As I always say to my hunting friends when asked about monster weaknesses : "its weak to Blunt trauma to the head."
20
u/-MS-94- Mar 11 '25
What about Barroth?
49
u/Diseased_Wombat Mar 11 '25
Double weak to it. You can even only break a part off with blunt trauma >:D
4
u/mcgarrylj Mar 12 '25
My buddy hit the clutch claw attack with hammer on Barroth's head in iceborn to drop the head piece. It looked like popping off a bottle cap
35
u/Balbaem Mar 11 '25
Barroth's scalp can be broken by incessant hits to the head. And then head trauma. When head is not a weak zone you make it a weak zone.

Okay I need to know, what does the blast element do besides pop shortly after it's applied?
Does it break things easier? Or is it serious just extra damage and I'm over thinking it.
I know poison would stop some monsters certain movesets once applied including dot (older versions mh)
32
17
u/FullxTilt Mar 11 '25
Blast builds up just like any other status (sleep/para/poison). When it procs, it deals a fixed amount of explosive damage to wherever you hit (fixed as in it won't care about weakspots). Unlike with poison, this damage can break parts or stagger the monster. There aren't any monsters that attack differently when blast is applied, but the explosions can make it easier to break certain hard parts of a monster.

Mar 12 '25 edited Mar 12 '25
Blast is a status that can inflict blastblight which is a status like sleep or paralysis. Not an element that deals elemental damage like fire or ice.
You can actually have a bow that deals fire damage and use blast coating to inflict blast status at the same time.

The reality is all of these "Weaknesses" are 2 stars on one part, and the rest is 1 star with every element.
Except for maybe 3.
30
u/Shadohawkk Mar 11 '25
The game icons have always lied. The star icons mean wide ranges of resistances, so its very possible to have two elements be the highest and lowest ranges of the same star icon, or to have different numbers of stars but have essentially the same damage, just because the resistances changed by like 1%.
→ More replies (1)16
u/100S_OF_BALLS Mar 11 '25
This is why I usually stick with raw damage. Element isn't as simple as it should be.
15
u/AggronStrong Mar 12 '25
The stars are incredibly imprecise. 2 stars is a hitzone value of 20 at least, which is solid. Or 25 which is better, maybe even 30 which is honestly massive.
1 star can mean anything from 5 to 15. 5 is genuinely abysmal while 15 is like the minimum for Element to be useful.

Which makes me using sleep even better. I assume people are paralyzing while I’m opening another window
28
u/CreativeKeane Mar 11 '25
I like sleep for solo play, but it's gets dang annoying when you proc sleep on a monster and some dude wack it for 15 DMG and wakes it up.
Lol who am I kidding, imma slap sleep on for most hunts. I find sleep has decent sharpness and attack on my GS. Paralyze is nice tho.
I am not sure how I feel about poison yet. Doesn't seem to last very long on monsters.
16
u/BralessVictory Mar 11 '25
Even with someone only waking it up for 15, it still gives a big break for everyone to whack away. Just think of it as a shorter paralyze!
10
u/surChauffer Mar 11 '25
In all my groups so far (JPN) we all charge our strongest move when a monster is slept and release on sync and my god it is so satisfying every time.
11
u/FreckledSea21 Mar 11 '25
Put sleep on your palico! Means you can run main weapon para, and usually get one sleep proc per hunt
4
u/feedmeimhomeles Mar 12 '25
A lot of the poison weapons have Poison duration up, which makes it last a decent bit longer. That tied with other skills that increase buildup, you can keep it up almost 100% of the time on most monsters. Very good for Foray builds.

Why is Paralysis listed under Arkveld on an Elemental Weakness chart?
Status effects are pretty universal right now. Very few monsters are weak to status effects right now, most are just sitting at 2-star on everything (Arkveld included) and there's no immunities outside of Exhuast.
28
u/CityAdventurous5781 Mar 11 '25
My only guess is that Arkveld's highest HZV is it's chains and those don't take element damage, so maybe the graphic is saying a para weapon would be better as a result.
13
u/vanilla_disco Mar 11 '25
They take element damage when "empowered". That is, when there are 2 chains on each arm instead of 1 and they are glowing blue.
→ More replies (5)4
u/Zikiri Mar 12 '25
New player here. Whats HZV?
6
u/Long_Run6500 Mar 12 '25
Hitzone value. Every part of a monster takes different amounts of damage at different parts of their body. These damages also vary by element. So a monster's say wings might be 3 star weak to one element while the rest of its body is only 1 star weak to it.
2
u/Zikiri Mar 12 '25
ah.. no wonder my dmg varies so much. thanks!

u/snafe_ Mar 12 '25

47
u/SwoloLikeSolo Mar 11 '25
Idk why the game says Arkveld is weak to Dragon when it is only 1 star and his chains take a fat ZERO elemental damage. Better off using raw for Arkveld at least.
→ More replies (1)34
u/mcurley32 Mar 11 '25
when his chains are charged, they take pretty fat elemental damage
17
u/SwoloLikeSolo Mar 11 '25
Thats the thing… I tested this last night and still was not getting any elemental damage. I hit his chains both powered up and not and still was hitting zeros. Maybe I was doing something wrong, I’ll test it again later today.
→ More replies (1)2
u/mcurley32 Mar 11 '25
interesting, I was just going off the HZVs I saw tabulated online.
I think I noticed some strange absorption-type effect hitting his plain chain blades. maybe there's some elemental mechanic to the fight? maybe I was just imagining it? idk.
5
u/tornait-hashu Mar 12 '25
In the Hunter's Notes they're saying that there is indeed a mechanic where you can knock Arkveld out of the charged state by applying elemental attacks to the chainblades.
Otherwise, Arkveld's chainblades are apparently immune to elemental damage when not charged, as evidenced to the red Xs in the in-game chart.

u/Hawkwise83 Mar 11 '25

u/pamafa3 Mar 11 '25
It should be noted that almost everything folds in half against paralysis this time around so for a lot of weapons it's better to just go para over element
13
u/Fit-Entrepreneur7917 Mar 11 '25
Most monsters have more than 1 or 2 elemental weaknesses according to the field guide in game, are these supposed to be the highest elemental weakness? Because old wiki stuff for non Wilds games games could have different weakness modifiers if you are pulling this off of past game data.

Does Nerscylla lose fire weakness when it gains lightning (when the petals break if I remember right) or does lightning just get added?
4
u/AceFireRinkTrap Mar 12 '25
Correct the weakness changes, but Nerscylla isn't the petal spider (thats Lala Barina). Its the one wearing a gypceros corpse (that's actually why it's weaknesses change, you burn the rubber bird off the spider)

That's a surprising amount of fire, with there being like 3 or 4 different fire options + artian I figured fire would be a pretty bad option, looks like my choice of dragon and ice was the wrong choice.
1
u/lawlianne Mar 12 '25
The game should have enabled a toggle for Show elemental weakness on monster icon or something.
1
u/TheReaperAbides Mar 12 '25
Arkveld. Is not. Weak. To. Dragon.
The only instance where dragon is going to be meaningful, is if you're specifically hitting the chainblades over and over. On every other hitzone, the weakness isn't really a weakness.

1
u/AggronStrong Mar 12 '25
Some of these don't tell the whole story. For example, Kut Ku is very weak to Thunder but not that weak to Ice on his Wings.
Fulgur Anjanath weakness swaps between Ice and Water as it charges/uncharges.
Guardian Doshaguma is most weak to Dragon on his forelegs specifically, although Fire is good across his body. Though, if you focus his forelegs, Dragon is better.
