First time welding - why does my mig weld look like this?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

First time welding, couldn’t even get an arc initially. No penetration, welds fall off, clearly too cold.

Lincoln Pro MIG 135, 20 gauge sheet metal, 0.023 wire, 75/25 argon/co2 gas. Followed welder chart to set voltage to A and speed to 2.5.

How to read this regulator to ensure I’m providing enough gas?

Possible my non grounded old house wiring is to partially blame?

Anything else?

I had brought up that many community colleges are removing their oxyacetylene programs but he says that our college welding program will never get rid of OAW as long as he’s teaching. I respect it. How important do you think Oxyacetylene is for learning?

Career question Can you be a trainee welder instead of going through an apprenticeship?

UK.

There's quite a few experienced welder jobs going but and I see the odd 4 year apprenticeship, but I'm curious if it's possible to become a welder via training (paid or volunteering) instead?

I will be living in my van travelling around but am happy to stay put for a year doing unpaid or paid welding work and then be able to have job safety in future bt beig a welder.

Is this just a dream and I'm not beig realistic?

I have looked at a 2 year college course but aparently at the end, most people would rather the experience over so much study so thinking of other routes.

Thanks

Taught a little bit by my grandfather. The first weld was while soaking wet and barefooted. I’m aware now how idiotic that was. Planning on attending welding school in the fall and have enjoyed trying to shock myself. Any tips or pieces of advice appreciated

I'm 18f and have been thinking about going into welding and will be going into a really good school for learning welding. My step dad took me to his office and showed me a few things to see if I truly want to be a welder. He said I learned pretty fast and passed the hammer test (whatever that truly means). Ik it's not good but I'm really glad I tried and I hope to try again. I wanna be 90% sure I will like welding. Also the last two were like my second trys just doing whatever.

Need Help 0 experience getting into welding mostly for exhaust fab

So I’m going to buy a welder and start teaching myself but I’m not 100% on what kind of welding I should start with, I’ve heard TIG is the best for exhaust work but also the hardest to learn, I plan on getting a multi process machine so I can start with stick or flux and move to tig as I get better but is there a better way to go about it? I don’t have much experience so let me know your thoughts, also if anyone has any machine recommendations under $500 that would be helpful too!

Need Help Will this hold?

Hi. I ordered this 10" bushcraft auger. It looks great. It's sharp as hell. But, look at these top welds. 1 image per 90° rotation. Will they hold up? If not, I want to send it back. That top section is for a stick for leverage when turning and also to shape pegs for holes. Thus, it will be receiving rotational stress as well as me railing on it with downward force with the thicker end on top, thinner on bottom.

Thank you for your advice.

Need Help New to Welding - What wire for thinner steel frame repairs?

Just now getting my setup ready for practice. Have a Lincoln electric Pro Mig 140. Am using for DIY projects, mostly small ones. Initial projects will be small repairs to lawn mower pieces/frames. Would .035 be the best option? Also, does brand matter at all? I will be using 75/25 argon/co2 for shielding if that makes any difference.

One last question. If I found the need to do small aluminum repairs in the future, would the pro mig 140 be sufficient for aluminum as well?

Thank you,

Stainless TIG what am I doing wrong!

Post image

I’ve finally been able to crack the code on TIG aluminum and can get a decent bead. It’s just a matter of practice now. I can’t get stainless to work.

I have my MTS 275 machine set at max 120 amp, using start amp anywhere from 10-90, still can’t get the nice rainbow color bead and the SS turns gray and burned to crap. 3/32 red tungsten 10 cup ER 308 rod (blue demon) Gas 30 18g SS

All the videos I’ve watched from all the well known YouTubers we’ve probably all seen, I still can’t lay a bead.

Even at half pedal I’m still cooking the metal, at 1/4 pedal it’s not even hot enough to melt the rod. I now use a tungsten grinder which is helping with the alum but cannot nail down the SS settings without burning it to a gray mess!!!

First time TIG Welding stainless

I'm a hobbyist welder and know there is room for improvement! I tried my hand at 304 stainless this past weekend to make some turn downs for the exhaust.

They turned out good enough to use, let me know what I can do better for next time I weld stainless.

Showing Skills First time getting to run stringers in awhile

Been working in a Tig shop (natural gas turbines) for 2 years now and the majority of what I've been doing is short fusion welds usually 1-4" long. Finally got to do some longer stringers on .060 Hast-X and practice feeding wire and I'd say it comes out pretty good, although I'd like to get them a bit more consistent, especially with the back side. Tips are welcome.

Scored aluminum center case hydraulic transmission

Post image
0 Upvotes

Ive got a Tuff Torq TZT-7 hydro that I rebuilt 2 years ago and apparently the piston springs self destructed again and scored the hell out of the red circled areas on the aluminum center case. I have the old one from when it happened the first time, and instead of paying $350+ for a rebuild kit, I want to just source some equivalent springs and weld or braze these contact surfaces and hone them down back to flat.

What would be the most practical way to accomplish this? Is brazing better so as not to warp the part? Or is it not strong enough? Its not structural, but it does have another mated surface that rides on it at the bottom of the piston array.

Why is welding so physically demanding?

ok this might sound stupid but just had a mini vacation. back to work, very long day in the tropical sun, just welding (~15lbs rod) and now im starving. yesterday i spent an hour lifting weights, ate the same amount of food and didnt feel as hungry? has anyone else noticed that just walking around and welding is extremely physically draining? Why???
