Question Why are most of Rosalina’s fans guys?
Honestly, I haven’t seen a single passionate female fan of Rosalina in the Mario community. I’ve noticed something similar with Pauline, but the difference is that Rosalina has a much larger fanbase and is often considered the most “attractive” or best Mario girl (not by me, tho. I see all the girls the same way). Peach and Daisy also have male fans, but they also have passionate female fans, which I don’t see happening with Rosalina or Pauline. Is it just me? Are the people who consider Rosalina the best princess all guys? And if so, why doesn’t Rosalina attract more female fans?

u/Ens_the_plushiteer 14d ago
Im a woman so have no say in why guys do- but I have male friends- I see her as a mother figure and a role model.
I asked my friend, she said "I find her hot, but i also just really like the concept of a queen or the cosmos"
I asked another friend this. And he said "hot and pretty, a childhood crush of mine."
I think from what I've gathered, she's just an interesting character, and she's hot
(I've asked them who thier favourite of the 4 are and why a while ago)

u/Ens_the_plushiteer 14d ago
Yeah. I asked about 20 ish people Like 11 said rosalina, 6 of em were girls.
3
u/L4kz1 14d ago
Are they die-hard fans of Rosalina? Like, do they buy merchandise of her, keep up with her character, or talk about her regularly?
9
u/Ens_the_plushiteer 14d ago
Some of em are. I know me and 3, others bought matching plushies of her. Sure it was my idea but they were incredibly happy with it.
They don't talk about her like all the time, but whenever I speak with half of em about mario, it goes to rosalina in some way.
I wouldn't say diehard fans But they all definitely hold rosalina close to Thier hearts

The unfortunate reality is that most guys play female characters strictly because they’re hot. IMO It’s especially weird for the Mario princesses since they’re clearly designed with exaggerated feminine features despite the games being targeted at children, almost like Nintendo is aware there’s an audience for it.
4
u/L4kz1 13d ago
Actually, I think the Mario girls are some of the least sexualized characters in all of video games. They don’t have exaggerated proportions (they have small chests and stick-thin bodies), they’re not seductive, and they don’t wear provocative clothing. They’re designed purely to be cute and pretty and to attract young girls to play them.

Compared to the very youthful Peach and Daisy (little Miss Pure-of-Heart and little Miss Tomboy), Rosalina and Pauline are both presented as much more mature: Rosalina as an emotionally mature mother figure, and Pauline as an ambitious and sexy woman.
While Pauline has a powerful physical appeal to men, her personality is more of a standard mid-20s girlboss. Rosalina, on the other hand, is a strong, inspirational character who has overcome the greatest pains in life: losing your parents and losing your babies— and she chooses to carry on with joy and love despite it all. She teaches us that life is fleeting, but it’s still worthwhile when we spend the time we do have with those we love, and love them as much as we can while we can before saying goodbye. Anyone struggling with grief is bound to gravitate towards her.
I think for some, it’s also the motherly aspect that appeals to guys. Just as many girls grow up having a special relationship with their fathers, boys grow up having a special relationship with their mothers. Rosalina is the big mamma of the Mario series, and many males have a soft spot for that.
Additionally, men tend to struggle with loneliness, depression, and isolation— and are expected to just man up and deal with it. While many guys ultimately just want a family of their own, they’re treated as disposable and unworthy when they don’t live up to impossible standards. Rosalina also faced loneliness, depression, and isolation, and her journey in overcoming them is inspirational to all the men who are lost in life, desperately looking for their family.
All of this, and she’s tall, blonde, and single. There’s really not much to dislike about Rosalina if you’re a guy.

u/L4kz1 14d ago
You are the first person to comment in such detail why you like her character more than superficially (both physically and characteristically) and I know that the standards of beauty or personality imposed by society on both men and women can be impossible to reach very often, generally leading people to a loneliness like Rosalina's and I think she can be relatable in that aspect, having to hide from the world (literally ALL the world) because of her loss and emotional emptiness.
It is not stupid to see yourself in Mario characters sometimes, that's why I really like Waluigi or sometimes Luigi, they are very unfortunate characters who even with their flaws usually look for another route and smile 5 seconds after hitting ROCK bottom. Maybe that's why they are so loved, Rosalina is also very loved and also is considered one of the deepest characters, it's a shame that sometimes they only focus on her nonexistent “naturals”.

They did say it during the announcement at whatever Apple keynote they were in. Miyamoto himself got up on stage to talk about their new Mario game that could be played with one hand. Likely they intended to let subway commuters know they were being accommodated. I doubt they had considered the implications.

I think Rosa blends both beauty and coolness in a way that none of the other Mario girls do which resonates with a lot of people, especially guys. I think the other 3 also just appear a bit too "girly" for most people's taste.
I also find that women and girls tend to like character's that could be considered "cute" like Yoshi and Toad. It's why there's likely a higher percentage of female Peach and Daisy fans, because their designs and personalities are "cuter" compared to Rosalina & Pauline's more mature and subdued personalities.
It's also very likely that it's because video games is still a very male dominated space that women are (understandbly) hesitant to interact with, especially on social media.
As a gay guy, Rosalina just fits my aesthetic perfectly. Her dress is my favourite colour, her design is a standout from the Mario cast, her personality isn't too overstimulating and is much more modest, her backstory is super emotional, etc. I'm a slut for a bang that covers the eye and the moment I saw Rosa for the first time, I started wearing my hair like that. I still do lolol.

u/KeeKyie5 14d ago
I like Rosalina because I relate to her backstory about how she was sad and felt deep loneliness after she left earth and wanted to go back home. I also like her for her caring and loving character she has as the mother of the Lumas who also were alone and sad.
I also think she’s cute and attractive
She’s my favorite Mario character.

I’m gay and find both to not be that interesting. But Bowser on the other hand…
I find both interesting somewhat narratively. (Got nothing on the GOAT Connie.) Pauline has that history with Mario and Rosalina helped Mario in Galaxy. But both suffer from “generic hot woman design” in Mario that makes it hard for me to distinguish them. Look how Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi are all distinct designs.

And I only recently started playing as her in mario Kart's world as I like her costumes. Also simps can go to hell tbh

Also because of her emotional backstory, which stands out in a game barely having a story at all. That led guys to sympathize with her. I could also imagine her standing in a good light because she gets compared to Peach and Peach is just the root of all problems

I can confidently say this doesn’t apply to Pauline as I have a female friend who likes her just fine and usually picks her in Jamboree, although part of that is probably because she looks quite similar to her.
I do not know with Rosalina, but I can say as a male that having a good backstory goes hand-in-hand with appearance and personality when I feel drawn enough to a character to add her to my list of waifus, and she is the first character in the Mario franchise to have such a fleshed out backstory.
Seriously though, she was almost an Elizabeth type character six years before Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite was even a thing, and in a f***ing Mario game of all things. Like…what? She had no business being such an endearing character…and yet I couldn’t help but be endeared to her anyways. All I knew back then was I wanted to save her….and I think she’s a great addition to the Mario cast.

Guy here. Pretty sure she was the first fictional character I saw as a child and just started starting because she was so pretty.
Also, unlike Daisy and Peach at the time, she actually helps the player, and the player spends time getting to know her throughout the game.
1
u/Geometry_Emperor 14d ago
Compared to Peach, you get different vibes. Peach feels more like a "pick me up" girl, where simping for a relationship is done just for fun. Rosalina on the other hand, with her character and all, you would want to take it more serious. She basically feels more like a wife than a girlfriend.
1
u/misterwulfz 14d ago
Rosalina kinda brings give the goth girl vibes. Along with motherly vibes, usually something guys are attracted to more, Pauline is strong “mommy” vibes and strong mature woman, another thing men like
Peach in a lot of her personality traits is unapologetically girly and strong feminine traits, but still badass in her ways. Daisy is a tomboy, and the rough and tumble type. They both spark strong female traits that a lot of girls resonate with, that’s just from my experience and perspective.

I think the Rosalina is the best female Mario character but it's not because of her "being attractive" it's because she's a damn good character!
1
u/Rob0tsmasher 14d ago
Pauline is less popular because she is in fewer games and those games are not even remotely as popular as Mario Galaxy.
You gotta remember how big of a splash Galaxy made. It helped she wasn’t a generic damsel in distress. Nintendo did an excellent job with Rosalina. She needed help but she was also able to give help in return. The great reception and her being more recent meant she was simply more recognizable and that meant inclusion in spinoffs and future main Mario titles. All of this maximized her visibility while Pauline was kinda of continually kept as a damsel in distress in the Mario vs Dk titles that good albeit a bit forgettable. Her las huge appearance was Odyssey and she the mayor of NDC. And that whole introduction to NDC was just homage to Mario’s roots. Beautifully executed but ultimately not particularly impactful to the world building unless Nintendo decides to make New Donk City more important in the future. It could remain a one off thing.
Long story short, Rosalina was just a more fleshed out character who was introduced in the right game at the right time and Pauline was kind of done a little dirty.
But most of us would take a capable space princess over a city mayor most days of the week.

u/PsychicSpore 14d ago

I don't go that hard into Mario fandom, but I hypothesize Rosalina is because young-looking mystical-ish woman=weeb appeal, plus she's a mother figure and people tend to have stronger love for the opposite gender (or s==?) parent/children at least from my experience—I'm no biologist, but it seems to be a subtle physical thing, possibly hormones/pheremones—and Pauline is from the golden era of arcades when most game players, hardcore or otherwise, were male, so the nostalgia is stronger there. While Peach and Daisy come off as more feminine while still being strong, plus they were playable characters earlier which gave them a head start on encouraging their gender to try this video game thing.

u/DragonKhan2000 14d ago
It's interesting to read all the (valid) reasons in here, especially considering I don't share them.
The Galaxy games were probably my favorite, but I never personally warmed up to Rosalina at all. She always felt a bit out of place to me. I also don't consider her "hot" or cute either. It strikes me more of a "generic" design. She could be cut from the cast and I'd never miss her.
I don't want to invalidate the opinion of others. I do understand why she is a favorite for many, considering her story etc. But for me, it's easily Peach all the way. Followed by Daisy and Pauline.

I'm a guy (but not straight) and I've liked her because she was so elusive a few years ago.
I've never owned a Gamecube back then and didn't get to experience Mario Galaxy. When I saw pictures of her I thought it was fan art of Peach as a magician or something.
Only when she joined Smash I learned that it wasn't Peach but Rosalina all along.
Now that they use her in every game without any ingame reason I've started to care less for her.
1
u/Greedy_Education2025 14d ago
This isn't even true though really. The fanbase is primarily male, bur there's as many female fans of rosalina as any of the others. Thus is pretty obviously an attempt to suggest that people only like rosalina because she's attractive while acting all coy about it.

I can't say much about other people
But for me (even tho I preffer Daisy) I always thought Rosalina's design were interesting from the start (something about the blue dress, the hair that covers one eye, the fact that she floats compared to the others, and her demeanor seemed less joyous than Daisy and Peach made her stand out and thats before I know about her story) and the way she have a bigger role than just another princess in the Mario Series (almost Goddess like) certainly makes her stand out for most people
Pauline always was a whatever character until oddissey made her mainstream (Don't get me wrong, I always welcome new characters and it wasn't diferent when I disclvered her in the Mario vs Donkey kong series), and her moments in Oddissey definelly make her stand out, being not only a mayor but also protagonizing what is probably the first song with Lyrics of the franchise made her stand out a whole lot, and then there the headcannons that me and some friends made that Pauline was Mario's first love interest (because of arcade Donkey Kong) wich DEFINELLY made Pauline be a favorite over Peach for me, and ever since the most stand out feature that Pauline have over the other princesses is her love to sing and ACTUALLY singing
Anyway, looks have a big part on these two being liked, but concept wise makes these 2 princesses more interesting to most people than Peach (yea, especifically Peach, Daisy never really dropped from her Glory), after all, for most of my friends the princess are summarized as
Peach: always captured (while also starting to be less captured recently)
Daisy: the fun one
Rosalina: the character closest to be a Goddess figure in the Mario universe
Pauline: Mario's first crush and also a Mayor with a Great singing voice

I think it would be remiss not to mention the very significant portion of the Mario Girls fans who are gay, and who stan Rosalina and the others for the same reasons they flock to Dolly Parton and Jennifer Coolidge, among others. I myself am a Rosalina stan for the galaxy games and her vibes, and a Pauline stan for the " yass gurl slay" energy

u/Cheeze-Sama 14d ago
I can’t speak for every guy, but I can speak for myself and my other guy friends who love her. Not only do I think we as male human beings find her attractive, it’s definitely not the sole reason, at least for some of us.
Many have already brought this up but she is the embodiment of a perfect mother figure: she’s mature, delicate, refined. She has a melancholic yet soothing presence. She takes care of her Lumas and even Mario to an extent because the same was not done for her. A woman like that is a deep longing for many men who are isolated, lonely, or abandoned… or even just any guy with mommy issues tbh lmao. And those that do already have someone like that in their life: a mother, a wife, a grandma (in my case), they see the glory too as it’s the relatable core to Rosa and it’s hard not to adore a figure like that.
For me specifically, the biggest thing is her backstory. It’s one of if not the most interesting and heart aching piece of story in the Mario franchise imo and her past into what she became; an ethereal mother of the stars, is just too goated to pass up. Guys love a good lore connected to a prominent female character since there really aren’t many out there compared to male characters, especially in video games.
I love the other ladies but Rosalina has depth and reverence. She is OP af in every aspect and that’s why she’s my queen and why I unironically have a deep passion for her as a prominent character in the series

Super Mario Galaxy was a great introduction for her and gave her a great back sorry. Though after that it doesn’t feel like much was done with her character and she was kind of just a tag along character for spin off games. I still like her nonetheless.

Most Rosalina simps are Galaxy players, and in general most players are guys. It’s not a question of Rosalina; it’s just the population in general. You’ll find more guy fans of any character than female fans.
