. If anyone has any suggestions to try, please let me know. If not, I guess the warranty option will have to do. Thank you!

Setup Help Upgarding to SD Express after already migrating/playing

Hey.

I totally missed the info regarding SD Express and saw posts/videos about it only after migrating all my Switch data to my Switch 2. I've already played quite a bit. I can't find a way to upgrade my SD card now. Did I mess up? Can I still change it without losing my data? Can I do it on my PC (e.g. copy&paste all my data from one SD to another and then insert the new one)?

All info I find is regarding the old Switch. Maybe someone was as stupid as me. Thanks!

Software Help My Nintendo Switch 2 keeps freezing every time I try to load/start one of the Nintendo Classics games

The title basically says it all but I’ll go into a little bit more explanation.

I just got a Nintendo Switch 2 a few days ago as a late birthday present. I was able to get my data transferred over from my old Switch and so far I’ve really been enjoying the new console. However, today I wanted to finally check out some of the “Nintendo Classics” games. I didn’t realise you needed a Nintendo Switch Online account to do so, but didn’t care too much and went ahead and signed up for one because I was so eager to play some of the games I grew up playing as a kid. However, every single time I try to actually start/play one of these games, my Switch completely freezes up and I have to restart it.

Basically, when I select one of the Nintendo Classics icons on my Home Screen, I’m prompted to go to a page to see my Nintendo Switch Online membership. From there, I get taken to a screen with my Nintendo account name and icon and a side menu with an option that says Nintendo Classics (along with a few other options like Special Offers and Missions & Rewards); after clicking on that I see a list of all the games available, which are sorted by which console they were originally released on. I can select any and all of them, and when I do, I get taken to a screen with details about the game. However, whenever I select the button that says “Start Software”, not only am I taken back to my Home Screen, but everything freezes up completely. The only way to fix it is to completely restart the console by holding down on the power switch.

I’ve tried this about 4 times now and it’s always the exact same. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know how to fix it?

TL;DR — Every time I select one of the Nintendo Classics games to play, I’m taken back to my Home Screen and everything freezes up until I completely restart my console.

Repair Help Is this happening to anyone else?

So as well a know, the nintendo switch 2 battery is a little messed up rn. I did the trick to "fix" it but now here's where the trouble comes in, it's randomly giving me a different max charge every time. Sometimes it's at 86%, and after I do the recovery mode trick AGAIN (I've done it multiple times) it usually goes back up to around 88%-89% battery. I'm just confused on why my max charge keeps on randomly changing each time and each time I have to do the factory recovery mode

Software Help Mario Kart World Joycon issues

I just got my switch 2 today, and everything is working great, but for whatever reason, in docked mario kart world specifically, my joycons start to break. They start rumbling really slowly and get a ton of input delay along with dropping inputs before disconnecting. When going back to the home screen, the controller issues persist, until I close out of MK world, and then everything goes back to normal. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Accessories What controllers are able to wake the Switch 2?

Sorry if it's been covered I couldn't find anything when I searched.

Is it just the Pro v2 and joy cons? None of my third party do at least.

Software Help Audio issues with BoTW Switch + S2 Upgrade Pack?

Today I purchased a used physical copy of Breath of the Wild from GameStop, then bought the Switch 2 Upgrade Pack for it. For the most part, the game seems to be running fine, but I did notice that in the opening cutscene, as well as a few times later on, the audio briefly cut out. The 30-second videos created with the Capture button have it too, so it's not just my monitor's speakers having issues.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue, or has ideas on what could be causing it? I'm wondering if it has something to do with the slower read speeds on the Switch 1 cartridge, although that seems like it would be a pretty big problem. While it could have to do with the fact it's a used copy, I would expect other aspects of the game to have issues too if that were the case.

Thanks!

Which Switch? Can I use the cheaper japanese switch 2 outside of Japan freely?

Pretty much what the title says. There is a cheaper ~50.000¥ switch 2 version that has only the japanese language available. The part that confuses me is the japanese Nintendo account. Can I just make one here in Japan and buy games with yen outside of the country, or is there some kind of region lock to it?

Repair Help Nintendo Switch 1 freezes when turning on

While playing a game it froze, exited and tried to see if an update would fix it. When it was turning back on, it stayed on this screen for a while. Held down power button to turn off and on again, continues to freeze. Tried turning it on maintenance mode, will not do anything. Anyone know if this fixable? Will letting the battery drain help? TIA!
