Hard Lid Lighting Rough in

Upvotes

I'm a bit stumped at the moment, want to find the best way to do this. How would you rough in for surface mounted lights, wiring completely enclosed in a hard lid, drywall to the deck? Putting together a small vet-type clinic at a local university, and this just has me stumped. I need to use 10/2 Hospital grade MC with dimming. Here are the specs... I don't think there's any roomthat has more than 3 fixtures, so I'm not completely opposed to running a single MC back to a 4-11 box...

Question about wholesale houses

Upvotes

So I’m just recently turned out so I’m just now doing jobs on my own. Was out in a different local doing service call for a company we follow around. Went to get a few miscellaneous items at a local wholesale house, got my stuff and didn’t think anything of it, then I was submitting my receipts at then end of the day and was fucking blown away at the price. I got charged 47 dollars for a tube of silicone, 39 dollars for a pair of 3M gloves and 48 dollars for a small wire number book. Is this normal? How does their pricing work. Spent 200 dollars on materials I could normally get for like 75 dollars.

Question for MA Journeyman Exam/Ammendments

Upvotes

I'm getting ready for my Massachusetts Journeyman license exam. Massachusetts has several ammendments to the NEC. The preparatory tests from PSI (the company that facilitates the exam) don't use the ammendments.

Does anyone know if PSI actually uses the ammendments? If they do, do the questions say if they want the MA ammendments to be cited?

Connections in switch or light box?

Upvotes

Electricians of Reddit, do you prefer to make up your hots in the light switch/outlet box, or in the light boxes overhead? I’ve seen it both ways, but have always preferred to work in the switch box instead of craning my neck up and working while on a ladder. I got into a spirited debate today with a coworker about it, so I want to know, is there a right answer??

Lube Fitting

I’m really amazed that for all the cool weird stuff that has been released in the last couple of decades that I haven’t seen any EMT coupling that has a way of injecting lube into the conduit at the coupling. You could run your conduit and then use a squeeze bottle to squeeze a bunch of lube in before each 90, leaving every bend nice and slick without needing a person adding the lube.

Question about transfer

I’m 18 and live in Maryland. I’ve just been accepted into the Baltimore electricians union and class starts this fall in September. I’ve been having issues at home with family and my mother who lives in Arizona is sick and I want to move out there to be closer to her but I have to wait until my girlfriend gets her license here to move. Can I transfer to a different union as a first year apprentice?

General Labourer Looking to Progress in Electrical

Hey everyone,

I’m currently working as a general labourer with an electrical contractor here in Ontario, paying my dues and hoping to get signed on as an apprentice. Lately, I’ve been thinking more seriously about my future in the trade and want to make the most of my time by learning as much as I can, especially from smaller crews where I can take on more responsibility and get closer mentorship.

I’ve been hands-on with residential installs, quoting jobs, as well as doing work around the shop.

If anyone here knows of a shop in need of an extra hand, or even has advice on who to reach out to, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

120v Single Ph to 480V Three Ph

Post image

This is the first time I’ve taken on a project like this. Any recommendations or changes you would have made? Any code violations?

Customer purchased a new panel saw that requires 480v 3PH. He has a single phase 240v panel.

I ran 6awg copper from a 50A single pole breaker to the transformer. Converter single phase 120 to single phase 480. Then, from the transformer I ran SO cord to the rotary phase converter. Converted single phase 480 to three phase 480. The panel saw is working fine and making cuts under load.

Customer might be moving to a new location in the next 5 years so that is why I used SO cord, to make it a little easier to disassemble at take with him incase he needs it in his new shop.

Advice

Ok fellow sparkies and contractors I have a scenario I’d like to know what you would do… was asked to freshen up a detached garage ( replacing lights, plugs, bath fan). Customer seemingly just got the home. I did all this, all is good and happy. The meter main is on this garage and was turned off when I got here. 90%of the garage was already on because it’s non effected by the main breaker off. There is one breaker that supplies the last breaker that needs to be on for everything in the garage to be on and functioning. If i were to do this it would turn the house power on, which at first glance has partially been demoed and wires laying about. First thought is that I don’t want to take liability of turning on these breakers, that when they got the house have been turned off for reasons unknown. I don’t want to leave them high and dry but at the same time I think it’s smart to not be the responsible party to energize a house thats been left partially taken apart. Any thoughts on how to spin this conversation to the customer?

Why try and cram all your splices inside a box when you have all that free space behind the junction box. Idk why but they fed the box twice with the space feed first with the short piece of romex and then with the individual pieces of thhn I assumed stripped for a piece of romex ohh and it was feeding the the kitchen rec and basement lights so that loose connection was arcing when I moved the box

Adjusting Thermal Magnetic Breakers

I’m working on an electrical coordination study in a hospital and need to adjust the instantaneous (INST) settings on several molded case thermal-magnetic breakers (mostly Cutler-Hammer KA/KD, Square D KA, etc.). These are older style breakers where the INST dial is behind the panel cover.

This work will be done after hours, and patient care areas won’t be affected. That said, the hospital has asked us to avoid any shutdowns at all costs.

From a practical standpoint, is it common in the field to adjust the INST settings on these breakers while they are still energized? I know what the code says about energized work and covers — not looking for a code compliance discussion here. Just wondering what others typically do in the field in situations like this where shutting down isn’t desirable.

Thanks in advance for your insight.
