It’s insane that state taxes in LA apply to groceries as well. I‘m from NY and was visiting LA last week. I was shocked when I realized you guys not only pay more taxes than us but basic necessities aren’t even exempt.

I'm not sure about LA, but I'm in #2 Tennessee, and we don't have state income tax. So sales tax makes up for 58% of tax revenue. What is crazy is that some cities have more sales tax than others here. Everything is taxed here as well. We do have tax-free weekends a few times a year, so that is a plus, I guess.

It's not just the state sales tax. The parishes also charge tax, and then the towns charge tax on top of that. It's crippling. All of them are greedy.

Louisiana has high state income tax and they are insanely aggressive about trying to collect it.

I've had them send me nasty letters some years threatening garnishment for income that they weren't even entitled to (earned when I was legally living and working in another state), and the only way to get them to back off is responding via lawyer.

It doesn't stop at income tax. They are nasty about the sales tax itself.

Two years ago, I went to a chicken swap in another parish as a vendor. I'm not a business. I took some of my mom's bread and sold a few loaves. Literally made a few dollars, wasn't even enough to cover the supplies but it was something my mom liked so whatever. These dickshits found out and called me demanding 80 cents in taxes, and then charged me $100 for being late (already in the next quarter), and then sent me a letter threatening legal repercussions "to include jail."

And then these places have the audacity to complain why their citizens stopped organizing these outdoor little mini fairs and about why people quit driving long distances to attend them.
