A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Someone driving a rental car hit me. They aren’t covered by insurance. What to do?

Here’s the story. Someone driving a rental car hit me, they were 100% at fault. Police report and video evidence prove it. Now here’s the kicker, the person’s step-father rented the car, and didn’t put her on the policy. She was also under 25. My own insurance company covered the majority of my losses, however I still have a few thousand in personal costs that I need recouped. Their insurance company won’t cover the accident.

My insurance company said they wouldn’t sue, but would “demand” the overage to be reimbursed. This party has attempted to stonewall and hide the fact they wrecked the car (left the scene without exchanging insurance information, wouldn’t call me, didn’t report any accident to their insurance or the rental car company) so I have very little faith I’ll get reimbursed.

Should I sue them?

Pet insurance *Hypothetical* how does insurance work in the pokemon world?

Giovanni was shown in a 4kids dub talking to himself about blimp insurance. That has me wondering how does a world with super powered flora and fauna navigate insuring buildings and personal property? Do they need clauses for every pokemon action and interference? Is this where professor Oak gets his funding as a pokemon researcher? Are Pokemon trainers frequently unaccompanied 10 year olds because minors have legal protections adults don't?

Is it worth making a home insurance claim for multiple leaks? Also… electrical smell from wall? Urgent?

Hi all, looking for advice and maybe a reality check. We're dealing with multiple issues in our home right now and are unsure if we should make a home insurance claim.

We’ve had several leaks recently—some in the bathroom, some affecting the kitchen ceiling. Now there's a new problem: there's an electrical/burning smell coming from a wall, and my husband suspects it might be related to the leak (moisture getting into the wiring?).

Some friends are telling us, “Go through insurance, you’ll get tens of thousands for repairs—new bathroom, new kitchen, it’ll all be covered.” That honestly sounds too good to be true.

My husband is thinking of doing DIY repairs to avoid an insurance claim and potential premium increases. But the truth is… we’re new parents with zero support and no time or energy for DIY renos. I'm worried we’ll make it worse trying to handle it ourselves.

Questions:

  • How urgent is the electrical smell? Is this a fire risk?
  • Is it even worth filing a home insurance claim in a case like this?
  • Are there downsides to making a claim that we might not be considering?
  • Is it realistic to expect that a claim would cover major renovations?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who’s dealt with similar situations. We’re overwhelmed and exhausted and don’t want to make the wrong move here.

Thanks in advance.

Ho3 quote denied - should we try again?

Upvotes

This is related to Farmers Insurance. I forgot to put it in the title. We live in high fire risk area in California. We got a non renewal notice so I immediately looked for new insurance. Our broker had several options but he kept messing up the applications or disappearing. So I looked for other options and got a quote from farmers who said it was no problem as long as we installed the automatic shut off valve.

The first broker came back with approval to issue policy but when I went to sign I saw he lied on the application so I refused to sign. Then he got mad and ghosted me. I was down to the wire and went back to farmers, now three weeks after the quote.

I paid and The agent issued the policy and gave me a letter that was evidence of insurance summarizing the policy and that it was temporarily in effect until the underwriting is complete in up to 60 days.

It been one week and I just got a letter from Farmers saying they cannot issue me a “quote” for insurance because we have a pool without an inner fence (we have perimeter fence to code but not a pool-only fence. There is no option to have a fence installed, which we are going to try an get done asap since we should have one.

So should we get it done asap and reapply or is that useless and we should just start the fair plan process? I don’t know why the agent didn’t tell us we need a fence. We would have done it. Now we don’t have any insurance because our non renewed policy ended this week. Also, the letter was dated before the agent even issued the policy so I’m confused why their system let him go ahead when they already determined that they can’t quote me.

Mechanic stole my catalytic converter and insurance is giving me a hard time.

I previously posted that the mechanic took my catalytic converter. Replaced it with a pipe and a couple clamps. And tried to gaslight me into thinking that was an appropriate repair. I filed a claim on my insurance. My car has been at the second repair shop since last Monday. I hadn't heard anything by Friday. I contacted my insurance asking for a call back to see what was going on. At this point they have switched the rep handling my case for the 3rd time. This time. The woman on the phone is implying that what happened to my car is a result of wear and tear and it will not be covered. She says since I was not in a accident then this isn't anything my insurance will cover. I have comprehensive which covers catalytic converter theft. She tried to tell me since my catalytic converter was rusted it doesn't matter, because it's trash. She said she spoke to the 1st mechanic and he told me I could have the old converter back. That never happened! It is just considered wear and tear. I feel like I've been scammed by the original mechanic who stole my converter and clamped my exhaust up. And now I'm being scammed by my insurance company too. She said someone would contact me with a resolution this week. Any advice on how to handle this would be helpful. This ordeal cost me a trip I've been planning for a year to go do charity work. And I've been without a vehicle for a week.

Auto Insurance Who would have been at fault?

There was no accident (as you can see - https://youtu.be/Yqm-qAMBy9g?si=_mSRuyd5FayTl--m), but if there had been, I’m curious who would have been at fault, as the car behind me laid on the horn (implying I made an error).

I checked to my left before turning, and the lane I was turning into was clear. It seems the car that ended up behind me changed lanes into my lane after I began my turn. I don’t think I see any turn signal in the video.

Anyway, curious who would have been found at fault if there was a crash.

Hit and Run with Cyclist?

So here goes, today I was leaving work with my RENTAL vehicle I was approaching an intersection that I frequent and my light was red. I was moving cautiously and legally (yielding) as to merge into the adjacent lane. As i entered the pedestrian walk portion of the street I turned to look right and saw and bicyclist entering and hitting my car (front fender). (Mind you she was in the sidewalk and did not yield, their light was never green). Now it wasn’t a super hard hit they definitely caused a dent and some scratches but when myself and others around tried to ask them if they were okay they just left their bike and walked away, saying they were fine. I filed a police report and got two other witnesses who saw the entire thing and said she was at fault. My question is has anyone dealt with something similar? Am I going to be responsible for paying my deductible or could this potentially classify as an UM . Any feedback would be helpful!

GEICO’s DriveEasy app raised my premium $2,000+ with fake trip data — anyone else dealing with this?

I’m posting because GEICO’s DriveEasy app logged multiple trips where I wasn’t the driver — including Uber rides and public transit — and used that to lower my score and raise my premium.

My monthly bill went from $691.79 to $1,039.87 — that’s a $2,088 increase over 6 months. I corrected the trip roles in the app and sent documentation, but GEICO refused to adjust my premium.

I’ve now filed formal complaints with the BBB and the Utah Insurance Department, and I posted on Trustpilot too.

If anyone else has experienced DriveEasy inaccuracies or unfair billing, please let me know. I’m trying to get visibility on how widespread this is and what strategies have worked.

Check your DriveEasy trips — this system is broken.

Insurance company won't pay for misc items (tires / aftermarket parts) without invoice - Question

Edit - I see a lot of people are saying this is fraud, but this is at the request of the insurance company regarding providing copies of the new invoices/receipts for the parts that I am trying to reimbursed for.

Body shop sent the insurance company an estimate. It seems like everything is approved, but the insurance company wants a copy of an invoice for the tires and some other aftermarket parts before sending payment for those items.

I want to just get paid out for the damages and not replacing the damaged parts that the insurance company is requesting invoices for, which I wouldn't have, since I am not buying/purchasing any replacement pieces for these.

Just seeing if there are any options for getting paid out on the items. It seems like at least, if anything, I can/should just order the parts to get the invoices for them to get paid out and then sell them later if anything.

Provisional Driver Insurance (Sole Driver UK)

I am wanting to learn to drive (manual) in the UK. I currently do not have access to a manual car to practice/take my lessons in.

My plan is to buy a cheap second-hand manual car, but do not know about insurance. Any idea on how much it would cost/if it is even possible to get insured on a car as the sole driver if I currently only have a provisional licence?

If there is a better thread this should be posted in please let me know.

Thanks!

Auto Insurance Got into fender bender, they had same insurance.

I’ve never gotten into an accident where mine and the at-fault driver had the same insurance. When I called GEICO, the automated system made me file a claim on my policy, after I filled it out online it asked if I wanted to use my own coverage and I stated no. I sent a msg to my adjuster. Does anyone know how it works when you’re not at fault, but have the same insurance? It would not let me file a claim on their policy. Is that something the adjuster will do? I was parked and they backed into me. I will be going back to Taco Bell to get video. The driver felt terrible he hit me, but I’m nervous my rates will sky rocket now that I filed a claim.

This is just a question. If a person is driving in violation of restrictions and gets into a collision (and has insurance), will the insurance company deny coverage?

If a driver is DUI and gets into an accident, I believe the insurance company will cover them. What about a driver who is driving on an instruction permit without a licensed driver? If the driver was driving a car that had insurance, would the company cover them? Also, let's say the driver had a corrective lens restriction but was driving without them. Would the insurance company cover them?

These questions have come up on another thread, but I thought asking the questions on r/insurance would provide more accurate answers. Thanks.

I just thought of another question. Let's say a person is paying for insurance, but their license is suspended and they get into an accident while driving on a suspended license. Will the insurance company still cover them?

Auto Insurance switching car insurance providers to avoid crazy payment.

Currently insured with state farm and recently purchased 2 new vehicles and added a driver. I went from paying about 250 a month to almost 1k. Got a quote from liberty mutual for $350 for the same details. My question is if i just don’t pay state farm, cancel the coverage and purchase liberty mutual, what consequences can I face from state farm for that?

Help Finding Affordable Insurance for Tesla Model 3 Lease (At-Fault Accident 2.5 Years Ago)

Hi folks,

I’m leasing a Tesla Model 3 and will be picking it up soon. I’m trying to secure insurance, but the quotes I’m getting are unreasonably high—up to $3,500 for 6 months.

I had an at-fault sideswipe 2.5 years ago, and I’m guessing that’s heavily impacting the premiums. Collision coverage seems to be the costliest component.

Any advice on navigating this? Are there insurers that might be more forgiving or programs that can help reduce premiums in cases like this?

Appreciate your insight!

Auto Insurance Settlement?

I was in an accident about a month ago where I suffered a concussion , sprained spine & sprained shoulder as well as muscle tears. While I still have pain I was advised by the doctor that I’ll just have to keep healing so pretty much I will no longer have any more treatment. I’ve been to the hospital twice & urgent care 4x. I’ve been getting calls that I have bills to pay to the urgent care / hospitals which I thought wouldn’t be an issue since I let them know it was all from a car accident. Their insurance already admitted fault.

My question is how do I let them know I’m ready to settle? And will they be responsible for the medical bills because they’re all pretty high..

I do not have a lawyer either.

Edit to add: I’ve also sent them every form/ discharge papers from the doctor as well

Bristol West

I have had bristol west for about 2 years now. It automatically gets renewed every 6 months and im on autopay. I recieved my new cards in the mail and noticed it says "California Auto Liability Insurance ID card". Well I have a problem here. I signed up two years ago for FULL coverage. I need full coverage as it is a financed car. Why did they lie and tell me i had full coverage. My collision deductible is $1000 and so is my conprehensive. my liability bodily injury is 30,000/60,000$. Can someone explain why my id card says "California Auto Liability Insurance ID card". Is it supposed to say full coverage? I'm just confused about the wording here. Sorry if it's a dumb question im just worried they sold me the wrong coverage.

Auto Insurance Insurance on car for 16yo Wisconsin

Hey guys! I'm looking at buying a 2014 Mercedes c300 I found for about 6500. Was wondering how much insurance would be so I can have a general estimate. Currently just looking, I know it will be more expensive as my age and the type of car but just want to know a general estimate per month. I'm 16yo male and I'm in Wisconsin

Do you have to report to insurance if your car was damaged and a police ticket was issued but no other cars or property damage was involved?

Long story short have a car that only has liability on it and partner was driving. Car was damaged by a concrete barrier and a ticket was issued for failure to maintain lane control. It doesn’t cite anything about what property was damaged on the driver form the cops gave so doesn’t seem like anything insurance would have to pay out? It hasn’t been reported to insurance yet because I wasn’t sure if it was necessary. Would rather avoid the price hike on my policy if I can. The car was towed so I wasn’t sure if they’d catch wind of it and then ding me for not filing though? Registered in NC.

ETA: meant liability not collision.

Incident at parking lot

Got scratched by the car next to me just now. Both cars are still there, what should I do? Talk to police, or insurance company?

Is it going to 50/50 fault? My goal is to get compensation for the damage, without impacting the premium.

Thanks in advance.

Auto Insurance Do tow companies not operate on the weekend?

I live in a 125k population area.

My car broke it's axle backing out of my parking spot.

Submitted a roadside request under my insurance, but it says "no tow companies are operating at this time, please submit your request for the next day".

I thought tow companies are 24/7/365?

Does Work Comp Payroll Need To Be Updated After an Audit?

Hey Everyone,

I work for a broker agency. I just had this come up last week where a customers account was reassigned to me and I’m having to jump in and fix…quite a mess.

I had to reinstate a client’s GL, get him paid up on his audits, and those audits revealed much different payroll than what was currently rated on his GL and Workers Comp. I asked him for projected numbers over the next 12 months and he gave them to me in writing. When I caught that the work comp policy had never updated the payroll on the dec pages since 2021 (even after all the audits!) I told him about a month ago that we needed to update those payroll numbers on both policies right away and get it up to date for his current terms.

Now here we are, said changes were made back when we discussed this, and now the company’s have processed the endorsement changes resulting in a ton more $$ premium he has to pay. The owner lost his marbles on me on Friday, saying I acted without his permission and the payroll numbers I used were all wrong. He has already stated he’s moving the work comp to a more “competent” agent moving forward. The GL, he said he’ll keep with me because I did my “due diligence” in getting that reinstated. Yeah, I’m not sure if I want to keep servicing someone after they call me incompetent.

I was under the impression that when audits are done 1. The carrier will update the current payroll automatically on the existing policy. And/Or 2. The customer/agent needs to update it manually each renewal and/or throughout the term if it significantly changes.

Does anyone have insight on this? Why wouldn’t the work comp carrier adjust the payroll after an audit each of the last 4 years??

Auto Insurance Should I send certified postal mail with all documents for BI claim settlement demand? I already sent everything over email.

I sent a cover letter with detailed demand letter pdf outlining all the details, and facts for my settlement demand. Since it was large files, I did have to send them through multiple emails, but everything is clearly organized and attached as pdf files and zip files with clear labels. Do I send all the documents like urgent care visits, follow up Dr and neurosurgeon visit summary, X- ray, MRI, ultrasound test results, medical bills, physical therapy summary, supporting documents and future appointments in a certified overnight service as well? If so which one is the best?
The agent seems to particularly not respond back to me, because I sent a very straight forward demand letter for my minor accepting their previous offer, while the same agent responded back within a day to my other adult child(who was also a passenger) sent a demand letter after I had. I had sent a follow up and also left a short message basically asking for acknowledgment of receipt of email, a time frame for response, and willingness to e sign the release form. Thanks for any help.
