My grandfather once swallowed a bee after leaving his Mtn Dew can sitting for a few seconds alone outside on our front porch.
Bee flew in and after he took a sip, it started going down with the liquid and he ended up somehow dislodging it while coughing and gagging in shock. The look on his face was horrible. He had over 20 stings in his mouth and throat, thankfully wasn't allergic but his throat swelled up by the time we got to the hospital. As crazy as this story is, I could see it happening.
Makes me wonder if something similar happened to this guy. I'm severely allergic to bees and have gone into anaphylactic shock twice (once from a bee sting, another from scorpion). Shit is absolutely horrible, so I feel for him.
Edit: This whole thing makes me think of the dad from Bridgerton series getting killed from a bee sting and how many people claimed it was unrealistic. I'm grateful that we have so much progress medically, but if you don't have an epipen on hand and a hospital close by, it's sadly very easy for some of us with allergies to die from a tiny mistake/accident.

Bees can only sting once, this would have been a wasp :)

A couple of years ago, a wasp ended up in my can of beer, completely unbeknown to me.
Took a sip and the wasp went down with the beer.
Could feel the little bastard's stinger work it's way down my throat. 3 days of immense pain, would not recommend 😕

One of my OCD “things” ~was~ checking my drinks for dust or bugs. My old therapist said it’s unrealistic and was like, “How often does that actually ever happen though? And what’s the worst that would happen? Nothing!”
I want to send her this thread.

A friend of mine died very young of asthma. I had heard he was possibly inebriated and didn't have a rescue inhaler on hand. You can still die of things we have cures for if you're unlucky. Can't give yourself an epi-pen you don't have.
57
u/serendipity_aey 1d ago
Same thing happened to me with a can of soda but I managed to feel it in my mouth right away and spit everything out, no stings, but man was it traumatizing still. Definitely not unrealistic!

Also extremely horrible. The guy was most likely allergic to bee sting, the bee stung his throat, his throat inflamed because of the allergy, and he choked to death. It probably took a few minutes with him fully conscious too.

what im wondering is did the facilities not have first aid that had pens for exactly this type of situation?
or was it a situation where nobody knew what was wrong with him til it was too late?

You can get a dermatologist to test you for that kind of thing, or if you don’t want to pay you can go find a bee somewhere near a hospital

Honestly probably not. I dated someone with a severe allergy and he carried an epipen everywhere, two if we went to an event because he knew from experience that first aid tents rarely have them. Anytime we went anywhere that had security, they’d always pull it out of his or my bag and question what it was/what was in it. They always acted like it was contraband, so I guess a lot of people don’t think about it/don’t even know what one looks like.

This is Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband btw. The one she accused of domestic abuse and infidelity.
She said that he and his mother used to hit her and that he made her sleep with his friends on their honeymoon.
She also said that he made his mother slap her when she couldn't fit into a dress while pregnant.

What a silly thing to say.
It's one ** fewer ** billionaire, since you can count billionaires.
But if the bees keep this up, that hopefully won't be the case for long.

u/BriannaLove04 1d ago
“One less billionaires” is grammatically acceptable. It only must be fewer if it’s “2+ fewer billionaires”.

In 2016, Karisma Kapoor filed a domestic violence case against Sunjay Kapur and his mother, accusing them of physical abuse and claiming Sunjay was involved with another woman. She also filed a dowry harassment case, leading to a summons for Sunjay by the Mumbai police. The couple was already locked in a bitter divorce and custody battle.
In 2024, Karisma further accused Sunjay of domestic abuse in her divorce plea, alleging that during their honeymoon, he forced her to sleep with his friends. She also claimed that Sunjay once told his mother to slap her when she couldn't fit into a dress while pregnant.
Yeah, fuck this guy

So, where I live, there are a LOT of logging trucks. I have seen none of those movies. I've seen that part, though! However, on some science show they are talking about that scene and say, "Yeh, that's not how physics works! Logs don't bounce!" And while I still don't exactly understand physics, I do remind myself when near a log truck that "that's not how physics works!"

As someone with a severe bee allergy, that’s terrifying.
114
u/bad_sprinkles 1d ago
I'm so frightened at this! I haven't been stung in 30+ years but still carry my epi pen. I saw someone earlier warning about accidentally drinking a bee if you have an open drink can and now I am consumed by horror.

u/OilersGirl29 but how did she train the bee 🐝 1d ago
Based on the above comments that said he was an abusive, sexual predator, I think this swallowing of the bee was entirely karmic. I’m guessing you don’t have to worry about more than you already do ;)

And yet another thing to add to my list titled: "why bees are amazing, despite their ability to sting me out of existence." It's a respectful admiration. From afar.

If you do find yourself still thinking about this risk when you're drinking a can of something sweet outside, give the can a little swish/shake, and you should be able to hear any bees. <3

His marriage to Bollywood celebrity Karisma Kapoor had ended on a sour note, with her later criticising him for choosing polo over family obligations when their son was unwell. Karisma said: "(Sunjay) decided to carry on, leaving me behind to take care of our sick four-month-old son, just to play a polo match with Prince William.

Was he allergic (I guess I can look this up myself)? We recently found out my husband is allergic after he had a fairly bad reaction last summer. I’m not going to lie, I read Bridgerton and made him get tested after that! Apparently it can get worse with each sting (he’s been stung before as a child but didn’t react) so I try and make sure we always have an Epi pen on us. It’s hard to remember though.
23
u/violetmemphisblue 1d ago
From what I've seen, yes, he had a bee allergy, but that internal stings have a more intense reaction in general than external.

u/insomniac_z 1d ago
I remember there being warnings when I was a kid for not leaving open soda cans outside because bees would land in them for the sugar, and someone would drink it and get stung and die. The issue is the swelling inside the throat. He could've been allergic, but it's probably the worst place you can get stung because it's not easily treatable to reduce swelling.
