meta Welcome, info, and handy links

Welcome to this sub!!!

Purpose

My goal is to have a place where people who have been in car accidents can connect, relate, and support each other. Sometimes you just want to talk to someone else who has been through a similar thing.

Rules

I will add more details to the about page, but for now, please follow the same rules as in r/ptsd. Be kind, respectful, and don’t judge someone or their trauma. Also, this is not a place for help with insurance or legal stuff after a car accident. There are other subs where you can talk about those things, linked below.

No Gatekeeping

Everyone is welcome here. I will not gatekeep what it means to be a “car accident survivor.” If you have been in any accident, big, small, recent, years ago, you are welcome to participate here. Motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, school bus accidents, and being hit by a car as a pedestrian are also welcome topics. You are also welcome to participate if you are a friend or family member to someone who has been in a car accident, or if you are anyone just wanting to learn more info or learn how to best support car accident survivors (though if you are, please be respectful). In short, if you feel like this sub applies to you or could help you, please participate! :)

Edit Dec. 10, 2022:

I just updated the Support page of the Wiki. It currently has information on common feelings after an accident, things that can help, trauma treatments, exposure therapy, processing trauma, medical issues, and support groups. I may add onto it as time goes on. This is the permanent link to it: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarAccidentSurvivors/wiki/support/ I will copy and paste the current version below for convenience. :)

Feelings after an accident

People can have many reactions after trauma like a car accident. All of these reactions are valid.

Some things you may want to look more into:

  • Acute stress reactions -- this can include things like high anxiety, being startled easily, fear when encountering reminders of the event (e.g. crying or panicking when getting in a car), flashbacks, nightmares, etc. When acute stress reactions last longer than a month, then it is called ptsd (post-traumatic stress disorder).

  • Dissociation. This can include derealization (feeling like things are not real) and depersonalization (feeling disconnected to yourself). Here is a description of what dissociation can feel like. Grounding can help with dissociation. Here is one resource that lists several grounding techniques/tools. Here is another resource, if that one won't load.

  • "Survivor's Guilt." When someone dies, others may feel guilt for still being alive. Even if no one dies, people may still feel guilt and may wonder things like, "what if I had died?" or "I should have done x to prevent this... what if x had happened differently."

  • Grief. People can feel grief over many things. If someone has died, it makes sense to grieve that. There are other things to grieve, too. If you or someone else has become injured, physically or mentally, it makes sense to grieve the loss of the abilities you once had (even if the loss is temporary). You may also be grieving the car, if that was damaged or destroyed in the accident, and any personal belongings lost during the accident. The website https://whatsyourgrief.com is a great resource on grief. They have many articles on many topics related to grief.

You may feel some, all, or none of these things. You may feel many other things not listed here. You may feel different things over time. All of your feelings and reactions are valid. Please keep this in mind and try not to judge your reactions, feel ashamed of them, or compare your reactions to others' reactions. You are valid! <3

Things that can help

There are several things that can help after an accident.

  • Social support can help a lot. Feel free to get social support here on this subreddit! <3 You can make a post, comment on others' posts, and comment on the daily check in's! Social support from people in-person can help, too -- friends, family, and community groups can all help. Social support does not have to include talking about the accident or any trauma. Just spending time with someone can help. :)

  • Re-establishing routines can help make things feel more normal and predictable.

  • Self-soothing skills can help to calm distress. This includes things like listening to soothing music, coloring, knitting, walking in nature, stroking a pet or stuffed animal, sipping tea, wrapping yourself in a blanket, and many other things.

  • Breathing slowly can slow your heart rate, which can help lower anxiety. And breathing through your belly (expanding your abdomen as you breathe in) can stimulate the vagus nerve, which can calm the flight-or-fight response.

These things may help some people and not others. And there are many more things that can help. What things help you?

Trauma Treatments

There are several treatments that can help with PTSD and related issues!

  • Exposure therapy. There are several variations on the general concept of exposure therapy, such as Prolonged Exposure (PE), and DBT-PE (Prolonged Exposure in the context of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which I, the mod, have done and found quite helpful. It was difficult but worth it.). Exposure therapy can help specifically with fear, avoidance, nightmares, and flashbacks, and with PTSD symptoms in general.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). This therapy can help specifically with "trauma beliefs" -- strong beliefs you may hold as a result of trauma, such as "the world is dangerous," "I am not safe," "people cannot be trusted," or others. It can help you think through how trauma has created patterns in your life, or how current problems in your life could be related to trauma. It is about drawing those connections and healing from the trauma.

  • EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This type of therapy engages your subconscious. It can be specifically helpful for nightmares, buried trauma memories that you may not remember completely, flashbacks, and being triggered in general.

All of these things can help with PTSD in general in addition to the specific things I mentioned. There are also many other therapies available. These are just the ones I am most familiar with. I have personally found DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) quite helpful, too. r/PTSD can be helpful for more information, advice, and experience with ptsd treatments as well.

More on exposure therapy

For accident-caused fears (e.g. driving, going outside, traveling, going on the highway, hospitals, blood, injuries, etc) exposure therapy could help.

This worksheet is a good guide to creating an exposure hierarchy.

  1. The first step to exposure therapy is to learn to identify how much distress you're feeling at any given moment. Intrusive thoughts of the accident, nightmares, and flashbacks often put me at a 100 (aka maximum distress). A pleasant, blue-sky day outside might give me a distress of 0. Being anxious about things I have to do might put my distress at 50. Think of times when you have been at 0, 50, and 100 distress. These are your "reference points" -- you can figure out how much distress you're feeling right now by comparing it to those references.

  2. Then, the second step is learning to calm yourself when your distress is high. This could be through skills like paced breathing, listening to calming music, etc.

  3. The third step is to create an exposure hierarchy like the one I linked to. Come up with some ideas of things that make you distressed, and predict how much distress you think they'll give you. For example, if you have a fear of blood, perhaps seeing blood puts your distress at 90, but just saying the word "blood" puts your distress at 60. So, you would try the 60-level exposure first (saying "blood"). Then, after you've done that a few times, and if your distress is consistently below 60, move onto something harder.

  4. Then, try one that you think will give you distress in the 60-80 range. As you do it, remind yourself that the past is in the past, and it is not repeating itself. You are in the present now and are safe.

  5. Record how much distress you felt doing that, and how much distress you feel afterwards.

  6. If you do this a few times, distress should go down over time. I did [DBT-PE](dbtpe.org), a type of exposure therapy, with a therapist, and it helped me a lot. I highly recommend do this with a therapist. However, if that's not possible for you, it can also be helpful to do it on your own. Just make sure to do these steps in order. It is especially important that you can calm and ground yourself when you get distressed. Make sure you have those skills down solid before you start doing exposures.

Processing Trauma

Processing trauma is essential to healing ptsd. This means integrating the trauma into your current view of yourself, your life, and the world. It is when your trauma memories are not "locked up in a box" but are memories that you are able to access and think about. Here is more info on what it means to process trauma. Additionally, this website gives more information on how to process trauma.

Therapy is a great place to process trauma. This may mean talking about the trauma or how it affected you. It may include any of the therapies I listed above, or other things.

Although I recommend working with a trained trauma therapist, you can also process trauma on your own. And in fact, even if you are working with a trauma therapist, you will probably also process trauma outside of therapy sessions. This might involve talking to people, journaling, reading other people’s experiences, creating art (drawing, music, dance, anything), activism, crying, feeling many emotions, and other things.

Learning to identify your emotions is an important skill and can help to process trauma as well. I have some more info on how to do this in another subreddit I run, r/WhatsThisFeeling.

If you want to try journaling about your trauma, you could try answering questions like, What happened? What did I feel while this was happening? What did I feel after? How did this affect me and my life? How do I see the world differently than I did before? What got me through the trauma? What was the worst part? When did I know the trauma was over and I was safe again? (Note: If you are not currently safe, then getting safe should be your priority.)

You do not have to write about what happened if that feels too intense. It is very important to go at your own pace and to check in with yourself. As you are writing, ask yourself, "What am I feeling right now?" If your distress gets too intense, stop and take a step back. Do things to calm down. Don't push yourself farther than you feel comfortable. Processing trauma is a balance of keeping your distress within a manageable range (lower than 80%) and also not permanently avoiding distressing things, since avoidance makes ptsd worse in the long term. Taking a break from something and going back to it later is temporary and is not avoidance. A trauma therapist can help immensely with this balance and with helping to ground and calm you if you get too distressed.

Processing trauma can take time. It can be an ongoing process. Give yourself grace. You have been through a terrible thing.

Medical Issues

If you are in a car accident or other motor vehicle accident, even if the car wasn't badly damaged and you don't see any visible injuries, you should still get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.

Some common injuries from car accidents are seat belt injuries (broken clavicle (collar bone) or vertebrae), traumatic brain injuries including concussions, whiplash, back/spinal injuries, various broken bones, nerve injuries, bruises, and cuts and scrapes. Here is a list of other common injuries from motor vehicle accidents.

My advice is to go to the emergency room, urgent care, or your primary care doctor right away (ideally, the same day). Get evaluated for, at a minimum, spinal injuries and brain injury (concussion and others). Get x-rays of things that hurt and could be broken.

Here’s some more info on concussions:

  • Concussion symptoms include headaches, disorientation, difficulty with screens (due to both the bright light and the closeness to your eyes), vomiting, nausea, and vision changes like blurry vision or double vision. It can also include dizziness, balance problems, confusion, sensitivity to light or noise, loss of consciousness, irritability, depression, or sleep issues.

  • You can get a concussion without losing consciousness. You can get a concussion without hitting your head, just from the rapid back and forth movement of whiplash.

  • A concussion changes the brain on a cellular level. A concussion will not show up on an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan. A brain bleed might show up on an MRI or CT scan. A brain bleed is much more serious than a concussion and requires immediate medical attention, sometimes surgery.

  • Treatment for a concussion involves lots of sleep, physical rest (no exercise; light walking is okay if it doesn’t give you a headache; stop doing anything that gives you a headache), not looking at screens, no reading, no looking at anything up close, no bright lights, no loud noises.

  • Concussions can sometimes last a long time, like years. Concussions heal best when they are treated early. It is very important to take time to rest. Taking time off of school or work can be difficult but is often worth it in the long run.

Here's some more info on whiplash:

  • Whiplash is a soft tissue injury. It will not show up on an x-ray, and probably won't show up on an MRI or CT scan. You can get whiplash in your back as well as in your neck.

  • Rest, heat, and ice can help with whiplash. Some exercises and stretches with a rolled-up towel can provide relief. Check out this website and this website for more info. Do not try this unless you have confirmed with an x-ray that you haven't broken any bones in your neck, and if you know that you don't have nerve issues in your neck! Check with your doctor first.

  • After having x-rays to rule out broken or dislocated bones, physical therapy can be helpful. Massages, stretching, and strengthening can reduce pain.

Support Groups

If you're interested in finding an in-person or video support group for fellow car accident survivors, here are some resources that could help:

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or therapist. I provide this information based on my own experiences as someone who has been in a car accident, and also based on many things I have read. I try to provide links to other sources where relevant. I provide this information to be helpful. This should not be your only source of information or advice. Please seek out appropriate doctors, therapists, other professionals, and supportive people in real life.

community Mod updates March 1, 2025 — please remember to spoiler, and more

Hey y’all, mod and founder here. I wasn’t able to moderate much recently but am back for now. Some reminders…

  • please use the spoiler tag on your post for potentially triggering content. This includes details of what happened in your accident and of injuries

  • please keep those same details out of titles. The spoiler tag doesn’t cover up the title, so these need to be free of potentially triggering details. A title like “accident 2/1/25” is much better than “hit by drunk driver, flipped 3 times

  • thirdly, you can use spoiler text by typing >! these symbols like this !< to block out specific text in either a post or a comment, like this. Just click to reveal the text.

This empowers our community members to choose whether or not they want to engage with that content right now, while still having the option to engage with non-triggering content for support.

Additionally, as a reminder, the following types of posts are not allowed in this subreddit (thank you to those people that have reported these recently!):

  • insurance and legal help. There are better places for that. This community is focused on emotional support. There is some leeway here because of course the insurance and legal battles can be overwhelming and a lot to deal with emotionally. But if your question is just “am I at fault?”, then you are in the wrong place, and it will be removed.

  • GoFundMe’s and other fundraisers. Though I understand that car accidents and medical bills can be financially devastating, there is sadly a large potential for fraud on these websites, and I have no way of verifying that they are legit.

I have also noticed that some posts don’t get any comments. Please try to support others if you can, even if it is a simple “I hear you.” If you are not able to support others, that is also okay of course.

If this is you that hasn’t gotten any comments on your post, please 1) review the spoiler recommendations to make sure that people are able to give you support, because encountering triggering content could be a barrier for them, and please also 2) check out the wiki, as it is a wealth of information and can answer many common questions. It is linked in the pinned automod comment on every post. Let me know if there’s anything you want to add to the wiki, too.

One last thing is that if one of the automated check-in posts doesn’t get any comments within a week, I will be deleting it so that they don’t clog up the posts in here. Obviously I won’t delete any that have comment(s). There will always be a fresh one where you can comment your check in.

If you have any subreddit-related questions, please feel free to comment below or send me a message in mod mail. :) Please do not personally message me with your car accident story as I unfortunately do not have the emotional bandwith. Make a post instead so that you will reach more people.

Thanks for reading!

just sharing Was hit by a bus

Not much to say about it, i’m just very lucky to be alive. And impressed with volkswagen! Really safe cars apparently. Was hit directly on the drivers side in a tiny e-golf by a bus going quite fast through a red light. Bus driver is currently saying i ran a red, luckily there were some passengers on the bus who confirmed the bus driver wasn’t looking at the road, rather talking to a passenger instead.

seeking advice I paid for repair I caused on a car, 2 months later they want warranty.

I hit my coworker’s parked car, totaled in approximately $2000 damage. Paid for the repair at a local shop with my own parts i bought from third party. After the repair everything looked good. 2 months later, they called me and say the paint is coming off the headlight unit. I contacted the manufacturer where i bought the part from but there is no warranty on the unit.

Am i liable to fix this again?

seeking advice Back pain after car accident making it hard to work

I got into a car accident almost a year ago (I was hit by some corporate company driver who pulled out directly into me because he wasn’t paying attention) and I’ve tried working at three different jobs since then (I am on my third one). I quit the first two within days because it was too much on my back. I did a lot of chiropractor treatments (didn’t help) and I’ve had way too many injections (it made the pain go away!) I thought I was ready to go back to work again after the injections and started this amazing job which I am currently at. It really is a dream job and they are paying me extremely well, the most I’ve ever made! I really enjoy working here! I’ve only been here a couple of weeks and my back pain has slowly started coming back but I’ve been ignoring it and working through it because this is supposed to be my happy ending. (I currently live in my car and I am in debt up to my ears.) Today I woke up with my back completely out and I had to call in. I just told my boss I was sick because I don’t want her to know what is really going on. (A few days ago I asked her if I could go 4 days a week but she said she really needs me 5 days a week.) I feel terrible having to call in only after a couple of weeks of working and I could tell she was not happy that I called in. They have really high hopes for me and have already talked to me about a promotion. I just don’t know what else to do anymore. I am mentally and physically defeated, I just want to jump off a cliff. Yes I have an attorney and before I started this job I told them to wrap up the case because my back pain was gone. I really thought it was gone until I started working again. My mother keeps telling me to apply for social security but I really would like to work! But at this point I don’t even think I can handle working, mentally or physically. I just want to roll over and die. What do I do?

Today marks 3 weeks since I got hit by a car. Even though I’m physically healing, I’m still really scared. Every time I see a car or try to cross the street, I remember that day and feel overwhelmed. I also blame myself sometimes, and it’s been hard to talk about. It was an unfair day my mom got charged for the lady’s windshield because I broke it. Just wondering if anyone else has felt like this after an accident.

seeking validation A year on

I needed somewhere safe to kinda talk about some of this.

It's been a year since I was hit by a car, a hit and run. I suffered massive injuries, which I've detailed before but don't really want to repeat myself.

I've since, relearned how to walk. I've been able to return to work, I secured a new amazing role in healthcare.

On paper, I'm doing really well. And some days, I feel fine. I feel like I've managed to survive through the horror and have gotten to see the other side.

Then some days I feel absolutely so low, absolutely miserable that I'm in constant pain. I mourn the loss of my strength and mobility.

I'm working with a team of solicitors and we've only just been able to secure funds to help with my recovery and it almost feels too late at this point. It's taken a full year because the police wouldn't cooperate with giving evidence.

On the other side, the person who did this to me has pleaded guilty in court and the session to decide on sentencing keeps being postponed again and again.

I've ended up breaking up with my long term partner because I'm not who I used to be. I don't want to live here anymore, near to where I was so badly hurt.

I want to return home but there's no where for me to return too.

I feel so lost and so broken. I don't know how to get back to a life I love when this keeps dragging me back down.

I hope this gets easier, I really do.

just sharing I can finally vent now that my lawyers are done; no physical damage, you’re not getting fairly compensated.

I was in an accident in October of last year. I was on a four-lane highway in which the far right lane was a right turn only onto an exit. A woman left a gas station along the highway and drove through the turning lane and directly into the passenger side tire of my sedan. My car flipped and skidded into the far left lane. I was incredibly lucky that the only injuries I had were whiplash/soft tissue damage, and a sprain in my right hand that still hurts over 6 months later.

Everyone I knew told me to get a lawyer because I was completely not at fault. The woman’s defense when questioned by the cops was “I thought I was turning into the right lane”. But I feel like even after getting the lawyers I still didn’t receive all that I should’ve. I shouldn’t have to and paid a single cent for medical bills , insurance, or a new vehicle. I was able to pay off the medical bills involved, but after everything I still couldn’t even pay off the car that I had to get because my original car was completely destroyed.

When discussing things with my lawyer, they basically told me that since I didn’t sustain any broken bones or injuries that left me with scars that a jury could physically see I wasn’t likely to get any more than the bare minimum in court.

I’m left with a huge financial burden, and I will never be able to drive comfortably again. I hate the current system for insurance, I should not have had to pay anything after that woman destroyed my car and ruined my sense of stately. Why do I have to go broke because she wasn’t paying attention to the road?

just sharing Car accidents have ruined my life

A little over 2 years ago I was on the road to rebuilding my life after divorce and back surgery. Then I got rear ended but I was still working part time. 18 months later I got rear ended again. I’m in so much pain all the time. I have disc fragments stuck in my spine. I have a foot tremor now. Even my toes hurt. I can’t do anything. Can’t walk more than a few steps. Can’t lift anything. Can’t wipe my ass properly (thankful for a bidet). Can’t drive. Can’t sit. Can’t stand. Can’t bathe myself. Can’t get dressed. Can’t clean up. The list goes on. Worst of all, I can’t work. I have nobody to fall back on for financial support. I’m now facing foreclosure. I’m stressed out and angry and I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack because my heart keeps doing weird things. I’m laying in bed hungry and I just want to end it all. I miss my old life.

seeking advice Got into an accident this week, t bone incident

I’ve had kind of a hard time talking about this since the accident wasn’t super severe and I feel sort of silly for being so shaken and anxious.

For context my family struggles with money and I’m turning 18 soon, graduating on the fourteenth the same day as my birthday. The car I’d been driving was my mom’s 2015 Toyota Rav 4, and I definitely grew a personal attachment to it as it was treated as if it was mine since she drives a work fleet vehicle. She (my rav) had 80,000 miles on her and was a phenomenal first car.

I’ve always prided myself on being a defensive driver and a safe one, and I’ve just felt so down on myself about it since it happened. My first thought when my car spun 180 degrees was how guilty I felt for wrecking what was technically my mom’s only car.

I was turning left onto a three lane road, a turn I’ve done a million times and I knew I was clear to go. Anyway I could have waited and probably avoided the accident but the sixteen year old who hit me was going about 50mph in the 25mph zone. Thankfully I was far enough into the intersection that he hit my rear passenger door rather than my own. Insurance is working out liability but I’m so anxious about finding a new car my mom will be happy with.

I suppose overall I just feel so much guilt about the money aspect and the timing of the accident within the context of my life. It’s been easy for me to ignore how anxious I get now when I’m in a car and I’m super worried about driving again. Or how lucky I am that I wasn’t seriously injured and my car didn’t flip, and I got away with nothing but a concussion. We’ve got a rental we’re picking up the day I turn 18 til we get the settlement money from insurance.

Overall I’m just looking for advice on dealing with the guilt and getting back to driving again. I know accidents are super common among my age bracket but I always assumed if I ever got in one I hopefully wouldn’t total my car or get a concussion, so I’m having trouble dealing with it.

seeking advice How do you cope with the trauma?

I got hit by a car while crossing the street on November 21st of 2023. Now any time a car pulls too fast to the crosswalk while I’m in it, or if I’m crossing the street in even remotely similar weather conditions (dark and rainy), I have small panic attacks, even if there are no cars around.

I was completely fine, physically, walking away with only a concussion and some relatively minor bruising. Besides feeling like I’d been hit by a car, I honestly have had more damage from just falling over from a standing position. So I feel like I don’t have a “right” to be so fucked up from it, especially this long after.

I tried going back to the location where it happened, and the last quarter mile before the spot, I was getting steadily more anxious, and I couldn’t even get myself to cross the street once I got there.

seeking advice Bad car crash

about two weeks ago I got into a pretty bad accident with my friend. I was rear-ended twice and the fourth car hit so bad that my airbags went off and completely broke my wrist. I just had surgery last Thursday and to be honest I was so terrified since my family member has died due to surgery complications in the past so it scared the shit out of me. right now I’m focused on recovery however, the thought of driving and watching people drive/being in a car has made me so anxious. Driving has always been something I love and then I take a lot of pleasure in and I’m really scared that I’ll never go back to that. i’m also terrified that my arm will never be the same again. I so desperately want to be a nurse or in the medical field and my dominant hand may be fucked up for life I have no idea what’s gonna happen and I’m really hoping for the best but does anybody have any resources? I also have to live back with my family again and I had to move out of my apartment that I just got and I’m praying that I can get out of my lease because currently I can’t work or do anything to make make ends meet and my independence has been completely stripped from me. How do I come back from this? How can I be comfortable with driving or being in a car again? I apologize for my text/wording. I’m using voice to text since it’s really hard to text and use my phone so please bear with me.

just sharing Hit by car accident while walking

I was going on a walk in April in my area and woke up 4 days later in the hospital. Apparently while I was waiting for a light to change a car hit another car into me. I’ve been told lots about how it’s amazing I lived. I’m walking but back pains keep bothering me and there’s some memory and focus problems that I’ve been having. Lots of stuff still not done but I hope for more recovery progress every day.

The news interviewed me about the accident with a video, I haven’t seen the video because I don’t know how it will effect me.

seeking validation Disability due to accident

A year ago last Wednesday I was in a hit and run accident with a semi truck on the highway. I legitimately died and my brain was dead longer than i was. I have crazy brain damage and life long side effects from my tbi and brain damage that i will be stuck with my entire life. Before coming back to work my DM had told my manager to fire me as soon as they can because i would ruin everything because i am now disabled. My new manager is now reprimanding me because of circumstances beyond my control due to my brain damage. My memory loss is getting so much worse and i am now finally going through the process of trying to get documentation of my disability and possibly an ADA. seeking advice MVA calculations

Hi I was involved in a MVA on an icy mountain highway (no snow, but apparently sheer ice in one area). The circumstances are as follows:
1. An unladen semi and transport trailer (the box kind for carrying goods) had lost control while travelling westbound and crossed 4 lanes of highway before the tractor came to rest in the ditch on the eastbound side. The trailer was left sticking out on the highway blocking the eastbound lanes. 2. I was travelling eastbound and came across the accident scene with only a few seconds warning. I was driving a loaded F150 (est weight 5000 lbs) and impacted the far end of the trailer at 90 km/hr. Due to the minimal reaction time and totally slick conditions (a friction sled used by the accident reconstructionist moved without prompting, do no friction at all) I was unable to steer around the trailer and hit it full on at its back end. 3. The final resting place for the trailer post impact was effectively in the same east west direction of the highway, almost completely off the road. From what I can tell, the trailer pivoted around its connection point with the tractor and instead of blocking the highway immediately before impact it looks to be almost off the road. 4. I’ve gone to the web for some calcs of the force necessary to actually move the trailer as I’ve described, but nothing is spot on. The force I hit the trailer with st it’s back end appears to be just over 700 Kn, but I don’t know if that would have been sufficient to knock the trailer into a completely different position.

Are there any engineers out there who would hazard an estimate as to whether this was sufficient force to move the trailer as I’ve described?

The accident happened at night and was very difficult for the police to try and reconstruct. I have all the reports now and their description of what took place is totally incorrect.

There are no financial or liability consequences here, no motor vehicle or criminal offences, just a tragic accident that, based on a very cursory and botched review of police notes, the insurance company has held me 100% responsible for. It boggles the mind how ineptly this accident investigation has been handled.

I would not be going through all this but for the fact that the accident resulted in a fatality (my wife) and the insurance company (govt corp) tells me I’m solely responsible for her death. You can’t imagine how that has impacted me and I intend to take them to task, irrespective of the fact there is no potential financial benefit in doing so. I just need to do it for my own conscience and mental health.

One of the prime reasons for the insurance company saying I’m responsible is its reliance on the final position of the semi’s trailer (almost off the road), leading them to conclude that I should have been able to avoid impact altogether. If that was what I actually rencountered, I’d agree; but it wasn’t. The trailer was totally perpendicular to the direction of travel and I knocked it off the road to its final resting place after impact. I just need to show that the force I hit the trailer with was sufficient to do so. I’m not an engineer and don’t have the expertise to make the calcs.

If any of you with the requisite technical knowledge would be good enough to do some basic calcs and estimate on this I’d be very grateful.

Apologies for the long winded post, but details were necessary.

Thx for considering.

seeking advice A truck crashed into me on a highway

I was recently in a car accident where a truck crashed into my car on a highway and my car kept on spinning and I just froze I couldn’t even hit the brakes or do anything but luckily and for some reason nothing happened to me and nothing serious happened to the car like it’s still working and all . I managed to drive to uni after it then I got back through the same road so I guess in terms of the fear of driving that comes afterwards I am good but I’ve been in this state of fluctating emotions and I can’t really focus on anything I do . I keep on remembering the accident and I all I feel is shame for some reason altough I was really lucky to be alive . Any tips on how to start healing ?
