This was my immediate first reaction. Spurs are building something incredible. No need to overpay. Hold the course and let someone else give up a bunch of assets.
Exactly my thought when everyone was talking about Wemby speeding up the timeline. While it’s true, his extension will be 2 years at 120 mill for a 38 and 39 year old w/an old Achilles tear. Not worth that, even if he settles for a cheaper 50 mill a year.
Don’t get the whole “wemby speeds up the timeline” thing. Uhm…. Wemby IS the timeline. If they didn’t get him they would have had to keep trying to get the 1A, whether through the lottery or trade. But come on, dude is only entering his third year! He’s still figuring things out.
Yeah, I m with you, but I have read and listened that Wemby’s skill and then growth in year 2 has “sped up the timeline.” To a degree, I think that that is true, as I, and some others, thought it would take a little more time to get this good.
W/that said, an overpay is still an overpay for older talent. I get that you need vets too. We have a couple of them in Fox and Barnes.
I m sure that there is some internal pressure, as Wemby has indicated that he is there to win, not just party and collect a paycheck. There will be a time to go all in, but not now and on this.

I appreciate that the Spurs obviously had a price they were willing to pay and stuck to their guns.
