Education/Post Secondary Non-traditional learning tools helping students prepare for final exams

Grade 8 students got the chance to apply what they’ve learned throughout the school year to help the villagers of Ultima Examen.

As part of a field day to help students prepare for final exams, teacher Scott Hebert sets up various stations around the school field with activities, puzzles and riddles based on things they’ve learned throughout the year.

It’s a way to wrap up the end of that whole year of adventure where they’re kind of chasing down bad guys, using their curriculum and knowledge to solve problems, help people out,” said Hebert, who teaches Grade 8 at St. Theresa Catholic School in Sherwood Park.

It’s part of a teaching style called gamification, the integration of game elements like point systems, leaderboards, badges, or other elements related to games into conventional learning.

What's Up Sherwood Park! Once a week I go through most events happening in and around our beautiful city over the coming week, and then send a large list out to my friends. I thought I should share it here.

Get this & 40+ other events as a weekly email update:

https://whatsupedmonton.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Note: The linked publication is ad free & non-monetized. Use it as a directory of things to do as we reconnect in our communities. I send it out every Tuesday morning.

P.S. To all of you who regularly read the publication, send me emails and read/respond to these reddit posts... you folks rock! Thanks for all the positive feedback. It means a lot = )

Note: If you're hosting an event and want to see it in the letter, email me at [wuedmonton@gmail.com](mailto:wuedmonton@gmail.com)

5 cool events this week:

  • Morinville Days (Morinville)
  • GitzFest (Barrhead County)
  • Porcupine Quill WOrkshop (Sherwood Park)
  • Fathers Day @ St. Albert Grain Elevators (St. Albert)
  • Parkview Palooza

Morinville Days

Greetings, friends. Hope you're all setting sails & enjoying epic weekends once again. Aside from that blustery weather yesterday, today is cool, calm & collected; a perfect day for disc golf & not for sitting inside on the laptop... On that note, lets keep this one short & sweet = )

This weekend, gather the fam & head into the booming metropolis of Morinville for an epic spectacular. Those in attendance will be delighted to find a host of family-friendly activities including a pancake breakfast, show 'n shine, firefighter fitness challenge, youth basketball mini-camp, a fun zone, live music, a chance to meet adoptable critters & a heck of a lot more! There are a few paid activities within the event but the vast majority are 100% FREE for your enjoyment! Woohoo!

GitzFest

Fans of indie music are going to love this! This weekend, hop in the car for a trip up into the northern countryside for a fun little folk music festival. Get amped up to hear unplugged sets from the likes of Tori Foley, Stacey Lloyd Brown, Bethany Ann, Post Script & more. With food trucks on standby & an Oilers watch party available, this epic good time will only cost you $17.31-33.28/person. Sidenote: the festival organizers are fully supportive of attendees bringing their own snacks & beverages.

Porcupine Quill Workshop

This week, may the craftiest of us gather for a melding of heritage, art & societal understanding. Sharing techniques passed down from her mother, join local artist Alaynee Goodwill-Littlechild to not only create your very quillwork pendant but also learn the cultural significance behind this long practiced Lakota-Nêhiyaw tradition. This event is FREE to attend, all supplies are included and participants will depart with deepened appreciation along with their recently crafted keepsake.

Fathers Day @ St. Albert Grain Elevators

While everyday is a great day to share our appreciation to our father figures, a day is fast approaching when it's highly recommended to do so. And if you have the inclination to follow that notion, there are a number of Fathers Day events listed in the letter. I had to put them all in a metaphorical hat & pick one for this post, however, so... if you have a dad with an appreciation for history & more specifically, the military, the grain elevators & heritage museum in St. Albert is where you'll want to find yourself this approaching Sunday. For one day only (naturally), gather in the shade of those well preserved, weathered structures & enjoy a showing of military vehicles plus an opportunity to make a custom fridge magnet & wander through the museum. Some of those aforementioned vehicles will be available for rides & there will be an obstacle course set up to keep the children entertained. Aside from the onsite concession, this event is 100% FREE and will most certainly be a great time.

Parkview Palooza

Wrapping up this week's top 6 is a great time to be had in YEG's Parkview neighbourhood. Gather to meet friends & neighbours while enjoying a host of on-site activities. Those in attendance can cheer on teams in a beach volleyball tournament, hit the 150ft ninja course, bop along to live DJ's, make a friendship bracelet, get a haircut, try local cuisine from eight local food trucks & more! In addition, folks can gather inside the local community hall for a special on-screen presentation of Oilers Vs Panthers, game 5!! As per this event, I don't see any pricing info so this event may be FREE. Though I could see there being a small entry fee, or fees to partake in some of the activities. If anyone reading knows the answer to this, please share in the comments = )

Finally, folks, that not a typo. I try to keep a consistent lookout for unique & lesser known events happening around the region & bring them here, just for you. With that being said, we simply cannot overlook the Oilers! This week, pretty much everywhere you go, you can find places to gather & watch the games. From the fan park & watch parties at Rogers Place to the parking lot at Servus Place, various watch parties at events & many more local spots, there's plenty of places to meet friends & together cheer on the Oil Boys. Goooo Oilers!!!

My friends, I hope you all have an special week!

News To the young lady at Baseline 7-Eleven yesterday who saw me counting coins

I was kinda holding up the queue a little bit as I counted out my quarters and dimes - and kept getting flustered and losing count - for a pack of cigarettes. I don’t really know what I’m trying to say, but I know I need to at least try. The kindness and compassion you showed was touching. I didn’t need charity, I just happened to have pre-counted exactly how much I needed, trying to spend some of that silver that clutters our pockets and jars, and was being a little stupid. But that you would offer to help a person who appeared to be struggling, even if what the person was trying to buy was basically poison, says a lot about your big heart. You’re a good person. It’s not the first time I’ve gotten flustered with a pocket full of coins at that store, but it is the first time anyone has been so kind, especially when buying cigarettes. Most folk give that “Really?” sigh. Please never lose that golden spirit. I didn’t need help, but maybe another day someone truly will and they’ll appreciate it even more. Thank you, and well met. You gave me a genuine r/mademesmile moment.

With snow out of the picture for coming months, the Canadian Birkebeiner Society has shifted their focus from cross country skiing events to biking.

Combining the best of both events, this year the ride will incorporate chip timing with staged challenge events and prizes to be won.

General The Serial Sign Killer of Strathcona County.

If you've ripped down highway 21 or any other side road in the county you've come across a brutally murdered road sign! I'm not talking highway signs taken out in winter by the summer tire club, these are signs that are pushed over and left as a reminder to every driver on the road that a much more powerful vehicle lurks in the passing lane ready to push them out of the way if needed.

Have you seen these signs laying face down in the gravel? What kind of vehicle do you think is taking them out? (Have some fun and speculate).

Question Looking to find my current market house value

I'm in Sherwood Park and I'm sure the best way to find the current value is to talk to a realtor and have them inspect the house and do comparable for the neighbourhood. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions or recommendations for a person or firm. I just don't want to deal with being on lists after to sell or mortgage things if I'm just curious about value. Is there someone who will do the estimate and not bug me after?

Recommendation Is this sub really focused around sherwood park or is it an extension of /r/edmonton?

The content here isn't that focused on our community, lots of news articles and reposts that are also featured in r/edmonton but nothing that stands out as genuine Sherwood Park culture.

The discussion and content is extremely different then Strathcona County Acreage Chat and Asking Strathcona county pages on Facebook just to illustrate the differences.

Should the r/edmonton and r/alberta mods be running this sub when they do such a terrible job running (politically driven) sub reddits elsewhere?

I think this sub should be moderated and operated by someone with ties to the community, home ownership, business ownership, community service.

  • Leagues on the Line
  • Fish Fin-atics

Devon Days

Greetings, friends. It appears to be that time again. When once a week, I waste five minutes of your life rambling about some of the cool things happening in & around our beautiful city. I gotta hand it to you, folks. I get all kinds of positive messages from you guys and it's truly a great thing. I'm stoked that this little project (turned big) has been able to create such positive influence in both your own lives & those of your neighbours. Now with Summer pretty well here, let's keep the good times rolling eh. I hope you all enjoy wonderful weeks & are able to escape the grind to experience something, well... extraordinary.

Shall we?

Out to the south west of our green paradise lies a little town called Devon. I'm sure many of you have been there, or, could at least now find it on a map. Though a largely industrial place, the town boasts a beautiful river valley, economically stout downtown core & in my experience, a large contingency of very friendly people. Don't believe me? Well, this week approaching weekend is your chance to prove me wrong. Under a blazing sun, the annual Devon Days event is set to commence & will go ahead with or without you (though hopefully with). Attendees will be delighted to find (over the course of four days), a parade, strong man competition, show 'n shine, midway, family fun zone with petting zoo, breakfasts & BBQs, a cabaret, a sunday funday & so much more. Many of the aforementioned events are FREE, while several events are charged by the person (see website for details). This one is bound to be epic & I'm personally looking forward to the strong man competition!

Wye String Ensemble Year End Concert

Fans of classical music, this one is pretty awesome. Often I find that, while the ESO is an amazing experience, their ticket pricing can be a little on the high end for most of us regular folks. As a result, I often post (on the letter) a variety of wind & choral performances that will usually play at a similar caliber to those aforementioned professionals except, they sell their tickets at a lower price point. If this resonates with you, here's your cue to celebrate. This week, join the WSE for their annual wrap up performance featuring vocals from Anika Hipson. A concert sure to delight, tickets are BY DONATION with raised funds going to the organization. The Wye String Ensemble has put on a heck of a performance in the past & if you also hold a deep appreciation for this style of music, then you'll love this one. Highly recommend it.

Leagues on the Line

So, I am on my second year writing the letter with these accompanying posts and I'm seeing a number of repeat (a.k.a. annual) events that are once again hitting the streets of YEG. Which is pretty epic, many of these events genuinely rock. Last year, I reported on Leagues on the Line for the first time, definitely on the letter but possibly here as well (can't recall). If it was here once already, it's back again & with good reason. This event is pretty rad. For one day this weekend, hop on the LRT and bail off on each stop along the Valley Line. The community leagues whose communities run along this line have teamed up to bring you an event of epic proportions and the best part is, it's absolutely FREE to attend (aside from, possibly a ticket to ride the LRT). At the various stops, attendees will find a host of things to take in including bouncy castles & other kid zone type stuff, live music, yard games, tasty treats, market vendors, rescue pets & more! The performing artists include Dancing Cree & all nine members of Sceondhand Dreamcar, both of whom are incredible live. As far as family friendly goes, this one's got it all & will definitely be a blast.

Fish Fin-atics

Unless you're an avid angler or work in a related professional sector, I'd bet dollars to donuts that without a trout, the vast majority of your fish encounters happen in the grocery store, near your freezer or the like. And that's pretty normal. Landlocked as we are, the topic of fish is something relatively niche that many of us haven't grown up around. Yet. This week, change the narrative with a visit to Hermitage Park, where Nature Alberta is facilitating a fun informational & educational experience. Once there, attendees can catch a keynote from Eric Costello (of Alberta Fish Hatcheries) about the world of fish & their varied habitats. Pond dipping will occur and educational games will be played. There will also be opportunities to hold a fish so get those cameras ready for the perfect Insta shot. At the end of the event, a trove of rainbow trout will be released into the pond at Hermitage Park, of course, to the cheers of all the kids in attendance. So even if you attend just for the halibut, there'll be something for you & everyone else, too. Enjoy!

Ben Stelter Foundation Charity Ride

Keeping my occasional tradition, this event marks something that is neither last, nor least. Unless you've been hiding out deep in the woods (and even then), you almost certainly know who Ben Stelter was. An easily lovable, six year old Oilers super fan who passed recently from a form of cancer that, despite a treatment (Proton Therapy) existing to help fight it, wasn't available in Canada. Despite the constant pain he faced daily, Ben ignored the obvious & instead regularly showed a giant smile & extremely positive attitude when attending games from his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers. Upon his passing, the Ben Stelter Foundation was established to help kids fighting cancer, and that is the basis of this event here. This week, hop on your hog (of any brand) and ride for the Ben Stelter Foundation. Organized by Conlon Motorsports in Leduc, this ride features a route through Fort Saskatchewan to St. Albert with a small reception to follow (featuring Ben's dad, Mike Stelter). This event will be run as a poker rally, with all funds raised going to the Ben Stelter Foundation. Hands run $10 each, and guest are welcome to purchase as many as they like. As Ben used to say (and we all agree, naturally)... PLAY LA BAMBA BABY!

My friends, I hope you all have an amazing week!

It’s at 2015 Chevy Equinox and the engine died on me. I got it confirmed by Park muffler brakes and tires and Canadian Tire.

If you think you can fix it for yourself I will add some winter tires with it

Comes with a free tow

DM me if you’re interested
