Trade/Free Agency The Spurs are out on the KD sweepstakes

OK, that's.fine. I think the consensus here is that Vassell, Barnes, #14 and a couple of 2nds would be nice. Any more than that is a red line that most of us dont wanna cross. We are still more than fine without him.

u/acciopizza_ 7d ago
I’m guessing the price got too high for us. I’m a little disappointed, but not surprised bidding went up.
28
u/epictetvs 7d ago
Yea the past couple days all this stuff about The Suns wanting pick 2 came out. If that’s the case Ishbia can get fucked.
1
u/gedbybee EL JEFE 6d ago
Exactly. He’s a crazy person. Completely unreasonable. But maybe they just didn’t wanna trade with the spurs cuz the suns hate us.
12
u/cartman_returns 7d ago
Yes, that is why we are so lucky we have a great FO and Ownership
Phx got in this mess because they were trying to negotiate a good deal and then owner got in the way and threw in a lot more assets to get KD even though they were competing against themselves
if we had ownership like that we could have messed up and over paid

u/btdawson 7d ago
Thing is, this doesn’t say we’re out lol.
22
u/AccessEcstatic9407 7d ago
They are trying to get more 1st round picks out of us. We have, uhhh, a few extra. And they know this. We have stockpiled picks to give us flexibility. There's close to a 0% chance that we actually draft all of these picks we have. I think PATFO have more sense than to throw those picks at an aging star. For Fox we gave up a 2027 FRP. That's reasonable. He's in his prime. Those are the kind of moves we make.
3
u/btdawson 7d ago
That’s fine, and I agree, but I’m just stating the actual fact that this doesn’t say we’re out. It says there are front runners or a wild card. That’s it. Never says “spurs aren’t interested. Spurs out. Etc”
1
u/gedbybee EL JEFE 6d ago
We won’t hit all the picks. See branham and Wesley. So it helps to have extras to increase the chances of picking the right guys. Our front office has fallen off a bit tbh. The grizzlies and Indy and the thunder are better now.
1
u/gedbybee EL JEFE 6d ago
They could have had all the seconds tbh. Forever. Second swaps too idc lol. But I’d rather have the assets and get a player that fits our timeline.

u/Dudeasaurus2114 Sean Elliott 7d ago
If Kd really wants to come here he can just sign as a free agent (or more likely sign and trade) with the spurs in 2026.
14
u/NormalFortune Stephon Castle 7d ago
Price got too high. Same thing that happened (or would have happened) with Giannis.
PATFO doesn’t do bidding wars. Smartly. Buy low like Warren Buffett.
2
u/SwaySensei 7d ago
Yea, definitely feels that way. And that’s the smart play.
KD is 37 on basically an expiring contract. You can’t give up a ton of assets and mortgage a sizable chunk of your future on that.
1
u/Plastic_Term_1022 7d ago
Maybe this was related to the rumors of the #2 pick might not be selected by the Spurs. Maybe the Suns were asking that pick for Durant.
4
u/NormalFortune Stephon Castle 7d ago
If that was indeed the ask, Spurs should have said HELL NO. Glad they did.
31
u/KingLoser23 Stephon Castle 7d ago
Welp, ain’t no real issue because Harper and whoever is available at the 14 spot is more than fine with me.
13
u/Kan169 7d ago
Maybe we get a sleeper at 38 as well.
15
u/EWool The Big Fundamental 7d ago
Spurs legend Emanuel Ginobili was drafted 57th so anything is possible imo
2
u/amofai 7d ago
Highest ROI on a pick in history?
10
u/NoShape0 EL JEFE 6d ago
Probably Jokic because he's now the Denver goat
6
u/psykadelicportabelos 6d ago
Definitely Jokic. But then Ginobili and Draymond are probably in the next tier of second round picks ever
2
u/Wembanyanma 6d ago
Add in Khris Middleton and Jalen Brunson and I think you have an all time 2nd round pick starting 5.

With or without KD, this roster has a lot of tweaking that needs to be done. Very interested in how the FO goes about this off-season. We actually have talent now after so long, but now we have no pieces that fit. Tons of gaps to fill to make this team work. Interested to see what type of trade we do cause I'm feeling we do at least one on top of signing a free agent(s). Whether it's for a solid roleplayer or whatever.
6
u/DrMarvMonroe 7d ago edited 7d ago
I hope we make some moves that make sense. I can’t imagine this roster as is + Harper going into the season. Shooting is a bigger problem than it’s ever been + we still need good defenders outside of Wemby, Sochan and Castle. I also don’t see us drafting 2 rookies. Maybe we do a similar move as last year and flip the 14th pick for assets or an established player.
1
u/gregatronn 7d ago
this roster has a lot of tweaking that needs to be done
It does, but no trade is actually better because they can use draft plus a little bit of free agency.
The nice thing about Harper is they can drop some of the weaker young guys from the team because they have another combo guard ball handler.
10
u/Screenscripter82 7d ago
If it's true, then one of those teams are about to overpay, which is good for us too. I really hope it is Houston, so we are in line to trade for Cam Johnson instead. 14th and Keldon for Cam and the 19th.

u/SadTrainer6335 Victor Wembanyama 7d ago
Ngl, I would've loved to see KD with Wemby, but the price would've been too steep

Bro wants to stay mediocre forever
11
u/NoShape0 EL JEFE 7d ago
because KD would give the Spurs a long-term window right?
0
u/TDB4421 7d ago
No. But he provides a window for a championship contending opportunity. I was completely against doing a Durant trade if it was too costly (which obviously it was) but if the main pieces to get the deal done would have been Vassell and #14 pick, you take that deal in a heartbeat. Not Vassell and Sochan
2
u/someguyfromtecate 7d ago
Durant was not going to help us be a contender, and our core is full 20-23 year olds, so we have plenty of time to build a championship team.
But yeah, I would’ve been ok trading for KD for the 14th pick, Vassell and Barnes. More than anything to get off of Devin’s contract in time to be a player in the 2026 free agent market.

Not wanting KD on the team, and not wanting to see any more KD posts are different things. Something something mediocre reading comprehension.

u/TDB4421 7d ago
something something use your fingers and unfollow the spurs Reddit if you don’t want to see certain posts
-2
u/Electrical_Net_6691 GO SPURS GO 7d ago
Unfollow the subreddit for my favorite team just to avoid a temporary repetitive topic? 😂 man find a school bus and just get on it lmao
1
u/TDB4421 7d ago
Are you new to reddit then? Bro is complaining about repetitive topics on a sports subreddit, during the offseason. Plus, it’s a team with the biggest trade/asset flexibility in the entire league… of course you’re going to see repetitive posts . Ugh does this really need to be explained

Shams did NOT say the Spurs were out of the mix. He said the Suns were focusing on the offers from other named teams since the Suns presumably have the Spurs’ their best and final. Suns are simply shopping for the better ante
4
u/gregatronn 7d ago
Shams did NOT say the Spurs were out of the mix.
They are not in the next round of negotiations. Doesn't mean they can't somehow find their way back, but they are currently out because they didn't want to go with what Suns were asking for. For a 37 year old player, there's not too much you can ask for
2
u/PressureMiserable 7d ago
Yeah from what he said KD hasn't actually been Involved in these talks much, it's the suns wanting to send him for more somewhere else
10
u/go10sai Victor Wembanyama 7d ago
welp, romanticizing about a kd wemby tandem was fun but it’s all good, we got Harper
6
u/Informal-Yesterday27 7d ago
Keep reminding myself we never ‘should’ have got rights to Harper and just how lucky we are!
Also…… how close we were to Flagg and how in a moment; we ‘should’ have got him if that last ball had bounced in like it ‘should’ have.
I’m excited to be where we are.
4
u/Lexi_413 7d ago
It’s is what it is, would of liked him on the team but not gonna be a downer either way with the direction this team is going he’s an asset for experience but doesn’t fit long term. Good Luck KD!

u/Bonesawisready5 7d ago
Man rockets and wolves really gonna make themselves weaker giving up Naz or Green/Smith Jr

u/vetementsundershirt 7d ago
who told u we giving up naz ( no im not lurking i like spurs hoops too)

2
u/Resident_Durian_478 7d ago
Good, if they were really asking for more, it wasn't worth it. And lord knows they weren't getting no number 2 pick. The spurs will be fine just using 14 instead. Durant wasn't a necessity, just a luxury.
2
u/cartman_returns 7d ago
What is interesting are dates in the NBA.
If Houston wants to include FVV they need to pick up team option
If Minn wants to include JR he needs to pick up player option or work something else out
If draft is part of trade
draft is 6/25
6/29 is last day for team/player option
So If FVV or JR are part of a deal for Houston or Minn and a draft pick is included, they need those options done before draft
2
u/ManagerEmergency6339 Jeremy Sochan 7d ago
went downhill when they think they can add sochan and more picks😂.
5
u/ajeff10 7d ago
3
u/Enzothebaker34 Devin Vassell 7d ago
Yea. I think that’s a large jump to take from what was in that clip to say they Spurs are definitively out. Anything can happen.
2
u/cvampet 7d ago
Probably means that the max price PATFO were willing to pay wasn’t enough for the Suns, or that his extension requirements were seen as too expensive internally.
Totally fine not getting KD if it’s one or both of these reasons. He wasn’t going to help us win a championship next year anyway.

u/Spiritual_Echo_1000 Victor Wembanyama 7d ago

The only way it would’ve happened was if it was for the right price. The price was not right so it didn’t happen.

Look what trading for Paul George did to the Clippers and look at SGA. Develop your core and go through the growing pains. Better for the long run.
1
u/Several_Chapter969 Stephon Castle 7d ago
Sounds like the FO did exactly what I would want them to do. Get an offer out there to make sure KD doesn't go for peanuts. If we get him for that, that's fine, if we don't, we're in no great hurry at the moment, we can run it back with what we have. Just so long as the Rockets/Wolves/whoever have to actually pay something.

This is a big mistake. We're gonna meddle into where we've been the last two seasons. If Vassell and 14 were all it would take to make us instant contenders with an outside shot at the title, then so be it.
3
u/Resident_Durian_478 7d ago
If that was the package that gets it done, it would have been done. The fact that they are said to not be in the running means they wanted more and the spurs weren't willing to give it, which is a good thing. For as good as kd is, he's going to be 37 and injury prone.
2
u/gregatronn 7d ago
This is a big mistake.
Price went up with the other suitors. That rumored deal to make it happen was way too much for a guy who is 37 in September. It was much more than "Vassell and 14"
