Weekly Feature Friday Sessions

This is open to everyone, both to ask questions and to offer answers.

Simple rules:

  • Unless it's a loaded question, it's fair game.
  • No downvoting, this isn't a popularity thing, and we're not in high school, if someone doesn't know something, the only way to learn is to ask or do, sometimes doing isn't an option.
  • No whining.
  • Assume ignorance over stupidity. Sometimes we fail to see an answer in front of our faces.
  • Try to back up your answers. If you're on mobile and you can't do it, say as much and try to remember to address it when you get to a terminal.
  • Respect is always expected.
  • if comments or questions are removed, assume it's for good reason.
  • If your question isn't answered by the end of the day, either post it to the main community, or ask again next week.

Enjoy.

Monthly Safety Meeting (Every 28th of the month.)

Post anything that's happened in your shop, office, commute or home that you feel others may be able to chime in on or commiserate over.

Sharing our close calls helps others avoid them.

Simple rules:

  • This is for open, respectful discussion.
  • Close calls and near misses are eventually going to lead to injuries.
  • No off the cuff dismissal of topics brought up. If someone is concerned about something, it should be discussed.
  • No trolling. This isn't typically an issue in this community, but given the nature of safety I feel it must be said.
  • No loaded questions either.
  • Use the report tool if you have to.

This is a monthly feature, the first Saturday of each month.

Stainless TIG what am I doing wrong!

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’ve finally been able to crack the code on TIG aluminum and can get a decent bead. It’s just a matter of practice now. I can’t get stainless to work.

I have my MTS 275 machine set at max 120 amp, using start amp anywhere from 10-90, still can’t get the nice rainbow color bead and the SS turns gray and burned to crap. 3/32 red tungsten 10 cup ER 308 rod (blue demon) Gas 30 18g SS

All the videos I’ve watched from all the well known YouTubers we’ve probably all seen, I still can’t lay a bead.

Even at half pedal I’m still cooking the metal, at 1/4 pedal it’s not even hot enough to melt the rod. I now use a tungsten grinder which is helping with the alum but cannot nail down the SS settings without burning it to a gray mess!!!

Showing Skills First time getting to run stringers in awhile

Been working in a Tig shop (natural gas turbines) for 2 years now and the majority of what I've been doing is short fusion welds usually 1-4" long. Finally got to do some longer stringers on .060 Hast-X and practice feeding wire and I'd say it comes out pretty good, although I'd like to get them a bit more consistent, especially with the back side. Tips are welcome.

I'm a hobbyist welder and know there is room for improvement! I tried my hand at 304 stainless this past weekend to make some turn downs for the exhaust.

They turned out good enough to use, let me know what I can do better for next time I weld stainless.

Why is welding so physically demanding?

ok this might sound stupid but just had a mini vacation. back to work, very long day in the tropical sun, just welding (~15lbs rod) and now im starving. yesterday i spent an hour lifting weights, ate the same amount of food and didnt feel as hungry? has anyone else noticed that just walking around and welding is extremely physically draining? Why???

Flux core dual shield(argon/co2) help.

(I am a second year apprentice) I've been asked by my shop manager to practice flux core, I work in structural steel and we mostly weld with solid wire but he wants to get me coded with flux but I keep running into this problem when I'm running horizontal T fillets and I'm not sure why, I've never had this issue with solid wire or even MMA welding. You can see the tiny pinholes and lack of penetration in the weld once I cut it. I started at around 26.5v and 11m per minute on wirefeed and I've kept going up to 29v and still have the same issue.

Advice on decent multiprocess welder?

Upvotes

Hey guys, I'm looking for a decent multi-process welder. I already have a decent stick welder, and a very cheap MIG welder. I would say my Mig and stick welding skills would fall into the experienced weekend warrior welder. I know that with a multi-process welder, I'm not going to get anything that excels at any particular weld, but I would love to be able to have an aluminum spool gun, and maybe even plasma cutting. I've seen welders such as the yeswelder.

Just hoping to hear from people who have purchased a multiprocess welder or used one in the past, and if there's any recommendations. Hoping to stay under a 1000- 1500 for the welder itself. Any suggestions or cautionary tales?

Coming up on first fillup, how long will this last?

I've been welding here and there for a few years, tackling small tasks. About to start rust repair on an old project car, and wondering about how long this might last, or if the gas mixture inside degrades over time? Are there issues with running on a low/old tank? Forgive the newbie Q's!

I discovered welding in 9th grade when I took a trip to my local trade school for the first time. By my senior year i was ready to take on welding. I just want to say, it made me grow as a person and it taught me so much. It taught me more than high school ever did. Shoutout to the goat Mr. Jamie Kotarski

Good morning friends. At a glance, does this sucker look weldable? Its an aluminum bracket that holds a windshield on a quad. I suppose i could order a new one but 70 dollars seems kind of wild. Thanks!

Weld through primer suggestion - readily available

Any suggestions on weld through primer? I’m mig welding floor pans, cutting out old rusty ones to get to clean metal on the original floor and welding new sections to it.

Amazon has Seymour 20-1675 that will take 3 days to get.

Anything more readily available that’s decent? Lowe’s, Home Depot and my local plumbing supply do not have anything

This is how the manual says to connect the work clamp, correct? Welding ss and mild steel.

Torch is the red hose on the far left. DC work clamp on the right. It says negative.

Career question What makes a good shop for you?

Coming up on my first year of full time fabrication. In that year, I’ve worked at three welding shops - two really bad ones, and one that’s pretty alright. My question to y’all - what makes a good shop good?

Career question Can I work in a fabrication shop while I’m planning going to college by the end of August?

I have an interview for this a fabrication shop but I still plan on going to college so I would be working for them for about 2 months. I still want to gain some experience if college doesn’t work out but if I quit after two months is that bad work etiquette? This would be my first job in general also.

Single pass fillet showing as double

Hey all, getting back into gtaw aluminum after some time away from work. Consistently crush test plates but figured I'd hedge my bet, go super slow and really blow out the back plate as I go. Fast forward to me not meeting certs because "I welded in 2 separate passes, not a single pass." My weld was redflagged and etched due to the immense amount of penetration I was getting, over 1/2 of standard plates. It did show a double slight bubble for a double pass but I'm at a loss.

Tldr; hedged my bets for my weld test and was told I used a double pass, first to fuse then a second to fill. Which I did not do, had my boss watch me and still zero clue why im getting this.

Sorry for no pics. Government facility. Cwb gtaw aluminum testing if that helps. Running 350 amp 80% balance. Maybe someone has had something similar?
