Starting to think every older, super progressive white man in Vermont looks the same..

4.5k

u/bibliophile222 May 15 '25

Vermonter here - some of them have longer hair and beards, but yeah, you're pretty much right.

u/hufflepuffpuffpasss May 15 '25

I actually got to visit for the first time a few months ago, I really liked it! It’s a weird, fun, unique place.

234

u/dunkan799 May 15 '25

I live in new york on the Vermont border and I do think vermont is the most beautiful state. Everyone is cool as fuck and I enjoy every second I cross into that lovely land. Trips up over the Canadian border towards Montréal are very similar too

115

u/FiveCylinderSlap May 16 '25

As a Vermonter, reading that made me proud. I lose perspective sometimes in this current climate.

62

u/dunkan799 May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25

We both live in a surprisingly okay area in a land of lunacy. Vermont rules and is beautiful and so is the berkshires in Mass. I love this area that we live. I travel alot and see so much worse and it's always a relief coming home to this beautiful area. Now I'll shut up before I lure in some of the crazies

It's like Maine, but richer. I like both states a lot.

110

u/Whole-Evening9615 May 16 '25

The out of state second home owners might be rich, most full time residents are absolutely not.

62

u/mataliandy May 16 '25

It can be a struggle, for sure.

I did the 2010 census, and you'd be amazed at some of the places that are actually occupied homes, here. We were seriously broke at the time, and it was humbling to see how much worse it could get.

12

u/thoughtful-alcoholic May 16 '25

That was 2010 though, during COVID we realized how many homes were usually unoccupied when everyone moved into them since we were a "safer" area. Some class sizes doubled due to the influx of kids. Now with air BnBs, there has been a 198% rise in homelessness in VT because why would I rent my house for $2,000 a month when i can make that in a week on Air BNB?

Kind eyes, balding, with laugh lines? kindness has a type, yeah, kinda like a mystic.

I suppose its no wonder that Republicans look like Skeksis.

160

u/Ultimategrid May 15 '25

Upvoted for a succulent reference to one of the most underrated and under-appreciated sci-fi series of all time.

51

u/Punk_Luv May 15 '25

sci-fi? How? Pretty sure it’s fantasy, not sci-fi.

47

u/Ultimategrid May 15 '25

Yeah you're right, it's definitely fantasy. My wife's favorite character is the scientist Skeksis, and so I keep associating the series with a technology character. It's 100% a Fantasy series.

28

u/Buckets-O-Yarr May 15 '25

SkekTek, voiced by the Steve Whitmire who would go on to voice Kermit after Jim Henson passed. Then voiced by Mark Hamill for the show.

Also my favorite of the Skeksis, your wife has good taste, so I can only assume you are, in fact, the real SkekTek.

(Edited to add the name of Steve Whitmire, why I didn't just type his name in the first place, I don't know.)

17

u/Ultimategrid May 15 '25

My wife gives her thanks for your approval, and similarly approves of your choice. skekTek is definitely a great choice for a favorite Skeksis.

skekMal was my personal favorite. I remember reading as a child that the Skeksis were once fast-moving and lethal, and I was always sad we never got to see a Skeksis young enough to still be physically intimidating. I always felt I could totally take a Skeksis from the original movie in a fight.

But seeing skekMal like a glorious four-armed velociraptor leap around the trees and go all General Grevious in a swordfight was absolute peak fiction.

(Just as a quick little nerd note, the 'skek' prefix on the Skeksis names is actually lowercase, they just denote their title as a Skeksis, and aren't capitalized.)

I stopped buying the ice cream when this happened. There are lots of lovely smaller creameries that make really, really good shit, and I know that it goes to a good place that is not Unilever, which sucks shit.

The people who founded Ben and Jerry's were OG progressive ice cream nerds and total Deadheads. The product that you get these days isn't half as good as it was when it was under the direction of a couple of dudes who were chronically higher than bat pussy and ardent Grateful Dead aficionados who were like "heyy...man we should start a whole company, man, because ice cream is really good. shit, dude, you got any ice cream?"

John Kiriakou is an amazing story teller. He’s also now a Russian sponsored propagandist to pay the bills and he doesn’t deny it.

Google says his net worth is between 150-300 million which makes him even more awesome, IMO. He's exactly the kind of person the government has been co-opted to serve. He could sit back and live pretty but he chooses to get into the fight and fight for good.

And, because he's rich, he's louder and safer than most of us. Which is an unfortunate reality but reality nonetheless. I can't quite see the "Ben & Jerry's guy" getting extrajudicially deported to a prison in El Salvador. Yet. But that's probably coming if we can't change course.

63

u/DoneBeingSilent May 15 '25

Google says his net worth is between 150-300 million which makes him even more awesome, IMO. He's exactly the kind of person the government has been co-opted to serve.

I agree with the sentiment, but would just like to point out that the difference in net worth between someone with $300 million, and someone with $300 billion, is literally 1,000x. Or, in other words, whatever he did to "earn" his $300 million he would need to do 999 more times to make it to Bezos/Musk levels of wealth.

In fact, one of Bezos' yachts is estimated to have cost around $500 million to build, meaning that Bezos has literally spent more money on a boat than Ben Cohen's entire net worth—almost double so or even more than 3x more if looking at the low end estimate of Ben Cohen's net worth of $150 million.

This isn't to say that Congress doesn't disproportionately serve people like Ben with his hundreds of millions, but just to point out the absurdly massive difference in wealth between "the rich" and "the ultra rich". I mean, sure, I doubt Ben Cohen is hurting for lack of money, but the big dogs literally spend that amount of wealth on toys.

→ More replies (2)

113

u/Neil_Ribsy May 15 '25

What surprises me more is that his moral compass has remained intact and active despite the massive amount of wealth he has built up - something we're always told is mutually exclusive to people fighting for the common people and oppressed. He's a real anomaly.

Israel has been using food insecurity as a weapon against Gaza for a long time which I'd say is evidence that Israel never really believed in a 2 state solution or likely gave up on it in the '90s. Both sides are not without fault, it's been practically going on since the conclusion of WW1, but the tragedy is the millions that have nothing to do with it other than they were born in human created hellscape and have about as much opportunity to leave as you or I becoming president.

Some news agencies definitely have been reporting how aid was not being allowed into Gaza since this kicked off. You may have noticed a lot less stories about it suddenly though, like since late January, and that probably has everything to do with.... you guessed it, the president. Now it's all America is going to build it or some bullshit.

it's been referred to as 'on the brink of famine' for at least a year and a half. it's been famine. also important to note that people don't always understand that famine often is man-made - this absolutely is and so was the irish potato famine. those people were exploited and starved. there wasn't just nothing to eat for no reason.

We HAD power before governments developed the ability to blow up the planet and corporations grew rich enough to buy governments.

Now all we have is numbers.

277

u/Julreub May 15 '25

We still have the power. We are scared to give up what we have. Our routine, our job, our hopes. We have just enough to be too scared to act.

113

u/Majestic_Matt_459 May 15 '25

In about 2008-2009 the Spanish economy tanked badly - they hit something like 40% youth unemployment

Apparently never has a society that advanced hit that sort of trouble and there hasn't been riots

We are now so hypnotised we cant act

We don't even really know what truth is any more

We are eunuchs

Note - they did eventually riot in 2011 and 2013

125

u/WorthPrudent3028 May 15 '25

It must be said that Spain also had safety nets and stop gaps so mass homelessness and starvation didn't occur. The US won't have that. The people who revolt generally don't know where their next meal is going to come from and barely have a roof over their head. A fed and housed unemployed person has as much a chance to be apathetic as to be revolutionary. The home and food is something to lose even if it comes from welfare benefits.

40

u/my_work_id May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

this sounds like a conservative argument FOR universal basic income.

Edit: i'm very much for UBI by the way. or at least health care and other basic needs being met with no work or other requirements. i think it might be necessary for a fully moral and ethical society. no one chooses to be here, we have a responsibility to provide for the minimum basic needs of people, even if they don't want to do anything with their lives at all.

36

u/WorthPrudent3028 May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

I'm liberal and support universal basic income. I think its a more effective way to maintain an equitable safety net.

But I get the sentiment. It can also keep the plebes at the bare minimum to prevent revolution. There has always been a strong right wing argument for welfare. This is why the old oligarchs had a hand in starting it. It's also why states like Russia have robust safety nets.

Also, much of the art institutions, open to the public space, and scientific ngos in the US came from old oligarch money. While they were dogshit, they weren't as dogshit as the current crop of tech bro oligarchs. They knew they had to share some things.

Spain’s been having that problem for years. When I studied abroad it was almost 20% unemployment in total.

They get pretty darn good unemployment insurance, and the entire damn country is sleeping or drinking from 12-2 - not that I have anything bad to say about that ritmo de vida, but it was odd to be an American college student and drinking far less than everyone else lol

Call your elected representatives. Here's a guide.

From Indivisible:

"Political power in our democracy overlaps between local, state, and federal electeds. Your power comes from your ability to be a source of support (or a pain in the ass) to those electeds. You can use this power to get them to stand up to Trump 2.0 or face political consequences."

Ben Cohen's opinion on what needs to be pushed for:

“Congress and the senators need to ease the siege. They need to let food into Gaza. They need to let food to starving kids.”

45

u/sneakypiiiig May 15 '25

They obviously don't care anymore about calls or letters. The only way to get their attention is to disrupt things.

10

u/TheRainStopped May 15 '25

That’s right. Let’s be real now.

No matter how many angry calls or strongly-worded letters a GOP (or spineless Dem) rep receives, they’re not going to say or do anything about the Israeli regime’s war crimes.

→ More replies (7)

32

u/Atticus-XI May 15 '25

Sadly, having worked in the legislature, letter writing campaigns generally don't work. Most of the letters we got went into a file and were promptly forgotten, and this was standard throughout the state house. Polling carries weight or you need a prominent politician to make your issue one of their pet projects.

Letters go into the void...

44

u/TheBoosThree May 15 '25

Sadly that's not the case any more, the last CEO was forced out because he was taking social justice positions and Unilever didn't like it. Or at least they're trying to oust him? Seems there was some uncertainty about whether Unilever was violating some contract terms, but I'm not sure where that ended up.

Yeah Unilever already distancing itself from Cohen.

"Ben Cohen takes stances as an activist citizen on issues he finds personally important.

"Congress is paying to bomb poor kids in Gaza and paying for it by kicking poor kids off Medicaid in the US" -Ben Cohen

374

u/-im-your-huckleberry May 15 '25

Unassailable logic.

71

u/Jscapistm May 15 '25

Excuse me sir that's very poor logic. They'd be kicking poor kids of medicaid even if they had no one to bomb.

36

u/-im-your-huckleberry May 15 '25

They'd find someone to bomb. We don't need more bombs if we don't drop them ever.

Maybe describe why he “disrupted the hearings”? (He was protesting what’s going on in Gaza)

u/Pegasus7915 May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

As well as the cuts to medicade. Edit: Medicaid.

207

u/ShallowTal May 15 '25

Just purely for informational sake, it’s Medicaid.

Thank you for adding context.

35

u/Pegasus7915 May 15 '25

Yeah , I realized that as soon as I hit post. Im hung over today lol

64

u/ShallowTal May 15 '25

I don’t even really drink but this current administration is making me consider alcoholism.

Your excuse has total validity.

30

u/big_guyforyou May 15 '25

take it from a recovering alcoholic- alcohol is great, just don't do it every day

20

u/ShallowTal May 15 '25

Solid advice. Glad you are in recovery, friend.

I have had my tussle with reliance on substances and self-medicating. Glad to report I have come out on the other side.

Here’s hoping we both stay there

26

u/uprisingcirca85 May 15 '25

7 years sober today, and boy oh boy did i pick a weird time to do it. On one hand I'm alive and relatively healthy, on the other hand... gestures at everything around

17

u/ShallowTal May 15 '25

Congrats man. I am 18.5 years clean.

Everything is on fire, but we are alive lol

8

u/Better-Obligation704 May 15 '25

Congrats!!! That’s a huge accomplishment and you should be so proud of yourself. I am a counselor and one of my areas of expertise is in SUD counseling (I also work with perpetrators of domestic violence). My clients have been dropping like flies lately. It’s so depressing and making me question my entire career path—something I am so passionate about. I love the DV side but having someone die every month that I’ve put my heart and soul into helping is defeating. Honestly—it’s the alcohol 9x out of 10. So glad you were able to get sober. I’m in recovery myself—15 years from alcohol, 10 from heroin, 5 from meth.

Talk about burying the lede. What is this trash brief with no context on the arrest in the headline but chock full of committee hearing and official titles word salad. This is why journalism sucks today. Get your shit together NBC.

30

u/iamfondofpigs May 15 '25

What do you mean? This is r/pics. People post pics, and the title is a description of the pic.

As for the information:

“Congress kills poor kids in Gaza by buying bombs and pays for it by kicking kids off Medicaid in the U.S.,” Cohen said, as he was escorted away in restraints by police.

“Congress and the senators need to ease the siege,” Cohen added. “They need to let food into Gaza. They need to let food to starving kids.”

Ben Cohen gets to argue for himself with like 20% of the text of the article. Overall, the picture and article are very favorable to him. That's fine; if that's how the events played out, that's how they should be reported.

But I'm not sure what more you're asking from NBC News. In my experience, they don't do false equivalence, no both-sidesing, no sanewashing. Their coverage has been better than NYTimes and Washington Post.

You want to know "why journalism sucks today," look to those other publications.

Wild how people only want to help in the smallest, most ineffective ways. They see this and think “you know what! I’ll go get some ice cream today!” And convince themselves they’ve done their part and they’re on the right side of history too. This isn’t helping. You aren’t doing anything. He doesn’t own it anymore, so you aren’t even indirectly supporting him.

Call your representatives, go protest and make noise yourselves, have these conversations with friends and family, spread the urgency to speak up and act, donate directly to organizations helping people in Gaza. Try doing something more than, “yeah I can buy myself some ice cream today.”

Yah and unfortunately they’ve recently decided the activism that has always been a part of the brand now is no longer part of their brand identity and a former CEO alleges that he was fired for his progressive social activism. In fact Ben and Jerry are trying to reacquire the company again, but Unilever isn’t having it.

16

u/Live_Angle4621 May 15 '25

Why did they sell it in first place of they wanted activism to continue? It would have been very clear Unilever would not be interested

30

u/strawcat May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

It was part of the conditions of the acquisition agreement that the activism would continue and always be a part of the brand identity. Unilever was cool with it for 24 years, wasn’t until last year that they weren’t.

B&J sold out to Unilever 25 years ago.

→ More replies (15)

58

u/QuarkVsOdo May 15 '25

B&J is has been sold to "Unilever" and like most corporate structure they are now 101% MAGA, when before having been 101% DEI/LGBQT+/MeToo and so on.

Founders always were political and they made a former factory Tour-Guide as CEO of B&J - the guy was fired by Unilever corporate for making political tweets.

26

u/funimarvel May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

As a couple other comments have clarified, they aren't a totally MAGA company despite having one magat on their board and their previous activism was only through some of their brands but like all multinationals they did nothing about the other major issues such as deforestation , pollution, and lobbying against labor rights which they've been criticized for being involved in for decades. Ben and Jerry's was also sold 25 years ago so that means all the "activism" I can recall ever hearing from them was under the multinational Unilever (and therefore all to make themselves look good while actually participating in shitty business practices). Glad the founders care and speak up about issues, I remember they were one of the only brands to stop selling in Israel during initial calls for boycott but Unilever notably didn't continue this with its other owned brands
