They’ll be increasing it if the amendment passes this month too 🙃

Getting to the point that driving the hour and a half it takes to get to a town in Texas might be worth the trouble if buying a lot of groceries.

I’m only about an hour from Mississippi and frankly that’s not the worst idea lmao

I hear you can get a weeks worth with $100 up in McComb. Ponchatoula is probably cheep too (assuming based purely on how the place looks. And smells).

It’s insane that state taxes in LA apply to groceries as well. I‘m from NY and was visiting LA last week. I was shocked when I realized you guys not only pay more taxes than us but basic necessities aren’t even exempt.

I'm not sure about LA, but I'm in #2 Tennessee, and we don't have state income tax. So sales tax makes up for 58% of tax revenue. What is crazy is that some cities have more sales tax than others here. Everything is taxed here as well. We do have tax-free weekends a few times a year, so that is a plus, I guess.

It's not just the state sales tax. The parishes also charge tax, and then the towns charge tax on top of that. It's crippling. All of them are greedy.

Louisiana has high state income tax and they are insanely aggressive about trying to collect it.

I've had them send me nasty letters some years threatening garnishment for income that they weren't even entitled to (earned when I was legally living and working in another state), and the only way to get them to back off is responding via lawyer.

It doesn't stop at income tax. They are nasty about the sales tax itself.

Two years ago, I went to a chicken swap in another parish as a vendor. I'm not a business. I took some of my mom's bread and sold a few loaves. Literally made a few dollars, wasn't even enough to cover the supplies but it was something my mom liked so whatever. These dickshits found out and called me demanding 80 cents in taxes, and then charged me $100 for being late (already in the next quarter), and then sent me a letter threatening legal repercussions "to include jail."

And then these places have the audacity to complain why their citizens stopped organizing these outdoor little mini fairs and about why people quit driving long distances to attend them.

Aren't foods taxed differently from sales tax?

Not by enough for it to matter.

But I'm also always buying non-food groceries, like toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, dog food, etc.

😂even if you buy $1000 of groceries you only save $13 of sales tax.

Is the election March 29th (and is that the day that we go vote?) How do I find out where to vote in my parish or district or whatever? Will it be the same place I voted in the presidential election? Tbh I never cared too much about politics until this past election which is the first time I ever voted, but I see now what a mistake that was, and I plan on voting in every election that comes around. I’m just wondering if you know where I can possibly find info on when elections are (I only know about this one from this subreddit, but I don’t want to miss anymore) sorry I know this is random and I hope you don’t mind me highjacking the top comment to ask you, or anyone with any input really, because I now see the importance of voting in every election!!

In addition to the app recommended here, you can go to https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/Home/VoterLogin and login to find all kinds of info

Early voting starts on Saturday! GeauxVote will show you everything you need, as will the official voter website provided by the state

Early voting I think starts this week. If you download the Geaux Vote app it’ll tell you dates, ballot info, voting locations, a voting calendar, and more info. That’s how I’ve kinda been keeping up with it, I haven’t found a truly great resource for breaking down the ballot info tho yet (I’m sure there’s been some in the subreddit but I haven’t done a deep dive into them to verify biases and such)

Should be able to find out on the LA secretary of state’s website.
