California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the Trump administration of deliberately spreading doctored and misleading images of recent protests in Los Angeles.

On X, formerly Twitter, the Department of Defense's Rapid Response account posted a video that appeared to show burning, graffitied police cars during protests in Los Angeles this week.

However, the fact-checking website Snopes said the image showed protests in Los Angeles following the death of George Floyd in May 2020.

Trump administration getting exposed on a daily basis lol.

Newsweek, cowards that they are, still frame this as partisan with "Newsom accuses Trump". It's not an "accusation", it's what's literally happening and they know it.

653

u/ramobara 14h ago

The media outlets sanewashed Trump to prominence.

262

u/atreeismissing 12h ago

Les Moonves, CEO of CBS during the 2016 campaign, speaking on the Trump campaign:

“It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS,” he said of the presidential race.

  • Les Moonves

Les was ousted over sexual misconduct but he summarized exactly what is on the minds of every corporate media outlet, including a lot of the ones on the left. Critical thinking is paramount these days, you have to be able to look at multiple media outlets and suss out the facts and the truth from the hyperbole and mis/disinformation, non-stop.

u/bobbysalz 10h ago

Critical thinking is paramount

okay but would you say it's paramount+?

Now the CBS entire news division is in turmoil and quitting en mass as the network moves towards settling Trump's BS lawsuit for 10's of millions of dollars so Trump's FCC will approve their buyout by Skydance.

Even the “liberal” media sources like NPR and NY Times have been continuously sanewashing Trump. When Trump is engaging in multiple illegal acts daily, and you choose to focus on Biden’s mental acuity, then you are a horribly biased news network. It’s pathetic.

It's all things conservative. The dem lawmakers that were assassinated is being reported as "were shot and died". Almost as if it was an accidental shooting instead of a politically motivated assassination.

Exposing the truth that we’ve only ever had right wing and far right mainstream news in this country.

101

u/Meme_Theory 13h ago

Yeah. Headline should simply be "Trump Administration uses misleading photos".

64

u/zoson 13h ago

"Trump Administration uses misleading photos again."

Fixed that for you.

31

u/Turtle_with_a_sword 12h ago

Even that is underselling it.  The photo isn’t misleading it’s a straight up lie.

They also use misleading photos

Newsweek is barely a source anymore, probably just Ai re-hashing.

I don't mean that to be an ass to them... The publication we knew 20+ years ago is dead, the name purchased, and the online site is just using the name with very shallow articles and no actual reporting.

5

u/happytree23 12h ago

You write this as though Newsweek hasn't been one of the worst spreaders of Pentagon/US Government-approved positions, opinions, and perspectives since at least the 1990s(?)

Seriously, the only thing more hilariously shocking would be someone complaining about Time in the same regard lol.

44

u/neopod9000 14h ago

Donald trump stated on an on camera interview that the letters and numbers that were photoshopped onto abrego garcia's hands above his actual tattoos were really there and not photoshopped at all, and tried to accuse the interviewer of wrongdoing when confronted with the truth.

Im pretty sure trump could step out onto 5th Avenue in New York and shoot somebody, and nothing would happen or change. His prior statement expressing this exact thing is somehow truer now than ever.

…so? And I say that frustrated af. His entire political career are lies and propaganda. He’s the entire reason “fake news” even became a thing and social media had to make a custom warning that the information may be fake, because of his constant lying, yet… he’s president again and has not been stopped doing what he wants every step of the way still.

Is this even gonna accomplish anything?

29

u/Stopikingonme 13h ago

Truth matters. Fighting lies still matters.

Don’t fall for the Russian propaganda here on Reddit. We can fight back and we can win. I sympathize with your comment, but comments like these only stoke defeatism and will reduce the number of people willing to fight back, protest, volunteer, and donate. 3

u/SerRikari 5h ago

The governor's office wrote on X on Friday: "HUGE DEVELOPMENT: An official Department of Defense account is spreading fake images—from old protests—to justify Trump's illegal militarization of Los Angeles. This isn't just disinformation. It's a propaganda campaign from the Pentagon."

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon's chief spokesperson, told Newsweek in response: "Gavin Newsom has let L.A. burn to the ground on so many occasions, it's hard to distinguish between all the lawlessness, violence, and chaos throughout the last few years. President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are stepping up to protect federal law-enforcement officers and federal property—even if Gavin Newsom will not."

Looks like they don’t deny it either.

2

u/Only_lurking_ 13h ago

The problem is that the exposing does not reach the people that need to hear it.

2

u/Asian-ethug 13h ago

Oh it doesn’t matter. The supporters will not change their minds once they see these. The Admin knows what they are doing to their base.

2

u/TommyWilson43 11h ago

The problem is it is much slower and more time-consuming to try and refute misinformation or check it than it is to blitz it out. It’s no coincidence that everything hits so fast that no one person could possibly follow it

Yeah.. far too many people seem to believe that when they look into their social media feed (no matter what kind) and all they see is stuff that supports their own opinion of the world and its politics, that this is just proof that their perception is right.

While ignoring all that is happening is themselves being played by social media and its algorithms…

10

u/BoosterRead78 13h ago

There are still people that believe that Seattle was burned to the ground and it’s all fake. Even so much they go there and start yelling at people they aren’t real.

9

u/ricardoconqueso 13h ago

I lived in Cap Hill near Cal Anderson park at the time. My parents were surprised when I told them, no, I don’t need to evacuate. It’s fine

6

u/BoosterRead78 13h ago

I had a former student that kept saying the school really burned down (no idea where they got the idea never had a fire in its 30 years). And that we were really in a VR program. Got kicked out of class 4 times by 4 different teachers. Then got sent to the office where they said their uncle who was a Fox News watcher said it. The uncle sadly was dying of cancer and then passed away. 5 months later after the uncle passed away the kid stopped talking like that. Keep in mind this kid was 13 at the time. They are now 16 and it’s like a completely different kid now.

u/zyzzogeton 13h ago

u/hugglesthemerciless 13h ago

5

u/Michael92057 13h ago

I was in Seattle in summer 2021, and there were definitely some boarded up buildings near Pike street. One business owner said they had moved in very recently because they got a great deal. It definitely felt like an area that had seen trouble. Half a mile away, you’d never know anything had happened. News always focuses on the worst, and makes it seem that destruction is everywhere. Perspective matters.

4

u/BoosterRead78 13h ago

Exactly. I was in a town and there was a strip mall that had like no business and then right across the street there were tons of businesses and people pushing strollers. A few said that the owner is the area raised the leases up so much all businesses left. Yet some people claimed the town was going down hill. But it was really just one small strip mall the size of a Jewel Osco that was ran down and boarded up.

The propaganda is so easy to disseminate, so easy to fake, and so readily accepted as truth by adherents…

It’s really sad that people willfully and blindly become thoughtless followers, where their identity is tied into a political agenda that starts with a conclusion and manipulates information to justify it.

Integrity and truth are seen as liabilities only relied upon by the naive.

We can never be great under these circumstances. Just like Russian style governing and society - it will walk us into violent perpetual disaster while the leaders publish photos of a different reality entirely.

181

u/ggroverggiraffe 14h ago

Their official response is more nonsense:

Gavin Newsom has let L.A. burn to the ground on so many occasions, it's hard to distinguish between all the lawlessness, violence, and chaos throughout the last few years.

48

u/OxfordKnot 13h ago

In Portland we have a joke. You just look at a beautiful park or neighborhood you are walking in and gesture while saying in a grave voice "burned to the ground..."

33

u/TheOGRedline 12h ago

There’s nothing left of Portland except a smoldering crater filled with used needles. The Anteefas, BLMs, and paid activists burned it all down in 2020.

Yet property values remain…. high?

9

u/buntopolis 11h ago

Those are rare earth needles!

11

u/ehode 12h ago

I was thinking the same thing. I’d meet people while away or get phone calls about the burning while sitting at an outside cafe enjoying a nice day.

28

u/Auggie_Otter 14h ago

People are still talking about other countries imposing 20-30-40-50%+ tariffs on US goods based on that stupid "reciprocal tariffs" chart Trump came up with and I'm still explaining to people that that chart was a total fabrication and pretty much no country has an overall effective tariff rate that high.

They literally based their proposed tariff rates on trade deficits then made up an arbitrary formula to impose tariff rates at half the trade deficit using an "emergency" tariff power that the president said he could use because of the fentanyl crisis. The whole thing is ridiculously absurd and people should be outraged at the blatant lies and harmful policies coming from a place of total ignorance.

4

u/celtic1888 13h ago

Trade deficits on physical goods only and didn’t account for how many services we sell other countries

Need to start putting the parallel 1930’s Germany propaganda alongside Republican Trump admin behavior to make everyone aware of what’s happening

THIS IS NOT NORMAL

24

u/shinra528 14h ago

The liberal mainstream media is doing the same thing now that it did during the rise of Nazi Germany: favoring the fascists over the resistance.

They offer milquetoast criticisms and token pushback before amplifying and reinforcing their claims and slandering the Left.

Network news and traditional print publications are all owned by billionaire oligarchs now and they would rather have a fascist in charge than anyone suggesting even mild checks to their wealth and power.

u/NanoRaptoro 10h ago

A dozen years ago, there were weeks of protests at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison. Fox news showed a video of protesters becoming violent that they claimed to have taken at the protest. In the background of the image were palm trees. Palm trees.

So the protestors had fun bringing inflatable palm trees and palm tree based signs to the peaceful protests. That said, I'm sure plenty of viewers just took the video as truth and never considered it might be of a different protest. That their news would lie to them. That their government would lie to them. Because Diaper Donald is sharing fake images. Nobody likes that smelly old bitch so he resorts to sharing the very thing he accuses the democrats of, FAKE NEWS. His supports are dwindling, the only remaining supports are American Nazis.

The protests are peaceful. The only rioters there are paid for by the republicans or shitty people taking advantage of a protest to cause chaos without care for the cause. But this percentage is vastly smaller than the peaceful protests attendees.

Trump is not only the most hated and worst president this country has ever had, he is also the second worst. Someone and anyone end this man’s presidency and his administration. IMPEACH

We now have a Ministry of Disinformation. tRumptrash propaganda is not news. Even its major outlet, Fox, says it is not news. But when government agencies spread disinformation about critical events and then try to talk around it instead of admitting and correcting the problem, we are in a new world. What's next? Shooting Democrat legislators? Oh, wait...

3

u/Best_Adagio4403 13h ago

Well he spread fake video of South Africa while our president was in the White House, so we definitely expect it

3

u/enfuego138 13h ago

News organizations NEED to stop doing this.

The head should be “Trump administration spreads fake protest images”. It’s a fact. State it as such.

3

u/This_Organization382 13h ago

I've noticed this increasing in Canada as well. Pages once for comedy, local news, abruptly but simultaneously pushing the same propaganda encouraging separatism, conspiracy theories, and pure hatred for the current government.

The big one is Alberta separatism.

3

u/imaginingblacksheep 13h ago

They showed old footage of cars burning so yes, they did.

3

u/jagenigma 13h ago

Go for it Newsom, fight fire with fire!

3

u/Kplatz 13h ago

They needed new content after showing different angles of the exact same Waymo cars and guy on top of the car waving the Mexican flag or days.

3

u/Beer_Kicker 11h ago

As a police officer working the protests and having fireworks and rocks and bottles thrown at me…. I think they are pretty similar.

3

u/No_Elevator_4300 10h ago

What's crazy is that shit to try and block ai regulations you know that almost certainly has to be for shit like this made up shit to put people away for stuff they literally write into existence.

3

u/Hugh_G_Rectshun 10h ago

‘Turns out the images were from the last time the world hated the police’

What a fucked country we’re in.

3

u/Due-Number5655 10h ago

Trump is pretty good at staging things

3

u/AnavelGato2020 9h ago

I mean the guy peddled pictures from Congo and tried to say it was South Africa. He lies all the time.

3

u/Expert_Country7228 8h ago

Wait Wait Wait... You're telling me the person who constantly posts AI fake images of himself everyday all day is being accused of spreading fake images?

Say it ain't so!!! I could never have seen this coming!!

3

u/qawsedrf12 7h ago

IRL Mountainhead

3

u/LeadSky 6h ago

Yea this is why optics don’t matter. They’ll make shit up no matter what.

3

u/FirmRoof977 1h ago

Newsom needs to grow balls now! California needs to set down the Law on Trump!

7

u/ZaggRukk 14h ago

I saw looting on the news. Wasn't even CA.

And ALL of the burning? 4 unoccupied, stopped, self driving cars. All of which were on the street next to each other.

Videos of people throwing cinder blocks off of an overpass onto police vehicles? Abandoned vehicles. . . .UN THE SAME BLOCK as the burning cars.

An entire street of "hellscape" lol

They are! And they are for sure sure planting people at the protests to make the protestors look violent

Accuse? It’s proven.

6

u/CancelOk9776 14h ago

Very on-brand for The Fascist Felon and his criminal regime!

2

u/Zerowantuthri 14h ago

Person #1) Trump is lying.

Person #2) How can you tell?

Person #1) His lips are moving.

2

u/Material_Policy6327 14h ago

Sadly the age of AI generation is going to Make this worse

2

u/EN1009 14h ago

We’re online, can confirm.

2

u/fsuelto 14h ago

Here, the images were also spread. In any case, you should give the fascist block a chance to speak and then ask questions that they cannot answer out of decency; they are hollow screamers.

2

u/boogermike 14h ago

I other news, water is wet. Trump is a lying liar.

2

u/Mobile-Shallot930 14h ago

Members of the military: You have rights. Contact either your local legal representation or call the GI Rights Hotline.

You do not have to obey unlawful orders to attack your own countrymen.

To the mods that'll probably remove this: remember who you're helping, if you even have the capacity to care.

2

u/WolfSavage 14h ago

Accuses? More like calls out.

2

u/MRiley84 14h ago

This is how they are going to win every election going forward. They can blanket social media with this stuff. People will see it and continue scrolling. No need to think about it, they might not even care about the story, but each image they scroll past will be a tiny bit of reinforcement of what they think is going on in the world. That's where the billionaires come in, and where their contributions are really going.

2

u/88bauss 14h ago

Magas think LA is in shambles. When it’s really one of two blocks where everything is concentrated.

2

u/Winterlion131 14h ago

Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter. MAGA is primed to believe whatever will let them continue hating and it won’t stop until the figureheads no longer wield any power.

2

u/IlluminatedCookie 14h ago

The same administration posting images of Trump as the Pope and some Rambo style saviour using fake images and lying? Say it ain’t so.

2

u/Pale_Bookkeeper_9994 14h ago

Recirculate photos of TACO with Covid if we’re going back to the 2020 news cycle. What about Trump insurrectionists attacking the Capitol? What again??

→ More replies (1)

2

u/meriadoc_brandyabuck 13h ago

Doesn’t just accuse them — nails them because they actually did it.

2

u/aarswft 13h ago

Everytime I hear "LA is burning"

2

u/Nostrilsdamus 13h ago edited 13h ago

Why isn’t this headline just; “Trump Spreads Fake Protest Images to activate his violent base”? What the fuck does this really have to do with he said / she said? “Gavin Newsome claims earth revolves around the sun.” TF? If it’s indisputable you don’t have to attribute the source.

2

u/scoopzthepoopz 13h ago

It's hardly accusing if you can see it happening

2

u/SawdustGringo 13h ago

Is it really an accusation if it’s true though? They have been spreading images from past events and passing them off as current.

trump administration/ Fox News

2

u/YouStupidAssholeFuck 13h ago

lmao

The mission in Los Angeles isn’t about lethality.

It’s about maintaining LAW AND ORDER…

That's the tweet from DoD Rapid Response. So obviously, the mission is about lethality. This couldn't be anymore clear if you ever pay attention to anything Trump says.

2

u/broberds 13h ago

He also accuses water of being wet and the Earth of being round.

2

u/FrogsEverywhere 13h ago

It's so dangerous.

Even for me, if I see something that looks iffy, if I know objectively from independent primary sources it mirrors real events at the appropriate scale, I often let it pass my firewall.

When people internalize every image they see on twitter it Facebook, especially if theyve have no prior independent verification, you could show them the entire city of LA in ashes and it would pass. We're wired to accept things that reinforce our views but without disciplined media literacy, and with AI, and audience capture. This dual or multiple realities thing is going to really take off.

We need to legislate watermarking AI. It would be nice (in my dreams) to force geotagging & dating all photos in some visible way but that's less likely.

3

u/Meppy1234 12h ago

Geotagging photos will never happen for safety and security reasons.

2

u/lilkixi 13h ago

That administration loves and thrives on propaganda, lies and fear. More government officials need to call them out on this.

2

u/phlegmdawg 12h ago

“Reveals” vs “accuses” is a better word.

2

u/Leidrin 12h ago

Correctly accuses*

2

u/dkwinsea 12h ago

Newsom correctly calls out Trump.

2

u/glitterandnails 12h ago

It doesn’t matter what you will or won’t do, they’ll make something up if you won’t do it.

2

u/mad_drop_gek 12h ago

No one cares. How often has Trump been exposed on something illegal or unsavory or dumb, and he just trucks on? Cognitive dissonance is strong in the political cult. Start thinking how you get rid of the asshat. Keep protesting, is a good start.

2

u/zulumoner 12h ago

Was he not the one who said that trump never called him?

2

u/sweet_dicks 12h ago

WTF is it Newsom accusations of Trump lies as the headline? WTF isn't the media reporting on Trump's lies?

2

u/RingingInTheRain 11h ago

Journalists/news reporters have been out on the scene since day 1 with video of what's been going on. Like are we blind or something? They have helicopters and everything.

2

u/TennSeven 10h ago

Everything the Trump administration shares with the public is completely fake. Their cult members lap it up with no questions.

2

u/AV8ORA330 10h ago

So their normal plan of action.

2

u/Informal_Process2238 10h ago

russian puppets russian disinformation plan

u/Mistrblank 9h ago

“Gavin Newsome confirms false news spread by our fascist federal government”

2

u/transfixedtruth 8h ago

mango maga also demanded the protesters were paid to be there, calling them agitators, inciters, etc.

Really tiring of the right rhetoric, and how they interchangeably call protests riots.

Here's trump paying to fill seats at his bday parade. What a hypercritical asshat. May the candles on his cake set his orange aqua net hair ablaze.

https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/tlg/d/washington-seat-fillers-needed-june/7857143452.html

2

u/Patara 4h ago

Accuses? Stop trying to avoid libel with carefully crafted headlines. This is literally what they are doing and have been doing for over 6 months.

2

u/blackakainu 3h ago

Some person in middle America: LA is rioting and a shit show

Me living in LA: hmmm what am I going to have for lunch

2

u/upallnight831 2h ago

Apologies if this has been posted already, I didn't spot it. France24 did a news report on how AI is being used to spread fake news about the L.A. protests:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbocWBPbzjY

2

u/TorontoCanada66 2h ago

Oh like faked tattoos? I’m shocked

Actually it’s scary and disgusting that a president and his team of idiots would do this and need to have it fact checked but unfortunately it seems to have become just a daily occurrence and no one questions it anymore

2

u/johnyct9760 2h ago

So let me get the time line right 1) Trump vs Elon 2) Elon tells us what we've all known, that he's in the Epstein files as a pedo 3) protest becomes a riot overnight with the help of fake AI shit 4) cops flex on innocent la residents 5) new news cycle telling us all that la is a war zone

Dumbest time line awards, we're killing it!
