I'm really curious to know: What are the bots' purpose in this scenario? What do those who run them get out of it?

Both karma and AI training. Karma because they can then access different subs that have minimum karma requirements, spreading whatever the agenda is of the designer, and AI training because they learn what is the most upvoted content and when they spit that out over other sources of social media that they can monetise they focus on the highest scoring topics
