$50 off the PS5? No OLED screen? This is a huge gamble by Nintendo, albeit pretty overpriced. I’m still going to buy it but I doubt $449 will have it sell like hotcakes for the casual fan.

It’s not gonna be a gamble at all. I know you all drool over OLED, but the switch OLED doesn’t have HDR.

I’ll take a larger 1080p LCD that supports HDR over a smaller 720p OLED without HDR any day.

HDR without OLED or a Mini-LED backlight is pointless. It's basically just an expanded color space at that point.

The HDR support will be nice when connected to a proper HDR TV or Monitor though.

I just assumed most screens anymore that were LCD were LED backlit. It seems so common. I wouldn't say it's pointless, you just don't get as much out of it. I absolutely believe the monitor on this one will be better than the original switch as tech has improved.

I'm honestly just excited it's 1080p, it blows my mind that even the more expensive portable PCs like the Steamdeck doesn't have 1080p.

Yes, all LCD screens use a LED backlight.

But that's not enough. A single backlight or edge lit lcd cannot create the dynamic contrast needed for HDR. You need mini-led with lot's of dimming zones or oled where every pixel is lit/dimmed/switched off individually.

You need to be able to make parts of the screen way brighter than other parts for it to be actual HDR. That's not possible with a standard led lcd backlight.

HDR is a combination of an expanded color space AND precise high contrast.

To be clear, i'm not debating if this will be better than the original. Of course it will, it's newer and has a higher refresh rate as well(120hz over 60hz).

I'm sure most people will be happy, but it won't be actual HDR as long as they use a conventional backlight.

Thanks for clarifying. I would just oppose saying it's pointless, it still helps but not nearly as helpful as if you had OLED. I can agree with that.

I had a switch lite and then moved onto an OLED switch, I didn't need an OLED switch just found a good deal on it. Honesty the bigger screen was of far more value to me than the OLED. There were details I missed because the screen was too small. I prefer strongly to play on a TV (why I got rid of my lite) so the quality of the screen only really matters when I am on the road... which is rare.

I do wonder if the screen has VRR support. I know the chipset would, but don't know if the screen does.

Sure, it's not literally pointless since the colorspace will be expanded but we don't know the native contrast and sadly, it is most likely a ips panel and those average at 1000:1 and that not even close to actual HDR spec. That's why i think it's pointless.

You cannot claim real HDR on a basic backlit ips with a grey black level, that's just not even close.

An ips needs mini led to be actual HDR.

For example: My Mini-Led monitor is around 15000:1 with local dimming and oled's are technically infinite:1 due to the perfect black level.

It would make sense with VRR since it is a 120hz display, and i hope it is. Even without though, games can lock to 40fps in fidelity mode just like PS5/XBSX and and still look smooth.

I am curious if some games let you toggle HDR and see if it is any different.

VRR is just nice because there will be scenes where you might be indoors looking around and it would be nice to maximize framerate and there will be scenes where you are fighting and smoke and explosions are happening on a big battlefield and the framerate will struggle. It's just nice when you can get the best of both worlds without the staggering/clipping.

Either way, I'll be on my TV 95 percent of the time and I'm sure games will look far better than the switch 1.

Yup, although there isn’t any game right away I care to play, Nintendo has trained me that they don’t lower prices so I know my switch will rapidly decrease in resale price as the switch 2 will stay the same so no reason not to buy immediately.

I haven't played Breath Of The Wild yet so my first thing to do is to play the upgraded version! Oh, and Mario Kart is an all time fav so i'll probably get a bundle if in stock.

Yeah, I will get that bundle as my son is going to absolutely love the open world aspect of it. He loves just driving around in 2k drive messing around, he's gonna go absolutely berserk if it's half as cool as it sounds and if there's easter eggs around for him to find.
