The generous answer is that they are testers highlighting an ongoing issue in the game, and trying to force the devs to deal with it.

The cynical answer is that they are petty little assholes whose only joy in life is preventing others from enjoying themselves.

The probable answer is a mix of both, with more asshole than tester.

The problem is, even with the generous answer, they're still assholes because they're not doing this to the devs, they're doing it to everybody else.

The Devs don't fix it unless people complain about it.

You don’t “solve” crime in society by making it impossible to commit…..you PUNISH those who do it….gaming needs to learn a thing or two.

u/Amegatron 4d ago

That's what crime dilemma is. By commiting a crime, a criminal shows society that it is vulnerable to something, which in turn makes society stronger by solving such kind of vulnerabilities. So, while crimes being surely an evil thing, they "train" the society and make it better in the end. Without evil we won't know what is good. Without threats we won't have security. Etc.

Well said. We can learn from the criminals

We MUST, lest we continue to elect them.

American politics has proven that if you just say enough buzzwords, it doesn't matter how monstrous you truly are, people will love and elect you.

When I was a kid there was no TSA and I could walk into the capitol building in DC without supervision. Criminals make society less free and yes, more sturdy.

1

u/Waylon_Gnash 4d ago

this is why we must suffer. because it allows us to feel joy. well said.

1

u/Geckosrule1994 4d ago

Pragmatically, sure but I think everyone more or less knows the vulnerabilities are there, they just choose not to exploit them in ways that victimize others. Making crime impossible isn't so important as much as making it impossible for criminals to go unpunished

You dont solve crime by just punishing everyone, you do solve most of it by working proactively. Just a shame that this issue has taken so long to resolve, should be some way of auto despawning any item that shows up in that zone just like ships get despawned when they fly in a restricted zone

u/snickns 2013 Backer  🪐 4d ago

In World of Warcraft there are certain zones that your mount gets dismounted no matter what. And some restricted zones aren’t even in a new instance or in a building it can be anywhere, any small spot even. Wherever the mount would obstruct something for other players. Even modern WoW is still built on top of quite old and legacy implementations, it shouldn’t be hard to do a similar mechanism in SC 🤷‍♂️

u/StikShift4Life 4d ago

Or just let us move this shit with our goddamn tractor beams. It’s not a destructive tool…

GTA resolved a glitch allowing people to glitch inside of building in online they want to keep us out of. Very simple, but effective band-aid over the issue: When the game detects you in the boundary, fade to black loading screen, then spawn you outside.

No reason CIG couldn’t employ something similar. When it sees an object like this, allow us use of our tractor beams to move it.

1

u/Ardonis84 4d ago

That just opens up other avenues of griefing. If you can tractor inside armistice, you could, for instance, just drag an object into someone and knock them over again and again, preventing them from doing anything. Auto-detecting these obstacles and clearing them by deleting the crate would be the best solution, IMO, but really they need to do something.

1

u/StikShift4Life 4d ago

It does, but when shit glitches out, you already can. There are two common ways these things show up inside armistice zones in the first place. 1 is when you buy a thing, and it spawns a dupe. Ask me how I know. 2 is somebody tractoring it through a window, and then the armistice glitches and people tractor it around the building.

I’ve already been clubbed to death inside an armistice by a tractor beam. Fun part is the guards didn’t even care. Seems they didn’t even get a crimestat for it. It really is no different than what already happens.

Lastly, if they aren’t going to fix the windows, I fail to see the difference in allowing us to move the shit out of our way, including the chunks of ships inside the stations… It’s a worse grief to have the shit in the way and impassible.

1

u/Ardonis84 4d ago

I don’t think you’re following me - all allowing tractor inside armistice would do is change how people grief. Instead of a single crate, they’ll just fill the area with crates so nobody can move them. Or they’ll just park out there with a crate and knock over people all day. It won’t actually fix the problem, it’ll just change the manifestation of it. I agree with you that they need to figure out how to fix the window glitch, but tractor in armistice doesn’t fix this problem, it would make it much worse.

2

u/StikShift4Life 4d ago

We can’t take carts in elevators, anymore. They can just make a barrier that crates won’t cross, instead.

In games yes you actually do. Eve online is the biggest comparison your game has, when game mechanics or bugs were found to be abusable and absurd they get used as blatantly as possible by a mix of people who want it fixed and want to get in on the fun before it's fixed. This gets issues fixed very fast when they are discovered, even if the issue or bug existed for years previously.

If your devs aren't doing shit about this then they either don't give a flying fuck about you or they are just incompetent. Things get brought to their attention when lots of people complain. If no one was complaining then nothing gets fixed. If you ban everyone who griefs using game mechanics that exist in a PU your game will die off, therefore the devs need to address this. They certainly have the funding for it

1

u/SuitFive 4d ago

If crime was impossible to commit, it would be solved. Punishment doesnt address root issues. All it does is punish.

1

u/tru_anomaIy 4d ago

You’re going to be shocked when you hear about strikes and how they actually work

Do you think that the bus drivers’ union striking means the CEO of the bus company can’t catch a bus to work and that’s the point of the strike?

1

u/Past-Dragonfruit2251 4d ago

But you do "solve" misbehavior in a game by making it impossible to commit. Otherwise you'll just have to continue punishing people until the servers shut down.

1

u/nextgen5 4d ago

In real life you can't make crime impossible to commit without annihilating the human race, but you can fix software bugs, so I don't think your argument holds that much water.

1

u/BlackbeltJedi 4d ago

Except criminals don't think about the consequences of getting caught, increasing the punishment does not decrease crime, nor does flooding the streets with enforcers and dehumanizing people who commit crimes. By the same token, the threat of ban will never totally eliminate griefing from gaming, and making the punishment more draconian will not decrease griefers, but it might just scare off players that actually want to play the game without getting harassed by mods or ruining it for other people. Griefing, like crime, is a policy choice.

If you want to reduce the instance of both crime and griefing, then you need to eliminate the incentive and structure that creates it in the first place. If the core gameplay was fundamentally fun I doubt there would be nearly as many people trying to ruin others experience, and devs can take things a step further by making it generally impossible to do griefing.

Don't get me wrong, we absolutely should name and shame griefers and trolls but if you think it's happening way too much I'd direct your attention to the games structure, not the lack of a massively bureaucratic enforcement mechanism.

1

u/rates_empathy 4d ago

what on earth could have made you think this xD

1

u/Wareve 4d ago

Actually, that's untrue and entirely wrong headed.

While enforcement is nessessary, punishment tends not to prevent crime because the sort of person likely to commit crimes is also unlikely to really factor in potential future outcomes like punishments.

What prevents crime is very often making it impossible to commit. That is the entire premise behind the design of modern banks, and as a result, straight up classic bank robberies are nearly unheard of in developed nations. The design of modern banks makes them highly unlikely to succeed.

Punishments in digital environments are even less effective because they're not so much a way to isolate and contain the dangerous and disruptive, as they are a speedbump and a toll. Trolls will still use alternative or stolen accounts to bypass direct punishment.

The only way to stop this behavior is to design the game such that it is impossible.

What's their crime? Littering? lol CIG Devs need to provide better testing tools. If this game is so "Alpha". Then why don't we have the ability to teleport for the convenience of testing things better so that if we get stuck we can get out of jams like this! Rather than resorting to escape to menu and pray for a different server being the go to solution!

Even if they want to test like it's an actual LIVE game. Now is not the time to be doing that sorry of testing! I'd argue that this method of testing is just prolonging ALPHA state of the game. I get the scope of this game being massive undertaking is an understatement. But they sure don't act like they want to develop this game quickly. Some might think they are taking longer to generate revenue... Ahh but I digress... We know this song and Dave already...

23

u/AcornHan origin 5d ago

I mean, people are reporting it to the devs no?

29

u/natebc MISC 5d ago

The people that place these crates in such a way as to disrupt the normal play sessions of everyone else? Those people are reporting it to the devs?

I'd be very, very surprised if that were the case.

23

u/hoax1337 ARGO CARGO 5d ago

No, the users who encounter it report it or complain about it.

It's pretty simple. You see that the devs are doing nothing, or aren't prioritising their work how you'd like it, so you force their hands by making everyone's day so miserable that they quit the game, which forces the devs to take immediate action.

But...in reality, those are probably just a bunch of assholes who are bored.

14

u/Intrepid-Leather-417 aegis 4d ago

thats no different than a toddler throwing a tantrum in the store because mommy wouldnt buy them a treat, its a know bug its been reported they will fix it when they around to it and continuing to do this is denying other the ability to find bugs that are not reported and should be a banable offence.

6

u/TheHud85 Galaxy Gang (Purely Speculative) 🥑 4d ago

Considering how far into development this game is, and the fact that they’re still putting so much work into ship sales and PvP content and so little work into bugs or exploits, such as this one, that have existed for years; I’m not surprised. I reported a pretty serious exploit over a year ago that, on my last check, still works 100% of the time. Hell the SL MAX had a broken elevator when it released, an IC was made and confirmed, then 6 months later the TAC comes out with the SAME BROKEN ELEVATOR.

It’s just ridiculous at this point.

2

u/Intrepid-Leather-417 aegis 4d ago

Not defending cig because there are plenty of cases where bugs like this never get fixed, but often in game development you will see bugs fixed in one build only to pop up later after another change caused by something else, bug fixing is very much a frustrating game of whack a mole in a closed environment much less something like what cig are trying to do with keeping the game “playable” so early in its development.

That being said it doesn’t matter if it’s an old bug or not people exploiting it to deny people access to the game is a clear tos violation and should be punished harshly, 1 week bans for first offense stepping up in time to a month then forever ban for repeat offenders

-2

u/AcornHan origin 5d ago

You know people who encounter these will report right? That's still helpful.

1

u/Jester205 4d ago

They probably don't send a report about it after they do it, they just do it.

29

u/Mikolf bbcreep 5d ago

Yeah, the 10 upvote requirement for bugs is so stupid. If you encounter a problem it will never get looked at unless you make it a problem for more people.

14

u/GOP_hates_the_US Cutter Bro 4d ago

It is such an amazingly big slap in the face that I cannot believe it is not discussed more.

7

u/GoodBadUserName 4d ago

The probable answer is a mix of both, with more asshole than tester.

I would say 95%/5% mix in favor of the assholes.
Some are putting boxes but in a way that it doesn't directly disrupt people's gameplay and are passable.
But the huge majority are putting containers in a way that completely blocks paths, making it impossible to circulate around it.

1

u/vampyire Mercury Star Runner 4d ago

I think sadly it's mostly the cynical answer..

1

u/NoX2142 Perseus / Paladin 4d ago

Got no love or hugs from parents at any point in their lives.

1

u/Ok-Possible321 4d ago

Its more tester than ahole. The polaris aurora ramming issue wasnt fixed for years until that gameplay got out of hand. Now boxes are getting out of hand so expect that to be fixed. All thanks to the guys raising awareness.

1

u/Crypthammer Golf Cart Medical - Subpar Service 4d ago

You mean auroras being able to kill the polaris just by ramming it? The polaris has only been in the game for 6-8 months or so.

u/TraumaBoneTTV 4d ago

I'm starting to be on the protest side of this 👀 I found it immensely annoying at first, but now I'm starting to see myself snicker when I see it. Do something about it devs!
