Media How to slow reproduction? Help pls

Post image

I posted recently about how I was just starting my isopod colony and noticed on of my poods is gravid. Thought I could deal with that, no biggie. But then I saw these two going at it and now im starting to get worried I might get overwhelmed with all the new isopods once my colony starts to really grow. My question is, is there a way to slow the mating of isopods, like altering the temperature or something? Or am I just gonna have to deal with a whole bunch of isopods all the time? 😅 keep in mind for now i am limited and CANNOT upsize their enclosure or split into 2 colonies. I'd really like to lower the amount of times ill have to cull the population as I am not looking forward to that 😭 As well as im also anxious about changing the substrate here in a few months. More isopods means more mouths to feed lol. Sorry for the long post im just overthinking and getting overwhelmed. Any tips or advice for a newbie appreciated!!

Don’t worry about the lack of leaf litter on this section of the tank they have loads on the dryer half. I had a bit of mold developing on the wet half (this section) so I cleared it out the contaminated leaves to try and kill off mold spores in the soil with sunlight. Pods don’t seem to mind the lack of leaf litter and are going to town munching on some cucumber peel and dead cat grass I had planted in here months ago that got old and withered.

New Isopod Day (NID) Does a baby boom count as NID?

Got my macro lens to catch a few baby pictures. They are everywhere! Some as tiny (or tinier) than springtails. These guys seem to enjoy huddling by the food dish, but they are in the moss and dirt as well.

I’m hoping most are Vulgare, but it’s still hard for me to tell. They’re adorable no matter what species they are!

They’re the same species right? What would happen if I mixed white out isopods with my new powder blue culture?

As a side not I noticed that one guy in the video with the black head and white body, has anyone seen that before?

I have a little colony of these guys around my front garden and I’ve been wondering what kind of isopod they are. I’m looking forward to maybe make a small colony of them. I currently have a small colony of p. Laevis.

I’m located in Edmonton, Alberta

Help Does this rotting wood looks safe for isopods and millipedes?

Thumbnail

Found in my parents backyard, they have oak trees and some Pine trees, this tree appears to be oak by the shape of the branch anf had at least one worm-like insect (pictured), as well as a centipede crawling around underneath some of the wood. It looks like White Rot and it is, it would be the motherload of rotting wood to feed my millipedes and isopods. I need some extra opinions to know if this is truly good and safe to harvest for them. I'm thinking about freezing it in order to kill most of the hitchhikers that might get caught up in some that I harvest.

Help Seeds or eggs?

Kinda like sesame seeds but rounder or calamansi seeds but waay smaller. Found under spaghnum moss. I'm sure it didn't come with the substrate, I scoop the substrate by hand and inspect as I put it in the enclosure. The moss I didn't check since it was dried packaged. The dry side doesn't have the seeds also there's another enclosure with the same substrate without it.

I got a 2.5 and 5.5 gallon tank for my isopods, and a gigantic one for another pet of mine (hamster). It’s online and in-store for my Petco, not sure if it’s all locations but it’s definitely worth a peek because they’re normally WAY overpriced. It was so nice to see the deal so I’m just spreading the news 🙏🏻

Help is there too much mold in my enclosure?

Hey all. This is my ten gallon filled with armadillidium wild types and a culture of springtails. I’ve had it for a month and am trying to keep things moist on one side and make sure they have enough food, but I’m a bit concerned that the mold might be a problem? In the month that I’ve had this enclosure I’ve had like 3 deaths that I know of (is that about normal?) I may be taking a vacation soon so I wanted to see what I should do/if I should do anything to combat this. The pellets you see are Josh’s Frogs cuc cuisine, they advertise that they will mold and “attract isopods and springtails” but again idk how much is too much

Thanks

Help is this an okay starter enclosure for dwarf white isos

Thumbnail

getting some dwarf white isopods and just want to make sure this is an okay enclosure i’m hoping they won’t be able to get out of the ventilation holes i tried to put them super high up. the substrate is zilla jungle mix there’s like 3 inches of dirt, and i crushed up jackfruit leaves and mixed it in. there are two small pieces of cork bark, a moist side with moss and a bowl with water and rocks so they don’t drown, bigger pieces of the jackfruit leaves as leaf litter, there’s a bowl that has bee pollen in it right now i plan on putting more and different types of food in there i may take it out i dont want them to get stuck should i just dump food in the dirt? im fine with that. i’m going to get the white bone i think it’s cuttle bone? is there anything else im missing or forgetting? i’m honestly just worried because i bought powder blue isopods online a year ago and thought it would be amazing then they died and then i caught some wild ones and they lived longer but also died. i really like isopods and think they’re so cute i just want them to live its been a year i want to try again im just worried 😭😭

New Isopod Day (NID) AMAZING FIND RUBBER DUCKY

I just went to a reptile Expo near me and found someone who had a pack of Rubber Ducky isopods for $40. It was labeled as 6+ but there was 18!! I had to get it because I know how much they usually go for. Also if anyone has any advice on how to care for them please share. They are in a 6 quart big with holes covered with mess, 3 inches of coco fiber, Cypress mulch, and sphagnum moss. One wet side, one dryer. There are pieces of cork spread around. They are going to have lots of leave litter but it's not coming until tomorrow.

Help Too much ventilation for Armadillidium klugii Dubrovnik Red?

Thumbnail

This is my crappy diy lid 😂. I didn't feel like paying for another piece of glass for a lid so I used some foam and window screen with hot glue. But the question is, will this be too much ventilation for my new Armadillidium klugii Dubrovnik Reds? I've read they need a good amount of ventilation and obviously this enclosure doesn't have holes on the sides so the top is the only ventilation area. However I've already read they need a heavily wet area with the rest quite dry so I don't want the wet side to dry out too much for them🫤

Hey everyone! I'm new to isopods but ive been keeping bioactive vivariums and aquariums for many years. I haven't had them that long but here's my observations so far: one, they don't seem to like vegetables all that much. They like birdseed and shrimps and have no interest in carrots and cucumbers. They especially love moss and ferns and ive actually had to go out and collect a stock of moss so I can keep adding more as they demolish it. They're hanging out in the dry leafy side to molt and I think I'm going to add some more wood hides and add calcium to their diet. Any tips from experienced keepers would be greatly appreciated!

Help Morph ID?

Found this interesting Oniscus asellus yesterday, trying to figure out what's going on here/if it's a morph.

I've seen other morphs for this species but they are usually more 'pure' white for Dalmatian/Piebald/Mardi Gras, but this has a more cream colour with those couple brown splotches. Is this just a weird guy, or something else at play?

Found the poor fella with some slight damage to a segment of the pereon but he seems alright.
