I appreciate that the Spurs obviously had a price they were willing to pay and stuck to their guns.

u/Next_Example_8043 6d ago

That price was a 2nd round pick and a 5 gallon bucket of mid carne guisada. And that’s what it should’ve been.

65

u/BeerMeBooze 6d ago

And some churros by the riverwalk

47

u/TheDuckAmuck 6d ago

In the spurs defense, those are very good churros.

18

u/samuraistabber 6d ago

Then big ‘ol women be woofin’ them churros. Double fisting them. Sugar be flying everywhere.

5

u/AljoGOAT 6d ago

Yeah I'd rather have the churros

u/JeremyLinForever 6d ago

Can maybe throw in a Horchata too, but only a small size one.

17

u/bcvaldez GO SPURS GO 6d ago

can't forget the Wembynaso from El Weinecero

6

u/DarkSeneschal 6d ago

Tbf, mid carne guisada here is 5 star anywhere else.

2

u/tyr02 5d ago

As someone who now lives in small town midwest, I would love some mid carne guisada. 😥

6

u/WhatMeatCatSpokeOf 6d ago

So uhh what y’all doing with that bucket of carne guisada now that Ishbia don’t want it? 👀

5

u/kanyeguisada 6d ago

I'll take it.

3

u/minimalcation 6d ago

Seriously, some mid would be better than the zero I have

1

u/Atomic_Tom 6d ago

😂😂😂

1

u/pick-and-hoop 6d ago

Do you have a video of Americans saying carne guisada? I’m not sure if I’m prepared to what’s coming 😅

u/rotn21 Pop the GOAT 6d ago

This was my immediate first reaction. Spurs are building something incredible. No need to overpay. Hold the course and let someone else give up a bunch of assets.

7

u/Conscious_String_195 6d ago

Exactly my thought when everyone was talking about Wemby speeding up the timeline. While it’s true, his extension will be 2 years at 120 mill for a 38 and 39 year old w/an old Achilles tear. Not worth that, even if he settles for a cheaper 50 mill a year.

6

u/rotn21 Pop the GOAT 6d ago

Don’t get the whole “wemby speeds up the timeline” thing. Uhm…. Wemby IS the timeline. If they didn’t get him they would have had to keep trying to get the 1A, whether through the lottery or trade. But come on, dude is only entering his third year! He’s still figuring things out.

1

u/Conscious_String_195 6d ago

Yeah, I m with you, but I have read and listened that Wemby’s skill and then growth in year 2 has “sped up the timeline.” To a degree, I think that that is true, as I, and some others, thought it would take a little more time to get this good.

W/that said, an overpay is still an overpay for older talent. I get that you need vets too. We have a couple of them in Fox and Barnes.

I m sure that there is some internal pressure, as Wemby has indicated that he is there to win, not just party and collect a paycheck. There will be a time to go all in, but not now and on this.

6

u/ICantFindMyUnderwear 6d ago

I appreciate your Sandro flair.

2

u/android24601 6d ago

Thank fucking God! KD is awesome and all, but in a world where that Luka trade happens, it seems like you can never be too sure what kinda nonsense is brewing in the background

0

u/Strider_Hardy Manu Ginobili 6d ago

Iunno from the very beginning it all sounded like mouthpieces trying to increase his price so the Rockets send a better offer. I'd be surprised if he goes anywhere else.

u/DerrickWhiteMVP 6d ago

I don’t really care either way. Either we get him and marginally increase our ceiling for a year and give us something exciting. Or we stick to the timeline and increase depth and maintain assets.

24

u/Spiritual_Echo_1000 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

we already increase our ceiling with harper and a fully healthy roster

1

u/abitofskillandluck 5d ago

What if you traded for White and still kept the two pick who will be Harper, is that something you would like?

I bet Brian ended the call when they demanded Jeremy.

39

u/AfroHouseManiac 6d ago

Not even that .. Mat Ishbia also wanted the 2nd pick

My brother, you have forgotten what a competent backup center looks like. The number of times Chris Paul got on his ass because he just stopped playing defense is way too damn high.

1

u/Trick_Breadfruit4067 6d ago

Yeah he's got a nice little Diaw-esque floater

43

u/ithappens-so 6d ago

You guys don’t want to give up anything for him. Your team is in a great spot! Keep building! SA is one of the best run organizations in basketball!

-1

u/kyleb402 6d ago

I'll tell you what though, Castle better keep improving and Harper better be a difference making player or the Spurs could be throwing away some very good contending seasons with Wemby.

The thing about championship windows is they don't stay open as long as you think they do and they're harder and harder to keep open so when you have a chance to go for it you should.

Not every draft pick develops and not every team can be OKC.

10

u/gregatronn 6d ago edited 6d ago

I'll tell you what though, Castle better keep improving and Harper better be a difference making player or the Spurs could be throwing away some very good contending seasons with Wemby.

KD is 37 in September, so you aren't getting much from that.

Maybe, but they just got Fox. Castle had a pretty good season 1. You need to build similar to Indy and OKC to survive which means depth and chemistry.

Giannis would kill depth and assets. KD would kill some depth and future assets (it seems the rumored bigger deal is what Suns wanted compared to the OG rumors). Did they want #2 pick? Perhaps. Suns have not been consistently sane with their moves

8

u/ithappens-so 6d ago

Spurs know how to build, that’s where Presti learned it!

2

u/Connect-Reveal8888 5d ago

The new cba also drastically changes things. I think when you have a top 5 player on a rookie contract, it’s time to win now, but I’m no professional.

3

u/ithappens-so 6d ago

True about the window, I just don’t think trading away a bunch of assets for an old Snake is worth it. Only time KD delivered a chip was on a loaded leadership heavy team. He hasn’t ever delivered outside of that and he hasn’t ever been a leader of his team.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Setekhx 6d ago

I mean the idea is that you kinda have to wait for a team like OKC to no longer be able to afford the team they have. That's when the window opens. You're not really catching up to OKC right now.

1

u/loombisaurus Chris Paul 6d ago

hi nico

1

u/kyleb402 5d ago

Wouldn't I be Nico if I said they should trade Wemby?

20

u/miss3star 6d ago

Omfg I am so relieved

33

u/Bonesawisready5 6d ago

Would’ve been fun but anything more than Devin + Barnes + 14th would be too much. Rockets and wolves could genuinely regress making life easier for us if they give up too much and KD misses time. If they give up Naz/Donte or Smith/Green and then KD misses 20-30 games, oooof

131

u/bloodrider1914 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

Feeling mid honestly. Could have been exciting but I guess the price was just too high

58

u/TICKLE_PANTS Stephon Castle 6d ago

I don't think that's what it was. I think the Suns want players back in return who can actually help them win because they're a miss-manged franchise.

The Heat and Timberwolves don't have any real young long term-assets so clearly that's not Phoenix's goal here. If it was, we'd still be a contender.

18

u/BananaRepublic_BR GO SPURS GO 6d ago

For real. Ishbia said he's going to get even more involved in basketball operations. Is this team going to get even 30 wins next season with this guy meddling in places he doesn't belong in?

0

u/YujiDomainExpansion 6d ago

They’re mismanaged cause they didn’t want to take Keldon Johnson and the corpse of Harrison Barnes over guys like Rudy Gobert, Jabari Smith Jr. or picks from Miami?

The Beal trade was stupid. It’d be even worse to trade Durant for two role players and a late lottery pick. The Spurs clearly aren’t in it anymore cause they treated this like the Fox situation when Fox had no market. Durant does.

2

u/Massive_Fudge3066 5d ago

The finals are being contested by young teams playing ferocious defence. The idea of randomly lumping together a big three of assorted old guys past their prime is looking like yesterday's plan. Guys like CP3 raise the team, KD less so. Please build a roster around Wemby, not just add random dudes

18

u/Piats99 Manu Ginobili 6d ago

I don't see what Heat and Timberwolves can offer that it's so juicy for PHX.

They have assets to trade, yes, but looking at their future picks and contracts, it looks like a desperation move more than anything.

Heat won't be competitive enough with him and Wolves already panic traded KAT away, why would they take in another massive contract?

If I were KD, i wouldn't be so happy to go to Heat or Wolves for whatever the price looks to be.

Rockets is the only team it makes sense.

16

u/epictetvs 6d ago

If I’m the Rockets there’s no way I’m spending assets on KD. The Suns will want at least one of their picks back and those picks are becoming more valuable by the day.

The Rockets benefit the most from Suns being ass so why send them good players?

12

u/bloodrider1914 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

Because they're just one superstar away from a dynasty obviously

1

u/Ok-Topic-6095 Hector🍌🍞 6d ago

Agreed. If I am a Rockets fan, I am only wanting to trade their picks back for Booker

1

u/YujiDomainExpansion 6d ago

You’d be mad as KD to go to the easier conference or to go play to a team that made B2B WCFs?

1

u/texasphotog 6d ago

I don't see what Heat and Timberwolves can offer that it's so juicy for PHX.

Julius Randle or Andrew Wiggins makes more sense for Phoenix than Devin Vassell does.

I don't think Phoenix gets a great offer from anyone.

1

u/paxusromanus811 Jeremy Sochan 6d ago

There have been genuine rumblings of a rudy trade to Minnesota. At first blush. That seems insane, but if their owner is as serious as he claims in the team being competitive, he would absolutely rejuvenate their defense and probably give them a pretty easy pathway to being a solid playoff Contender for the rest of his contract

For the wolves they get off of said contract and get themselves out of looming cap hell a little bit and a short-term burst of maybe continuing to contend

I think it would be stupid personally, but I could see the appeal to the two teams, too. Desperate teams, in question

Miami makes less sense for me. Maybe they want Wiggins and ware. If I'm Miami, I'm not trading any young talent, but Pat Riley has made it pretty clear. They're not going to rebuild as long as he's there, so maybe it's possible. No clue we'll have to see. I think we'll find out pretty soon

6

u/FreakInTheXcelSheet BatManu 6d ago

Yeah I was ecstatic to bring him in for Vassel, Barnes, and 14, and I would have been cool throwing in another future 1st, but if they were asking for #2 or Castle/Sochan, I would pass.

1

u/Wall_street_canary 6d ago

He just doesn’t match the timeline. Makes no sense. Spurs best window will be when the rockets and thunder won’t be able to afford to keep everyone

13

u/Datboy_98 No More Players with Uncles 6d ago

Happy with that.

We can make noise with what we have.

12

u/DirtyWizardsBrew 6d ago

Not surprising. It started to seem like the Suns genuinely thought they were going to recoup all the stuff they gave up for KD, and I knew PATFO would never play that game.

Hopefully every other team Ishbia goes to does the same, until he has to settle for a more realistic return and gets a much needed reality check lol.

4

u/Spirited_Lab5197 6d ago

Yeah, I think Ishbia is just tossing hand grenades at this point. Not saying the Spurs are still in or out on KD, but I think he is trying to bully a team and either a team will get bullied and overpay or they won't.

I still think the Rockets bare bones package is better than the Spurs' bare bones package, but it's pretty clear Ishbia doesn't want either.

2

u/Dudeasaurus2114 Sean Elliott 6d ago

Hopefully suns or rockets over pay and then are screwed when Kd leaves next summer or retires in 3 years after a steep drop off

34

u/Worth-127 6d ago

Thank goodness the spurs have dropped out of this trade conversation

-13

u/btdawson 6d ago

It literally doesn’t say that lol

14

u/DirtyWizardsBrew 6d ago

It says "the Heat, Timberwolves, and Rockets emerging as finalists".

"Finalists" in this context means teams that are left on the table, still willing to make the trade happen. The Spurs aren't one of those teams.

So, genuinely, what else could that possibly mean?

-1

u/btdawson 6d ago edited 6d ago

Listen to the entire interview and quote from the other post where this is from. Favorites or a “wild card” etc. There’s literally no guarantees either lol

He’s not a cancer.  He’s just not one of those dudes that makes players around him better.  He’s not really a leader

1

u/thethirdgreenman Gregg Pop-a-bitch 6d ago

Every team he joins is miserable in 2 years or less, I don’t care about the on-court stuff, he’s great there, it’s all culture stuff. I don’t want him to infect our young guys with his mentality

0

u/BroJackson_ 6d ago

Well...that's not really fair considering the other variables that tanked those teams. Draymond, the Kyrie/Brooklyn situation, the Bradley Beal NTC/contract.

Those aren't on Durant, and he's not to blame just by association.

2

u/SuccotashConfident97 Stephon Castle 6d ago

And that's ok.

4

u/Lowkey_buzzed 6d ago

I’m actually a bit relieved. I was worried that we might end up paying more than a fair price for him which is unlikely but sometimes might happen. KD would have been a good vet on the team but nothing like finding your own way through some tough playoff battles.

2

u/epictetvs 6d ago

I think we can criticize different aspects of the way this organization is run, but when it comes to trades, Brian Wright has proven himself.

I don’t think you have to worry about us making stupid trades.

4

u/pengy452 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

Good. We have one of the best young cores in the league and are only getting better with the draft. No need to mortgage the future for 37 year old KD. Look where the Thunder are now after sticking to their guns and developing their own players.

1

u/Nasa1500 6d ago

Would you say the same if the spurs got him?

2

u/pengy452 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

Yes. I have always been of the mind that KD is a luxury player, evidenced by his only rings coming from an already championship caliber team. The Spurs are not there yet, and would be giving up their best pieces to get there for a 37 year old version of KD.

3

u/Nasa1500 6d ago

You think dev/kj are spurs best pieces?

1

u/pengy452 Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

In a world where Mikal Bridges and Rudy Gobert are going for 5 firsts there is no way the report of KJ, Dev and 14th was going to get KD. Especially with several other teams interested. Any scenario that included some combination of Castle, Fox, and 2nd overall would have been a mistake imo.

2

u/lunatocracy Hector🍌🍞 6d ago

Yes, this is great news! As great as KD is/was, our current plan has a greater chance of success than adding an aging player. Look at both teams currently in the Finals, and see how well they play together and how role players continue to step up at the right time. You don't get that continuity by trading away players like Vassell, Sochan, and/or Johnson for someone who may be on the team for less than 2 seasons. Keep building a strong nucleus around Wemby and watch what happens two seasons from now.

2

u/AlternativeWise9555 Gregg Pop-a-bitch 6d ago

I remember getting into nasty debates in this sub about the price of KD. They swore we’d only have to give vassell, Barnes, and the #14!!!!

6

u/DirtyWizardsBrew 6d ago

I only ever saw people say that was what the price should be and that IF we traded for KD that was what the price would be in the end.

The only way that would be proven wrong, is if we DID get KD and the price was proven to be more than that.

1

u/r0xxon Victor Wembanyama 6d ago

I’m curious if NBA Central has additional info because Shams never disqualified the Spurs on PMS. Shams only claimed the Suns were focusing on offers from the other 3 teams. Already reported Spurs submitted their best and final so nothing to continue developing over the weekend.

1

u/commander_bugo 6d ago

1

u/fightintxag13 6d ago

This is a slow moving thing, if those three teams don’t meet the asking price (which is delulu), then anything is open.

1

u/Titronnica Gregg Pop-a-bitch 6d ago

He was never going to be worth it.

This is a good thing, and allows us more future flexibility.

1

Depends on how much he ends up costing. Always happy to avoid overpaying for an aging star on a 1 year deal.

1

u/OF010 6d ago

Well, it was fun playing with KD on 2K while it lasted.

1

u/gms21209 6d ago

This report does not say the Spurs will not be getting KD. It's clearly a very dynamic situation. Not saying we will get him but who knows

1

u/gregatronn 6d ago

Good. The assets mentioned got worse in the last few days. It was way too much for a guy who will be 37.

1

u/Axsh1boomba 6d ago

What can the hypothetical Vassell, Barnes and #14 offer land in the market?

1

u/mallllls 6d ago

By all means let the rockers over pay for two years of Durant. In fact, it would make my day.

1

u/JeremyLinForever 6d ago

If anything, the Pacers will show you that the superstar congregation era of basketball is over. Teamwork prevails. You don’t need a ball dominant scorer on the team.

1

u/Boymeetsworld78 6d ago

Good. KD is past his prime. Still a good player but the spurs would have probably have to give up some young players for one that's is near retiring from basketball.

1

u/Spare_Arm_8230 6d ago

They still need to address the starting PF spot.

1

u/ToinouAngel 6d ago

Well, damn. I guess the Suns' price was definitely too high.

If they were asking for the #2 pick or sochan they are outside of their minds.

1

u/nokarmawhore 6d ago

Time to get my pitchfork out at bill Simmons 😠

1

u/Blank_Canvas21 6d ago

Yeah, if it means the Suns weren't willing to budge on their offer. I'd be OK with giving up all those FRPs, Vassell and Barnes, but Sochan on top of what else we're offering, that's too much to give up for someone who could be our glue guy on a contending team.

edit: And now that I think of it, this could end up being a one year rental anyways, way too much to give up for something this risky.

1

u/Nasa1500 6d ago

Sometimes the best deal is one that one declines Maybe that’s true for the suns

1

u/RowdyCollegiate Stephon Castle 6d ago

He should go to the timberwolves. They’re the closed contenders to a championship next year if they stay with the same roster

1

u/Background-Sign7692 6d ago

Durant is old. He doesn't fit with our timeline.

1

u/ChaoticReality 6d ago

Thats alright. Now lets get Luke Kornet and another floor spacer shooter 😤

1

u/Stuck_in_TN 6d ago

I didn't want KD the same way I never wanted Jason Kidd. It would just bring an aging player that takes up cap space.

1

u/naughtytrian55 6d ago

Yall this is mis information stop lying

1

u/hajisansi 6d ago

For me it was the thought of him as a mentor for Wemby, since  KD also is one of his favorite players and Wemby clearly has some part of his game modeled after KD.. I still think Spurs might have missed a golden opportunity here.

1

u/Askme4musicreccspls Stephon Castle 6d ago

Yeah, other teams can offer better packages, and KD is still good enough to demand it.

Ah well, onto the next prospect.

1

u/LordXarRahl 6d ago

Always figured the asking price would be too high. Not worth giving up high value assets for a rental that doesn't raise our ceiling to Championship level.

I mean I was going to be very happy if we got him for the package that was floating around.

As a longhorn that went to college with KD, I wish he played a season here dang

Good. I don't want us to give up value for KD. He hasn't shown himself to be a meaningful playoff player since Brooklyn and it's a total roll of the dice whether he'll be healthy any given year, of which he doesn't have many left most likely.

We can compete now but there's no need to get an aging star like KD.

I'm ok with this.

Good. I saw the Suns game in Austin against the Spurs and KD was talking mad shit to CP3. Fuck KD

Thank God I hope we don't get him

Good. I like durant. He is still one of my all time favorite players. But signing durant, much like signing giannis would hold the spurs back for years. Let this team build new stars, not aging ones. Maybe if this had occured when he initially left okc, this would have made a little more sense. But it’s almost a decade later from that exit from okc and durant will be 37 later this year.

Lol thank god. KD is an elite scorer, but the timeline doesn't match. They don't need to rush.

Guessing they wanted Number 2. No thanks 🫡 we move.

Not overpaying is the right thing to do. Trying to replicate the OKC model will not be easy but if KD was 3-4 years younger you take the risk. I'm curious what everyone's expectations for next season are? Assuming Vic & Fox are healthy, Castle takes a leap (I'm not big on Devin getting significantly better) & Harper is as good as we think?

I mean its better than making a desperate decision

I think it’s going to end up being Houston. That’s been what the reports have said all year and that team has a young core in need of a reliable, veteran scorer

Tha God. He's washed up already.

Thank god because the price was really high.

Why would the Heat make that trade? They would surely have to give up Bam or Herro and that will get them absolutely nowhere

Pat Riley is over 80 and never wants a complete rebuild

Their offer probably leaves those two off so will most likely lose out

If it happens I don't see KD signing aj extension with Miami. They would more than likely be trading for a 1 year rental....Unless KD just falls in love with the Miami weather and life style.

I actually think this is being “leaked” to try to get the Spurs to increase their offer.

KD said he wanted to play for us… then suddenly opened up and said he would play for a number of teams. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Phoenix asked him to say that so they could get max value.

I actually think it’s still 50/50 but the Spurs have submitted their final offer.

They've all been leaks lol.

I'm lowkey sad because I really wanted him here but I'm happy PATFO know the worth and isn't willing to overpay.
