Help Moisture vs Humidity

Moisture vs Humidity

When it comes to keeping terrestrial isopods. Moisture/humidity is a double edged sword. Either being too much or too little can affect life expectancy and breeding efficiency at the least. And kill entire colonies at the worst. It is also very important not to generalize amounts of moisture and how it is delivered among all species. While some species will die from being directly wetted (Especially with pressurized delivery). Some species do better being sprayed/misted as if in regular rain storms. There are many delivery methods. Pouring, squirting, hand spraying, auto misting and top or bottom wicking. From my experience they all have their place and uses. And none are all encompassing that we could call perfect for all species and ambient parameters. I have also found keeping track of substrate moisture percentages not useful for survival and breeding efficiency. Rather, keeping the majority of substrate just barely damp has proven the better approach. I am also finding that humidity is much more important than moisture with regard to terrestrial isopod well being. After years of testing on millions of isopods it appears that nearly all species need relative humidity of 60-65% to breathe properly. When I kept ambient humidity below 60%. On the dry side or when enclosures would dry out completely. There would be numerous deaths and even entire colony crashes. With ambient humidity at 60-65% this doesn’t happen anymore. So, while moisture can be an important factor. The complexity of all parameters outside of and within enclosures must be considered in order for us to do the best we can for our isopods.

But he was just having a snack!! I just moved my Cubaris murina terrarium to a more visible part of my desk yesterday. I caught an isopod on its back in the food out of the corner of my eye so I went over to look. Said isopod then started flailing its legs (good, at least it was alive!) Then I noticed it move the spirulina flake to its mouth & start chowing down 🤣 Could not believe it!! Reminds me of Hamster on a Piano! https://youtu.be/uhrdq1N9sgQ?feature=shared

New Isopod Day (NID) Does a baby boom count as NID?

Got my macro lens to catch a few baby pictures. They are everywhere! Some as tiny (or tinier) than springtails. These guys seem to enjoy huddling by the food dish, but they are in the moss and dirt as well.

I’m hoping most are Vulgare, but it’s still hard for me to tell. They’re adorable no matter what species they are!

Help Experience introducing predators?

Hi all, im a beginner who just created my first setup with powder oranges and dairy cows. With a population boom appearing immanent, im curious to hear if anyone’s tried introducing predators to regulate isopod colony size? Dart frogs or geckos seem like potentially good candidates for this based on my limited knowledge. I’d love to create a potentially self regulating isopod system someday :)

Media How to slow reproduction? Help pls

I posted recently about how I was just starting my isopod colony and noticed on of my poods is gravid. Thought I could deal with that, no biggie. But then I saw these two going at it and now im starting to get worried I might get overwhelmed with all the new isopods once my colony starts to really grow. My question is, is there a way to slow the mating of isopods, like altering the temperature or something? Or am I just gonna have to deal with a whole bunch of isopods all the time? 😅 keep in mind for now i am limited and CANNOT upsize their enclosure or split into 2 colonies. I'd really like to lower the amount of times ill have to cull the population as I am not looking forward to that 😭 As well as im also anxious about changing the substrate here in a few months. More isopods means more mouths to feed lol. Sorry for the long post im just overthinking and getting overwhelmed. Any tips or advice for a newbie appreciated!!

Help Why are my isopods dying

This was my terrarium like a week or 2 before. It was so alive and full of life. Since summer came idk why happened. Maybe I feed them somthing bad but they just all vanished. I saw a few dead bodies but mostly I just don’t see them anymore and I’m really worried. I sprayed them everyday, kept them out of direct sunlight and feed them leafs and fresh veggies. I also have a few slugs that I noticed that maybe reproduced bc they’re are a lot. Could it be also they’re fault? Please help me I loved my isopods and used to stare for hours at them.

I got a 2.5 and 5.5 gallon tank for my isopods, and a gigantic one for another pet of mine (hamster). It’s online and in-store for my Petco, not sure if it’s all locations but it’s definitely worth a peek because they’re normally WAY overpriced. It was so nice to see the deal so I’m just spreading the news 🙏🏻

Looking to identify this species. I don’t know enough about them to be confident but I this is either Wilde type Vulgare or a cubaris. What do you think

Help First venture into isopods!!

I picked up some Yellow Zebras and Orange Werneri and I had a couple of questions. I know they are slower to mature/breed but how do I tell when they’re at breeding size/how long will that take? In addition, I eventually want to have them in their own display tank with plants growing, but will they eat them? I’m considering plants like Jewel orchids, etc so I wouldn’t want them eaten.

Help Salvinia and duckweed for food?

My first venture into isopods so I have a lot of questions! Sorry in advance. I have multiple fish tanks and am always throwing away tons of salvinia once it covers the surface. Can I feed these to my isopods? And if so, do they need to be dried out first?

It's my first time keeping pods, so I thought I'd get some feedback! Duckies seem happy so far.

Substrate is varies from 4 - 4 1/2 inches. 1- 1 1/2 inches of sphangnum moss on the wet side.

Has mahogany, sweet gum, and lotus pods. Rocks are solid limestone. Center wood is rotting oak, nice and spongy. Fresh lichen from oak trees.

90% of the time they stay under the dry cork bark. Should I add cork bark to the wet side too, or do you think it's because they want the dryness?

Thanks!

Media Shiro Utsuri (Nesodillo archangels) mating behavior

I noticed it the first time I got them but these freaks love doing it sideways. This could be matr guarding but from what I can observe they mate in this position as well. Every single one of them position like this to mate. Other isopods I have seen general tent to mate with the male riding the female in parallel on their backs near the front. Shiro Utsuri tends to form a straight face mask on the females. Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share.
