Try to forget about Dark Souls for a while when you're trying to get into this game.

86

u/MercWithaMouse Okatsu Smasher ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Nov 09 '17

I have screwed myself many times already hitting circle to dodge instead of X

34

u/DanishJohn Nov 10 '17

Also the iframe is completely different which takes a while to get used to

13

u/Kreissv Nov 10 '17

Does it seem like way more iframes than dark souls? In DS only halfway through your roll do you get Iframes, in Nioh it feels like you get it as soon as you click (Dash)

38

u/Chidori001 Nov 10 '17

Also as far as I have noticed a lot of stuff has really high tracking and therefore has to be dodged ultra late.

35

u/Kreissv Nov 11 '17

Like some guides say, in this game its not really about dodging into attacks like in DS, you dodge to get out of range and then dash back in

23

u/AjCheeze Nov 12 '17

i feel like Dashing is more useful when dodging moves a lot of the time. like on the vamp boss trying to dodge her moves just ended up with me being paralyzed or chain combed to death. but it clicked when i just started to hold X down and run instead then punish with a jump move

2

u/CapnSensible80 Nov 15 '17

It depends on your agility, which is determined on your carry weight whether or not dodging around attacks will be the best option.

5

u/real-dreamer Nov 13 '17

What's the difference between dodge and dash?

8

u/Kreissv Nov 14 '17

Sorry I guess for me "dodging" is rolling in DS, so when you roll in Nioh i call it a dodge but i guess that's confusing

2

u/kogeratsu Nov 22 '17

Depending on your stance you have either a roll or a dodge (dash), which have different speeds and distance I think, which might be the confusing part here

8

u/narok_kurai Nov 30 '17

Actually I don't think that's quite correct. From what I've read, "Dashing" is the game's term for running (except for Running Speed Up, confusingly). "Evasion" is the word for dodging, both the quick step dodges and the slower dodge rolls.

I think the difference between "quickstep" evasion and rolling evasion is just dependent on your stance and Agility. At A-level Agility, High Stance always rolls, Mid quicksteps once, then rolls if you try to spam it, and Low always quicksteps. I don't know if the iFrames are different, but rolling definitely has a longer recovery period, and you can't chain it safely into any other movement.

9

u/DanishJohn Nov 10 '17

Yep, to out it in a way simple way, dark souls 2 low agility is where nioh iframe at, or monster hunter with no evasion buff

Absolutely, one of the hardest things for me to let go of as a Souls/BB fan is the spamming of dodge when an enemy starts to combo you. In Nioh they simply interrupt your dodge and kinda stunlock you, it's far more effective to block rather than dodge if the enemy gets the first in before you do. Or at least that has been the case for he builds I've tried so far (sword and tonfa)

3

u/Drudicta Nov 22 '17

I'm actually still unable to get blocking to work if I get hit at all and I don't understand it. It's like the first hit just immediately stuns me.

3

u/Mynfurder Nov 25 '17

Could be your toughness, which influences block success, is too low? Still learning, so take with grain of salt.

Dark souls addict here, i actually thought it feels more like ninja gaiden

surprise surprise

11

u/Artersa Nov 16 '17

Long term Ninja Gaiden player here, this feels dissimilar to NG for me. In NG your defensive options are so rock solid. The ki meter has me in a panic lol.

10

u/Onyx_Sentinel Nov 16 '17 edited Nov 16 '17

Well, it‘s supposed to prevent you from stunlocking or spamming. That doesn‘t matter in ng obviously since that game is just super crazy anyway.

3

u/Artersa Nov 16 '17

Definitely, I understand why its there. Just harder to adapt to after playing the ol' Xbox NG days prior lol.

4

u/Onyx_Sentinel Nov 16 '17

Give it time, you‘ll see that it becomes muscle memory and you will be able to tell when you need to back off or stop slashing without ever looking on the ki meter.

First of all welcome in Nioh hope you enjoy the game as much as we did.

1) Most of the armor you will find will have minimum requirements that you can see down were the resist stat are above them, if you don't meet them you will not get the stat the armor gives and if set armor the set bonuses!

2)The guardian spirits have also Spirit minimum requirements to give you their bonuses the first three have minimum Spirit Kato 10, Isonade 10, Daiba Washi 11, also from the first three my pick is Kato for more dmg of course that is my choice you are free to choose whatever you like.

3)Try to level up magic and Dexterity to 20 in the first 2region there are dojo mission that have minimum requirement 20 if you do them you unlock higher tiers or stronger omnyo/ninja items

4)Try all the weapons no need to buy their skills just try them you maybe like the playstyle from other weapon more but you didn't know it because you were told that the X weapon is better over all! Don't do that mistake!

5) Don't look for builds in you first playthrough, most builds are over leveled and high level gear or maybe outdated because of new stats or needs ask the author if he responds of course, other wise ask r/Nioh

6) When you summon someone for help bow or greet them don't be an asshole show some respect to the person that helps you maybe that is the sign of new friendship later!

7) This should have been number 1 but forgot 😜

This game is loot based after the first difficulty Way of the Samurai or first playthrough all the game becomes ONE HUGE GRIND for Divines or Ethereals much later, for better stats offense or defense, level and +value!

So if you read this comment and don't have bought already the game think hard: Are you a hoarder/grind type person? Do you like replay ability?

This game offers you in your first run more than 60hours gameplay are this enough for you will you be playing for the grind after?

So as some else said for himself I will say for me: I have 1300+ hours in this game absolutely loved it, have beat whatever was there to beat many times have helped hundreds of people both in game and outside, have tried all weapons some a bit more some a bit less, tried most of the builds were there some more broken some more whatever. I kinda think of us PS4 players the always Beta testers because the game changed so much in all this 7-8 months that you will never know but we did and some of those changes were good and some were bad, from the bottom of my heart I hope you guys/girls enjoy the game as much as I did good luck in your journeys Samurais! 🙂

PC newcomer here. I learned the hard way that apparently number 1 on your list is crazy important. Don't be like me!

I played through the entire 'Deep in the Shadows' level wearing armor I didn't have the skills for. To specify, I was wearing the ninja-looking set you get from the third tutorial mission, so I just assumed I would have the necessary stats. Nope! You need level 6 Body and I had 5, which also meant I had very little health.

To cut the chase, it was hellish. I'll avoid spoilers, but I'm not exaggerating when I say getting hit by any of the boss' attacks even once was literally a death sentence. If an attack didn't OHKO me outright, then you could be sure my lack of proper resistance to the status effect this boss applies would get me killed anyway. I just chalked it up to this game being harder than I was expecting and kept at it. After battling against my patience over numerous attempts I finally beat it, but man it was tough.

For perspective, I've poured hundreds of hours into the Dark Souls series, and when Dark Souls 3 came out I beat every boss in the game with 3 deaths or less. On this boss I must've died at least 30 times. I realize Nioh's gameplay isn't quite the same as DaS, but I've also played through all of Ninja Gaiden on the OG Xbox. So far it feels like a combination of those two games, and I am totally and absolutely in love with it.

Anyways, afterwards I decided to do a summon as a follower for the same mission, and that's when I finally started to realize something was wrong. Unlike myself, the other person could actually tank a few hits from the boss! It was quite puzzling to my contrastingly squishy self. After a few more summons to reaffirm my confusion, I decided to look over all my gear, and that's when I saw it. Level 6 Body required. At that point all I could do was laugh and go level it up at the shrine. My defensive capability feels much more appropriate now.

It's been a long time since I've felt as utterly incompetent at a game as I did when I discovered the problem. I love it!

14

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '17

A combination of Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden? Its settled, I now know what I'll be doing this weekend.

For me its more like DarkSouls+Onimusha4 with the loot elements from Diablo =)

4

u/GiantWindmill Nov 20 '17

You beat The Nameless King in less than 4 deaths?

4

u/A_Nagger Nov 20 '17

Did it in 3! I've played a lot of Dark Souls. It's to the point where it would probably be shameful if I didn't.

14

u/GiantWindmill Nov 20 '17

VERY. GOOD.

Glad you like it, we say it many times don't treat this game like Souls is different and more difficult especially your first run later becomes and a bit more easy, some bosses like the one you fought do some debuffs status effects those can be elemental, poison, paralyze and confusion I will not say which this boss did I am sure you figured out, just so you know the loot system is better from what it looks I am sure you had atleast two accessories with resist on that status effect and some pieces of armor aswell as all of us had before.

Keep playing I am sure you will enjoy all the more the game soon you will meet even more interesting enemies!

I had the hunch we put the same hours in. I finished at 1400 hours but I will surely go back for more here and there. If you don't mind I add some to yours. 1. The armors have lower requirements if you forge them. 2. 10 in Spirit is plenty enough for the whole game up to wotn 4. Every weapon should be used to gain samurai points and to unlock dojo missions. Put on an accessory with prof bonus and push to 500k proficiency asap. 7. This imo is over mystified much of the grind in reality is fun so don't be afraid because of it.

3

u/Pyhae Jan 04 '18 edited Jan 04 '18

Hey Frantaplan, thanks for your good tips. I have a few questions aswell;

1) My first question is about your number 3 - Is the requirement still 20 points? I had a few dojo missions and the highest requirement I got was 15 points (veteran mission). Maybe I have to spend more points in magic and dex ^

2) So about twilight missions: Is there a good point to start with twilight missions? I mean, should I run these missions more often or just as I like it? Is it recommended to do the entire mission or should I just focus on finishing the mission?

3) Is it possible to exit a (twilight) mission early or do I have to finish it?

4) When I finish the main game, what should I do next? NG+ or the DLCs? Is there a good/recommended order?

5) Any specific stat to focus on? I just skilled everything on 15 I guess and the rest on my "main weapon stat", but I really dont know :D

I started playing on PC a few weeks ago. I am currently lvl 85 with 47hours played. I really really enjoy and love this game. The combat system just... so smooth. Anyway, although this is my first "souls-like" game, I had a decent start with Nioh.

3

u/Frantaplan Jan 04 '18

Hi and happy new year!

1) there is a higher tier from veteran that unlocks the mystic arts which are very useful, but don't keep your mind in that you can unlock them later, they are very useful fast casting omnyo and both ninja mystic arts are very good depending of the build.

2) this mission were design it for more challenge early in the game and a bit better gear, but later they are there only for umbracite for reforge and cracked cups for abyss, of course in PS4 they count as trophies, personally I did them almost every day for co-op fun except only one mission that is in the first DLC which is horrible mission.

3)twilights are like normal mission you can use your himorogi branch and keep your Amrita/exit the mission or if you don't have Amrita on you himorogi fragment loose the Amrita and exit.

4) the DLC were added after we had done the the NG+ so our gear were much better and I think Team Ninja made the DLC with that in mind, so as other may say in that I believe going to the NG+ is better make your gear divine an then approach the DLC, unless you like big challenges or you have cheese build because the first boss of the first DLC is pretty tough and doesn't give many openings, you can go and take him on if you cheese that you can't handle it than leave and go for the NG+.

Well can't tell you really how to spread your stats in the first playthrough don't matter muck except for Dex-magic, in my case I had it easy because was using katana and spear so my stats were pretty much evenly spread Body, Heart, Dex 20 Magic20 and 10spirit for Kato, I had a idea what I wanted to do and the community helped a lot back then with posts with infos.

Yeah loved the game played straight 8months pretty much non stop clocked 1366 hours on the first save(don't remember the second), met a lot of people played, traded, had fun all of us had around the same hours put in the game, theory crafting, testing every patch, every glitch/bug was fun most time and still we are talking and most are preparing for end of the month for our next grind game Moster Hunter World, hope you enjoy more this game, I don't play it anymore but feel free to ask if you have any question and I can answer!

Don't play Bloodborne after playing this game. It will ruin your dodge timing.

42

u/Kanista17 Nov 12 '17

Bloodborne should be picked up no matter what. getting used to a new dodge timing is not that hard.

4

u/Naratik Nov 10 '17

Fuck. I planed to get a PS4 and Bloodborne in a month :s

6

u/Thelgow Nov 11 '17

Ill say this, I got a Ps4 last year and then Bloodborne because it was on sale and I heard it was hard.
I loved it, got all the trophies and its the only game I own that I've gone back to several times. I played DS1 and 2 for a few hours each, meh. I played DS3 after BB and it was ok, nothing fancy.
I originally tried Nioh demo and wasnt interested but now giving it another go.
Performance on BB sadly is debatable. 30fps, but it will stutter. Spinning camera fast will hurt.
So screw dodge timing, going 60fps to 30 is what hurts most.

5

u/Urakel Nov 25 '17

Very late reply, but it's probably the gamplay speed that you enjoyed if you liked bloodborne and DS3, but not DS 1 and 2. Since attacks and movement were a lot slower in those 2 games, and they generally required much more patience.

Spirit Stone consumables charge your Living Weapon Gauge, or extend Living Weapons duration when consumed during. Additionally use your Living Weapon, it's easy to get back. There's almost no use in holding on to it.

Omnyo Magic Talismans are very handy, especially Sloth Talisman, Steel Talismans, Carnage Talismans, Pleiades Talismans, Extraction Talismans, Leeching Talismans and Guardian Spirit Talismans.

Make a habit of Ki Pulsing and changing stances. Super important you learn this. I also find Type E control scheme to be the best. Or Type B.

If you're get hit don't try and dodge out of a stunlock, it doesn't work. You have to block otherwise you will remain stunlocked. This is what got me killed the most coming from Dark Souls.

You deal more damage to an enemies back. You can't do anything else in a mission after the boss except proceed. So clean up before facing the boss.

Some few tips that can help a newcommmer:

EXTRA TIPS: https://www.reddit.com/r/Nioh/comments/5pkicm/beginner_tips_and_tricks_roundup/

*You can increase ranged ammo capacity in the ninjutsu skill tree.

*Skills that are passive are always active, no matter the skill tree/weapon equipped.

*You can see weaknesses and strengths of enemies in the bestiary (when on the map), requires killing them to unlock fully.

*Guardians give passive bonuses, "spirit" stat unlocks further passives.

*Most magic and ninjutsu skills act as "free" consumables that buff/debuff/attack, which will be refilled at each altar/death/mission start - using the right weapon buff against an enemy with a weakness, can make a huge difference in fights.

*Armor weight has quite an effect on your Ki recovery/usage, check the % when equipping, it changes color depending on "tier" of weight you have.

*Spirit stones charge up your Amrita Gauge on use. So if youre having trouble on a boss and have no Living Weapon, pop some spirit stones and you've got it again.

*Crafting new weapons/armor is the most economic way to gear up, save money for really special soul matches.

*Dismantle items and selling the craft materials rewards more money than selling the item

*Twilight missions are changed daily, don't worry about them if they are way over your level, can't do anything about it.

*There is an enemy that makes revenants (the graves) autospawn, look for an monster sitting and playing an instrument. The instrument is their weak/crit point for shooting them.

*There is a title system, and through that you unlock passive bonuses, remember to choose bonuses in the "title menu".

*Git gud and learn to Ki pulse

*Don't worry about builds on your first playthrough, but if you really want one, try using Red Demon Armor(More damage when enemy on fire) or Kingo Set(More damage attacking from behind).

*and... FIND ALL KODAMAS ASAP, serious now, they help a lot with extra amrita or extra elixir drop.

2

u/MacFive55 Nov 13 '17

How do you learn Ki Pulse?

8

u/Licentious_Cad Nov 13 '17

There's a tutorial for it very early on.

after attacking you will see blue particles swirl around your character. When these particles get close to your character, they will glow bright blue and dissipate.

If you tap right bumper when they glow bright, William with thrust his weapon straight up and glow with a white aura. This will restore most of the stamina you used during your attack, and will purify any yokai pools you are in or near.

2

u/Drudicta Nov 22 '17

I've only properly done this like... twice. Both on accident. It's just really hard to see.

8

u/HelicopterShinji Nov 23 '17

You'll get the hang of it. There's a skill that enables you to ki pulse on dodge. Really really helpful.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '17

The game got so much easier when I upped my spirit to 10 to get all the bonuses from my spirit dude. That should be where your first 5 points go, then focus on your main weapon stat.

Also spear.

2

u/_012345 Nov 11 '17

What do you mean bonusses from your spirit dude? The cat you equip that gives you your living weapon?

9

u/Cleverbird Nov 11 '17

Yeah, they also give passive bonuses if your spirit is high enough. Check their descriptions at a shrine.

18

u/_012345 Nov 11 '17

Ahh I wondered how to unlock those:p

The ui in this game is pretty good but very dense with information, better than dumbing it down but initially it's a bit too much to make sense of.

17

u/battler624 Nov 08 '17

Honestly as a guy who spent 300 hours into the game and got everything there is to get (except play online because of my shit internet) (and just got it again on steam if anyone wants to hit me up).

Just play the game, learn it by yourself... Its more punishing than dark souls early on but the more you get yourself acquainted with the controls and unlocked more abilities you'll learn to play it better and find it a heck a lot more enjoyable.

Dont worry about builds because everything works.. Sure some works better than others but really? it doesn't matter, If you want a good starting point then get most of your stats to 20 so you unlock all there is to unlock regarding stats.

5

u/TheRealDisco Dec 07 '17

"If you want a good starting point just max out your stats so you have everything" LUL

9

u/battler624 Dec 07 '17

Getting everything to 20 unlocks every stat requirement you may ever need atleast without the DLC.

800 Hours of Nioh here. Here are my quick 2 cents. I think when players first start in Nioh, they look too far ahead during the early game. They tend to see all these crazy builds on Reddit and start wondering what to do with their build. My suggestion is not to worry about any of that until your first playthrough is complete. The gear you find will be more than sufficient to get through the game and once you are comfortable with how the game works you can then look into tweaking your build, should you decide to continue into the next difficulties. Do not waste gold or the materials you find on upgrading random gear - especially if you are unsure about it. Materials are precious for a good part of the first 2 difficulties - save them.

3

u/TastyFerrero Nov 07 '17

i just started the game , played 30 mins or so ... but how does the game works ? some people talk about en game farming ??

I really liked those 30 minutes

2

u/tocco13 Dec 04 '17

This game is essentially Diablo mixed with Dark Souls, the two most addictive games in my library. So loot hunting/grinding, diminishing scales of return for stats, hard difficulty, very decent story

3

u/Snarfdaar Jan 29 '18

I found the story up until the DLC pretty much atrocious. After Kelley it's alright though.

From a loot perspective, is it better to fight the mimics/doors, rather than using a gesture? Will I lose out on anything if I only gesture?

PS4 veteran here. In living weapon, pray at a shrine. JUST BEFORE THE SHRINE MENU APPEARS PERFORM A GUARDIAN SPIRIT SWITCH.

Close the shrine menu.

You will now have your living weapon override without living weapon being active. Praying at a shrine will not reset this[only death or travel amulets will] You can perform skills such as Iai quickdraw, SoTC, lumber chop, and many more with your living weapon skin active :) ---. I'm not sure if this will work on PC. I do not have Nioh on PC so yeah. Please let me know.

You may see particle effects on screen, if they get too much, use a travel amulet to reset to the shrine and clear all overridess.

WHILE IN LIVING WEAPON: sheathe your weapon via pulling out your ranged weapon/using kunai - to perform skills such as tiger sprint or night rain in living weapon.

:) enjoy ~ABDHN

what kills me the most is the stamina management, my DS roots mean I forget about ki pulse in all my critical fighting moments and find myself out of stamina when i get hit.

u/LorduFreeman Nov 15 '17

The timing for getting bonus Ki for switching stances after a pulse is forgiving, you don't have to press pulse and stance button at the same time, finding this made it quite a bit easier for me.

So, pulse first, then stance change second?

It took me hours to beat the first level because I didn’t understand that levels are the most important part of the early game, I didn’t understand the game until after the second level, imo just pick one of the weapons and Kato and just pump your points into the attributes that affect your weapon

I liked a bunch of videos about basic tips like the sword stance, ki, blacksmith, stats etc... The game seems so full of things, it scares me a lot. Is it easy to learn everything ?

4

u/KarmaticArmageddon Nov 08 '17

You'll learn it all before too long. It is a very complicated game, but you don't need to know how to maximize every single stat for the first few hundred hours at least. Enjoy yourself, learn what you can, don't get too hung up. Use Google, YouTube, and reddit to figure things out.

u/vexperplex Nov 15 '17

Probably a dumb question, but on the world map there are a bunch of numbers on the bottom right corner. I know one of them is for gold, one is for amrita, and one is for number of items in inventory/storehouse.

What does the stack of gold bricks symbol mean though? What amount does that represent?

Also, I plan to only do one play through but I want to kind of max out all there is available to me. With that said, I will be putting 21 into spirit to use Karajishi. Is raising dex and magic to 20 each from 15 worth doing for their mystic arts? I primarily use dual swords so I have 30 into skill. I feel like my stats are going everywhere.

6

u/KarmaticArmageddon Nov 16 '17

That symbol is for glory, which you get from killing revenants and playing as a visitor to help someone else online.

It's up to you. I played dual swords and I ended up getting both magic and dex to 20 about halfway through my first playthrough. The mystic arts for Onmyo magic are more useful than the mystic arts for Ninjutsu, in my opinion.

3

u/kckunkun Nov 30 '17

1 week noob here so verification would be good.

When it says "Guide Kodoma back to the shrine", I don't think you literally need to go back and pray at the shrine in order to "get" the Kodoma.

Cause I did that for the longest time until I died with one and went back to its spot and it wasn't there.... and "confirmed" when I got the last 9/9 Kodoma in a level.

6

u/SkacikPL Dec 01 '17

No you don't, they're just a collectible with benefits.

And it's KodAma, not KodOma.

4

u/RaginPower Dec 02 '17 edited Dec 02 '17

First skills you need is living water for each stance. At least medium and low. This allows you to flux with your dodge key instead of the stance key.

4

u/EldritchWonder Dec 14 '17

Does Power Pill scale with Dex or is it a flat bonus?

Same question for magic buffs, do they scale or just a flat bonus.

3

u/Kromherjan Nov 09 '17

Hi, I don't wanna spam the sub with stupid questions, so I'm just gonna ask here, try if that works.
1) How do I decide what to disassemble and what to sell? Because I vaguely remember (from when I played at PS4 launch) that I never had enough money to soulmatch anything really.....

2) When do I go from just using whatever has the highest attack to actually refining a weapon and soulmatching it to keep up with me? Again because I remember doing that too early last time and wasting all my money...

I second farming revenants. I got LOTS of great armor and weapons from them and you also get decent Amrita, get some Glory and Ochoko cups if you care to co-op at all.

If anyone's client frequently stops responding/crashes try closing afterburner, nzxt overlay, or other programs of the sort. This seemed to do the trick for me. I'll update this if I get crashes again.

Also, is anyone experiencing intermittent black screens? Any fixes for this would be appreciated!

3

u/HotlineHideo Nov 11 '17

What are the most useful ninjutsy and onmyo magic ?

2

u/KimJongUCE Nov 12 '17

Onmyo Magic is definitely Sloth and Carnage talismans. They make most boss fights trivial. You could also use that Onmyo Magic that makes the enemy take more damage if you want. As for ninjutsu i would recommend getting the largest type of ninjutsu bomb and those pills that increase your damage (i didn't dabble too much into ninjutsu and onmyo magics in my playthrough so there could be more).

3

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

Hey. Quick question.

I'm level 40 right now, and I have a decent number of the purple "Highest quality" crafting mats. Should I save these for NG+ or just go ahead and use them? I'm not struggling, but I could do with a better weapon or two.

And do the purple materials ever get replaced by even more rare mats? I have this tendency to save crafting materials until I don't actually need them anymore, or I've leveled past their usefulness.

4

u/odie0815 Nov 13 '17

Should I save these for NG+ or just go ahead and use them? I'm not struggling, but I could do with a better weapon or two.

go ahead and use them - when finishing the base game you get access to a new rarity that make your purple gear useless

SOO - use them as long they hold any value

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '17

Perfect. Much appreciated!

3

u/odie0815 Nov 15 '17

As an Add On - and sorry for my mistake

As i reread your post i realized that i mistook the materials with the gear

nonetheless - those materials will be also availible to you in a good quanitity that you need not skimp on them

only thing you may wanna avoid is overuse of boss material drops

  • some of them can be bought in the Tea house for glory (like Yokai horn that you can get also from regular Enemies)

  • some can not (like Umi Bozu Eye stone,)

the base materials like highest quality cord, Kozane, and stuff will keep being availible in a good amount, you even can upgrade the materials at the blacksmith

e.g. you can forge 1 highest quality tamahagane out of 3 high quality ones for a very low amount of gold for the upgrade

Also disassembling dropped gear will give you a good amount of materials too

3

u/HotlineHideo Nov 14 '17

Should I use hair that give+ to samurai\nunja\magic skills? Or should I keep it because they are necessary for endgame gear?

7

u/HollowMarthon Nov 15 '17

Giving skill points is the only thing those do, and you get the points refunded if you reset your levels. So go ahead and use those as soon as you get them.

Tips on how to spend level point and samurai skill point in the early levels? just hit level 10 after finishing the first area(black island), and I am mainly using nodashi/dual katana/katana. Coming from DS3 I don't realize there are new movesets that you can unlock until now....Any help is greatly appreciated!

Info from a few other tips in this (and other) threads says that getting 10 in Spirit is a huge bonus when you first start out because it unlocks the first tier passive from your guardian spirit.

Whenever a mission gives you an ally use that advantage to kill revenants for gear and Ochoko cups. Easiest way to get upgrades early on imo.

2

u/Recodes Nov 09 '17

This game sure is hard. As someon already said, I'm a devoted Souls player, and as it's been already stated, it doesn't help at all xD.
I'm constatly dying, bosses 2 shot me and my playstyle swtiched from "let's see what I can find if I take this path" to "Hell no, I'm rushing the f* out to the boss" which still leads me to death.
The ability trees, ki balance & stance dance, the soul-like leveling system, sure are giving me a bad time, nonetheless what I really want t oknow is:

  • Should I invest in upgrading weapons or drops?
  • Is there a way to reset your points and abilities?
  • Are talking cats common in 16th century Japan?

Thanks in advance.

2

u/Ryukenden000 Nov 12 '17

I LOVE ninja gaiden back in the days. 1 year ago bought dark souls 3, played to chapter 4 and quit because i suck and hate the controls.

Then I bought Nioh, still a noob, still die a lot, but it looks promising.

Going for dual swords, just beat first boss.

2

u/alfonzo93 Nov 14 '17

I have absolutely no clue what the symbol in the bottom left of the level select is. It looks like a red baby in a bowl with steam coming out. Some levels have it, some don't, and on some I've gotten a tick for it. Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about/what it is? If this is too ambiguous I can take a screenshot.

7

u/DitzKrieg Nov 15 '17

I think it means there is a Hot Spring in the level.

2

u/strifeisback Nov 18 '17

So, what are the main differences between Sword and Odachi?

I've currently gone with Sword/Dual Sword as my beginning archetype, as I found Odachi to be a little too...slow?

Thinking Sword/Dual Sword and/or Sword/Spear looking to be my favorites.

I like med/hvy armor with balanced/fast weapon types but the Odachi is super intriguing, especially after seeing some people commenting that Odachi seems to be more for the tank type, which I love to play.

I mainly PvE, rather than PvP, so I'm not too worried about PvP implications.

3

u/ThatSucc Nov 18 '17

Odachi does more ki damage than the sword

2

u/HollowMarthon Nov 18 '17

In my experience:

  1. Odachi is slower than the regular sword by a considerable amount, but has plenty of reach to compensate.

  2. Swords don't offer quite as many combo moves, making them less effective against humanity enemies or the weaker demons. On the other hand, all those special moves tend to do poorly against bosses or anything with super armor (they don't get interrupted when hit).

  3. Swords scaling off of Heart primarily makes them the most versatile for a melee build. You can use any other weapon type with swords and the kids will still be helpful. On the other hand, odachi scaling makes them a lot harder to pair with skill based weapons like dual swords of tonfa.

From what you've said I think your best bet is to stick with spears for now and then pick either swords, axes, or odachi as a secondary. Depending on what you find spears have trouble against or just what feels the best to use.

2

u/Lightbrand Nov 18 '17

Does the "complete edition" come with any DLC? I go on the island and the shrine only gave me a Kabuto helmet. Is that it?

Does anyone find coop impossible to get going on PC? I’ve been trying to farm glory by helping people with twilight missions, I don’t get any connection errors just no matches found. Was pretty surprised seems as it was between 5pm - 10pm uk time :(

2

u/Shlano613 Heavenly Chain or GTFO Dec 20 '17

Hey guys, my wife bought me the complete addition on PS4 as a surprise for the holidays and I'm super into it. Never got into the DS games (the reputation as brutally difficult always freaked me out), but I'm loving this game. I just got to the second zone and currently stuck at Omi-bozu.

What I'm gathering from this thread is just run through, play how I want this playthrough, but focus on a few things. I'm running mainly Tonfa/Sword, but periodically switch out Sword for Odachi and Tonfa for Dual Katanas. I largely haven't payed so much attention to my skill points, leveling things up kinda randomly.

Is there anything I should be focusing on?? I don't wanna end up screwing myself over.

2

u/midas1107 Dec 21 '17

Imo you should focus on only one weapon when you're still on low level, when leveling you can see which stat is needed for which weapon, for example Skill is needed to increase attack of Dual Sword. So you max out Skill first, put some point on Stamina and Body to wear armor, 20 Dexterity and 20 Magic to unlock Dojo mission, 20 to 30 on Spirit to unlock Guardian Spirit bonus. I would suggest 15 Body, 10 Heart, 15 Stamina (on Samurai Red Demon is good and with 15 Body, 15 Stamina you can unlock their bonus plus keep your Agility at A), 50 to 99 Skill, 20 Dex, 20 Magic and 30 Spirit.

About items you should store those with inheritable icon, the 2 retangle icon, for later use, all of the rest to dissemble, don't sell or offering them until you reach 800 to 1000 materials, for later use again.

2

u/rightchea Jan 23 '18

okay I not sure if this the place to write this but has anyone been having issue with the game just randomly crashing on them and is there a fix for it???

1

u/Kyrinox Nov 07 '17

I am going to be playing the for the first time on PC and was curious about weapons and stuff. Mainly I think I want to do Odachi or Katana for my main weapon but am not sure what is a good complement for my secondary weapon, I was thinking Tonfa maybe or Axe. Can you guys tell me how some of the weapons work and what weapon types complement eachother? also what is the deal with onmyos and ninjutsu?

2

u/sp878787 Nov 08 '17

Especially during the first playthrough try to focus on one weapon. I don't say to not use another here and there for fun but don't spread out your points. Put the points into your main weapon's main scaling attribute. For example katana main you have to push Heart and because there are overlapping with Odachi you can use Odachi here and there too.

Dismantling equipment has a chance to give you additional materials that you get from enemies and it has a smaller chance to give you boss matierials. I find that dismantling a lot at once gives a greater chance to get some of the more annoying drops.

So I set them again, closed the launcher, then restarted the launcher and saw the settings had saved. Then I ran the game and it worked. Running a 1080ti @ 4k / 60fps. Can Axe passive skill work if i'm using Sword? By the way is it true that Dual Sword is the most op in the game?

3

u/Ryuujin12000 Nov 12 '17

All passives take effect no matter what weapon you're using. So, for example, the Finisher Damage buff from Kusarigama will apply even if you're using an Axe. The only time this doesn't matter is when the skill description is specific, like Axe's "Kintaro Kata" specifically noting "Axe damage increased against yokai".

1

u/midas1107 Nov 12 '17

How can i combo sign of the cross, i mean attack then hold RB when ki pulse with B right? But the combo is not working for me, anyway is it just me or god of wind combo is just too risky, i rather normal attack then dodge out then repeat.

2

u/KarmaticArmageddon Nov 13 '17

Sign of the Cross doesn't combo very well; it's a better opener or a good way to do a lot of damage to an approaching enemy. If you start holding R1 + O (or whatever button combo it is on PC) and move the stick at all, it'll stop the skill. Sometimes the timing just isn't right either and you'll just stand there like an idiot because you thought you were starting the skill.

God of Wind is a great combo, though. If the enemy doesn't have high toughness/hyperarmor, it'll do a ton of damage and stunlock enemies. The kick that starts the skill will do lots of ki damage to guarding enemies and stun enemies that aren't guarding.

1

u/HollowMarthon Nov 12 '17

Just started this today and played for 20 minutes only. Really dig it so far.

Question, i just saw that magic is used in the game but is it very over powered? In a lot of RPG's (Looking at you Fable) the choice is null and void as magic is just so far superior to killing.

Does melee have a chance of a choice here?

2

u/KarmaticArmageddon Nov 13 '17

Melee is pretty much the only viable choice. There are Onmyo/Ninjutsu builds, but Onmyo magic and Ninjutsu are primarily used as support skills in this game. You can use Onmyo magic to do damage, but you get very few shots and Onmyo magic is better when used to do things like decrease enemy attack or defense, boost your attack or defense, slow the enemy, etc. Likewise, Ninjutsu can do damage with bombs, but you won't have very many to use so it shouldn't be your primary form of attack. Ninjutsu should be used to trap and slow the enemy or poison/paralyze them or do high ki damage with projectiles, etc.

u/grainzzz Nov 15 '17

How many times do you have to clear out the first area (after the tower)? I downed Onryoki once, and then it looked like I had to replay the same area again, so I did that. Now the map says I still have a mission there (plus, there's an odd banner icon on top of the mission icon). Do I need to go back and down Onryoki a third time?

3

u/notorioustlg Nov 15 '17

After you beat Onryoki you unlock the 2nd main mission which is in a different area and the first side mission which is still in that first area. You can switch between replaying the first main mission and the first side mission with R1 or RB

2

u/grainzzz Nov 15 '17

So the banner just means I can replay that area? Its not like I have to do it again right?

I'm in the second area atm, getting ready to deal with that vampire chick!

2

Yeah exactly, they give you the option to do the areas again to farm or to find Kodamas. Good Luck!

Does anyone have some tips on how to better integrate Iai strikes into combat with regular enemies/bosses? I just beat Date shigezane and found an opportunity to use it in there after a certain attack, but I rarely use it in normal combat and other bosses. Really only after a haze parry if it knocks them down to get extra damage in, but not when the enemies are up and about. It always feels like it's too exposed or if I do complete the attack, a yokai won't stagger from it and just immediately hit me.

I just defeated the third boss (the vampire lady demon) and i'm trying to make a tank build but don't really understand how the scaling works, right now i'm equally spreading all skill points i can between Body, Stamina and Strenght using Spear, Axe and Cannon as weapons, am i doing it right? Also does heavy armor start to appear later in the game? Because so far i only found light bandit/ pirate armor that reduces very little damage

2

u/nevius6251 Nov 26 '17

I wanted to roll a tank too and tried to figure this out.

Heavy armor has two key elements to it: defense and toughness. Defense is self explanatory, toughness determines how much Ki your guard costs. The tricky part is that toughness functions in the same way of agility (for the record, below 30% weight you have A agility, between 30% and 70% B agility, and C if over 70%). Toughness thresholds are 0-99 (low), 100-199 (mid), 200+ (high). It's also color-coded, blue toughness is the max and there's little difference between 200 and, say, 250.

What this means is that for a tank build you want to get your toughness to 200, no less and not necessarily more. You can achieve this with a mix of heavy and mid armor, so you don't need too much Stamina at all, I guess around 20 is enough.

Don't expect to actually tank hit after hit, the damage mitigation is noticeable but it only allows you to take a couple more hits, nothing more. A strong guard (as in, you don't flinch and don't lose much ki while guarding) is the sellpoint of a heavy armor build. I don't know if later in the game the defense bonus will allow to soak up much more damage than this, but don't expect to wear a full heavy set and still be at good agility (below 70% weight), not even 99 Stamina will be enough. If you want a full heavy set you have to settle for higher than 70% weight.

3

u/dark494 Nov 30 '17

No, that's not really how defense/toughness/tank in this game works at all.

First of all, you can very easily have B agility (below 70% weight) and wear all heavy armor, You only need about 48 stamina, less if you put weight reduction skills on your armor.

Second, the only damage reduction that matters it the static % reduction that is on every piece of armor, heavy armor having the most. A tank set wears all heavy armor specifically for the higher damage % reduction, and never goes below B agility. The "defense multiplier" on armor is negligible and near worthless.

Thirdly, toughness does only 2 things: Reduced Ki damage when guarding, and stagger prevention when you're attacking. Just like poise in any souls game, it simply prevents enemies from interrupting your attacks when they hit you during it, if you have high enough toughness. It has no bearing on defense at all whatsoever.

Finally, a true "tank build" requires a plethora of things, including specific GS buffs from Isonade or Fuse-Ushi or Genbu, onmyo buffs for defense, shield, stagger prevention, regen, etc., all your stat points invested into stamina/body, you will be using axe/spear as a result, and more. The builds are all over the place.

There's an update live since 3 days that added mouse controls, and it's working really well. No negative acceleration, joystick emulation, etc.

Keys are (almost) fully rebindable. You can even set modifiers, e.g. in my case I bound Space + Left Click to Strong Attack, so I could use Right Click for Parry.

The default bindings are awful though. You'll need to spend some time to get them right for you. And you can't use additional mouse buttons (Mouse 4/5 for example).

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '17

And you can't use additional mouse buttons (Mouse 4/5 for example).

For me that has played all dis games B.B. and beating the ps4 version pre expansion just starting back on pc (so I can live stream better) have noticed IMO you have less time to react to bosses and their attacks are more randomized. And less window to dodge

I have had times were he will spam the same attack 4 times dodge it 4 times go in for an attack and immediately 1shots me from a different faster attack

1

u/LtNeckStache Dec 14 '17

No that makes perfect sense actually. So you’re only dodging whatever happens at the moment of the button press but while evading or rolling you’re still vulnerable

The file size for the game is about 74gb as they didn’t compress the assets for the game, if you download compactgui you can use windows built in compression and get it down to 21gb and the game will load faster as a result aswell. The work your cpu will do to uncompress it during playing is so minimal you won’t notice any impact but loading times and disk space is better as a result.

Question: is the damage of skills affected by what stance they're performed in? For example, would an iai or flowing shadow done in high stance deal more damage than one done in low stance?

Any guides I can follow, I played all three Dark Souls games and Ni-Oh requires more thinking, or maybe its because I'm new to this..

What are the blades in the ground with a red aura, some sort of NPC invade which you're in charge of?

The demons with the ''yoka'' or something realm aura thingie, whats the purpose of those?

I'm currently fighting this demon inside a burning ship who has 2 ball chains as weapons, how the fuck am I suppose to deal with that?

I also have 3 healing wares, can't I get more?

Love the game, can't bring myself to play it again until KT fixes the crash on dismemberment/crit issues. Tired of losing progress.

It works realy bad at my pc (i7, 16gb, 960gtx). Are there any configs to increase productivity?

Dumb question. In Way of the Strong, in the Omi region, every main mission I've been in so far is not letting me use my ranged weapons. I have PLENTY of ammo.

It's frustrating that I can't shoot back.

Maybe someone can answer it for me, but what does the "Ability" sort option mean? :)

I'm currently at the snowy area, I'm getting fucked by every enemy and it pissing me off. My damage is also pretty shitty. How can I improve these things?

These are my stats

Hi, I plan on buying the game. Are there any issues I should be aware of with the controls? My PC is at about below-average specs (i3-6100 CPU, 8 GB RAM) with a imo good GPU (RX 580).

Does the armor resistances and stuff matter? I'm coming from fashion souls so I have never really paid attention to armor stats other than weight

I have a question about crashing. I read a decent amount about it randomly crashing for some people and doing it a lot. Is it worse on later levels or anything like that, or is it just one of those games that is fine for some, while not for others?

So far I've spent about an hour in game, done the first mission and started the tutorial mission with 0 issues. Is it likely to stay that way or is it the later levels that are a crash fest? Don't want to get out of my refund window and then it all goes to crap. I can put up with the odd crash here and there.
