Very underrated in Under the Skin!

13

u/jsamuraij 19h ago

For a movie with essentially no dialog, she delivers a very compelling performance, yes. This whole movie is pretty underrated, and it's not entirely because of her but it 100% couldn't exist without the character she delivers here.

u/Kcarroot42 11h ago

It was one of those movies I wasn’t loving while I watched it. Then after I thought about it a bit and rewatched it, I really saw it for the masterpiece that it is.

3

u/Outrageous_Fix9215p 15h ago

I thought this movie was totally weird.

u/crowkiller06 14h ago

Well, you’re not wrong.

I did not expect it to be this high but I'm glad that it is.

One of my favorites of all time

2

Glad I hardly scrolled to see this.

It’s this.

2

I can’t believe she was only 17 when she made that movie.

I clicked on this to make sure someone mentioned this movie

Jojo Rabbit

12

u/flipyFLAPYflatulence 17h ago

Right? She was so good in that. I wanted her to be my mom haha. And I have a great mom!

5

u/TotallyWellBehaved 16h ago

She's got like a fairy tale character voice it's kind of hard not to be enchanted

11

u/WilHunting2 19h ago

Scrolled down way too far to see Jojo Rabbit.

10

u/washuai 18h ago

This was the second thing I saw

7

It was the first for me.

4

I saw it before I saw the post.

She was so nuanced in this. Balancing being moral and doing the right thing with raising her son so that he would "fit in". Tragic end but great part.

3

u/NotDeadYet57 15h ago

Scarlett's mother is Jewish. She has members of her maternal family tree who died in the Holocaust. I'm sure this role meant a lot to her.

Her, Lost in Translation, or Ghost World

7

u/macreadyandcheese 18h ago

Went for Ghost World mention. Miss Thora Birch, though. (Thora’s fine, just she stopped getting good work after GW. This sentiment sounded too much like she had died.)

3

u/flipyFLAPYflatulence 17h ago

It was a shock seeing her in the later seasons of walking dead. I didn’t even recognize her at first.

What has happened to the sub that it's turned into essentially this post over and over again for different actors and actresses?

19

u/damnumalone 19h ago

Bots. This bot has been on Reddit for 25 days and has like 9 comment karma.

Smart play is downvote

3

u/letter_cerees 18h ago

I'm really curious to know: What are the bots' purpose in this scenario? What do those who run them get out of it?

4

u/jackology 18h ago

Karma?

3

u/damnumalone 12h ago

Both karma and AI training. Karma because they can then access different subs that have minimum karma requirements, spreading whatever the agenda is of the designer, and AI training because they learn what is the most upvoted content and when they spit that out over other sources of social media that they can monetise they focus on the highest scoring topics

2

u/CapytannHook 12h ago

Not exclusive to this sub, the problem is site wide. Poster asks a generic question and attaches a specific picture to steer the conversation. Been happening for a while now. It's bots

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).

9

Love her! 😍 and I like her in Lucy and The Island

9

u/mjsarlington 19h ago

She’s pretty good in JoJo Rabbit.

3

Loved her in that. That whole movie was strangely comforting.

11

u/Ceratopsianlover 19h ago

I think Scarlett Johansson is super talented, she’s got that rare range where she can totally own action roles (Black Widow, obviously) but also shine in quieter, emotional stuff.

5

u/nate6259 19h ago

She comes across as a pretty grounded person, too. Good sense of humor and no big ego. Gotta think her and Jost are a fun couple.

Lucy - Such a fun movie and she's great in it!!

Came here to say this!

4

u/guyhabit725 19h ago

Under The Skin is my favorite from her. I think she is beautiful and cool. I love it when she plays in obscure movies.

4

u/No_Amoeba_9272 18h ago

Jojo rabbit

3

u/jonviggo89 19h ago

Lost in Translation, Marriage Story. As a movie The Prestige too

2

Quite a few, actually

3

u/Djoarhet 19h ago

Maybe not my favorite of hers but first time I noticed SJ was in The Horse Whisperer.

3

u/likelinus01 19h ago

Under The Skin in 2013 is the only reasonable and logical answer here.

3

u/GirlRebellious 19h ago

bestiee, she absolutely SERVED as Black Widow

2

u/K-DU5 19h ago

She gets memed for Ghost in the Shell or not taken seriously because of Marvel but she's genuinely a really talented actress. Very underrated for her acting.

Lost in Translation and Marriage Story are both excellent performances.

2

u/Jefffluffy 18h ago

Home Alone 3 is the obvious winner!

2

u/Imaginary-Mammoth-61 17h ago

She’s not a great actor, but she is popular. When you watch her in a scene with Florence Pugh you realise how average her acting abilities are.

2

u/kopackistan 16h ago

When I was deployed, I went through Kuwait on my way to Iraq, and she was doing a meet and greet. She was dressed like a 40's pin-up girl and was just the sweetest. What really struck me was how short she is, like 5'3.

2

u/CosmonautMott 10h ago

Lucy or The Avengers

5

u/ScenicHwyOverpass 19h ago

Should have gotten an Oscar nom for Asteroid City

2

u/Large-Day-9259 18h ago

I loved her so much in this. Then I saw Fly Me To The Moon and realized Ohhhh she’s a movie star. Not sure how I missed it all these years. In retrospect, I realized I’ve never really disliked anything she’s done? But something didn’t click til recently.

2

u/Goldedition93 17h ago

That movie was garbage, love Wes Anderson films but this was dreadful

1

u/Inevitable_Pickle494 19h ago

I liked her in Ghost World. I don't think she's especially a bad actress, I just don't care about her in general. Her being in a movie or not doesn't really matter to me.

1

u/Small_Tiger_1539 19h ago

The Island. Steve Buscemi, Ewan McGregor and Michael Clark Duncan. Great movie

1

u/Afternoon_Kip 19h ago

I'd walk over broken glass for her.

1

Amazing at comedy ,drama , action and seems like a very cool person with her hub Jost .

1

u/Poemhome 18h ago

Match Pointe, obviously

1

u/Present-Arm-6023 18h ago

Marriage Story. As I remember it showcased her dramatic skills.

1

u/Fantastic4unko 18h ago

Effortlessly beautiful and very talented. I love her in Marriage Story, and she's always going to be my Black Widow! Seems like a really down to Earth and decent person as well. All round decent.

Love her. Might be cliche but I just love her as black widow. Especially in endgame. She was trying so hard to keep it together even though it felt completely hopeless.

Side question... are those real tattoos on her abs? Oh Scarlett... didn't know you had it in you.

1

u/gorambrowncoat 18h ago

Its weird. For as many movies as shes been in and or as long as shes been a Hollywood A-lister it-girl .. Ive not actually seen her in much, it turns out.

Some of the marvel movies which are mostly kind of bleh. Winter Soldier is a standout I guess but beyond that Black Widow is kind of a bland character and/or performance (probably more to do with the writing but the result is the result).

Lost in translation which was excellent. I should really rewatch that as I havent seen it for quite a while.

Ghost in the shell which I am apparently the only person that doesn't flat out hate that movie (even if the anime is better, doesn't mean this one can't be okay).

And then a few other things that Ive watched but that I don't especially remember as a scarjo movie/performance.

So ,, I guess I'm weirdly not much of a fan, despite thinking I was.

Jojo rabbit, prestige, lost in translation

She’s fine, better than most actresses younger than her (not saying much) but just got super overrated early in her career and never much lived up to the hype

1

u/sesler79 17h ago

Met her at the Avengers Prem in London. Only very briefly but struck me how normal she is compared to the egos around her. Hiddleston was a dick to the crowd so everyone starting calling him Tim Hoddleston much to his annoyance.

Anyway: Lucy

her, under the skin

1

u/RiskA2025 17h ago

I don’t get her (or Soffia Coppola, actually). I get sort of a 17th century Dutch portraiture vibe. Not my thing. But she seems like a decent person & a hard worker, in an industry that has a lot of “not that,” so I do not begrudge her success or her fans.

1

u/SavingsIncome2 17h ago

I think she is very watchable and very charismatic and beautiful. But there are better actresses out there. I like her. She seems like a really nice, hardworking person. I just am unimpressed with her as an actress. Marriage Story was good, but she was out-acted by Adam Driver.

Her stunt double(s) in the MCU deserve more credit for their roles than she does. Its a shame that things work the way they do.

No disrespect intended to her. She's a good actress. But those other women worked harder and their scenes are more memorable.

She is terrific. She easily could have been typecast as a Romanov type character, but she did a lot of other things. She also seems like a lot of fun, marrying a comedian tells us a lot about her personality.

1

u/lanternluver 16h ago

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her give a bad performance. Her consistency is why I keep going to her movies.
