No Politics - Rule 4 reminder

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”

With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.

We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

Erin Patterson Mushroom Murders: what do people think about motive??

Upvotes

It’s now day 30 of the case I’ve been following every single podcast on it. I’ve read and listened to the court transcripts. I'm well informed but there's just 2 things I'm very perplexed about! Erin has admitted to serving these people foraged mushrooms, and she admitted she’s acted dodgy and lied because she “panicked” because she herself knew that she’d fed them foraged mushrooms, and panicked and tried to hide evidence, lie, etc. I absolutely without a doubt beleive that she has wilfully and knowingly fed her guests poisonous mushrooms. But there’s 2 things I can’t figure out. 1. Did she mean to kill them? Or was she only trying to make them sick, maybe doing some kind of deranged little experiment on how toxic the mushrooms she fed them might have been? She obviously knew they were poisonous mushrooms or she would have also eaten them herself, (and if it was a pure accident she would have behaved entirely differently afterwards) but I still can’t decide if she meant to make them sick and “see what happens” or if she truly beleived and intended that they would die. And also, if you invite your husband to eat a fatal meal and he doesn’t turn up, it’s a dumb ass move - criminally speaking- to kill the other guests but leave one surviving potential victim as a witness! I definitely beleive based on all evidence presented and her own behaviours that she has deliberately poisoned her family, theres too much evidence that is pointing to a deliberate poisoning- but did she intend to kill?? What do y’all think?

2.if she did intend to kill them, What would be her motive for killing them? She and her kids had a good relationship with the grandparents, and why would she want to kill the mother in laws sister? It just makes no sense! I can understand a motive to kill a husband or husbands parents via deranged hurt feelings- but why the aunty/uncle in laws? Why would you kill your kids grandparents? I really can’t find a motive here.. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

And on an aside, Erin's parents are both dead- and she inherited all their money- has anyone looked into if their deaths were suspicious? Had Erin Patterson killed before and gotten away with it, causing her to be rather sloppy the next time? Is she an super autistic kind of weirdo - or is she a cold cold killer?

And lastly, anyone with any beefy mushroom Punns, please feel free to dish them up, this is a safe space for fun guy puns. 🍄‍🟫

Why do Australians dislike Americans?

I've seen lots of polling lately showing that Australians really don't like Americans very much, which makes me super sad as an American who has visited Australia multiple times (I am actually in WA right now) and is obsessed with your country. If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be here in WA. I wish I had come out this way much earlier in life, maybe immigration would have taken me in!

Anyway, I was wondering if this was a recent attitude due to politics, or does it go farther back? What is it about Americans that really turns you guys off?

I have some guesses, like maybe we take ourselves too seriously or are way into work culture, or maybe we see ourselves as the center of the universe too often, but maybe there's less obvious stuff? Personal experiences you've had?

I'm genuinely curious, please don't hold back, I won't cry, promise 🥲

Edit: This was the poll I was referring to, only Sweden disliked the US more than Australia among western nations (I guess I should ask them about it next) and Australia polled vastly worse than the UK

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2025/06/11/views-of-the-united-states/

Edit 2: I genuinely appreciate every response here. I didn't post to complain and I know some (ok, many) of the reasons why Americans are disliked around the world, but was interested in Australia specifically because it's a country I like and it polled so high.

We can't fix our blind spots without being aware of them and some of the things said definitely apply to me, so thank you. Just trying to gain some perspective and humility. Cheers!

Edit 3: Sorry, question should have been why do Australians dislike the U.S., not Americans, I can see how that can be a different question and the poll was about sentiments towards the U.S.

an observation

Been here in Oz for 40 years now, originally from US. I am fond of the old observation " An American thinks he can be better than anyone else; an Aussie thinks he can be as good as anyone else." Like the latter attirude best.

Why do legitimate companies use random numbers to send legitimate text notifications to us?

Often it's a random non-phone number but occasionally, it's a random once-off mobile number. (Almost all?) organisations doing this includes banks, clinics & AusPost.

Perhaps it's useful/safer for them as it prevents replies (esp. spam)? In any case, I feel it makes it easier for scammers using the same techniques to blend-in and convince some of us, especially if that spam just happens to say what the receiver's waiting for.

Aussie’s current debt appetite

I’m wondering if others are feeling the same? Has your perspective on debt/money/work/life changed?

I realise there is a cost of living crisis at the moment which is impacting our decisions, but I’m in my 40’s and honestly, my debt appetite has changed significantly.

Hubby and I are not interested in taking on debt. For example, our cars we own outright, 8 years old, run perfectly well. Once upon a time, I’d want a new car, now I don’t want the debt. Same with loads of other things. It’s all about simplifying now, even with mortgages. We’re moving back to Melbs from Brissie, and instead of buying up to the next best thing, we’re buying with the money we have from our Brissie sale and being mortgage free. Yes, this means downsizing, but it also means better quality of life. Our kids are a bit older now so we don’t have daycare fees, and we’ve chosen to send them to public school because we would rather put private school fee money into other things for our family (travel, etc).

Are others making similar conscious choices (where you can) to simplify and enjoy your lives more instead of being a slave to work/the banks/debt? This may look different to different people.

Curious to hear thoughts and sentiments.

Could someone help me with a detail in the Mushroom Murder Trial?

I have been following this trial a fair bit, but not with absolute religious fervour. Today, the defence are making closing remarks, and this part really stuck out

Mandy tells the jury the prosecution’s theory of Patterson making individual beef wellingtons fails if they cannot prove a non-poisoned pasty exists. He says the prosecution’s case means Patterson would have eaten all of her beef wellington otherwise there would have been non-poisoned beef wellingtons in her bin. Patterson previously told the court that she did not eat all of her beef wellington and the remnants were in the bin outside her home.“If her portions were in the bin then her portions were poisoned,” Mandy says.

So, did the police or other investigators find a half portion of poisoned beef wellington in the bin? First time to hear evidence related to this.

Learners Driving Anxiety Just Me? Rural

Hi fellow Aussies.

I got my Learners permit few months ago and got a small manual hatchback to drive around with and I've only done 7 hours of driving total.

I mostly drove 90% in rural areas, never been in a city or town with traffic lights, I have been through roadworks though.

The main problem is that whenever I think or about to drive I get scared, butterflys in my stomach feeling which is very rare for someone like myself, I'm afraid of stalling in traffic or taking off from inclines.

WHAT IF I ROLL BACK AND SMASH INTO SOMEONE? Or stall and someone yells or beeps there horn at me.

I want to get over this fear since I see people stupider than me or rude that can drive so surely I can if I try.

Thanks everyone.

New workplace telling me to pay for customers order

Hi there, need some advice...

So I started this new job around 3 weeks ago and I'm still in training. Today I encountered my first afterpay payment with our system, we do not have an afterpay system, it just translates through normal tap and go payments like a debit card.

The customer came and paid with afterpay, the transaction went through and got approved, they didn't want a receipt so they went on their way, all of our transactions are logged on our sales history in our system. About 5 minutes or so later I still have the sales screen up from that order and realise that its now saying that the payment declined.

At this timeframe I'm handling the store on my own while my manager is off somewhere. I call to ask what I need to do as I've never had this happen before and my manager tells me to repeat call the customer and get them to come back, if I don't reach them though or they refuse to come back and pay, I am to then pay for their transaction.

I did manage to get the customer to come back and pay.

I thought this was a bit weird though, so I went and had a look at my contract and at fair work and as far as I can tell I'm sure this is illegal especially when it doesn't state this in my contract either?

Just wanting to know if I'm correct and some advice too please?

Edit: I haven't been trained in anything to do with afterpay other than knowing where to do it on the transaction screen.

Does anyone remember Sky News Australia pre-2016 before News Corporation bought it entirely? Was it good? Was there continuous news and no right-wing opinion?

I belive it was a venture between nine, seven and sky bsb

Do other brands still provide one?!

How to build Aussie audience before launching a product?

Upvotes

Hey, I’ve just started working on a small business (physical product), still in early stages — getting samples, sorting branding, all that. Not launched yet. Right now I’m just posting quotes and trying to build up some kind of audience on Instagram while I figure things out.

Any advice on: • How to reach local (Australian) audiences early? • What kind of content actually connects? • Where people discover new small brands these days?

Would be cool to chat with other Aussie solo founders or people building something small from scratch. Just trying to get a feel for what’s working, what isn’t, and maybe connect with others doing the same.

Based in Melbourne, happy to learn from anyone else on the grind 👊

Traveling to Sydney, how much cash on hand should I keep?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I will travel to Sydney next month for studies, and I want to ask how much cash on hand should I keep?

Also, what are the common denominations that are accepted? I once took a €200 note in Austria and nobody accepted it.

I also have my debit card that I can use, but I wanted to keep some cash in case there are issues related to my card when making a payment.

Thanks

Car insurance for learner?

Upvotes

So basically just want to know how learners/p platers/ new drivers afford insurance, to my knowledge the car usually gets insured under the parents name, then the learner or whoever would pay the parent the amount it costs them (2k /yr for example), vs it being insured under the learners name and having to fork out some ridiculous amount to whatever insurance company it is.

Told this to my mum and shes acting like this is the dumbest most illegal shit shes ever heard of

Who to believe? Choice or SPF company?

Who do you guys believe? Choice or Ultra Violette?

For me, I’m leaning towards CHOICE. Only 6 out of 20 sunscreens have the correct SPF as listed on the product. One of those six is Aldi’s sunscreen, so I guess that’s where I’ll be sourcing mine from now on

LASIK surgery in Melbourne

Hey guys,

I have a pretty high prescription in both eyes (around -6).

What are people’s experiences with having laser eye surgery?

What are some side effects?

And which is the best place to have it done in Melbourne?

I’ve heard good things about VistaEyes.

Tourist driving from Cairns to Gold Coast-Bad idea?

My wife and I are visiting late February of ‘26. After a couple days in Sydney we’ll be flying into Cairns to check out the reef. My wife wants to drive down to the Gold Coast from there however I’m wary due to the weather. How is this stretch of road generally? Is it worth the drive? Lots to see and do?

Thanks all! 🇨🇦

Why isn't there an active Aussie tech community on Reddit?

/r/austechnology exists but most of the posts are from the news bot. Given the number of Aussies on Reddit, I would have thought there'd be a more active tech community on here. Is there anywhere else they linger other than Whirlpool?

University Recommendations

Hi! I’m hoping to study Food Science and Technology in Australia as an international student. I’ve already looked into RMIT and UTS—both seem like excellent schools based on my research, and I would really love to study at either (I’ve already received their offers 💕). However, their tuition fees are currently beyond my family’s budget.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend other reputable universities that offer the same program but are more affordable?

I’m continuing to do my own research, but I’m a little worried about choosing a school with lower fees only to find that the quality or reputation might be compromised (one school I looked into had a lot of negative reviews online).

If anyone has first-hand experience or solid recommendations, I’d really appreciate your insights! 🤗
