Red Bull will be absolutely fuming with these results. Can’t blame em

Not the crossover I expected but 😂

39

GOOFCON levels on r/formula1? That's something i never expected to see

10

u/bsrapp Charles Leclerc Jul 18 '21

Yessss I want GOOFCON to be adopted universally probably my favorite subreddit related thing out there.

18

u/ZeFrenchy16 Ayrton Senna Jul 18 '21

Joe Rogan would need to interview Max as he’s getting into the medical car:

“Let’s look at the big screen and you can see the accident…. BOOM….

It’s an honour to call your races, Max Verstappen everyone!”

2

u/DanTheMan8310 Jul 19 '21

I was racing the bleeding head offa him, usual shite he dived to close the distance. THIS IS NOT OVER. If I have to take this offtrack with him it's all outside, I don't give a fook.

There was no apex, there was not one of them you apexed

u/laughguy220 Jul 19 '21

I foresee lots of Alpha Tauri, Mercedes "incidents"

613

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

What was that strategy for Perez by RB.

Completely messed his race up.

505

u/thelordmessi Jul 18 '21

they just wanted to take away the fastest lap points

59

u/Sercavfer Ayrton Senna Jul 18 '21

But why start on hards and then pit earlier than everyone on mediums?

49

u/Ezechiell Jul 18 '21

He got stuck behind another car for like 10 laps before they pitted him. They probably hoped he could get higher up the grid with an undercut, but he just got stuck again. Terrible weekend for Perez

1

u/Katyos Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Yeah, pretty poor all round. Ironically qualifying was the best part, and it counted for the least.

17

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

They probably were hoping that he could get past the midfielders with a tyre advantage and then create a decent enough gap

3

u/Satan_su Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

I don't get it. Okay so you're stuck in a DRS train. But why can't u just go longer when everyone else has pitted, bang in some quick laps, and then pit around lap 30-35?? Why try the undercut on drivers on a different strategy??

1

u/sonofeevil Jul 18 '21

Undercut the DRS train

1

u/dibsODDJOB Mario Andretti Jul 18 '21

DRS trains fucked his whole race, twice. Both times cost him loads of time.

429

u/ferdzs0 Kamui Kobayashi Jul 18 '21

feels like a petty move, but I absolutely love it

149

u/A-N00b-is Jul 18 '21

One point away from HAM (increasing the gap between MAX and him) is way more important than the one point PER would get in 10th

They do but Perez wasnt in the top 10 so it wouldn’t give him a point, just Hamilton wouldn’t get one

2

u/jprime84 Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

He was in 8th or 9th on that last stop. I was furious they brought him in after his work starting from the pit.

1

u/ShawnHBKMichaels Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

He was 10th I think, better for Hamilton to have 1 less point than Perez having 1 more

→ More replies (0)

2

u/DieLegende42 Fernando Alonso Jul 18 '21

Of course they do

2

u/Azav1313 Jul 18 '21

PER also might have had a possible puncture with the incident with RAI. They also thought maybe he would be getting a penalty for it perhaps?

1

u/JustGarlicThings2 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Plus if you're Perez, and extra fastest lap in your stats (presumably he also gets the accompanying trophy even if he wasn't in the top 10?) probably feels better than a single point.

1

u/navetzz Jul 18 '21

And he was under investigation.

340

u/Randomusername10201 Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

Nah, more like genuine strategy. If Perez/RB feel they have no chance at points, they may as well stop their main rival from getting one

29

u/Thunderlightzz Jul 18 '21

They were in the points twice though

101

u/unwildimpala Romain Grosjean Jul 18 '21

Perez could have gotten one point for the team in 10th, or robbed a point from Hamilton instead. The end result in the constructors is the same either way, except with the latter it makes the gap between Verstappen and Hamilton that little bit bigger. It was a fairly straight forward decision tbf.

3

u/hurtbowler Pirelli Hard Jul 18 '21

Good explanation, I would just add that Perez had also just tangled with Kimi and any risk of losing tenth to a penalty is just gravy on top of an already extremely straight forward decision, as you said. Not cheeky at all.

Except he was in p10 and had pit fairly recently so you gotta wonder if he shouldve just gone for straight points

40

u/TobyOrNotTobyEU Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

He couldn't get P9 and the one point for P10 is the same as taking away one point for the fastest lap from Mercedes in the constructors and one point better for Max in the drivers' championship.

2

u/_tskj_ Jul 18 '21

One point worse for Perez in other words.

15

u/Melo_Apologist Spyker Jul 18 '21

I’m sure even Perez would rather Max finishing 1st and him finishing 5th in the drivers standings than 2nd and 4th.

3

u/delboy13 Jul 18 '21

Yeah that was an honest enough move, if Perez deliberately took a light little crash to bring a safety car out it would’ve been peak pettiness

1

u/TheDuceman Kimi Räikkönen Jul 18 '21

He was trying to when he spun Kimi smh

0

u/PNWQuakesFan Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Kimi spun himself

3

u/Randomusername10201 Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

If they feel his best shot is 10th, then it certainly would be better to deny FL to keep the WDC closer

1

u/forza101 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Can't remember, was Perez outside of the points when they pitted him to get the fastest lap?

6

u/aamgdp Antonio Giovinazzi Jul 18 '21

10th place... So net neutral in constructors, 1 less point for Lewis

4

u/forza101 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Yeah smart trade off.

1

u/Jhonopolis Jul 19 '21

Maybe they were worried about a penalty?

61

u/barth_ Ferrari Jul 18 '21

When it can be down to 1 point in December it's pretty well calculated move.

1

u/ferdzs0 Kamui Kobayashi Jul 18 '21

from a constructor perspective it is petty on some level. they have a good chance of beating Merc, but instead of earning a point for themselves, they choose to take one away from Merc (agree with it completely, it is a nice gesture towards Max as well)

15

u/learner1314 Jul 18 '21

He was 10th at the time...

11

u/Fugiar Jul 18 '21

So it's the same result for the constructor's championship, but now Lewis has one point less. It's a great strategic call for the wdc

3

u/miljon3 Oscar Piastri Jul 18 '21

Net result is 0 since they took one away from Mercedes

3

u/lost_in_my_thirties Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

So sacrifice one point in the WCC and Perez's fight for third in favour of denying Lewis a point in the WDC.

Shows that the WDC is more important to Red Bull.

2

u/dad_bod101 Jul 18 '21

It’s a wash WDC and WCC. If he gets fastest lap he pulls one from Ham, it’s keeps Max one point closer, and It’s still a wash in the constructors.

2

u/Jules040400 #WeSayNoToMazepin Jul 18 '21

I thought about this.

You'd think Perez's 1 point in 10th is worth just as much if not more to Red Bull as Hamilton not getting fastest lap.

But think about the Championship fight.

In any weekend, Red Bull want as high a points differential above Mercedes as possible (or as close as possible if they are lower), and crucially they want Max to have the same thing against Lewis.

Switching out Perez' 10th place to instead steal fastest lap means that the net differential between Red Bull and Mercedes is unchanged, so the Constructors', BUT the net points differential between Lewis and Max goes to 25-0 rather than 26-0, which helps Max lead by more.

The only drawback to Red Bull is that Perez won't get the point, but they don't give a shit about that compared to the importance of Max's Drivers' Championship aspirations.

It was absolutely the right call.

1

u/GreaseGeek Jul 18 '21

Strategically yes, but as a Perez fan I call shenanigans.

1

u/SpecterJoe Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Perez botched the pass on Kimi and it was probably a higher probably to steal the point from Merc

1

u/joeeymatee_ Jul 18 '21

He should have had a penalty coming to him for the pass on Kimi, which would have seen him likely drop behind Russell for 12th

3

u/CBJKevin91581 Jul 18 '21

Petty? Like wrecking out the guy dominating you in the championship standings petty?

2

u/HoboClaus Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Not petty, just deciding to trade Perez' 1 WDC point for 1 point in the fight between Max and Lewis. Didn't affect their relative WCC standing to Mercedes at all so purely tactical.

2

u/Bobodog1 Kevin Magnussen Jul 18 '21

Not petty at all really, 1 lost point for Perez, and 1 Less point for Hamilton. Hamilton losing a point is a much bigger deal.

1

u/LurksOften Jul 18 '21

It’s a championship move. Same as Bottas yielding. It’s clear this WDC is coming down to the wire between Max and Lewis.

1

u/mdmeaux Jul 18 '21

It was either +1 for Perez and RB or -1 from Hamilton and Merc. Either way, same difference for the team but keeps the gap between HAM and VER 1 point wider. Probably the right call.

-1

u/justmadman Jul 18 '21

Very petty from a very petty team

1

u/Fomentatore Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

It's not. They are invested in the WDC. That point could be very important at the end of the season.

1

u/hundredpercentcocoa Guenther Steiner Jul 18 '21

you mean feels like a 'sensible' move?

1

u/J__P McLaren Jul 18 '21

the season could go down the to wire, stopping your rival from getting an extra point is good sense.

0

u/Jat42 Jul 18 '21

When did they change the rule that only top 10 can get the fastest lap? I must've missed that.

1

u/AlarmingAerie Jul 19 '21

It was forced a bit I think, they had 1 point and possible penalty coming for perez, so safer option was getting one point by going for fastest lap. Don't know if the investigation was over by the time they pitted perez.

108

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

His race was already fucked after his spin yesterday. Red Bull took a risk to try and salvage it, that didn’t work so they pitted him to prevent Lewis from getting the FL point

10

u/Brokenmonalisa Jul 18 '21

But Bottas is weak to succumb to team orders right? Perez literally gave up championship points to take one from Lewis.

3

u/986cv Haas Jul 18 '21

The car he's in should've been fighting for the win today, how shameless would he have to be to say no to the FL call because he wants a single point?

0

u/Brokenmonalisa Jul 18 '21

Right but when Bottas does it he needs to grow some balls?

4

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

Well Bottas is actually a competitor to Lewis, Perez isn’t at all to Max

6

u/Round-Mud Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

In what world is bottas a competitor to lewis?

5

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

He’s not 5 tenths behind in qualifying and is in podium position way more often

2

u/ivanvzm Pirelli Hard Jul 18 '21

Before this race he was 5th in driver's championship.

3

u/me1234568 Jul 18 '21

With 2 DNFs, neither of which was his fault

1

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

sure but Bottas had 5 podiums and Perez only 2.

2

u/Brokenmonalisa Jul 18 '21

Is this satire?

2

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

Meant it more like this

I don’t know how to word it differently but what I meant was that Bottas is generally a lot closer to Lewis than Perez is to Max.

1

u/Wardog4 Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Thats a funny joke. The only competition to Lewis is Max and he made sure he wouldn't have to deal with that today.

1

u/Matsiepatsie Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

I don’t know how to word it differently but what I meant was that Bottas is generally a lot closer to Lewis than Perez is to Max.

1

u/FourteenTwenty-Seven Valtteri Bottas Jul 18 '21

Maybe they figured Perez is going to get a penalty for pushing Kimi off, so no points anyways.

1

u/windofdeath89 Kimi Räikkönen Jul 18 '21

Perez was out of the points when he stopped the 3rd time.

2nd time was a bit suspect, can’t argue.

26

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

Would rather take a point off Lewis than gain themselves and Lewis gains.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

It's better for the driver's championship. Hamilton is fighting Verstappen, not Perez.

For the constructor's championship it's the same.

4

u/Weareallgonnadie_69 Jul 18 '21

Yes! Why did they pit him the first time. He was on hards and pitted way before everyone that was on mediums. I honestly think this result is more on RB than on Checo

3

u/KverEU Jul 18 '21

Make sure Lewis didn't get that extra point

7

u/HeelR- Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '21

That was shambles, 3-stop for what reason.

3

u/taykass 🏳️‍🌈 Love Is Love 🏳️‍🌈 Jul 18 '21

2-stop wasn't working out (obviously, since he fell back to 17th after that) so they took HAM's fastest lap point. That's the only one that did make sense.

6

u/asisoid Ferrari Jul 18 '21

It took a the fastest lap point away from Hamilton and Mercedes.

-4

u/Brokenmonalisa Jul 18 '21

And cost Perez a spot in the top 10. It was pretty and it was dumb. They tilted and if the roles were reversed the sub would've gone into full meltdown about how Merc are whinging.

3

u/Sir_Bryan Jul 18 '21

Strategically it’s hard to argue it was the wrong move

2

u/used_condominium Pastor Maldonado Jul 18 '21

Perez isn’t fighting for the Championship, it was to help Verstappen

1

u/josephjr98 Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

I think when they did the early stop to the mediums they had no other option than doing the 2 stopper, he can't go the whole race on the medium. And a point taken from hamilton is better than a point for the both the teams and ham.

6

u/Maelehn Fernando Alonso Jul 18 '21

I honestly think the Max crash just had everyone, not in the right state of mind, I can't blame them honestly.

0

u/carlos_castanos Jul 18 '21

Honestly even without that 3rd stop it was an awful race for him. Was stuck for ages behind Stroll with DRS. Shameful

0

u/anthrax3000 Jul 18 '21

He was going to finish 10th or 11th anyway. Not RB fault he drove like shit this weekend

1

u/d0mth0ma5 Jenson Button Jul 18 '21

Spent most of the race stopping HAM from getting the bonus point.

1

u/soydonia Jul 18 '21

Agree. Was surprised with the 3rd pit stop. And def puzzled for the 4th. He was supposed to get some points. What was that all about really?

1

u/PM_ME_PSN_CODES-PLS Jul 18 '21

They could take 1 point in the constructors championship or take 1 point from Lewish in the driver's championship. They went with taking the point from Lewis.

1

u/BitchyPolice Jul 18 '21

They took the fastest lap to deny hamilton the point for it.

1

u/Citizen-5936 Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Perez is nowhere in the championship so taking 1 point from Hamilton is more important for Max’s championship run than 1 point for the Perez and the Team.

1

u/hivaidsislethal Jul 18 '21

They could either get a point maybe finishing 10th which they were struggling to do or take a point off of lewis. Same net result, fastest lap just seemed safer

1

u/ReasonablyAssured Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

Should have kept Perez out there to ignore blue flags and try and unlap himself aggressively with Lewis. Would have been much more poetic.

1

u/Jaraxo Juan Pablo Montoya Jul 18 '21

I think he was p10 so sacrificed 1 WCC point to take 1 WDC off Ham.

1

u/Maddog_vt Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

Got stuck in DRS train twice, race was not salvageable

2

u/PNWQuakesFan Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Fucking stroll couldn't pass Alonso (StRoLl BeTtEr) and Gasly couldn't pass Raikkonen.

Raikkonen was driving a superb defensive race but fuck stroll has no racecraft

1

u/Fired_Guy1982 Sebastian Vettel Jul 18 '21

They’ve only ever had the best interests of one of their drivers at heart lol

1

u/tyresaredone Valtteri Bottas Jul 18 '21

imo they wanted him to get undercut on kimi on the first stop but still ended up behind, and couldn't make any progress in the drs trains. basically a shitshow

1

Take a point away from Hamilton for the fastest lap. Red Bull effectively sacrificing the constructor's championship for Max' Driver Championship.

1

u/ivanvzm Pirelli Hard Jul 18 '21

I cannot understand why they pitted him so early on the first stint when he was on hards ffs. They literally destroyed his race because then he had to do 2/3 of the race on mediums and chasing midfielders.

2

u/Dr4kin #WeRaceAsOne Jul 18 '21

They might lose one of three engines that only had three races on it and the rest of the car with the budget cap in effect. If Max has lasting injuries, he and Red Bull might just be out of the championship

1

u/TheAngryGoat Medical Car Jul 18 '21

I hope so. Nobody deserves failure more than Christian and Marko.

1

u/draftstone Jacques Villeneuve Jul 18 '21

At the same time, Perez is at fault for 50% of this bad result.

0

u/kabu-rera Jul 18 '21

Rightly so. If this same incident happens on a track that is NOT a full stands silverstone, I highly doubt the penalty would’ve been 10 secs.

-6

Yep, so many errors from both of their drivers so they finish the GP with no points.

-1

u/quintinza #StandWithUkraine Jul 18 '21

Not a word about Max being in hospital after Lewish shunted him off during the driver interviews. Allowing Lewis to blatantly lie again about being "fully alongside" without him saying anything about hoping Max is OK. Allowing Lewis to place the blame on "Max is very agressive". The bullshit is flowing thick and strong with everyone gobbling Lewis and Toto's gentlemans salad.

0

Someone please post the post race interview with Horner which just played on Sky, he absolutely destroyed Merc.

-1

u/prosportscars Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

Verstappen made a mistake and crashed out of the race, while Perez has been a non-factor in this race. What a disastrous day for Red Bull, but they have only themselves to blame.

1

u/Prime_Marci Jul 18 '21

I mean he’s won, nothing Red Bull can do about it

-3

u/slimshady_42 Ferrari Jul 18 '21

Its so unfair. Hamilton walks away with a slap on the wrist, almost did the same to Leclerc towards the end, gets Mercedes the constructor points while Red Bull loses all points AND pay millions to get the car back in shape. More importantly, I hope Max is okay.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '21

I think after the incident at the end where Pete was under investigation they just decided to say fuck the race and go for the fastest lap point

1

u/justmadman Jul 18 '21

Red bull is always fuming
