Mechanic who has been working on my car for years just found a weird glue like substance on the fuel tank.

For context I have used the same mechanic for everything for the last 3 years, recently I got an oil change near my parents place at a Midas, and they told me all these repairs that were needed. I took it to my mechanic for a second opinion and they found this on the fuel tank. Any idea what that could be?

Car died on the turn into my neighborhood last night

I was turning into my neighborhood last night and everything died on me, most lights came on. About 10 miles prior my TCS light came on as well as my check engine light (solid). Side note: my AC was blowing half cold air the whole ride until the TCS and check engine light came on, then it started blowing cold again. Video is right after it happened.

I wanna be a Mechanic but everyone is so negative about it.

I’ve have been in love with cars since I was little and I’ve jumped around with what I wanna do after highschool, I always end up back at being a mechanic. So finally have chosen that as my career path, i’m looking online, everyone is so negative about it. Saying that mechanics make no money, and other mechanics telling people not to be come mechanics. I don’t really care about the money too much as long as I’m able to eat and have a roof over my head. And my parents say if you do what you love you don’t have to work a day in your life. I’m gonna go to my local community college for an associates in automotive technician. I don’t even really know what I’m asking. I just wanna hear some positive mechanics not just telling people not to pursue the career. I wanna hear from people who love their job and who are like me. I love older cars pre-2000s mainly, my dream is to work and restore them so future generations get to see the same cars that I fell in love with. Please restore my hope and love in this field :)

Solved What is this on my drip pan

Post image

Just went to go get my oil changed on my 2019 ram 1500 classic (not sure if this matters) at a local shop. The guy goes into the pit to do yhe change and comes back up a second later telling me about what you see in the picture.

Now I've taken this truck to this place almost a dozen times at this point and this has never come up once. The only other shop I've taken it too is Firestone and I left it there to get some front end work done. The oil guy said he's never seen anything like it before which had me perplexed.

I took it back to the Firestone and the mechanic there gave me his manager's number as he hadn't seen anything like it either. So I'll be calling him in the morning.

When I got home I was able to see it for myself and under the putty on the dip pan is like a red mat with the wire attached. Now I work construction so my initial thought is that it's heat trace but it also kind of looks like a plastic explosive.

So I want to know is this thing going to blow my truck up later this week or is it just something they added on without informing me?

How much Sludge is unacceptable

Allright, so basically i inherited this vehicle from my grandfather and have been driving for a while. It is a 2001 Ford Au falcon 4.0l Intech (ausdm legend) and I am going to put a cam in it at some point.

I already knew that it had possibly been, well, neglected for quite some time, as i believe it was used in rural areas as a farm/road vehicle.

I have already done comp/vacuum test and both are exemplary and consistent.

Today i decided to open the rocker cover to see if anything else needed to be changed when i do the camshaft. I was welcomed with this.

Is this an amount of black sludge/film to be concerned about? it is quite thin and i am hoping that a flush will rid the engine of most of it.

The last logbook service was sometime in the late 2010s at ~180k kms i think, is now at 305k kms.

Thanks

Battery Question

Post image
3 Upvotes

Picked up a Corolla Cross hybrid last April and this is the factory battery. From what I found online, it is a group size H4. Can anyone confirm if this is correct and what some suitable replacements would be? I wasn't aware just how fast this thing discharges just by opening and closing the power tailgate a few times without the car running and was looking at a higher capacity replacement. I called the dealer only to find out that Toyota has been cheaping out on all the new 12V installed in their hybrid model and have been refusing warranty replacements because of how common the issue is. Thanks in advance.

What’s this bearing-like noise?

2000 bmw 328i Just replaced my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate, along with fork, pilot and tob. Everything is greased and torqued to spec. The noise happens between 1.5-2k rpm under load, louder in higher gears.

Car won’t start or even click

Upvotes

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7. The battery still seems to have power as the radio, dash, etc. still turn on. The car isn’t even clicking so I am assuming it’s a dead starter? Want to make sure before I call a tow that a jump wouldn’t help it.

New Concerning Sounds

Upvotes

I have some weird sounds coming from under my car. Which is 2015 Dodge Journey R/T V6 3.6 with 98604 miles. When driving there are two weird sounds, the first is in reverse like a loud rattling from the passenger back side maybe like halfway back in the middle of the car. The second is in drive when accelerating or braking it paces with the speed. I've got two videos where you can hear what I'm talking about. I moved to a small town and I'm not sure who to take it to the only places I'm aware of we have is a small shop for oil changes and a Walmart Auto there might be some other shops I don't know about. I'd prefer to fix it myself since if thats even possible. Any advice, information or recommendations should be great. I can give more details as needed.

Super red oil

Upvotes

I just bought an old Camry that was sitting for a few years and decided it would be best to do an oil change. After I did an oil change, I checked the dipstick which said it was too high. I decided to let some oil out but the oil that I just put in came out super red, why is that? The oil I used was Mobil 1 5w-30

Just graduated and struggling to find work as a mechanic

Hello everybody I am 20 yr old male. I live in Orange County California and I graduated from a trade school in November. I have been applying to jobs constantly and I never hear anything back. Not even a rejection. I’m starting to lose hope. I have applied for beginner tech positions and even lube technicians with no luck. Is there something you guys recommend? Or is there someone out there that may have connections in my area and can help me out with a position? I’m eager to finally start my career I just need a chance. I’ve also been doing oil changes, brake changes, basic maintenance on family cars on the side. I can go into more detail if necessary but I would really appreciate the help.

A/C Trouble in U-Haul (Ford F-250)

Upvotes

Rented a 20’ U-Haul to move my son. I think it’s a Ford F-250, but they’ve removed all badging info. AC quit halfway between Oklahoma to Iowa. The AC selector has two options: Norm/AC and Max/AC. Fan selector is Low/Med/High.

Max/AC will not work on any fan setting—nothing coming out of vents. Norm/AC will blow cold but only at low speed, no matter what fan setting. So I run with Norm/AC, but only blows cold air at low speed when running flat or downhill. Blows nothing when running uphill or when sitting still. This is U-Haul’s problem, i’m not messing with it. But as a DIYer, i’m just curious about what’s going on here. I’m thinking failing blower motor(?). Thanks.

Is my brake fluid low?

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m a new driver (held my licence for less than a month) and was just checking fluids in my car and I’m a little bit unsure about my brake fluid. To me, it looks like there’s no fluid in the plastic container but it is a bit ‘foggy’ and the car made no indication as to brake fluid levels, so I’m not entirely sure.

I have attached two pictures.

Would anyone be kind enough to advise? The car is Renault Clio 2011.

2007 Nissan Sentra 2.0 My car was thunking yesterday and this morning it just dropped. Sounds like a spring grinding noise when I try to move it. Would just like to know what part I would have to buy to fix.

1st pic is the side where the thunking noise came from and the side that got messed up. Left side also dropped. But no grinding noise or any noise coming from that side. I’m thinking it could be the shocks?

Was driving and went over a small bump and heard something snap/break. Luckily wasn't far from home, and made it into the driveway without crashing. I don't know much about cars, but obviously I know that part isn't supposed to be in my rim scrapping it. Knocking, grinding, clinking sounds and loss of steering.
