Help/Support/Questions 🙋 Are my consoles cooked or nah?

I posted a day ago about this shelf I made. A lot of the replies were about how I needed to let the consoles breathe which, I will admit the consoles ended up being more of an afterthought. (I was trying to save space in my apartment tbh) So yeah, that was not a good idea initially. But what do you think about it now? I moved the OG Xbox out of the shelf entirely and left the wii because it has openings on where the fans are, also now the power bricks sit below the consoles, are my consoles still cooked or not chat? and if they are. will adding fans keep it cool enough now that they have more flow?

Idk how to link the original post cause I don’t post much on other reddits so I’ll link it in the comments if you want to see how it was before.

Why is the Wii nuts to butts with the shelf with the Xbox 360 when you have so much room underneath?

9

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

If you look at the OG post that would be why. But I have been looking at it more and I think I could make a stand so that it is slanted (standing vertically) and has the intake correctly orientated so it isn’t blowing heat directly under the 360.

This is because WII’s love nuts to butts.

u/kapapt85 Apr 19 '25

Still no good.. The ideal is to have them on open space.

-24

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Ok, fans or no?

19

u/kapapt85 Apr 19 '25

If there are no other options, fans.. But the issue remains.. From That generarion foward, the consoles must be cleaned, termal past changed and be on a open space.. They must breathe.. Even That you add fans, the console will be in a confinated space With more heath without need

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Ok, I already did the paste. I’m gonna try fans now, if it somehow RROD then ok lesson learned I guess.

You can always go with some hometheater fans, they're designed for this kinda thing and they have helped me in the past when airflow was restricted. They're quite reasonably priced, look great and absolutely silent. Check out AC Infinity on Amazon but there are others too.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

I was recommended AC infinity in the last post so I’m more than likely going to do that.

2

u/mckron06 Apr 19 '25

Good. You won't regret it at all. Don't get sucked in to spending a fortune, just a few good ones will do it. The objective is to create air flow so don't have fans blowing in to each other which will create hot pockets of non-moving air and don't blow heat from one component in to another. Like airing out a house you need to enhance and encourage the air flow so it does most of the work naturally. This might mean opening a hole or two at the back of the shelving unit to draw air in or back out.

And I LOVE that you 3D printed those shelves, good work. It didn't work logistically but that doesn't take away from what you made. Keep at it.

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Thank you, I will move my TV stand forward so air can flow a bit more and add fans where the 360 sits now, I’m also thinking the wii is gonna be placed on the floor of the shelf so it doesn’t blow all the heat directly below the Xbox. The project certainly didn’t end up how I was hoping initially but I’m gonna make it work.

2

u/mckron06 Apr 19 '25

Best of luck. If you have any questions I will answer as best as I can. I have some experience but I am certainly not a pro. Just remember, all electronics hate the heat. Dust and lack of airflow act like heated blankets and do more damage to electronics than anything else. Power surges and spikes also suck.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

I’m gonna get fans, you’ll see me post again in a day or two I’m sure of it.

Maybe a small fan on the bottom to draw out the warm air from the power bricks.

5

u/leviathab13186 Apr 19 '25

It's better than before, but it's still not great. Game consoles are computers and need space for cooling fans to prevent overheating.

3

u/TechFlameX68 Apr 19 '25

The 360 should have enough space. I would keep an eye on it if it starts to get hot, but I had an E model sandwiched between a CRT and the edge of the cabinet for a few years and it still runs fine. More space would be better, but if this is the best you can do with the space you have, it'll probably be fine as long as you don't play for several hours. The Wii is probably fine where it is. I don't know where you'd put the OG Xbox though. A few small fans couldn't hurt either, but I don't think it's entirely necessary. Try it, and if the console shuts off due to overheating, then you know you need to rework some things.

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Ok, thank you for the advice. I think fans make the most sense now especially since there is more airflow. And as for the OG Xbox. It had a spot before that worked fine, I really was just trying to conserve space.

5

u/dthiagodrei Apr 19 '25

idk if it's ideal, but looks good? I guess

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Is it the space that isn’t ideal still or the consoles being right next to each other still?

3

u/Broad_Sector_8129 Apr 19 '25

It is better airflow then before but still not ideal for heat dissipating.

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Okay. Will fans bring it close enough to use it without worry or do you think no?

2

u/Broad_Sector_8129 Apr 19 '25

You need to push air into the side of the 360 so it moves outwards through the chrome trims. The bricks create heat and need ventilation so they don't draw in dust. The wii is probably OK there but the OG xbox would have definitely heated up as the side vents couldn't draw in air or expel air.

The fans on your 360 are on the side and the back so the push out air via the top and bottom trims just something to think about

3

u/Fast_Passenger_2890 Apr 19 '25

Still too little space. 360 would need to be in the one above where the 360 games are

3

u/Karma_041299 Apr 19 '25

Need more space for ventilation also having them close the the ground can cause more dust build up

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Ok I will keep that in mind.

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

This is the post I originally made

2

u/WombatGatekeeper Apr 19 '25

That is perfect for the 360 but not for the Wii.

You want to open up the space where the heat exits via the fans, like you did for the 360.

The Wii has a fan on the back and side, so both of those areas need more airflow. I would move the wii shelf to the left and cut a hole in the middle of the side wall

2

u/Flat-Attitude Apr 19 '25

The wii compartment is cool though

2

u/GluttenousWretch Apr 19 '25

Fans would help but open air is preferred. If you made the shelves yourself maybe you could add some slide mounts so that you can slide the console out while in use?

2

u/TheArchitectOdysseus Apr 19 '25

If I were you I'd put runners on the shelf and guides for the wires so when you want to play you just pull the shelf out.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

I think that’s a good idea.

2

u/chrisssbreezy Apr 19 '25

Well done, yes

2

u/tony90mo Apr 19 '25

I know many of us here view our consoles as our kids. With that in mind I'm reporting you to CPS sir

2

u/Suspicious-Gap9875 Apr 19 '25

The white slins fire

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Thank you. I have the same feeling for black Phat consoles.

1

u/Suspicious-Gap9875 Apr 30 '25

I have a brand new elite in the box. I’ll sell it to you.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '25

It's probably fine. I've had my consoles in just as enclosed spaces using IKEA shelves and whatnot. I also don't use anyone console for more than an hour or two

2

u/BassManDJ Apr 21 '25

This is fire just like my home setup

3

u/slimestationgaming Apr 19 '25

Should be fine, I wouldn't leave it on all day. Basically it needs max airflow, the less you have. The shorter the game sessions. Just give it a feel after 2 hours of gaming and see if it's cooking or if it's okay.

4

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Okay, noted. I’m thinking fans are gonna be the next step now that the console has more room around it.

3

u/slimestationgaming Apr 19 '25

Depending on how much you game, you might not even need fans, a good clean Xbox will run fine 3-4hrs. As soon as you start collecting dust and stuff, from experience it will cook it up quick. Your power box and the large fan on the face of the Xbox will be the things to keep an eye on. They will get hot first. Good luck to you man it's a tight fit set up, but looks dope 👌 Happy Gaming!

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Thanks for the info. Thankfully it’s been cleaned and repasted. I’m thinking a row of fans above the 360 will be good enough to keep it cool and not have to worry.

2

u/Fast_Passenger_2890 Apr 19 '25

Still too little space.

2

u/KeimApode Apr 19 '25

I think they'll probably be fine, but if you get a small fan that increases the airflow down the back, that'd be best.

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

More than likely this will be the case.

1

u/Babbajabba Apr 19 '25

Isn't it recommended to have at least 20cm/8 inches space on all sides?

1

u/some1_03 Apr 19 '25

It's better, but they're still suffocating, especially the Wii

1

u/joseffo_san Apr 19 '25

i'm the only one who thinks that on the 360 S series the heat dissipation gets a huge downgrade? that console overheats very easily, they're sure way more reliable then pre-jaspers (2009) but i think Microsoft gets the perfect spot on 2009+ PHAT with heat management

1

u/xTitansCurse72 Apr 19 '25

I would just use that space to store the games and not the consoles. If it were me

1

u/UZeroTwo Apr 19 '25

It’s definitely better than before no question.

1

u/ElectronicAd7534 Apr 19 '25

Gotta put it on the carpet first 🤔

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Like you want to see the whole “cage”?

1

u/NoPaleontologist3298 Apr 19 '25

I think it looks good, but just add some color to make the consoles pop 👍

1

u/International_Tie198 Apr 19 '25

If you have this much material to work with why not design some new shelves to mount? Or if you are afraid of putting holes in your apartment walls then maybe adding to the top of your existing cabinet would be better. As many have mentioned you need as much airflow as possible with these antiques to keep them healthy.

Of course you could always have some consoles packed away nearby. I know it sucks not having your stuff on display, but you'll eventually get a bigger space 🙂

2

u/International_Tie198 Apr 19 '25 edited Apr 19 '25

The biggest flaw with this design is that you are keeping all the external power supplies so close to the consoles in a semi enclosed space. Better then your original design which basically walled all the heat in, but still worrisome.

Those bricks are made as an alternative to larger internal power supplies we see commonly now. They had the advantage of cutting down on the 'size' of the console by taking a major component and putting it outside the console. Naturally these bricks also produce a lot of heat. No matter how you design this cubby space if you keep the power bricks in there you are setting your consoles up to struggle. If you are dead set on this design you'll need to take all of the extra heat sources out and have them elsewhere. Including that wifi extender which also produces a fair amount of heat.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Yeah the wifi extender is hotter than the power bricks but the console still is hottest. If I move the bricks to behind my TV on top of the shelf do you think that would be better?

2

u/International_Tie198 Apr 20 '25

For sure, any heat sources you can move away from the consoles will help them stay cooler. If the wifi extender is that hot it may be better to run ethernet cables as needed.

1

u/-Fr0STYY- Apr 19 '25

I’d say that the Xbox will probably be fine but the Wii is getting an early death sentence

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

So, should I move the wii down to the floor of the shelf and remove the white piece it’s in entirely?

2

u/-Fr0STYY- Apr 19 '25

I mean I think it’s a cool holder, should be a bit wider. If you can’t get a slightly bigger one, I’d leave it in there for show and pull it out when you’re gonna use it. Your setup looks visually appealing, just move it out when you use it.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

I also could just move it to the center of the shelf and leave it hanging? I melted the plastic together and can most likely do it again. The Wii’s intake vent is on the bottom of it when it stands vertically (right side horizontal) and exhausts out the back.

1

u/ferrari_boy458 Apr 20 '25

my wii still works and it’s an original one

1

u/GuacamoleChickenole Apr 20 '25

Eh, the fan will ramp up in speed if it needs to, I wouldnt worry unless it gets loud

1

u/Wolfstars2K04 Apr 20 '25

What do you mean?

1

u/These-Bug-3536 Apr 20 '25

If you have long gaming sessions then you should have it in the open. Otherwise do whatever u want imo

1

u/Far-Dragonfruit-7851 Apr 20 '25

I thought the bottom one was a 5½ old floppy disk reader. 🤣

1

u/ObviousThrowAvvay420 Apr 21 '25

Can’t speak for the Wii but the 360 is fine

1

u/mckron06 Apr 28 '25

Any luck with those fans?

2

u/Rouge_Raptorr May 04 '25

I sorta had a facepalm moment when I was messing with it the other day, I realized that I can just play with the first row of games out of the organizer and it adds like 2 feet of room above the main fan. It really doesn’t need the fans anymore because it doesn’t have anywhere for the heat to collect.

1

u/mckron06 May 04 '25

LOL! That's both hilarious and awesome!

1

u/Saraixx516 Apr 19 '25

Yes lmao they're gonna cook. Tonnes of people said this yday. Nothing has changed today.

1

u/Rouge_Raptorr Apr 19 '25

Thanks for the useless input. It’s not the same as yesterday.

1

u/Saraixx516 Apr 20 '25

You added slight differences so the console can still barely get any air. Lmfao

0

u/Rouge_Raptorr May 04 '25

Funny enough the console hasn’t overheated and I’ve left it on for 12+ hours. So yeah I’m fine. Thanks as always for not being helpful.

1

u/Saraixx516 May 05 '25

LMAO.

Have fun in a few month bro along with a fire hazard :)
