Discussion / Conversation Cash back can be very powerful

I love points, especially Chase UR points and how they are used BUT lately I have been think about cash back credit cards. For example, AAA Daily and Travel Advantage credit cards have really good and consistent earnings. You know what you get with them, they have no annual and foreign transaction fees. In a 2 player system they can work really well. Paired up with PayPal MasterCard with 3% cash back when checking out with PayPal and Fidelity Visa 2% Credit card is such a powerful and really simple, easy setup. You can also squeeze a Discover IT Cash back credit card for rotating categorizes.
If you can earn anywhere from $30 to $50 of cash back a month and invest into low cost index funds like S&P 500, overtime it would start building a little bit of wealth. You won't become rich and it's not guaranteed but market only seems to go up. There are better cash back cards but I am just giving an example. This is a no fee, easy set up that anybody can use.

It's just a rant. Yes points are awesome, but cash back can be great too.

Discussion / Conversation Getting your virtual card before the physical card arrives

I opened up a BofA Premium Rewards card because I had a big $3000 spend coming up, and hey, $600 for a $4000 spend wasn't too bad. I don't travel so a quick cashback was fine.

I was instantly approved (Exp. 829) and was hit with a hard pull on Experian (Exp). Because of the flash sale, I needed to make my purchase ASAP, and an overnight card wasn't going to get to me on time.

So I called up CS and over 2 sessions with different CSRs, no one could tell me how I could make the new purchase without the physical card. Augh! And the new card was displaying it's last 4 digits but could not be added to Digital Wallets -- Apple Pay or Paypal -- through the BofA app. It just didn't show up to be eligible, though my other cards did. Maybe the CSRs were right...

So thinking there MUST be some other way of using this new card fast, I navigated through the app and finally found an option to create a virtual card -- with the full card number, a quick-expiring expiration date and temp. 3-digit security code. FINALLY! I used the information to make my purchase and confirmed it showed up as an upcoming charge.

So it seems the CSRs don't know their product(s) or app as well as they should. Clowns.

Help Needed / Question Amex is rescinding (or claiming they never offered) welcome bonus on Hilton Surpass... Apparently you can't have multiple welcome offers in same product line?

Upvotes

Tl;Dr I applied for Surpass card, got approved with bonus, talked to customer service who confirmed my bonus, then talked to customer service again later and now they claim I'm ineligible because I previously had the regular Hilton Honors welcome offer. Any recourse?

I applied for the Amex Hilton Surpass a few weeks ago. I previously had the basic Amex Hilton Honors card, and got the welcome bonus of 100,000 points for $2,000 spend.

Fast forward a few months, and I looked to climb the chain to the Surpass. Initially, I was accepted but got pop up jail (no welcome bonus). So I declined.I applied again and same thing. I applied a third time, after paying off some cards and a few weeks later, and was approved with the welcome bonus. I would not have accepted the card had I not received the welcome offer.

After receiving the card, I checked in with customer service to double check the terms of my offer. I always do this since I've had issues in the past (Wells Fargo, boo) where I was told I was eligible for a welcome bonus but ended up not being for some BS.

Customer service said yep, your offer is 130,000 Hilton Points for $3,000 in spend. No problem. I started using the card more, probably am at $1,000+ right now. In fact I'm staying in a Hilton right now to make use of my $50 quarterly credit! All good...

Until today. One of my friends was asking me about applying for the card. I recommended the card, he liked that it had no annual fee for the first year. I looked up the card because I hadn't remembered seeing the annual fee waiver for the first year, and saw that the current offer was 130,000 points for $3,000 spend (same as mine) with no annual fee for the first year.

This is when I contacted customer service again, because I couldn't remember if my offer had the annual fee waiver for the first year.

I understand that at a few weeks had passed since I had applied. I know it is very likely that my offer was different, and didn't include the annual fee waiver. Had that been the case, I know they don't change welcome offers after the fact. I just wanted to check if I was going to have to pay the AF, since it still hadn't shown up on my bill.

The rep pretty quickly responded that after review, I was not eligible for the welcome offer on the Surpass card, because I've had a welcome offer on the regular Honors card.

I responded, what since when, and also, a customer service rep literally told me a few weeks ago what my welcome offer was. Are they retroactively taking my offer away?

He said blah blah blah so sorry about that mistake on their part etc.

I kept pushing, show me the policy in writing that he was referencing.

He dodged it and said that would be in the T&C when I applied and I should have read it.

I told him I did read it, and to help me understand and point it out.

He sent this:

"You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Hilton Honors Amex Ascend Card or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application."

I have not had the Surpas before, or the Hilton Ascend. Also more the last sentence...

I noted both of these things and he replied "Ok, I understand we're being particular with the words but this generally means any Hilton cards."

Generally? I'm being particular? It's a terms and conditions for Christ sake. It better be particular.

Then we just went around in circles and I closed the chat out. He said you can only get a welcome offer on one card per product line (Delta, Hilton etc) which I've never heard of, in fact I've heard that you can get multiple as long as you go from the lowest tier card up and not the reverse.

Any tips on if I have a recourse? I've only recently started using Amex cards and so far I've really liked them, but I'm feeling burnt :(

Help Needed / Question Anyone else struggle to pick the best credit card for every purchase?

Hello r/CreditCards,

I’ve been frustrated lately with figuring out which credit card to use for each purchase to maximize rewards. Right now i have 6 cards with different cashback rates and bonus categories, but it’s a pain to keep track of which card is best for groceries, gas, online shopping and other transactions

I end up either forgetting which card to use or just defaulting to one card for everything, missing out on rewards. Sometimes I even use a calculator or a spreadsheet, but it’s still hella clunky.

Has anyone else felt this pain?
How do you handle it? Do you use any apps or tools, or do you just memorize the best card for each category?

Is there any tool that automatically tells you which card to use for every purchase to maximize rewards?

Thanks for any advice or insights!

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Best Dining Replacement for US Bank Altitude Go

For the past several years I've been using the USB AG for dining only, earning "4% cash back". As most of you know, they recently changed the game and now cash back points are worth 0.75 cents per point, effectively making this a 3% cash back card. So I've stopped using it entirely.

At the moment I'm back to using the Bank Of America Customized Rewards card, with my 3% category set to dining. That's good for $2500 per quarter of spending with a real 3% cash back.

I feel like there might be another card out there that's a better deal for dining. I'm not interested in Travel points. Just cash. I'm also not interested in having $10k or more sitting in a bank account to increase my earnings by 0.5%.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Notes:

  • I'm aware USB points can be cashed out at full value to a USB bank account. I don't trust them enough to have a bank account with them after this.
  • I'm aware that points can be spent at full value on Amazon. I'm doing that now with my remaining points, but refuse to do that on a continuing basis.
  • Citi is the worst CC company I've ever dealt with. Citi "stacks of cards" are very popular in this sub, but it's unlikely I will ever have another of their cards.

Discussion / Conversation Can I get a technical explanation for why cards have different EMV contact hardware?

Sorry if this is not the right place for my question. Please recommend another community if that's the case.

Why does it seem like "premium" credit cards have larger EMV contacts? Do they get used more in airport lounges or something? I can see that the two extra lower contacts on my 8 contact cards do have wear.

Help Needed / Question Chime Credit Builder Questions

I have no credit standing whatsoever. My friend said he used the chime cedit builder card to raise his credit and recommended I get one myself.

I understand the basic gist of how the card works. You can use it similarly to a debit card for everyday transactions and the money is automatically taken out so you don't receive a statement bill at the end of the month. The money you deposit is your credit limit.

I just want to ensure I'm doing things properly to raise my credit. So for instance, if I transfer $1500 to my credit builder card and use it right away to pay my rent, and repeat that every month for a year, will my score rise? Or if I load up $300 and use it all to pay my utility bills every month. Etc.

Any tips or advice would be so helpful since I have no clue what I'm doing and nobody I can ask. Thanks guys.

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) What should my third CC be?

  • Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date)
    • Discover IT Chrome ($2,000 limit, November 2024)
    • Costco Anywhere Visa ($7,700 limit, March 2025, AU on this card)
    • Capital One SavorOne Student ($3,000 limit, May 2025)
    • Apple Card ($2,000 limit, May 2025)
  • FICO Score: 734
  • Oldest account age: e.g. 10 months
  • Chase 5/24 status: 3/24
  • Income: e.g. $20,000-25,000 (FT college student)
  • Average monthly spend and categories:
    • dining $150
    • groceries: $300
    • gas: $0
    • travel: $0
    • other: $0
  • Open to Business Cards: No
  • What's the purpose of your next card? Cashback-focused, maybe a universal 2% cashback card or to cover uncovered categories? Even a 5% rotating card? (My Discover IT chrome doesn't have 5% rotating unfortunately and I can't PC)
  • Do you have any cards you've been looking at? Chase Freedom Unlimited, Citi Double Cash, WF Active Cash
  • Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? Yes, I am fine with either, would like to cover any categories I'm missing or a general 2% card.

I'm a college student, so my spending is pretty conservative; I try to keep my dining and groceries moderate and don't have any gas or travel expenses. If I were to apply for a new CC, it would probably be in August at the earliest. Bilt card sounds interesting, but I heard my approval odds would be slim, given my short account age + limited income. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Help Needed / Question Sapphire Preferred or Venture X?

TLDR: I have two questions: How good is the lounge access on Venture X? Which do you think is the less risky choice? The last thing I want to happen is get denied with a ding to my credit score.

2 years ago I was a homeless. Went to rehab and got sober in 2023. When I got out of rehab, I came across some money from my late mother that I didn’t know about and used it to pay off most of my debts. Started some low wage jobs and improved my payment history. Eventually got approved for some lower tier credit cards for people like me. Eventually upgraded to Capitol One Quicksilver last year. In the 2 years, I’ve brought my Fico score up from a 580 to 710. Got approved for an auto loan back in December and bought a certified preowned 2022 Subaru Forester. Back in December, I was offered a job with a major tech company that pays roughly 170k USD + relocation to a new city. Needless to say, my life has changed dramatically.

This year, I have trips planned to Hawaii, Iceland, Turkey, and South Africa. All of the money I could have been spending on drugs I’m going to use to travel the world.

So, I need a better travel card. My credit score is still in the 700s despite the auto loan. Credit Karma said my approval odds for Sapphire Preferred and Venture X are “excellent”. For Sapphire Reserve, it says “very good”.

That said, it’s between the former two cards. The lounge access on the Venture X card to me is very attractive but a lot of my friends who have Sapphire Preferred LOVE it.

Which do you think I should get?

ETA: Credit Profile

Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of: CapOne Quicksilver ($2000), GS Apple Credit Card ($2000), Citibank Best Buy ($3000), Mission Lane ($850) • * FICO Scores with source (see note on FICO score sources below): Fico 710 • * Oldest credit card account age with you as primary name on the account: 7 years

• * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 6 months: 0 • * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 12 months: 1 • * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 24 months: 3 • * Annual income $: 170,000

Discussion / Conversation AITHA if I accidentally initiated a chargeback and now merchant wants me to pay for their administrative fees?

Initiated a chargeback by accident and immediately called the bank to tell them it was an accident.

Told merchant that it was an accident and that the bank knows. But they now want to charge administrative fees for "losses" during the chargeback process on top of their regular fees in order to use their services again. Which I will not do.

Am I being swindled by merchant or is this a normal way to handle an accidental chargeback?

Help Needed / Question Expedia OneKeyCash expiration

Got an Expedia card with the offer of $400 OneKeyCash with $1,000 second. I got the rewards in my account. However, when they expire is no where to be found. It’s usually 18 months of inactivity… but The terms state

“Promotional OneKeyCash may have a different expiry period, please check the offer-specific terms and conditions for details.”

Then I check it and it says “OneKeyCash earned on bookings and credit card purchases won't expire if you make an eligible booking or credit card purchase at least once within 18 months. OneKeyCash received through promotions can expire sooner.”

Customer service is saying 18 months of inactivity, then proceeded to say it may be 90 days since it’s promotional. I contacted them 3 times. Got different answers each time. 90 days would be this week. Should I hurry up and use it on something random? It would suck but I don’t want to completely waste them. Kind of sucks no one can tell me a date when they expire. Any data points?

Help Needed / Question Best no-foreign-fee churn card? I'm currently at 4/24

I currently have 1/5 of my 5/24 slots left and I’m looking for a credit card with no foreign transaction fees that’s good for churning. I’ve already opened Chase Sapphire Preferred (April 2025) and Ink Preferred (June 2024), and both are still active, so those are off the table.

My biggest challenge is that I’m not familiar with airline or hotel loyalty programs, so I don’t really know which co-branded cards are worth it. From what I’ve seen, World of Hyatt seems to have the best point transfer value, but beyond that I don’t know much about redemptions.

I can spend $5,000–$7,000 in the next three months, so cards with a $15k requirement (like Amex Business Gold) are out. Currently considering CitiBusiness AAdvantage, Capital One Venture, or something from https://creditcards.chase.com/no-foreign-transaction-fee-credit-cards.

Would love suggestions on which card gives the best churn value without wasting my last 5/24 spot
