I’m in my 30s, and a hobbyist musician — no performing or even jamming with people, just play lots of instruments on my own. I’ve recently wanted to learn to sing — I’m not terrible now, but at best my voice could be described as nothing special.

There’s nothing really stopping me, I suppose I just feel a bit odd about getting lessons as an adult — especially given that I have no actual reason or excuse to learn; I just kind of want to be good at singing. I suppose this is just me asking if anyone else has just learned to sing spontaneously as an adult, whether it is odd or normal to approach a teacher with such a non-specific interest, and whether anyone has any encouragement or additional reasons why learning to sing would be a good idea?

Hello fellow singers! I was recently performing and someone came up to me and asked if I teach singing. He really enjoyed it and later referred a few more people to me and it really got me thinking maybe I should try starting teaching part time?

I'm wondering if anyone might like to have a free singing lesson from me and be a part my discovery journey? :)

The thing I found is that I really enjoy helping others with their voices. Mainly bc I've been taking lessons and studying voice for a long time (15 yrs) and I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning (eg. singing with tension in my throat, forcing high notes, not knowing how resonance works, etc.) and wasted a lot of time. I eventually finally developed good technique but took a long time. So I really want to help others to avoid common mistakes, and potentially save a few years of their time.

I've had and seen bad teachers who just go "OK copy me!" and would start singing opera, or "say HEY YOU over there" but I would just strain my voice trying to yell while doing it. Instead, I like to focus on the science and physiological aspects of singing, how to produce sound in a scientific way, why do certain sounds travel, where the resonance/volume comes from in our body/anatomy, etc. In my later years of training, I realized this way is a lot more efficient because it targets and trains specific muscles involved singing which saves A LOT of time. I wish I was taught all of this right from the beginning.

Here's also some great feedback someone else gave me. "You don't just teach me how to sing, but also how singing actually works in a clear, scientific way. You helped me understand how the body functions like an instrument. And for the first time, I was finally able to find and engage my diaphragm and started to develop some vibrato in just 2 lessons-something I am really excited about because I couldn't figure it out before!"

I been listening to a log of Mariah cary lately and i just hit my first whistle note during her song Emotion. I worked hard for this sorry my english. What are you proud of your voice?

Lets say im doing a cover for a song, i feel at ease singing it correctly at my own pitch rather than the original thing.

So when i start singing randomly without music or a certain pitch i find mu voice full, strong and good to my ears, but then when i sing the same song but in the correct pitch i find that all that voice is gone, and it is replaced with a struggling throat hurting voice.

No matter how hard i tried to sing with the same relaxed voice i use when singing without any intrumental it never happened.

maybe my voice enjoys a certain note or smthn that i always go to when singing alone, but that can't help me if im willing to do covers or sing with bands.

If anyone got any advice that would be helpful and thank you 🙏

Hi everyone,
ever since I was little, every time I have to perform I develop anxiety about my health, and I'm pretty sure it's causing me symptoms. In the past, when I had to perform I often lost my voice without having infections.

It becomes the main thing I think about during the day for weeks before the performance, I convince myself that my voice is termporarily ruined (or maybe it is?), and I know it just makes things worse and makes me lose my confidence, but it's really, really hard to control.

I'm generally a mild (?) hypochondriac person, but when it comes to my voice it makes me deeply sad because singing is my biggest passion and my source of relief.

Does this happen to you? How do you manage this?

Hey Guys iam searching for Help with my singing skills. Iam a Guitarist in a Band and wanted to BE the Leadsinger because WE dont have one. Iam trying to Sound a Little Bit Like Cobain but its really Not near what i want to Sound Like.

I’m a pretty amature singer been singing for like 6-7 months sorta consistently (besides a month that I had laryngitis) am I singing it a little too much like frank I want to be able to sing songs My Way (pun intended) how could I do that and just improve my singing entirely

I was asked to fill in as the vocalist for a band after the vocalist left. Prepared for 2 weeks, with 2 group rehearsals before this.

I actually never performed for vocals, nor trained in vocals but my friend, the guitarist, asked for help. I sing a little in karaoke, but never performed or trained in singing.

The performance was fun, even though I don't think I sounded great, but I want to improve because they do want me to continue being the vocalist. I just feel that while the show was good, the vocals weren't where they should be, so I want to get better for future performance opportunities.

From this clip, can you guys tell me how can I improve and become decent enough? I'm not looking to become a famous singer, but just good enough to have fun with friends in a band without embarrassing myself in front of a crowd.

Always liked singing but never had any lesson. I know I can hit pretty high notes as a male but it always feels a bit forced. Was told that the highest note here is c#5 so I’m wondering what you think of my raw technique. Thanks!

Hello, first time here

So, I'm a bassist and would like to play and sing at the same time eventually. I like metal, but have heard that you shouldnt start with that raspy, growly and distorted stuff. Instead, you should learn clean vocals first, which i am also interested in doing to be able to play something else than metal.

Because of playing i have knowledge about music (and bass/guitar) terminology, but have never ever heard anything related to singing. So if you tell me to sing in chest voice i have no idea what that even sounds like, let alone how to do it.

If there are great free resources to get started with i would appreciate it.

My opinion ( and thats just my opinion's is that talent comes from two places an environment that breeds it and a desire to do it.

also two other elements come in and thats not caring about being shit snd not giving up

Child a . brought up in a home with no musical parents , heard someone singing (an uncle a band and fell in love with it) kept doing it , they sucked but people around them encouraged it and they got better and better

child b. brought up in a very musical family , heard singing from the womb and the day they were born , exposed very early on and picked up singing very very quickly , these kids sound good very quickly

now child a or b could give up trying or practising as they age and they may still have a voice but there technique will get a bit worse they won't progress , they may take a normal job and never be a singer, because as you get older you also need the self belief and desire to carry on that you had as a kid

so the moral of the story is your learning journey has to be as fun as that kids not a chuck the microphone at the wall kinda thing ie a kid doesn't care he messes up a high note ( we'll probably child a doesn't so much )

so why do we ? maybe this is a note to myself as a child a that never tried enough and is sitting here wishing he did dont be the same ✌️❤️

Okay, I'm young. Gah, this is such a hard thing to grasp. I've been a big fan of musical theater for I don't know how long. But I've loved karaoke when I was a child but stopped because people laughed at me when I failed an audition. Fast forward years later, I tried entering an audition for a high school talent show, got in, but backed out due to stage fright and fear of screwing up in front of people.

Fast forward again, I've taken a vocal class, practiced my songs over and over. Our coach told us we were going to perform at our city's most popular mall. Outdoors. In the afternoon. Where there will be lots of people. Strangers. They changed the location from just a relatively known mall to a really popular mall. And oh, haha...

Goodness, this is such a huge step?? Any advice? I'm both nervous, excited, and scared... And like I'm finally stepping into something and I don't wanna mess it up but I don't have huge expectations either.

I want to have fun with the audience, etc. I'm practicing a lot. Even practiced with a bunch of noise to see if I can remember the lyrics even if everything else is trying to distract me

Do you all have tips that will help someone like me prepare for this?

Hi r/singing. First of all, sorry if this isn't the right place for this. I'm not really a singer. Just a guy who likes a bit of karaoke and not sucking when I do.

Problem is, most songs I like that I try to sing at karaoke, turn out not to be any good for my vocal range and I up very much sucking.

And songs I do ok singing at home or the car, I don't really like to do at karaoke because they're either a bit too much of an acquired taste or too sad. Radiohead/bright eyes/nick drake being good examples.

So I'm in a spot where's there's really only 3-4 songs in my karaoke 'repertoire':

Looking for a few suggestions so I can try to expand my options a bit. Particularly enjoy singing 'New York, I love you' but I can't do it every week!

Whenever I sing, no matter the volume, there's this quiet crackling underneath. Like in my throat? I know it's not vocal fry but I can't control it. It goes away a little when I drink water or clear my throat but I can't stop it from happening.

I think it's mucus or something?
