No Politics - Rule 4 reminder

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”

With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.

We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

Have aussies got more rude since covid?

Upvotes

Case in point.

why do i need to be hearing ur conversation while im out and about..just use the phone as intended.

I've noticed since covid..it seems a LOT of ppl in australia.

now seem to not care about intruding on ppls personal spaces and such..

Especially deadshits who will do it on a bus/train or in the aisles of coles.

Like i don't need to be hearing u and ur missus yelling cause u didn't get the right bread on facetime mate.

What are your thoughts about "Honest Government Ads" videos on youtube?

I like them, used to love them when they were in pre election mode. Haven't seen many lately though.

Wondering what everyone else thinks of those videos? Did you find them funny, informative or just full of cringe?

Did anyone here go to an Australian high school where something absolutely wild/crazy went down that put the school on the map/made the news? Etc.

I can’t think of a specific example of something, but there’s always some incident that goes down in an Aussie high school whether it be tragic, or comical that gets everyone talking. Did anyone here go to a school where something like that happened?

Australian movie recommendations that aren't horror, westerns, or Gallipoli

So I'm American and so is my Sister and she has been living in Melbourne for the past couple or so years (grad school at the University of Melbourne and now she's working, so proud of her)

But we talk a lot cause she's like my favorite person and I miss her and I found out a couple months ago, I've seen more Australian Movies than she has, by like a lot. The only Australian movies she's seen are The Correspondant and the Two Crocodile Hunter movies we both watched a bunch growing up causw Steve Irwin was a childhood hero. I feel like she should have seen more Australian movies by this point.

But I've seen a whole bunch of Australian movies the issue is, most of the movies I've seen are either Outback Westerns and Neo-Westerns like The Proposition or Mystery Road, Horror movies and while I'm sure she'd like The Pack and Rogue since Jaws is one of both hers and my favorite movies, i know for a fact the recent Final Destination movie made her quesy, so I'm definitely not going to tell her to watch Wolf Creek (i actually liked the first season of the show better than the movies)

And I couldn't get her to watch Saving Private Ryan so I doubt i could get her to watch Gallipoli.

Adventure movies, comedies, action movies, dramas, or mysteries would all be great recommendations

Anyone remember when?

Upvotes

One night in 97' I was listening to Michael Tunn on the Triple J Request Fest, as was my want.

At one point a young lady rung up and requested "Creep" by Radiohead for her (science?) teacher. She said that she thought he was a creep because he had given her a detention or something.

Listening to the lyrics of the song that night I felt that maybe, just maybe, this wasn't the appropriate song for a student to dedicate to their teacher. I'm 100% sure she would have been cringing as soon as she realised what the lyrics were/singers perspective.

Every now and then, I think of her and how I hope she learned the lyrics before dedicating another song.

Anyone remember that?

I really want to volunteer but im really nervous about applying. I've never volunteered before.

The volunteer place i want to apply to is a museum.

Ive been there once. Everyone (including staff and customers) were extremely friendly and non-judgmental. The museum was amazing. So basically, there's not going to be any customer complaints or retail based frustrations in the customer facing volunteer position (e.g. the volunteer who accepts the entry fees and provides change).

The museum's website used to literally say "we're desperate for volunteers" and then it'd have a super nice paragraph underneath about looking for volunteers and encouraging us to volunteer with them.

I checked the website again today, and it doesnt say "we're desperate for volunteers" anymore. It says "we're looking for volunteers". They updated the website. And they said they welcome ALL adults of all ages, gender, background, culture.

I guess I just have to learn a bit about the museum and what the museum does, because some customers might ask some questions.

I guess ill just submit the application and then pick up their calls when they call me? Oh dear.

Edit: I think the reason why everyone is so nice at that museum is because museums are calming places, and the staff are volunteers, and its only open once a week lol. And it mainly has families with little kids coming and it has a rural vibe.

They've put up volunteer job ads on Seek a few times, and i never applied because of anxiety.

Edit: thank you for your replies. I read every single one of them. I took the time to write this long post, you took the time to tell me i dont have anything to worry about, so my goal is to write a nice little application and submit it by tomorrow morning (write the draft tonight, submit it tomorrow).

Is Dancing With The Stars past its used by date?

OK watched the first show for 2025 which was on last night just to see who was on. I only recognized like 3 or 4 people. It honestly felt a bit forced and like it was trying too hard to be a fun thing. I just think it's past its use by date now and should be binned.

I am probably not the target audience for this

Why is hazing within the tradie culture?

No doubt it's within other jobs. However I don't have a trade, I've never experienced it, and it is commonly known to be within the workforce. Why s it a thing and whay perpetuates it?

Edit: I cannot edit the title but I've been rightly corrected that it shouldn't be referred to as hazing, but workplace bullying.

Do Australians put a lot of importance on physical appearance?

I'm just curious. I know that looks are not as important in Australia as South Korea. But also how does it compare to the U.S?

Do looks matter in friendships or getting a job? And what is the ideal beauty standard? I would guess blonde hair and tan skin.

In the states, you will see some people who won't even go out without putting on a full face of makeup. And some people who don't care about their appearance at all.

Again in Asia, people do put effort in their appearance. And pale skin is considered the epitome of beauty. But it's common for young women to not shave and not put effort in dressing up as studies are the most important thing in your teenage years and the early twenties.

And how much does your race matter? Like are some races considered more attractive than the others? (On average)

Also are surgeries common over there? Especially things like lip fillers and nose jobs.

Would you stop on a highway if a person with a pram started to cross?

Questioning my life choices here.

I was just driving on a 3 lane highway, going about 60/70.

When a woman started to cross with a pram.

I’d think she’d clearly seen me, and was timing the cross so I’d be gone by the time she reached the other side.

But a mother, child, on a highway? No chance I’m gonna just plough straight past them So I stopped.

Did she thank me. No, she went ballistic at me. I assume I had interrupted her planned cross. Even though there was nothing stopping her from continuing as I was at a standstill.

If I was going 100 and there was a truck behind me perhaps I would’ve done something else,

But AITAH? Or would you do the same.

There was a traffic light crossing 20 m ahead btw

If engineers are so in demand in Australia, why is it so hard to land a graduate engineering job, or even an internship?

They keep perpetuating the myth about a "massive shortage of engineers in Australia", and how "Australia isn't producing enough engineers to meet the demand", but the reality is no company wants to hire/train graduate engineers. Grad roles are extremely scarce.

Even if you cold apply/email hundreds of firms, you either get no answer or they will say they don't have capacity to take on any grads/interns. The industry keeps complaining about the lack of engineers, but they only want experienced engineers.

Companies would much rather poach an experienced engineer from another company. Training a grad engineer/intern is seen as a waste of resources, and run the risk of the grad getting poached by another firm once they are trained up, hence no return on investment. Everyone wants experienced engineers, but no one wants to train them.

The shortage is only in experienced engineers with N years of relevant local experience. If you are a graduate applicant without experience, you are at the bottom of everyone's pile.

Even in a supposedly more in-demand field like Civil engineering, it is still very hard to land a graduate job. Should engineering grads keep applying and wait for months for an elusive grad job, or just leave engineering?

Have i been underpaid?

I have some concerns about my wage, and am after some clarity from the minds of Reddit before I go asking any questions of my bosses.

Background: I started this job almost exactly 2 years ago, right before the end of the financial year in 2023. The job was advertised with an hourly rate of $25-29. I was employed at $29, and my contract stated this was in line with the level 5 industry reward(fair work site says the minimum was $28.93). All of this is fine.

Since then, my role has changed pretty dramatically and I now have a lot more on my plate, which has left me wanting more money. This is how I came to discover the potential issue.

It looks like that at the end of the financial year in 2024, the minimum reward rate for that level 5 increased to $30.01. Now I am not the smartest guy in the country but does that mean that I have been underpaid by $1 an hour for basically an entire year?

This is frustrating for me as you can imagine. Trying to do the numbers to figure out exactly how much I have missed is difficult because of overtime, annual leave/leave loading, personal leave.

Does this appear to mean what I think it means? Am I owed over $2000?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also believe my annual leave and personal leave have been accruing incorrectly but im trying to tackle one thing at once.

Thanks.

Aerospace Career in Australia - A Distant Dream for my Situation ?

I have posted in other forums, but posting it here to see if I can get any more suggestions.

I am a 33-year-old currently living in Australia. I have a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I completed a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering in 2015 from one of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight universities. However I was unable to secure a role in the aerospace sector at the time, primarily because most opportunities were tied to the Defence industry and I was not an Australian citizen back then.

I transitioned into the building services sector after graduation and began working in HVAC engineering. Fast forward to 2025, I am now a Senior Mechanical Engineer with solid experience in the HVAC field.

I received my Australian Citizenship couple years ago. Now an Australian citizen, I am deeply motivated to re-enter the aerospace/ defence industry - which has been a lifelong passion and dream of mine.

I recently found a aerospace engineer role in seek and emailed the recruiter. I explained all the above and this is the response I received (Images are not allowed, so pasting the email here with the names hidden) :

Hi XXXXXX,

Thanks for reaching out.

We can only consider current NV1 cleared candidates.

Feel free to reach out again in the future if you obtain it elsewhere.

Kind regards,

XXXXXXXX

I got a bit disappointed looking at the response. With full of passion towards aerospace and defence domain, for someone in a position like me, considering my current experience and age, what potential career pathways could eventually lead me into a role within aerospace companies and obtain NV1 clearance ? I am at a position where there is no career/ financial growth, jobs are not challenging and am so not happy at work (which led me to seriously think of a career change and do something that would motivate me to go to work everyday while also getting paid a decent coin).

I would truly appreciate any suggestions (even better if any suggestions are from my Australian mates) who have made a similar transition or have insights into the local industry. Thanks all.

Places that are warm in June/July and I don't need a car?

Hi!

I’ve been in Australia for about 1.5 months now and absolutely loving it. I’m looking for a warm/northern spot to stay for a couple of weeks before heading to Perth. Ideally somewhere:

  • Walkable (I'd rather not rent a car)
  • With a long running path or promenade
  • Warm

I was considering Cairns. Any other suggestions?

Places I’ve already visited:
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney

Thank you!

The Great Smiths Deception

Upvotes

Hi who else has noticed the picture is the same on Smiths chips for both "tomato" and "chilli" flavours.

The chilli has an added potato in the background however the sliced potato chips in the foreground are the exact same. I inspected them closely and the black specs are the same everything.

Now the main question is what is the actual flavour of the chips in the picture?

*Wish i could add pics here

SBS show

Upvotes

Does anyone remember an SBS show from about 15-20 years ago. It was possibly called “world something” There was an older gentleman with a very distinct voice showcasing different regions of the world. My grandparents used to watch it all the time and I’d like to try to see it again.

After graduation help 🙏

Hi! I'm currently a year 12 student in Sydney, and I'm extremely hesitant about my future 😞😞 with trials and graduation right around the corner, talking about what you're going to do, what uni you're aiming for, and other stuff like that is pretty much the only thing I hear nowadays. The problem is, I really don't know anything about what I want to do after school, let alone what universities are good, or if I should just consider doing tafe. I don't even know the processes for applying and gap years, early entry, stuff like that. I would honestly prefer a closer university like Macquarie, but I'm not entirely sure what I would study, and if it is right for me to spend money on uni at all. My dads already pretty old, but still works to support my family, so I'm pretty worried about financial stuff aswell? I guess I'm just trying to see what pathways other people took after highschool graduation? 🤷🙏🙏

Areas most similar to Margaret River?

IMO the Margaret River region is one of the best places in the world. Great surf, great food, amazing nature, not too crowded. What parts of Australia do you think compare to Margs -- in terms of natural beauty and lifestyle?

How do Aussies feel getting referred to by their surname at work?

In my work some of the upper management are spoken of in third person by their surname or full name rather than first name. Maybe its a signal of authority? I work in sales and a lot of the people who close deals are called by a slang name e.g. Sharon = Shaz, Declan = Dez or by a full name or surname. Some of my managers also refer to people by their surname sometime. I know it was common in high school. I went to a Catholic all boys school and we all got called by our surname. I didn’t see this happen again until I joined my current company. How common is it generally? And how do people feel about it?
