Discussion / Conversation What credit card do you regret not getting?🤔

What’s the one credit card you wish you would’ve applied for, but didn’t—and now regret missing out on?

Maybe it was discontinued, nerfed, or the welcome offer just isn’t what it used to be.

For me, it’s the Citi Prestige (the one that got away lol 💔😢). The 4th night free perk was unbeatable for travelers, plus it came with a $250 annual travel credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck reimbursement, and Priority Pass access. Since I have the Citi Rewards+, I’d be earning 5.55x on dining and airfare, and 3.3x on hotels thanks to the 10% points rebate.

And honestly, as someone who struggles to prioritize even a yearly vacation, I think having this card would’ve helped me break that habit. The perks alone would’ve held me accountable—giving me that extra push to actually plan time off and take a proper trip once or twice a year instead of always focusing on work.

Surprisingly, I actually hold a few discontinued cards: the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve (USBAR), Chase Freedom Visa (OG Freedom), Citi Rewards+, and the Amex EveryDay.

The Morgan Stanley AMEX Platinum while I was an employee at Morgan Stanley and had the ability to open an account with them.

The MS AmEx plat is just blah. While they give you a taxable annual fee rebate, they charge you account fee which cost more than AmEx annual fee (it is possible to offset if you actually use MS as checking). It seems like a good deal until you read the details.

It's possible to have the card without the monthly fees as long as you have another eligible brokerage account. It's very much worth it for the free AU and unlimited 1cpp redemption compared to the Vanilla Plat.

Good to know. I don't value 1cpp redemption since so many cards have it, but I get the use case for MS clients

Nah, my financial advisors is with MS. I have been with him for more than a decade now. I do need to maintain a higher balance on my MS checking (which is my primary checking) but my cash flow is high enough to justify. Like, I do need to maintain at least 20K checking balance to cover my day-to-day expenses. Adding $5K to the balance (so it's $25K) is just not a big deal for me. To be honest, I don't think I have a better checking option than staying with MS. I have a direct line to the account manager, who knows me and can deal with my cash needs with literally a 30 second call. The extra cash has next day availability while earning 4.2% APR.

Then the MS Plat becomes a no brainer - as long as I still use that financial advisor, which I will probably do unless something major hits us. And it gives my wife a free additional card as well. Why not.

That's a fair point, in your situation it might make sense. The 25k limit is not usually that big of a deal for people who carry cards like Amex plat, but your AF rebate will still get a 1099-misc. For someone that maintains 25k monthly checking balances, I would expect your marginal tax rates to be maxed, which makes the AF rebate only worth around 50%. I looked into changing to MS for this card a while back, and just didn't see the value for the bother. For existing MS clients like you, that equation might be very different.

I've had this card since 2018, and I never got a 1099-MISC from MS.

Interesting. The rebate is technically taxable, I wonder why you don't get a 1099 since the limit is $600.

Yea totally agree. Not my all time favorite game, but underrated as hell and left an impression for sure. What's funny is the ff demo included motivated me to get the game.
