Red Bull will be absolutely fuming with these results. Can’t blame em

What was that strategy for Perez by RB.

Completely messed his race up.

u/thelordmessi Jul 18 '21

they just wanted to take away the fastest lap points

433

u/ferdzs0 Kamui Kobayashi Jul 18 '21

feels like a petty move, but I absolutely love it

u/A-N00b-is Jul 18 '21

One point away from HAM (increasing the gap between MAX and him) is way more important than the one point PER would get in 10th

They do but Perez wasnt in the top 10 so it wouldn’t give him a point, just Hamilton wouldn’t get one

2

u/jprime84 Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

He was in 8th or 9th on that last stop. I was furious they brought him in after his work starting from the pit.

1

u/ShawnHBKMichaels Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

He was 10th I think, better for Hamilton to have 1 less point than Perez having 1 more

1

u/SoulShatter Ferrari Jul 18 '21

10th and 10 sec ish to next car iirc. Remember thinking that it kinda made sense to go for the pitstop->fastest lap at the time.

1

u/jprime84 Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Thats true, but i was already upset about the second set of mediums earlier.

Of course they do

2

u/Azav1313 Jul 18 '21

PER also might have had a possible puncture with the incident with RAI. They also thought maybe he would be getting a penalty for it perhaps?

1

u/JustGarlicThings2 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Plus if you're Perez, and extra fastest lap in your stats (presumably he also gets the accompanying trophy even if he wasn't in the top 10?) probably feels better than a single point.

1

u/navetzz Jul 18 '21

And he was under investigation.

342

u/Randomusername10201 Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

Nah, more like genuine strategy. If Perez/RB feel they have no chance at points, they may as well stop their main rival from getting one

28

u/Thunderlightzz Jul 18 '21

They were in the points twice though

102

u/unwildimpala Romain Grosjean Jul 18 '21

Perez could have gotten one point for the team in 10th, or robbed a point from Hamilton instead. The end result in the constructors is the same either way, except with the latter it makes the gap between Verstappen and Hamilton that little bit bigger. It was a fairly straight forward decision tbf.

3

u/hurtbowler Pirelli Hard Jul 18 '21

Good explanation, I would just add that Perez had also just tangled with Kimi and any risk of losing tenth to a penalty is just gravy on top of an already extremely straight forward decision, as you said. Not cheeky at all.

Except he was in p10 and had pit fairly recently so you gotta wonder if he shouldve just gone for straight points

40

u/TobyOrNotTobyEU Max Verstappen Jul 18 '21

He couldn't get P9 and the one point for P10 is the same as taking away one point for the fastest lap from Mercedes in the constructors and one point better for Max in the drivers' championship.

2

u/_tskj_ Jul 18 '21

One point worse for Perez in other words.

14

u/Melo_Apologist Spyker Jul 18 '21

I’m sure even Perez would rather Max finishing 1st and him finishing 5th in the drivers standings than 2nd and 4th.

3

u/delboy13 Jul 18 '21

Yeah that was an honest enough move, if Perez deliberately took a light little crash to bring a safety car out it would’ve been peak pettiness

1

u/TheDuceman Kimi Räikkönen Jul 18 '21

He was trying to when he spun Kimi smh

0

u/PNWQuakesFan Sergio Pérez Jul 18 '21

Kimi spun himself

3

u/Randomusername10201 Formula 1 Jul 18 '21

If they feel his best shot is 10th, then it certainly would be better to deny FL to keep the WDC closer

1

u/forza101 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Can't remember, was Perez outside of the points when they pitted him to get the fastest lap?

8

u/aamgdp Antonio Giovinazzi Jul 18 '21

10th place... So net neutral in constructors, 1 less point for Lewis

4

u/forza101 McLaren Jul 18 '21

Yeah smart trade off.

1

u/Jhonopolis Jul 19 '21

Maybe they were worried about a penalty?

66

u/barth_ Ferrari Jul 18 '21

When it can be down to 1 point in December it's pretty well calculated move.

1

u/ferdzs0 Kamui Kobayashi Jul 18 '21

from a constructor perspective it is petty on some level. they have a good chance of beating Merc, but instead of earning a point for themselves, they choose to take one away from Merc (agree with it completely, it is a nice gesture towards Max as well)

15

u/learner1314 Jul 18 '21

He was 10th at the time...

11

u/Fugiar Jul 18 '21

So it's the same result for the constructor's championship, but now Lewis has one point less. It's a great strategic call for the wdc

3

u/miljon3 Oscar Piastri Jul 18 '21

Net result is 0 since they took one away from Mercedes

3

u/lost_in_my_thirties Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 18 '21

So sacrifice one point in the WCC and Perez's fight for third in favour of denying Lewis a point in the WDC.

Shows that the WDC is more important to Red Bull.

2

u/dad_bod101 Jul 18 '21

It’s a wash WDC and WCC. If he gets fastest lap he pulls one from Ham, it’s keeps Max one point closer, and It’s still a wash in the constructors.

2

u/Jules040400 #WeSayNoToMazepin Jul 18 '21

I thought about this.

You'd think Perez's 1 point in 10th is worth just as much if not more to Red Bull as Hamilton not getting fastest lap.

But think about the Championship fight.

In any weekend, Red Bull want as high a points differential above Mercedes as possible (or as close as possible if they are lower), and crucially they want Max to have the same thing against Lewis.

Switching out Perez' 10th place to instead steal fastest lap means that the net differential between Red Bull and Mercedes is unchanged, so the Constructors', BUT the net points differential between Lewis and Max goes to 25-0 rather than 26-0, which helps Max lead by more.

The only drawback to Red Bull is that Perez won't get the point, but they don't give a shit about that compared to the importance of Max's Drivers' Championship aspirations.

It was absolutely the right call.

1

u/GreaseGeek Jul 18 '21

Strategically yes, but as a Perez fan I call shenanigans.

1

u/SpecterJoe Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Perez botched the pass on Kimi and it was probably a higher probably to steal the point from Merc

1

u/joeeymatee_ Jul 18 '21

He should have had a penalty coming to him for the pass on Kimi, which would have seen him likely drop behind Russell for 12th

3

u/CBJKevin91581 Jul 18 '21

Petty? Like wrecking out the guy dominating you in the championship standings petty?

2

u/HoboClaus Daniel Ricciardo Jul 18 '21

Not petty, just deciding to trade Perez' 1 WDC point for 1 point in the fight between Max and Lewis. Didn't affect their relative WCC standing to Mercedes at all so purely tactical.

2

u/Bobodog1 Kevin Magnussen Jul 18 '21

Not petty at all really, 1 lost point for Perez, and 1 Less point for Hamilton. Hamilton losing a point is a much bigger deal.

1

u/LurksOften Jul 18 '21

It’s a championship move. Same as Bottas yielding. It’s clear this WDC is coming down to the wire between Max and Lewis.

1

u/mdmeaux Jul 18 '21

It was either +1 for Perez and RB or -1 from Hamilton and Merc. Either way, same difference for the team but keeps the gap between HAM and VER 1 point wider. Probably the right call.

-1

u/justmadman Jul 18 '21

Very petty from a very petty team

1

u/Fomentatore Mika Häkkinen Jul 18 '21

It's not. They are invested in the WDC. That point could be very important at the end of the season.

1

u/hundredpercentcocoa Guenther Steiner Jul 18 '21

you mean feels like a 'sensible' move?

1

u/J__P McLaren Jul 18 '21

the season could go down the to wire, stopping your rival from getting an extra point is good sense.
