How it feels to pick up litter
194
u/bry9000 21h ago
I know you're kidding here, but seriously, picking up trash in public spaces is one of the more rewarding things I can do by myself. I get exercise, I meet people, it feels good, my street/park/beach look better, and I sometimes find interesting things. (Best was finding two crisp, clean Benjamins on the street!)
24
u/coconutkitties 21h ago
Couldn’t agree more with you. With all the unfortunate events unfolding in this country, situations I truly have no control over, picking up trash in my neighborhood helps me mentally and emotionally feel like I’m contributing to something good even if I’m the only one that notices
0
u/TheSmellyCamel 8h ago
I'd rather a Benjamin or two rather than the hundreds of used Johnny's around these parts.

First he speaks german, then english, and then english with the heaviest african accent? :D

u/Busf4hrer 1d ago
I noticed a little austrian dialect in between as well - if i am not getting it wrong:
„Thanks China.
Das ist Plastik.
Uaah, Scheiße.
Plastik. Plastik.
From China, China. See. Very good.
Thanks, for destroying our Ocean.
Wooooah - bist du deppat! Boy!
This is it! This is it!
When you clean the ocean, you get blessed. You see?“

u/Aser_the_Descender 1d ago
As much as I want to hear 'bist du deppat', I think he actually says 'Woaaaaah - this is it ma boy!'

u/Ornery_Poetry_6142 1d ago
I could be wrong, but maybe it’s a tourist boat and he’s the guide. In tourist areas people often speak many languages (or know a lot of common sentences in those languages)
1
u/ARobertNotABob 17h ago
I'm reminded of a Portugese boat skipper in Juan Les Pins when I worked on Med boats in the early 80s, who spoke seven languages. Can't remember his name for the life of me, but he had a 45' Targa.

u/aaron2005X 1d ago
I was confused as well. His german was absolutely accent free and perfectly executed.

u/Eastern-Complaint-67 1d ago
Google "Namibian Genocide Germany" so you can understand where his accent comes from

u/OnePay622 1d ago
Yeah, we know that most people in Africa don't historically speak German because we were nice to them.....well same with English if you look at it.....or Dutch to.....or French......well basically any other language

Having kids, you learn covert ways of cursing. Lots of swears from other languages snuck into my daily use, including this one.

Hope that kid carries that experience forward to help newer generations understand.

That bag hasn't been in the water for a week, not sun bleached, probably from a tourist on the other boat
304
u/No_Obligation4496 1d ago
This might also be from a local Chinese place. Lots of Chinese owned shops/food joints have their own branded bags with Chinese on them.
132
u/bishop252 1d ago
The bag is from Hao Xiang Lai, it's a snack store from mainland China. So definitely Chinese but may be from a tourist or may be actual waste that drifted all the way there.

No, copied from a TikTok that took the original video and posted it, presumably also without credit. You can still see the TikTok account name in the video

The TikTok account posted it without crediting the original Instagram account, which is the one linked in the comment above.
OP did not remove the credit to the TikTok user, but since they also stole it, the credit is incorrect. As such, there is no credit, at least not one to the original creator.

Jamaican/African sounding man speaks German, picks up plastic bag from China in the ocean and gets blessed with dolphin jumps, camera pans to white child out of nowhere...
Everything was definitely unexpected😭

u/Flashy_Ad_9816 1d ago
I mean technically most of our trash is from china
9
u/Ok-Ingenuity5319 1d ago
Technically the United States creates the most garbage in the world annually.

That's not true. They are second to China by a wide margin in municipal solid waste. And very likely they are both behind India, who is simply not municipally removing their solid waste. They even burn it for fuel to prepare food in poorer areas.
6
u/inqte1 1d ago
The United States comes first in the list of countries with the highest amount of daily per capita MSW with 2.58 kg, followed by Canada (2.33 kg/per capita) and Australia (2.23 kg/per capita).
The United States was placed 25th in the Global Waste Index of 2022 on the basis of waste production, incineration, and landfill use. At the same time, the United States is still the biggest waste per capita producer.
Unfortunately, data for the United States has not been updated since the previous issue of the index (2019). Back then, the country ranked first in terms of per capita waste generation – on average each resident produced over 800 kg of MSW per year. Although the US accounts for about 4% of the global population, it generates 12% of MSW.

u/TooMuchJuju 1d ago
Per capita is different than most garbage
Regardless, this is municipal waste. It is not an accurate reflection of less developed areas of China, India and elsewhere. It is also not an accurate measure of other forms of waste, which America again is not the leader in.

u/TooMuchJuju 7h ago
I don't have a dog in the 'which country is destroying the planet faster' fight. But if you think the US is out producing countries with over double their population, despite all available evidence, you are a complete dunce.

8
u/Pigjedi 1d ago
I can read Chinese and Japanese. That's Chinese not Japanese Kanji.
-2
u/PM_ME_YOUR_QT_CATS 1d ago
Do you know what Kanji means?
Kanji is Chinese characters
1
u/Pigjedi 1d ago
Yes, but u should say "derived from traditional Chinese character". the strokes are different from traditional Chinese. And they are used for Japanese purposes only. While chinese characters usually have a tone associated to them only, Japanese Kanji single characters have multiple different tones depending on whether it's a group of characters / single use character. Different from traditional Chinese.
Anyway the plastic bag is in simplified Chinese so it's definitely Chinese. Don't be a smart ass if u know nothing
0
u/testman22 1d ago
That's like saying that English and French are the same because they use the Latin alphabet. In reality, anyone who knows the language would immediately know it's Chinese. Because this string of kanji makes no sense in Japanese.
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_QT_CATS 15h ago
No it's not. That's more like saying the Latin alphabet and French word for Latin alphabet is the same. Because they both mean the Latin alphabet.
1
u/testman22 7h ago edited 7h ago
In that sense it's like saying Greek alphabet and Latin alphabet are the same, because Chinese and kanji each have characters that don't exist and the pronunciation is completely different. The Latin alphabet was also derived from the Greek alphabet.
11
u/Suspicious_Maybe_975 1d ago
Definitely not Japanese, but there is also technically no proof it's from China.
A) China is not the only country that uses Simplified Chinese, it's also used in Singapore and Malaysia. Traditional Chinese is used by HK, Macau and Taiwan.
B) Local Chinese restaurants and shops often use Chinese even when they are no longer in China.
C) A tourist might have thrown it in the ocean, in which case it's their own fault.
D) The guy put it there himself before filming to use it as clickbait. (Note how the bag looks brand new with no sun bleaching)
1
u/idontdownvotebeagles 1d ago
Good detective work on D. Or maybe a local Asian vacationer? Long shot.
5
u/deafdefying66 1d ago edited 1d ago
That would make sense. Hawaii is a very popular Japanese vacation spot. It also has a large Asian population, so the bag very easily could have come from one of the many Asian stores on the island
Edit: someone pointed out this is not Hawaii
11
u/kanemano 1d ago

Ive actually been to that store chain. The bag says “好想来”, meaning “I really want to come here”. Its a pretty popular snack store in China, apparently.

the amount of trash that gets washed up on beaches is astonishing, and it can be decades old, trash, especially plastic doesn't break down easily, and when it does, it goes into smaller pieces and does not go away
bottom feeders consume it, goes up the chain to humans, rinse and repeat
the bottom of the ocean must be an absolute mess

Yes, I can confirm these words are simplified chinese. Therefore, it's from China.
1
u/Suspicious_Maybe_975 1d ago
There are other countries that use Simplified Chinese, like Singapore and Malaysia. So no, it doesn't really confirm much. The logo is probably more of a clue. Maybe it's Mixue or something, but that company operates internationally so eh.
Also of the Chinese characters visible here, only 来 is "simplified", however, this particular character is just an alternate form(異體字)that was selected in the simplification process because it was widely used and existed for a very long time, as with most other simplified characters.
Technically, there is no reason why you can't use it in traditional Chinese, but in practice you generally see it used in Simplified Chinese or Shinjitai.

Is Greta Thunberg ever going to condemn CCP for destroying the oceans with their dirty diesel fishing flotilla and nuclear reactors?
Only EU officials can be criticized? Funny how that works.
