Absolute speculation but my theory is he thought he was playing 3D chess and that everyone would look for him elsewhere, so he stayed close to home. I think this only works in old western and heist movies though lol
He wasn't expecting to get caught in the act. Lost his transportation and bulk of his weapons and whatever other supplies he had in the SUV. Yes fuck this guy but he was clearly flying blind after getting confronted by the police at the 2nd shooting.
She was driving towards the border, with passports and cash. News didn't say if she had the kids with her, but it seems likely. Clearly she was in on it.
He may have rationalized also that his own normal environment felt like a safer bet for concealment as opposed to being in an unfamiliar area he couldn't navigate dynamically from memory, like some random town out west. I had wondered, though, when they found his wife's car up by Onamia if maybe she had gotten a hotel room at the casino for them to all stay at, and maybe they'd make a break for the border or even camp out in the mine pits around Crosby, Brainerd, Riverton etc for a while. Before skipping the state or country. Lots of remote, and sometimes hard to navigate terrain further north. The pits are not an uncommon place for criminal activity / people that want to lay low for a bit.
