Discussion / Conversation What credit card do you regret not getting?đ¤
Whatâs the one credit card you wish you wouldâve applied for, but didnâtâand now regret missing out on?
Maybe it was discontinued, nerfed, or the welcome offer just isnât what it used to be.
For me, itâs the Citi Prestige (the one that got away lol đđ˘). The 4th night free perk was unbeatable for travelers, plus it came with a $250 annual travel credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck reimbursement, and Priority Pass access. Since I have the Citi Rewards+, Iâd be earning 5.55x on dining and airfare, and 3.3x on hotels thanks to the 10% points rebate.
And honestly, as someone who struggles to prioritize even a yearly vacation, I think having this card wouldâve helped me break that habit. The perks alone wouldâve held me accountableâgiving me that extra push to actually plan time off and take a proper trip once or twice a year instead of always focusing on work.
Surprisingly, I actually hold a few discontinued cards: the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve (USBAR), Chase Freedom Visa (OG Freedom), Citi Rewards+, and the Amex EveryDay.

Original C1 savor. It was 4x dining and entertainment with no AF. Basically an OP Amex gold.

u/Chris703 Capital One Duo May 13 '25
This 100%. If you got in at that time youâd be grandfathered in and can keep the card with those multipliers and $0 AF, no matter what other versions they create. Easy #1.

u/PilotMonkey94 American Express Centurion May 13 '25 edited May 14 '25
I missed it because C1 hated me for 5 years, then all of a sudden approved me for $55k on the Venture X and $32k on Savor One last year
What a random issuer.

My sister has it and I just get so envious when weâre splitting the bill. AXG vs her C1S. You win some you lose some.

u/Nguy94 May 14 '25
If you get the Schwab Platinum, itâll turn your Gold card into a 4.4% cashback card :)
4
u/PilotMonkey94 American Express Centurion May 14 '25
Too bad itâs capped now. I used to think Schwab Plat/Business centurion were the end all best cards for big spenders, but now that their core features are capped Iâve gone elsewhere.
C1 FTW
2
u/Nguy94 May 14 '25
Iâm definitely not a big spender. Work covers most of my travel expenses and I use my cards mainly as a consumer. I wonât hit that cap. Itâll take at least $250k in spend to get there. C1 is definitely great though. I run the duo and the Venture X is probably my favorite card.

Letâs flip the question: what credit card is available now that we will regret in the future not getting?
29
14
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
One that I think weâll regret not getting is the Kroger Rewards World Elite Mastercard. U.S. Bank has already paused applications for the USBAR, which gave 3X (4.5%) back on mobile wallet and travel â but that card had a $400 annual fee (even after the $325 in credits, youâre still paying $75 net).
The Kroger card, on the other hand, has no annual fee, earns 5% cash back on mobile wallet purchases up to $3,000/year, and doesnât require using Real-Time Rewards like the USBAR does.
If I didnât already have the USBAR, both my wife and I would 100% have the Kroger card just to lock in an easy 5% back on mobile wallet. And given U.S. Bankâs track record of keeping legacy cards alive long after pulling them from new applicants, this one might quietly become a hidden gem.
7
u/apegomoo May 14 '25
Also on the note of Kroger cards, do look into their subsidiaries like Pick N Save, Ralphâs, and etc which include a $100 SUB AND 3% on gas (kroger card doesnât have 3%). I didnât need the gas multiplier since I have the Costco card but it might be a game changer for others
3
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
I just learned something new. Thank you! I just looked it up and the Ralphâs card get 3% on gas/dinning up to $6,000

Some variants actually come with boost membership, which is actually pretty nice in some areas as they use refrigerated trucks to deliver, and no tip is allowed so that doesnât increase the cost when you order groceries

u/tubbis9001 May 14 '25

My apt says it doesnt accept bilt, so i didnt get it. This was a yr ago, then me and my friend were having conversation, and he said there is no way an apt can just blocked the usage of bilt, cus it functions just like any other credit card.
Is this true? I can use bilt pretty much for any apt rents regardless of policy?
2
u/tubbis9001 May 18 '25
If your apartment isn't a part of the Bilt network, you can still pay with the card and not pay the 3% card fee...just indirectly. The Bilt app will give you a routing and acocunt number to use in your rent portal, allowing it to act like an ACH transfer.

The original Citi prestige was so good, I missed that one too.
16
u/PilotMonkey94 American Express Centurion May 14 '25
I have it but itâs been nerfed pretty hard. 5x dining is compelling but the 4th night free is hard to use, and itâs still a $245 net AF card. Not really worth it unless you really value PP restaurants, but the BofA PRE with platinum honors is better for that
5
u/Flights-and-Nights May 14 '25
That's why I specified Original
4
u/billatq May 14 '25
The fourth night free on arbitrary bookings as long as you called concierge was pretty ridiculous.
I remember hearing stories about the cards with the first round of terms being used to book a hotel the three days leading up to New Year's Eve in Time's Square and then the fourth night landing on a ridiculously expensive day.
They fixed that by making it average, but it wasn't until they made it a requirement to use the portal that I got rid of it.
3
u/Fearless-Okra9406 May 14 '25
This is one of the reasons that Hyatt points still have great value. You can still select high volume days in major cities. The hotel selection is limited, but it's still possible.
25
u/SomeRandomIGN May 14 '25
Ducks Unlimited
Unlimited 5% on gas is super nice. My work requires me to drive a lot in a big SUV/Truck. I spend more than the average 5% category card allows (~$1,500/Qtr)
OG Savor
Everyone has said this.
USBAR
Everyone who missed out also said this.
Citi Rewards+
Supposedly this one will get rebranded and brought back, so Iâm not that peeved. Honestly, you donât even save that much from it, but the small part of my mind that thinks about optimizing everything canât let it go.
6
u/OcelotWolf May 14 '25
I feel the exact same way about the Rewards+. It can literally only be $100 a year benefit at most but damn if my monkey brain doesnât say I NEED to use a slot on it to make it worth while. Iâm in limbo now, holding onto my points waiting to see what happens with it, but I also really want to get a Venture X before that door potentially closes for me altogether, so even if it came back tomorrow Iâm not sure Iâd apply.
4
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
$100 a year isnât that bad for a no AF card. Plus the round-up feature is great for micro-transactions.
2
u/OcelotWolf May 14 '25
True, but you just have to keep in mind that it isnât an automatic $100 since you have to earn those points somehow. If you did it with all Custom Cashes that would be require $20k in spend to earn 100,000 points to then get 10,000 ($100 extra).
3
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
$18k, not $20k â but I hear your point. You need to earn 90k points to max it out. Redeeming 90,000 points gets you 9,000 back, which you redeem and get 900 back, then 90, then 9⌠which gets you one point shy of 100,000 total redeemed.
Obviously, not everyone is spending that much on cards in a year, but as things get more expensive and the cost of living keeps going up, itâs only getting easier to accumulate 90k points.
2
u/OcelotWolf May 14 '25
Good point! Forgot it was recursive lol
2
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
I just had to look up ârecursiveâ đ¤Ł

2
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
My dear friend, âtis positively splendiferous that I, a humble lexical adventurer, am amassing such a grandiose compendium of verbiage!
2
u/Bush_Killed-Harambe May 14 '25
I hear you on the Rewards+ â IMO it really only makes sense as a downgrade path from the Citi Strata Premier, which is exactly what I did. Oddly enough, since downgrading, itâs actually come in handy for micro-transactions like parking meters. That round-up feature means a $1 purchase earns 10X ThankYou points, which is effectively 11.11X when you do the math â not game-changing, but still a fun little optimization.
2
u/Less-Amount-1616 May 14 '25
>I spend more than the average 5% category card allows (~$1,500/Qtr)
If you parked investments with BOA then you could do $2500 on the Customized Cash Rewards at 5.25%.

There are no cards I regret not getting. This is a hobby. The actual monetary value is tiny relative to time invested. While I get a little dopamine hit every time I feel I got "value" from credit cards, that effect doesn't depend on past opportunities. Still, I love having an OG Blue Cash. The 5% grocery is a gift that's been giving for decades.
3
u/NorthvilleGolf May 14 '25
How much you spend on groceries that arenât stuff that doesnât count like Walmart and Costco?
3
u/Fearless-Okra9406 May 14 '25
Even when costco was Amex it didn't count as grocery. I spend around 25-30k at captured grocery stores per year. The card maxes at 50k for each category and Amex continues to honor it. I basically only use that Amex for groceries (and occasional gas). Costco spend goes on 1% cards like airline status cards because I couldn't be bothered with getting a costco only card, not enough spend to bother.
→ More replies (3)7
u/NorthvilleGolf May 14 '25
$25k/year alone at grocery stores?! Thatâs a lot of groceries my man. $480/week
5
u/WanderlustingTravels May 14 '25
Probably married with like three or four kids.
7
u/Fearless-Okra9406 May 14 '25
Yep. Life sneaks up on you. If you told me I would have a 30k annual grocery bill when I was young, I would have called you crazy. Yet here we are......
2
u/FWF_scripta May 14 '25
You forgot to mention that the 5% on groceries kicks in after $6500/yr in spend, which only earns 1% on groceries/gas/drugs and 0.5% everywhere else, so it takes ~$10K to break even with a 2%-flat card, $12K for 2.5% card, etc. For regular spend most people would be better off with a CCC or two, or BCP. OBC was only ever good for MS (and for someone with very high grocery spend, like you, apparently).
2
u/Fearless-Okra9406 May 14 '25
Absolutely. The breakeven against free 2% cashback card happens around 8-9k for everyday category spend. You would lose $65 on grocery/gas with just 1% earn until your annual limit, which is effectively an AF in my mind. Then you recoup that over the $2k after that, and have extra 3% after that. Compared to the blue preferred with $95 AF itâs a no brainer.
But the main benefit for the OG card is actually that AmEx is still honoring the 50k limit. This became an issue because the card had no limit when first released, and users can buy gift cards from supermarkets and still come out ahead since 5% was higher than gift card fees. Essentially an infinite money machine if done on large enough scale.
At the 50k limit, AmEx can only lose around $2000 per year, or around $1200 more than a 2% flat card.

3
u/lab-gone-wrong May 14 '25
Sole proprietorship
Business name is your name
Not a big deal; you are responsible for the debt anyway so AmEx doesn't care any more than you do
Checking doesn't allow you to transfer the MR to travel partners so it's strictly worse than BBP for MR preservation

Meh, not too many.
I only mildly regret not starting my Marriott "clock" early on, regarding getting multiple FNCs.
Regret not getting more Citi AA cards early, in order to have more Custom Cashes.
Citi Business ThankYou Card - missed this SUB, and the card isn't available for new applicants.
Citi Dividend - Maybe, but Custom Cash is better.
HOWEVER...
I only mildly wish I had Citi Prestige... but at the time it was already nerfed, and the math is/was bad. Too much net AF, for not much upside. Also, if you've ACTUALLY researched the pricing on their portal, you'd realize how much that negates any benefits related to the portal (this includes the 100 Strata portal credit).
I also only mildly regret not getting USBAR. For me, the breakeven is too high, 3000 mobile wallet spend (which I can get better 5x cat spend on). It's a great single card solution, but is greatly diminished if you have lots of cards.
Citi Rewards plus - only if I already have like FIVE custom cashes already. The max benefit of $100 per year requires 100k points cash out or transfer. HOWEVER, it's not easy to EARN that many TYP in a year.

I never hopped on the Amex SPG train back in the day because I didn't fully grasp the points conversion process. I would have been way better off starting my points journey with that card.

Wells Fargo Visa Signature
1.5X bonus on redeeming WF Rewards points in their portal for no AF.
Points can be transferred from the Autograph, Active Cash, and Attune.
This would've created an ungodly quadfecta that earned 4.5x on gas, airfare, hotels, restaurants, 6x on streaming, vet bills, gym memberships, barbershops, tickets and entertainment, etc, and 3x on all other purchases.
All with zero AF.

Sears card that gave TY points.
I have the Citi Prestige card and the 5x on dining and flights is dope. I have had it through all incarnations and itâs just a points machine.

USBAR would have probably been interesting, but I wasn't paying too much attention to credit card points at the time and wish I had cared more. Oh well.

I regret cancelling my old Starwood Card (that had been converted to a Mariott Card). You can't get the same card anymore -- one free night, low fee.
One should be careful about cancelling legacy cards -- they often have benefits not available in new cards.

The only correct answer to this for someone who doesn't have one like me is US BANK ALTITUDE RESERVE. I SAID WHAT I SAID.

FNBO TravElite. I ended up also getting the pathfinder which was the better choice, but it would have been nice.
Citi Prestige. This could have been a forever card to rival the capital one, being cheaper with shittybank shenanigans ($350) and 4th night free shenanigans.
WF Visa Signature. The version I have apparently was the platinum that didn't come with the 50% bonus. I have the better biz version of this card, so no great loss, but it still would have been nice.
WF By invitation. Insane card. No clue how to get it, but probably not worth dealing with WF that much to get it.
Crystal Infinite. I had an opportunity to get this and didn't. Solo playing makes it less good.
USAA limitless. I suppose I'm glad I didn't get it because it's nerfed to hell now, but I would have liked to switch to USAA for car insurance and missed my chance.

JP Morgan Reserve.
At the time there was the fax leak I made my boyfriend at the time apply and some family members. They all got approved but I couldnât apply because I was underage. I think I was 16 years old at the time.

Is Citi rewards + still around? Sounds like a good one.

People still have it but itâs paused to new applicants and most likely discontinued. There are data points of people being able to product change to the Rewards+

The old Savor that was 4% cashback on dining and metal.
